Foreword foreword
Since before the first edition of Jazz in the Park, my main concern wasn’t how we were going to start this festival, but how we are going to keep it. How will we become better the following edition? Will the team stick together for another year? Will we have the resources required to do this all over again? These were the questions that kept bothering me for weeks after the first edition of the festival. But every time we start planning the new edition, all of my fears fade away. The team is always there, ideas always keep flowing, partners keep joining in and, at the beginning of every summer, we are always ready to surprise the crowd with provocative concerts and a welcoming atmosphere. Year after year, Jazz in the Park becomes more and more personal. It grew on me and it grew on all of us. It has become a refuge where you feel comfortable, safe, valuable. We give our best for this project and in return, it gives back so much satisfaction. During these years, we’ve had a lot of difficulties, but none of them stopped us. Not the money, not the rain, not cancelled flights or any other problems of this sort. So basically, we’ve stopped thinking about whether or not we will manage to do it again, year after year. Jazz in the Park became a certainty. And this is a promise. 2019 was a great year for us. We’ve perfected many aspects of the festival related to the lineup, our communication strategy, decor and participants. Even the sun liked the festival so much that it kept coming back every day. So expect a lot from us for the 8th edition. We’re bringing in two new stages, artists that will blow your mind, a new strategy for the Jazz in the Park Fund and so many new activities! On behalf of my great team, I invite you to read the following material and convince yourself that, at least for a few days, Jazz in the Park is probably the best place to be!

CENTRAL PARK
Central Park has been our home since the very beginning. In 2013, Jazz in the Park was the first festival to take place there, thus becoming the first event ever that allowed people to sit on the grass and hang hammocks through the park. And it has remained so ever since.

Access: easy, friendly, free Capacity: 30.000 people / day Position: near the city centre, main tourist attraction Diverse content: yes Alternatives for rainy weather: yes
VORBE Called a “place for friends” Vorbe is the official bar of Jazz in the Park. During the festival, this is where we organize midnight jam sessions and people can meet their favorite artists, grab a beer and enjoy the cozy, jazzy atmosphere that dominates the place. We call it a “place for friends” for a reason, right?
Features: Capacity: 200 people indoor / 1000 people outdoor Position: situated in Museum Square Food: yes Drinks: yes
IULIUS PARC In 2019, Iulius Parc has become the main location of the International Jazz in the Park Competition. It is spacious and it gives us the possibility to create rich content during the event, from a food court area, to several lounges and a big performing area.

