EDITOR'S LETTER

Q&A EDITOR IN CHIEF MICHAEL STEELE Us Weekly, formerly the publication of choice to pass the time at the nail salon, has evolved from glossy guilty pleasure to a weekly ogle-fest that’s more than breakup, makeup, and baby bump intel for the starry-eyed. Under the mildmannered helm of Michael Steele, the Wenner mag has become the ultimate crib sheet for editors across the industry when it’s time to up the addictiveness ante and beef up newsstand sales. Written by Alexandra Ilyashov

HOW DID YOU END UP IN MAGAZINES? I was a social worker after college working as a case manager for mentally ill, formerly homeless residents of an SRO [single resident occupancy] building. Then I applied for an internship at Harper’s. HOW WERE YOUR EARLIEST YEARS AT THE MAGAZINE? The pace was insane. Janice had just gotten here. It was a young and fledgling staff, and the hours were crazy. We’d have a story meeting at 11 p.m. on a Thursday night. There was a lot of turnover in the year and a half that Bonnie was at the magazine, after I’d started. Once Janice took over, structure was put into place and the staff grew up a bit. Ten years later, many of those same people are married and have kids — it seems like half of the office has children under the age of six.

confident having us break their news for them. That’s part of why our readers trust us. They view Us as more credible. WHY IS US SO ADDICTIVE? We hire a lot of really smart people, and try not to get in the way! A lot of staffers have been at the magazine the entire time that I’ve been around, so there’s a lot of experience. It’s very collaborative and exciting. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TODAY'S NEWSSTAND? There are too many magazines! But our readers are smart enough to distinguish us from our competitors. That said, we do get lumped into a category, and we worry sometimes that the more shameless things our competitors do on a regular basis can bring us down. That’s why I sometimes wish they’d go out of business. HOW FIERCELY DO YOU COMPETE? We compete with People for cooperatives, access to celebrities, and breaking news. Online, it’s only us, People, and sometimes TMZ routinely breaking celebrity news. We will compete with the other celebrity titles for newsstand buyers because they do come up with outlandish stories, which fly off the shelves. But the moment you open up their magazines, you realize it’s all untrue. WHAT SETS YOU APART? We tend to be nicer than our competitors when we’re reporting a story very aggressively because our readers like celebrities.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM JANICE? She never checked her brain at the door. We are a guilty pleasure at Us Weekly, but we’re there to en- HOW DO YOU WIN AT THE NEWSSTAND? tertain you as well as inform you. HOW DO YOU REALLY FEEL ABOUT THE KARDASHIANS? We love them. I personally have met Kourtney and Khloé, but I haven’t met Kim yet. They’re

great. They’re currently suffering a PR crisis because of Kim’s wedding, but I hope they’ll recover. They’re very hardworking. They’ve opened their lives up to the world, and they don’t take themselves too seriously — which is great for a magazine like ours. IS YOUR STAFF AS INTERESTED AND SYMPATHETIC AS YOUR READERS? Are we all cynics behind closed doors? No! I think some cynicism can definitely creep into your day-to-day work, but for the most part, our staff really loves celebrities. If you don’t enjoy it, it’d be pretty hellish since it’s a lot of hours, a lot of hard work, and a lot of information to constantly process. DID THAT LATTER SKILL SET SUBSEQUENTLY DEVELOP? Oh, yes! It doesn’t take long. Before you know it, you get sucked in. WHO DO YOU HOPE GETS LOTS OF PLAY IN 2012? I’d love it if Adele would hook up with Ryan Gosling.

I’M UNCOMFORTABLE WITH SEX LEGEND RUMORS Written by Zach Johnson

Jack Nicholson has long been rumored to have bedded more than 2,000 women — a mighty feat for any man. But according to the 75-yearold actor, that number has been greatly exaggerated over the years. “I am an extreme person. If someone says, ‘Jack, you are a womanizer,’ I don’t deny it. But the life of a gigolo always ends badly,” the Oscar winner tells The UK’s The Sun. “That is one of the reasons I feel uncomfortable about all that ‘sex legend’ stuff.” “There are also women I have seen, intimately, for a very long time over my life,” he adds. “Unexpected, perhaps, but true.”

The Bucket List actor adds, “I have been in a lot of therapy over the years and have found it has helped. The therapist I use in Los Angeles says to me, ‘Jack, you are one of the best patients I’ve ever had.’ And I say, ‘Why is that, Sidney?’ He says. ‘You usually know what your problem is, you do what I tell you and that’s the end of the therapy.’” In hindsight, Nicholson wishes he would have been a more involved parent to 48-year-old Jennifer (with ex-wife Sandra Knight), 22-yearold Lorraine and 20-year-old Raymond (with ex-girlfriend Rebecca Broussard) and 32-yearold Honey (with ex-girlfriend Winnie Hollman). (Actress Susan Anspach has said her son, Caleb Goddard, was fathered by Nicholson, but the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest star has not confirmed her allegation.)

