The Cowperwood Company Report & Renewal Request January 1 - September 1, 2017 YTD

Highlights 2017 Year-to-Date (January to June)

September 7, 2017

Programs Dear John,

• 746 youth—an increase of 20% over the same period last year

We at Art Start are incredibly fortunate to witness every day the many ways in which art creates hope and healing in the lives of so many of our youngest and most vulnerable New Yorkers. Paint-covered hands are not just a joy to behold, but happiness itself reflected in the eyes of a homeless child. Young people just beginning to discover the uniqueness of their own voices are filling the often confusing world that surrounds them with the beautiful sights and sounds of their rich imaginations and highest aspirations.

• 1,220 attendances (participation) • 351 workshops • 8 New York City locations • 10 paid program staff supported by 2 Master of Social Work interns and 39 volunteer creative professionals Finances YTD Income: $220,971

We are grateful to you and the Cowperwood Company for your generous support this past year, and year after year. We have been honored to do this work thousands of young New York City living on the margins, and providing them with opportunities to see themselves as full members of the New York City arts community. It is only with your help that we can make this all happen. We hope you will continue to partner with us again this year. We thank you for believing, as we do, that art saves lives.

The Issue: NYC Homelessness in 2017 Has increased by approximately 2,000 people since August 2016.

Petitions for juvenile detention were filed in Family Court last year for 1,824 of young people under the age of 18. About 11% of these were children 12 years of age and younger. That is about 45 school buses carrying 40 students each.

The Issue: NYC Youth Incarceration in 2016

Art Start’s Response Art Start nurtures the voices, hearts and minds of New York City's underserved youth through consistent creative workshops inside homeless shelters, alternative to incarceration programs, and partnering youth agencies.

HYOP Partner Spotlight: Nelson Family Residence About the Partner Site: Nelson Family Residence in the Bronx operates year round and is part of the community-based organization Bronxworks. Through a Department of Youth and Community Development School’s Out NYC contract, Art Start provides after-school programming 5 days per week. This summer, Art Start initiated a Music as Therapy program at Nelson Family Residence. With the support of the Caruso Foundation and the consultation of the Certified Neurological Music Therapists of Healing Harmonies, LLC, Art Start staff were trained in music therapy interventions designed to address the mental and emotional challenges youth often experience when homeless. We invested in specialized music therapy instruments to execute these interventions and developed a toolkit for unique situations with youth in workshops.

Youth Offender Outreach: Spotlight Comments from Art Start Teaching Artist Reports

Christian “Christian has always been very focused during the workshop. I was glad to see that he continued this today even encouraging his peers to not misbehave but stay on track. He has worked on his canvas for 3 weeks and stayed with it, taking pride in his work but open to suggestions. I am well pleased.” “Christian was a joy to have in the class today. He happily went to work right away with the different color string and beads. He created a pattern with different colors/shapes/sizes of beads that was really unique and he seemed to really enjoy being there which was nice to see.” “Christian O. was the only youth today and again he's very easy to work with, stays focused and doesn't use profanity at all, at least amongst us, which is novel.’

“Seeing Christian interact with Alex, he appears to be a leader, giving directions and sharing ideas about how Alex could design his canvas.”

Emerging Artists Program (EAP) 2017 Year-to-Date ❏ 9 participants committing to 6 months ❏ 29 weekly group meetings ❏ In 71% of workshops, students were “extremely engaged” About the Program: The Emerging Artists Program supports NYC emerging artists between the ages of 13 - 21, who have exhibited exceptional artistic talent, but lack the resources and support to turn that talent into opportunities for their future. The program provides emerging artists with a rigorous schedule of coursework, project creation, networking, showcase opportunities, two-year planning, a cash stipend, a transportation stipend and career-counseling in the creative professional industries. Emerging Artists go on to become art students, performers and, above all, responsible young adults with a clear vision and a plan for their personal success.

EAP Spotlight: Tayahna At age 14, Tayahna is one of the youngest and most dedicated members of Art Start’s Emerging Artist Program. Tayahna is a talented poet, singer, and songwriter who relishes the possibility of someday producing for some of the world’s greatest music stars, but it is not because she wishes to shy away from the stage herself. “I am most proud of my performances,” she says. “Every time I go up, it’s a new Tayahna, a fresh new Tayahna, because the audience is new every time.” Tayahna was also one of participants in the 2017 Portrait Project. Her involvement in that effort has given her a tangible way to experience one of her many possible futures. “You can actually do it when you have the chance to create your own opportunities. This project has made it seem like it’s more than just words or a dream. It’s real.” She looks at the vision of herself in her Portrait Project photo with a certain sense of awe. “This puts me in the future. It’s a great push. I feel more purposeful now. It’s in my hands to make this happen.”