Music
MAIN STAGE Location: main alley, with entrance from the stadium Capacity: 8.500 people Days active: 4 Stage size: 80 sqm Short description: The Main Stage is also the first stage ever at Jazz in the Park. It hosts the biggest concerts of the festival and it’s designed to please all kinds of audiences, not only jazz enthusiasts. It’s the stage where anybody can find something they like, with mostly famous projects, very easy to listen to.
ALTERNATIVE STAGE Location: on the grass, near the Hungarian Opera Capacity: 3.500 people Days active: 3 Stage size: 50 sqm Short description: It’s the second biggest stage in the festival and it’s called the Alternative Stage because it has a different music approach compared to the Main Stage. Here you can listen to niche projects and see multidisciplinary artists that usually combine jazz with other styles of music or other arts.
W E N
ELECTRONIC STAGE Location: hammock area, near the Painting Hall Capacity: 2.500 people Days active: 3 Stage size: 50 sqm Short description: Cluj-Napoca earned its reputation as a city that loves electronic music due to the fact that it hosts two of the biggest electronic music festivals in the country. As a tribute, we’ve created a stage that promotes jazz artists that use electronica, ranging from funky DJs to big jazz bands that took a more modern approach to their music.
W NE
KIDS STAGE Location: near the lake Capacity: 500 Days active: 2 Short description: Kids today are tomorrow’s top fans! Every year we have a special program for kids ranging from 1YO to teens, where we present jazz in a more accessible way, but also let them play a large variety of instruments. Added to this, in 2020 we plan to present a showcase with the most talented kids in the city.
W E N
PIANO STAGE Location: behind the Casino building Capacity: 2.500 people Days active: 3 Size: 60 sqm Short description: Starting with 2020, we will inaugurate a new stage centered around the piano. From solos to big bands, you will hear them all here. The vibe will be very intimate, with people sitting on the grass, on blankets, drinking wine and listening to sweet piano music!
W
NE
STREET STAGE Location: middle of the Park’s main alley Capacity: 200 Days active: 4 Short description: Due to the success of Jazz in the Park’s baby brother, Art in the Street, we will inaugurate a street performance stage in the festival, with crazy acts, from jugglers to musicians playing on improvised instruments! It will be the most instagrammable stage of them all!
JAM SESSIONS Location: Vorbe Capacity: 200 Days active: 4 Short Description: These parties seem to get bigger every year. More and more people say that the jams are the best part of the festival. For those who don’t know what a jam is, here’s how we can put it: at the end of the night, when they finished their job, our musicians get together for a drink and chat. And if you put instruments next to them, they will begin to play together. At these parties, you get to listen to stuff that you will never hear again. Best feeling ever!
JAZZ BY NIGHT Location: yet unknown Capacity: yet unknown Days active: 2 Short description: Jazz in the Park is a day festival. The program ends at midnight. But when we turn off the music, there are so many people that would like to stay a bit more, for another concert and another beer. Oh, well, we have a big surprise for these guys this year!
Activities
MUSIC
INSTRUMENTS TRYOUT If you’re into music and you want to test some of the nicest pianos, guitars, drums and other HIFI music equipment, you have to pay us a visit at the Casino! Everything you need is right there, waiting for you. And if you happen to arrive in the middle of an exciting jam session, well, that’s what this area does to people. So don’t be shy and join in!
VINYL FAIR If you’re more of a listener rather than a performer, don’t worry, there’s interesting stuff for you as well. We have a huge collection of vinyls that you can choose from, from the legendary ones to the fascinating underground “weirdos”. This corner is full of musical surprises, trust us!
DRUM CAMP The drum camp is the perfect opportunity to let your inner musician shine. Even if you’re a beginner or a true drum master, just join the open air classes in the park and create your own jazzy rhythm together with your friends.
ESTELIO AUDITION ROOM
SILENT CONCERTS
When you listen to music on HIFI equipment, it can change the way you relate to music completely. You suddenly feel all the nuances, the notes you’ve never heard before, the subtleties, the whispers, and listening to music becomes a truly immersive experience. In the Estelio Audition Room, you’ll get the goosebumps more than once, for sure!
When all the stages fall to sleep, where do we move the party? At the silent concerts, of course! Listening to music via headphones will turn into a unique way of enjoying live concerts after midnight. So get ready for those dance moves, ‘cause we’ve got your back!
ART
ART COMPETITION Central Park might just as well be considered a masterpiece in itself and our art competition will emphasize just that. National and international artists will turn the park into a canvas where their imagination runs wild, so get ready for some interactive installations that will make you enjoy this wonderful place even more!
THEATRE We look forward to creating a place where fantastic worlds will be brought to life through theatre performances. Having a rich content addressed to children, teens and adults, this stage will be ruled by magic.
PHOTO EXHIBITIONS
PAINTING GALLERY
We like to turn Central Park into an open-air museum, so the photo exhibitions couldn’t be left aside. You’ll get to discover new photographers, see some frames that might stick with you for a long time, or find out more about the festival’s history through some of the most representative pictures taken since the beginning.
If you’ve ever passed by the mysterious building situated towards the center of the park wondering what’s inside, here’s some good news: at Jazz in the Park, the doors will open and an entire painting gallery will be waiting for you. Just wait and see!
FUN & SOCIAL
THE ZIPLINE We just want you to explore “the sky is the limit” quote. For that, the zipline is waiting for you by the lake. Say “Yes!” to the challenge and see Jazz in the Park from above.
GAMING AREA The place where you can set your inner child free. How much fun can you have when you combine huge scramble, pallet chess, bowling alleys, ping pong, jenga, foosball and friends, all in the same place? If you don’t have the answer yet, wait for Jazz in the Park.
FOOD GARDEN Vegetarians, vegans, sweets fans, burger, pizza & pasta lovers, all the foodie lovers in the park, unite! Because we know just the place to be. A huge food variety combined with fancy tables and the best soundtrack just across the alley.
DOG DAYCARE
BOOK CORNER
This area is going to be just like an outdoor daycare for dogs. If you want to sing along at the main stage but you also want the man’s best friend to enjoy its time at Jazz in the Park, this is the place you are looking for. Besides the cuteness overload, you’ll find professional staff taking care of your dog.
To all the book lovers out there, we’ve got you covered as well! We’ll build a corner where you can either read, buy or donate books to someone who might not be as privileged. Here, the experience goes beyond simply enjoying a book; it transforms into an exchange that can bring you many wonderful surprises.