Nicholson — who has enjoyed high-profile relationships with Anjelica Huston and Janice Dickinson, among others — insists he’s much more mellow than he used to be. “Anger has always been a problem and every once in a while I just have to let it out. I always regret it later. “I didn’t see enough of my eldest daughter because I was trying to make a career,” he tells After a couple of hours I calm down and think, The Sun. He won the Academy Award for Best ‘What way could I have solved that problem Actor twice: for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest other than blowing up?’ I should have learned and for As Good as It Gets. He also won the how to do that long ago and that would have Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for made my life easier — with less apologizing.” the 1983 film Terms of Endearment.

When Nicholson first came to Hollywood, he worked as a gofer for animation legends William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at the MGM cartoon studio. Seeing his talent as an artist, they offered Nicholson a starting level position as an animation artist. However, citing his desire to become an actor, he declined.

Young and Optimistic at age 31

Wise with wisdom at age 75

He made his film debut in a low-budget teen drama The Cry Baby Killer, in 1958, playing the title role. For the following decade, Nicholson was a frequent collaborator with the film’s producer, Roger Corman. Corman directed Nicholson on several occasions, most notably in The Little Shop of Horrors, as masochistic dental patient Wilbur Force, and also in The Raven, The Terror, and The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. He worked frequently with director Monte Hellman as well on low-budget westerns, though two in particular, Ride in the Whirlwind and The Shooting, initially failed to find interest from any US film distributors but gained cult success on the art house circuit in France and were later sold to television. With his acting career heading nowhere, Nicholson seemed resigned to a career behind the camera as a writer/director. His first real taste of writing success was the LSD-fueled screenplay for the 1967 film, The Trip (directed by Corman), which starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Nicholson also co-wrote, with Bob Rafelson, the movie Head, which starred The Monkees. In addition, he also arranged the movie’s soundtrack. However, after a spot opened up in Fonda and Hopper’s Easy Rider, it led to his first big acting break. Nicholson played hard-drinking lawyer George Hanson, for which he received his first Oscar nomination. A Best Actor nomination came the following year for his persona-defining role in Five Easy Pieces (1970). Also that year, he appeared in the movie adaptation of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, although most of his performance was left on the cutting room floor. He was the first choice to play the role of Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist, but the role was turned over to Jason Miller. Other Nicholson roles included Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail (1973), for which he was awarded Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Roman Polanski noir thriller, Chinatown (1974). Nicholson was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for both films. Nicholson was friends with the director long before the death of Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate, at the hands of the Manson Family, and supported him in the days following the deaths. After Tate’s death, Nicholson began sleeping with a hammer under his pillow, and took breaks

20 | December 10, 2010 | US WEEKLY

from work to attend the Manson trial. It was at Nicholson’s home where the rape case for which Polanski was arrested occurred. Nicholson earned his first Best Actor Oscar for portraying Randle P. McMurphy in the movie adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, directed by Milo Forman in 1975. His Oscar was matched when Louise Fletcher received the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched. After this, he began to take more unusual roles. He took a small role in The Last Tycoon, opposite Robert De Niro. He took a less sympathetic role in Arthur Penn’s western The Missouri Breaks, specifically to work with Marlon Brando. He followed this by making his second directorial effort with the western comedy Goin’ South. His first movie as a director was a 1971 quirky release called Drive, He Said. Although he garnered no Academy Award for Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (1980), it remains one of his more significant roles. His second Oscar, the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, came for his role of retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment (1983), directed by James L. Brooks. Nicholson continued to work prolifically in the 1980s, starring in such films as The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), Reds (1981), Prizzi’s Honor (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Broadcast News (1987), and Ironweed (1987). Three Oscar nominations also followed (Reds, Prizzi’s Honor, and Ironweed). Nicholson introduced several acts at Live Aid at the JFK Stadium in July 1985. He turned down the role of John Book in Witness. The 1989 Batman movie, wherein Nicholson played the psychotic murderer and villain, The Joker, was an international smash hit, and a lucrative percentage deal earned Nicholson about $60 million. For his role as hot-headed Col. Nathan R. Jessup in A Few Good Men (1992), a movie about a murder in a U.S. Marine Corpsunit, Nicholson received yet another Academy nomination. Nicholson went on to win his next Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Melvin Udall, a mean-spirited, compulsive obsessive neurotic author in As Good as It Gets (1997). again directed by Brooks. His Oscar was matched with the Academy Award for Best Actress for Helen Hunt as a Manhattan waitress drawn into a love/hate friendship with Udall, a frequent diner in the restaurant in which she worked. In 2001, Nicholson was the first actor to receive the Stanislavsky Award at the Moscow International Film Festival for “conquering the heights of acting and faithfulness”.

