AF Band’s popular music group Vector welcomed home BY LT. CMDR. JIM REMINGTON JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING PUBLIC AFFAIRS
WASHINGTON – United States Air Force Band Commander, Col. Larry H. Lang led the way on July 2, in thanking, congratulating and welcoming home eight band members upon their return from a six-month deployment to U.S. Air Forces Central Command’s area of operations where they performed as the popular music band Vector. “We really, really appreciate you taking on this mission. It’s so important. It’s so vital,” Lang said. “I know you had a lot of different experiences over there. And sometimes maybe it didn’t feel like you were making an impact, but then there are others where you’re thinking ‘Oh, my gosh I’m so glad we we’re here.’’” Vector’s members were given a warm welcome home with a picnic
organized by the Chief’s Group, an assembly of the band’s chief master sergeants. Nearly all members of the band were present, as well as many family members. “We’re so proud of you, and we’re so very happy to have you home safe,” Lang said. “All these people showed up to congratulate you and thank you. That’s how much you were missed, and how much we love you. We care about you and we’re so glad you’re home safe and sound. Many of your family members are here to join you and be with us today because they are part of the team, too.” The band performed in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. It’s no surprise that most of Vector’s performances were for the troops deployed forward, but lesser known is there role performing on many occasions for U.S. embassy staffs, school children, and local foreign nationals.

Joint Base rings in July 4th holiday with block party BY PAUL BELLO JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING PUBLIC AFFAIRS
WASHINGTON – Joint Base AnacostiaBolling (JBAB) celebrated July 4th with a block party at the Slip Inn Bar and Grill – the first of its kind since becoming a joint base back in 2010. Food, drinks, music and prizes headlined the afternoon extravaganza near the Capital Cove Marina. The Independence Day celebration was concluded in style with a spectacular fireworks show on the National Mall, easily viewable from JBAB. When not feasting on food and beverages at the Slip Inn, families also enjoyed games and activities along the waterfront – courtesy of JBAB’s Child Youth Programs. Senior Airman David Reihle and his wife, Courtney, brought their two young children out for a day of fun. The family was looking forward to this time together. “A day like this reminds us of what’s im-
portant in life,” Reihle said. “It’s a time to give thanks to those who fight for us. It’s also a time to reflect on your loved ones and what they mean to you.” Wendy Michulkski and her husband, Army Staff Sgt. Scott Michulski, brought a blanket and cooler full of cold drinks and watermelon to the occasion. Together, they found a spot along the waterfront and settled themselves in for the night’s fireworks. “We wanted to make sure we got a good spot. We want to be close enough so we could see the fireworks and take some good pictures,” she said. “Independence Day is always a great time. Whether you’re an adult or a child, you’ll always have fun.” Rather than attend this year’s block party, Air Force Staff Sgt. Gregory Barnes decided to host his own party - right in his very own backyard at JBAB. Along with his wife, Raquel, they set up a canopy, ordered plenty

Joint Base police officers train at Dahlgren BY ANDREW REVELOS SOUTH POTOMAC PILOT
DAHLGREN, Va. - The Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) Police Department hosted police officers from Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) for advanced tactical training June 1921. The training was intended to sharpen the officers’ skills in several areas, such as active shooter response. The mini-course included classroom time, practical application, night vision training, live-fire and time in the VirTra Systems simulator. Bob Brooks, chief of NSASP police, was impressed with the JBAB police officers’ performance. “We offered this course to all the bases in the region, however only JBAB was able to send interested officers,” he said. “The officers that attended from JBAB did an outstanding job and definitely represented their department well. I, as well as all of the other instructors, were very impressed with their abilities, professionalism and enthusiasm.” For the practical application portion of the course, the JBAB police officers conducted activeshooter response drills inside one of Dahlgren’s buildings. In a mazelike layout, with multiple opposing danger areas, safely is a challenge for any police officer. Though, training can be tailored to all skill levels. Capt. Patrick Gardner, a police officer assigned to NSA Washington, added realism to the drills by role-playing the active shooter. Gardner fired at the JBAB officers with a blank-loaded pistol as the officers made entry into the facility. In pairs, the JBAB officers advanced, cleared rooms, eventually cornering the “bad guy” and taking him into custody. MACS Chris Merz challenged the JBAB officers with several scenarios in the VirTra Systems simulator. The system, with three large

