Sheltering Arms utilizes non-traditional solutions to meet the city’s need for comprehensive and effective youth rehabilitation for youth in the juvenile justice system (formerly names Episcopal Social Services). Art Start has partnered with Sheltering Arms for 3 years, and currently works with their after-school program in a Bronx high school that serves non-secure placement and non-secure detention youth.

Emerging Artists Program (EAP) 2016 Year to Date ❏ 12 participants committing to 6 months ❏ 32 weekly group meetings ❏ In 71% of workshops, students were “extremely engaged” About the Program: The Emerging Artists Program supports NYC emerging artists between the ages of 13 - 21, who have exhibited exceptional artistic talent, but lack the resources and support to turn that talent into opportunities for their future. The program provides emerging artists with a rigorous schedule of coursework, project creation, networking, showcase opportunities, two-year planning, a cash stipend, a transportation stipend and career-counseling in the creative professional industries. Emerging Artists go on to become art students, performers and, above all, responsible young adults with a clear vision and a plan for their personal success.

Student Spotlight
Meet Melvin, age 9
Meet Maranda, Age 13
Meet Malik Age 16
Melvin has attended 11 Art Start workshops at Bushwick Family Shelter. Art Start Teaching Artist, Danny, noticed Melvin’s propensity for drawing and used this as an opportunity to help him strengthen and recognize his ability to be resilient. Through drawing, Melvin has learned how to fail and through Danny’s encouragement, he learned that he would improve if he kept trying. Since Melvin has started Art Start, he’s become more comfortable asking for help and is less hesitant to try new projects.
Maranda began attending Art Start at CASES in Harlem after her social worker suggested it. She was skeptical at first but soon began to utilize poetry and visual arts to express herself. Creativity became a way for Maranda to process her experiences. Art Start Teaching Artist, Amir, described Maranda as a "warrior poet waiting to blossom" and observed Maranda’s growth in confidence and ability since she started Art Start .
Malik is a 16-year old M.C. from Brooklyn. Malik came to Art Start by recommendation of program partner YO SOS (Youth Organizing Save Our Streets). Malik is passionate about social justice and often writes music that express his feelings about gun violence and police brutality. In the Emerging Artist Program, Malik records each week at the Art Start Studios. He workshops his writing with his mentor and will soon begin making his own beats.