ABOUT THE FUND It’s our way to get more involved in the community. It’s our way to transform Jazz in the Park from a festival into a community celebration. The idea came in 2015, when we’ve realised that so many visitors enjoy the festival with no strings attached. So, basically, the Jazz in the Park Fund became an opportunity for them to give something back, to show their appreciation. And you know what’s even more amazing? That money was never raised for us. Together with our audience, we always used it to do good in the community.
MECHANISM We try to keep it simple. We invented the non-mandatory ticket: a symbolic ticket that costs 20 lei/5 EUR and in return you get an official bracelet, like it usually happens at festivals. We sell them online, offline and also during the festival, with the help of volunteers.

BEST PROJECTS The cultural voucher, initiated by Cluj Cultural Centre and dedicated to people with special needs or at risk of social exclusion (Roma, young people from rural areas) whose cultural participation we want to improve. The voucher provides them free access to different cultural events, from theatre performances to concerts and movies. Sport scholarship for Roma children - we financed a one-year long project in which a facilitator took each month 12 kids, three times a week, to practice the art of Judo at a professional gym, thus teaching them discipline and keeping them off the streets. In this scholarship we paid for the gym fee, transportation, gym equipment and a meal in those days. MĂSCĂRICI - 27 graphic illustrators combined their talents to create a special set of playing cards, a contemporary reinterpretation of the Eastern card game that we all played when we were young. The project was not just a way to bring different artists together, but also a way to create a powerful connection between cultures.

CLASSIC UNLIMITED MUSIC TOUR Spring Season (Apr-May 2020) | Autumn Season (Oct-Nov 2020) Through Classic Unlimited, we want to bring people closer to the beauty of classical music. By organizing piano concerts in unexpected unconventional places (such as libraries, working hubs, art galleries or even a mine), we challenge the audience to think outside the box, to start seeing music from a new, more friendly perspective. The idea was first implemented in Germany, under the name of Klassik Mittendrin, by the pianist Bogdan Vaida who, later on, in 2017, brought it in Romania as Classic Unlimited. Together, we had three successful editions and we’re enthusiastically heading towards the fourth.
IAȘI INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL September 2020 Jazz in the Park will leave its mark on the cultural life of Iași - one of the biggest and most beautiful Romanian cities. Although different in concept, Iași International Jazz Festival will promote the same values that we’re focusing on at Jazz in the Park: quality music, quality time spent with friends and a community-friendly attitude. This festival will connect different places in town through music (both indoor and open-air), and it will create a ‘jazzy labyrinth’ meant to bring people together for a fresh, well spent weekend.
ART IN THE STREET October 2020 When we realised there’s not a proper legislation that can support street artists in Romania, we’ve created Art in the Street (initially named Jazz in the Street). Our main focus was to initiate this platform where artists of all kinds can go out, occupy the city streets and interact with their audiences in a more unconventional, yet truthful way. It was also our way to give new meanings to public spaces that were never used at their full artistic potential. The project has reached its fourth edition in 2019, and we plan to keep up creating such initiatives for street performers. After all, a community that learns to support its artistic and cultural growth is a healthy community. And we’re totally aiming for that.

The team
IN ORDER TO MAKE THINGS WORK PROPERLY, OUR TEAM HAS A DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE.
THE MANAGING DEPARTMENT has the bigger image of our project, works as a link between all the other departments, and makes sure things follow the established timeline.
THE FINANCIAL DEPARTMENT is in charge of money-related aspects, but also of providing and managing all the official documents, making sure they follow the financial plan and are elaborated in tune with the current legislation.
THE SALES DEPARTMENT contacts entities that would be interested to join us in making the best Jazz in the Park edition. This team will always find a win-win financial solution for everyone involved in the festival.
THE BOOKING and the GUEST DEPARTMENTS work hand in hand. The former keeps in touch with artists and agencies, thus negotiating every aspect regarding their participation at the festival. The latter makes sure the requests of the artists are being taken care of during the event.
THE PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT manages the technical and logistical part of the festival. This team manages everything that has to do with sound, lighting, staging, backline, equipment, power, and all related labor, before, during and after the event.
THE COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT makes sure our message gets heard. The team is in charge of elaborating a complex communication strategy meant to promote our festival on and offline, thus reaching all audiences that might be interested in enjoying the Jazz in the Park experience.

DOS AND DON’TS If you are a brand that wants to interact with our public, here is some key advice: •
The festival takes place in a park. Try to take care of the trees and the grass.
•
Do something around music. Our audience expects that. We promote music not just through concerts, but with activities, showcases and even a music fair
•
Focus on giving an experience. Jazz in the Park is about a good time.
•
Be decent. There are kids around
•
We promote decent values. We are not a trend setter, nor an influencer. We promote the idea of being a good decent person. You should do the same.
