Carmen de Souza & Theo Pascal

Theo Jackson Trio

Born in Cape Verde and based in London, Carmen Souza has carefully developed her partnership with bassist and producer Theo Pascal over the last 12 years. Together they have developed a sound that takes its inspiration from a brilliant range of jazz and world music influences, with de Souza’s amazing vocal talent perfectly matched by Pascal’s subtle and melodic bass work.

Vocalist and pianist Theo Jackson is an engaging and charismatic performer who has already gained a reputation in the UK and further afield. Described as “one of the most interesting jazz vocalists and composers to emerge on the British scene in recent years” (Daily Telegraph), his stylish and contemporary approach marks him out as a true star, and a great prospect for the future of the UK scene.

For their JazzAhead showcase performance they are joined by two other excellent British artists, saxophonist Nathaniel Facey and drummer Shaney Forbes, who are themselves members of top UK jazz quartet Empirical. An unmissable experience for JazzAhead 2015!

Joining him at JazzAhead are Huntly Gordon (double bass) and Marco Quarantotto (drums), and their evening Clubnight performance on the sailing ship De Liefde is guaranteed to impress and entertain in equal measure.

Neil Hughes I represent the Ben Cox Band, a UK based vocal jazz group writing original material and who have just had their album launch at Pizza Express Soho. The mesmerising tone and delivery of Ben Cox’s vocals, combined with the song-writing skills of both Ben and Jamie Safiruddin have marked this quintet as one to follow. Twice on Jamie Cullum’s show, and having completed a Maida Vale session with the BBC, the band is already experienced at a very young age. Steeped in jazz history, yet able to write beautiful songs themselves, I am looking for European agents to represent the band. “Fresh new vocal jazz music, Ben has got a very precise voice, it recalls a little bit of Kurt Elling to me, I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.” - Jamie Cullum “Ben Cox possesses a voice drenched in soul and swing that sounds like nobody else. He is a cracking songwriter and collaborator, a true talent.” - Ian Shaw “Ben Cox owns a stunning capacity to live through each song with a rich tone and beautifully honest heart. Jamie Safiruddin plays with such an exciting and generous style…I think we may have found the best new jazz talent to emerge from the UK. Highly recommended.” Liane Carroll

Carmen Souza and Theo Pascal come together again after 6 acclaimed albums to release a new CD called Epistola - “A special letter with sounds addressed to anyone open to receive them” – at JazzAhead’s showcase on 25th April. Recorded between sessions in London, Lisbon and New York, Epistola features top UK jazz drummer Shane Forbes (of Empirical fame), New York musicians Matt King (piano) & Craig Yaremko (sax and clarinet) and a special talented young drummer called Zoe Pascal. For the last 12 years Carmen Souza and Theo Pascal have developed their own solid and successful sound under the name ‘Carmen Souza’ led by Souza’s amazing vocal talent, and inquisitive and meaningful lyrics arranged over Pascal’s singular compositions. A delicious recipe of African/Cape Verde roots wrapped around Jazz named by DOWNBEAT as a “recipe for artistic success” and critically acclaimed by jazz, world music press and audiences all over the world. For this new album Carmen wanted a co-billing with Theo Pascal, who was the first to discover and believe in her talent and has always been behind her as mentor, composer and producer. www.carmensouza.com / www.theopascal. com / www.jazzpilon.com Contact: Patricia Pascal E: patricia.pascal@carmensouza.com T: +44 (0)7799 500 179

In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, in its new home in buzzing Soho, Ronnie Scott’s is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting full to bursting audiences practically every night. Since the early days of Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie and Miles Davis, the club continues to present the biggest names in jazz including Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling, all of whom shun the concert halls in favour of the intimate and welcoming environs of the club. Ronnie Scott’s is also a club firmly on the cutting edge; the first place to catch hotly-tipped rising stars, visionary artists and the next big thing.

Ian Shaw has been described as one of the most distinctive, original and creative jazz singers that the UK has produced, as well as being a talented pianist and song writer. Twice voted Best Jazz Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards, he has more than a dozen albums to his name. While his solo shows become ever more popular, he is much in demand as the featured soloist with big bands and orchestras both in the UK and internationally, alongside pairings with the likes of Guy Barker, Liane Carroll and Claire Martin and over the years has also worked with Quincy Jones, Abdullah Ibrahim, Cleo Laine, Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor. His USA success was based on three highly acclaimed American releases, one with the legendary Cedar Walton, and Downbeat said of his 2008 recording, Lifejacket (Linn Records) “surely a contender for album of the year”. His most recent release, an anthology of songs with lyrics by the American poet Fran Landesman, A Ghost In Every Bar led Jazz Times to write, “The Welsh vocalist remains the gentlest of troubadours and most nakedly magical of storytellers”. “An incredible vocalist ... he has few rivals” - The Times www.ianshaw.biz E: charlottekeech@yahoo.co.uk T: +44 (0)7957 975 635

Whirlwind Recordings was established in 2010 by recording artist, freelance bassist, composer, bandleader and producer Michael Janisch, a US native who relocated to London in 2005 and created the label specifically for the worldwide release of Purpose Built, his debut solo album. Since then the label has grown considerably releasing an eclectic catalogue of adventurous and visceral music that spans genres, is rooted in originality and has key emphasis on the improvised. The artists on the label range from established masters to guiding lights of their generation to undiscovered stars in the making. “Whirlwind Recordings is the new label of the moment, releasing a diverse cross section of excellent music.” - BBC Radio 2 “Whirlwind are quickly making a name for themselves in uncovering some of the hippest new talent.” - UK Vibe “American bassist Michael Janisch’s Whirlwind label is fast becoming a major player.” - The Guardian “Whirlwind has established itself, in a remarkably short time, as a natural home for music of power and quality.” - London Jazz News www.whirlwindrecordings.com Contact: Michael Janisch E: info@whirlwindrecordings.com