Sgt. Carlos Ansley, left, a police officer assigned to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, takes a “suspect,” role-played by Capt. Patrick Gardner, a police officer assigned to Naval Support Activity Washington, into custody during training at Naval Support facility Dahlgren on June 20. screens that fill the trainee’s field of vision, is no mere video game; the training program “reacts” to trainees’ actions and a threat feedback feature lets officers know when they’ve been “shot” via a wireless electrical impulse device. One by one, the JBAB officers went through the scenario, with Merz making significant but subtle changes in between drills. Each officer went through a scenario without threat feedback before returning for drills that incorporated the feature. One JBAB officer drew his weapon too late; his body contorted slightly as the virtual sus-
pect “fired” and he received the threat feedback. Another officer, Cpl. John Reyes, completed his scenario without receiving any threat feedback, but he acknowledged the anxiety it caused with a relieved grin once he completed the drill. It is exceedingly difficult to replicate the stress police officers experience in real-life encounters with suspects, but the threat feedback feature comes close. “People understand that there’s a level of separation between them and a TV screen,” Merz said. “So what you have to do to make the training realistic is raise [the trainees’] level
of anticipation, raise their heart rates. A person’s brain goes into a fight or flight response in stressful situations and police officers have to train for that. When you have an adrenaline rush, your senses can shut down; first audio, then visual and eventually common sense thinking. Officers have one thing to rely on in those types of situations and that’s training.” Virtual reality-based training helps police officers achieve that level of proficiency and does so economically. “The best thing about the system is that it allows us to minimize the amount of resources we have to expend in order to train
officers,” Merz said, who has taken a lead role in operating the system since it was acquired last year. “While live-fire training is important, we can shoot thousands of simulated rounds in the VirTra System and train officers to a level that is commensurate with Navy standards. The system can also be customized to train to evolving security needs; it allows for growth.” The time spent by the JBAB police officers in the simulator was only part of the mini-course, which covered a lot of ground in three days. Time was spent brushing up on other vital law enforcement skills, such as weapons retention. The police officers from JBAB appreciated the chance to brush up on their law enforcement skills. “It’s fantastic training with advanced technical equipment and very diverse instructors with lots of experience,” said Sgt. Carlos Ansley, JBAB police officer. “No matter what skill level you’re at, you’re going to come here and you’re going to get quality training and learn something new, whether you’re a beginner or you’re an experienced officer. It’s very high-speed stuff.” Military law enforcement faces a threat environment that is always changing. Achieving and maintaining a high level of proficiency is important for every police officer, especially with regard to the active shooter threat. “It’s very needed training,” Ansley said. “Every officer on the street who’s carrying a weapon and responding to calls should have at least a basic level knowledge of this type of training, so they’re prepared. [Police officers] need to have the correct combat mindset and know what level of force to use, depending on the threat they are faced with. If it’s the highest level of threat, they need to be able to respond with the highest level of force. That’s the kind of training we get here.”

“I guess great minds think alike. Many of my neighbors are doing the same exact thing, so I can’t take credit for it being completely original,” Barnes joked. “A holiday like this is about having fun and appreciating what you have in life. Everyone here understands that. We get it.”

Upcoming play to feature Joint Base children BY PAUL BELLO JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Vector’s musical repertoire for the tour varied broadly across the popular music spectrum. They played sets that were principally focused on classic acts such as the Eagles, Stevie Wonder, Sting, and some British rock like the Cure. They also performed covers by many current and hot popular music artists such as Colbie Caillat and new country artists such as Lady Antebellum. They even performed what Tech. Sgt. Paige Martin, a vocalist for Vector, called “teeny bopper” music. “A lot of the teeny bop stuff we did wasn’t for the troops necessarily. A lot of what we did was for the schools,” Paige explained. “We visited a lot of schools in the local area in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

These kids were from different countries and knew every single word. They might not have spoken a word of English, but they knew every word to those tunes. That was great fun. Boy they went nuts in Saudi Arabia. We were rock stars!” Vector’s successful deployment and tour served multiple purposes: Band members provided some much needed entertainment and relaxation, breaking up the monotony for deployed Airmen and other service members serving in distant lands and, in some cases, very dangerous and demanding locations. But Vector’s members also served an equally important role as musical ambassadors representing the U.S. to local populations young and old, showing American spirit and optimism, while turning on smiles with the common language that speaks to the people of the world: music.
WASHINGTON – The Missoula Children’s Theatre of Montana (MCT) will be making a visit to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) with a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk” July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bolling Club. There is no cost to attend. As with any play, talent is needed. Auditions will be held at the JBAB Youth Center next week leading up to the performance. There is no cost to those interested in participating. Anyone, ages 5-18 is encouraged to try out for a part. In addition to actors, the theatre group will also need help behind the scenes with costumes and lighting. For more than 40 years, MCT has opened the hearts and minds of children through a creative process that includes teamwork. For the better part of a decade, the group has expanded its reach to include military children on bases across the U.S., including JBAB. This year alone, more than 65,000 kids will be cast in one

of the group’s many traveling tour shows around the country, according to Matt Lahrke, tour marketing associate for MCT. “We have a big partnership with the military, particularly on the east coast. We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback over the years from children and families. It’s been great,” Lahrke said. “Kids come aboard and work with our team on voice and diction. They can create their own music for the show and perform on stage. It’s very exciting and a lot of fun.” Darrilyn Young, program director for JBAB’s Child and Youth Programs, said the Navy has made it possible for installations like JBAB to participate in an endeavor like this. She added that approximately 100 children from JBAB and the National Capital Region (NCR) auditioned for last year’s play – with more than half making the cut. “It’s an intense, but fun learning experience,” Young said. “Kids come together, collaborate and have fun. That’s what it’s all about.” For more information on the upcoming play or auditions, call the Youth Center at 202-767-4003.