He is tied with Walter Brennan for most acting wins by a male actor (three). Nicholson was well known for playing villainous roles such as Jack Torrance in The Shining, Frank Costello in The Departed, and the Joker in 1989’s Batman, among many other roles. Nicholson was one of only two actors to be nominated for an Academy Award for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s; the other is Michael Caine.

“I GIVE OUT ADVICE ALL THE TIME. I SAY, ‘DO NOT LIE, DO NOT STEAL AND DO NOT BE AFRAID.’ ESPECIALLY, THE LAST ONE. FEAR STOPS US FROM DOING THINGS... I ALSO SAY IT’S THE THINGS THAT YOU DO NOT DO IN LIFE THAT CAUSE REGRET.”

Regardless of all the success, fame, and fortune. Nicholson wishes he would have spent more time with his family. “I have a daughter, Lorraine, and a son, Raymond, with whom I was able to spend much more time.” Over the years, the Shining star has picked up a few words of wisdom he often imparts on his three children.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY POSES TOPLESS Written by Kevin O'Leary

Keira Knightley has no qualms about taking her top off! The 27 -year -old actress appears nearly nude on the December cover of Allure, wearing only a Chanel jacket and Tom Ford tuxedo pants. The Anna Karenina star also poses topless in the accompanying article. “I’m quite rigorous about what gets exposed,” the British beauty says of appearing nude on film. “No bottom half! Wearing a Chanel jacket and nothing under it for the cover, and pieces of a Tom Ford tuxedo, Knightley, who stars in Anna Karenina, says, “I like a masculine look; I feel comfortable in it.” Knightley continues: “I was only angry when they were really droopy. For (2004 film) King Arthur, for a poster, they gave me these really strange droopy (ones)... I thought, well if you're going to make me fantasy breasts, at least make perky breasts.” Knightley also addresses hurtful accusations that she is too skinny. “The anorexic stuff — all of that — it's always going to have an impact, so I think it did hit pretty hard . Because you go, oh, maybe that's right! I knew I wasn't anorexic, but maybe my body is somehow not right.” On feminism: “I am a feminist, but I clearly objectify myself -so that right there is a total contradiction to feminist principles.” And of her career, she says: “It’s very, very hard on women who get older…I can say that when I’m 27, you know. Talk to me when I’m 37.” Keira Knightley is known mainly for her impressive acting abilities and her tendency towards dramatic period films (sometimes it seems like she wears corsets exclusively). But in the December issue of Allure, the British actress spends a lot of time discussing another personal asset: her breasts. In an industry where everyone and everything seems to be going under the knife, Knightley embraces her figure and now she’s showing us why! While most women dream of perky breast, and even pay the big bucks for them, Knightley is glad to have her, below average, chest and knows that it’s her talent that shines.

All the chest talk makes sense, given how topless Keira is for the Allure shoot. Snapped by Mario Testino, one photos shows Keira in an open Chanel jacket with nothing underneath and another with nothing covering her top but a strategically placed drinking glass. But it’s a tad ironic: don’t these pictures seem to be altered, too? We’re sensing a case of “invisible nipples” on the cover, i.e. nipples that have suddenly disappeared with a touch of Photoshop. Got to keep things appropriate, we suppose... The December issue of Allure hits newsstands November 20, 2012.

We are all connected by love. A simple message, to be sure — yet, in this epic, it’s delivered in the form of an exasperating, head-scratching puzzle. The genre-skipping narrative unfolds via six story lines spanning six centuries, with actors playing multiple parts. In the most suspenseful arc, a journalist (Halle Berry) takes on a nuclear-power chief (Hugh Grant) in 1970s San Francisco. On the other end of the

quality spectrum, a tribesman (Tom Hanks) teams up with Berry’s explorer in a nonsensical post apocalyptic drama. Just when a character makes a breakthrough, directors Andy & Lana Wachowski (The Matrix trilogy) abruptly change lanes. For 172 minutes. Appreciate the far reaching effort. Then she’s baffled as to why it didn’t work.” Case in point? Swift recently plopped down $5 million on a house in the same neighborhood as Kennedy, shortly after she went public with her romance with the 18-year -old high school student. After an intense couple months of dating, Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy have broken up, a close friend of the singer confirms exclusively to Us Weekly. “They quietly parted ways a while ago,” the friend explains of the We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together crooner, 22, and the high school senior, 18. “It was just a distance thing. No hard feelings. They're fine.” First spotted with the six-time Grammy winner at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannisport, MA in July, Conor is the son of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy. But despite Swift’s speedy summertime bond with her new man and his brood, the romance had to take a backseat to Swift’s work duties. “It’s been over a month since they’ve even seen each other,” the friend explains. “With her promotion for Red, she has no time off until the end of the year.”

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT KATE MIDDLETON

Kate Middleton has the Midas touch when it comes to making just about anything seem like it should probably be in your closet, too. This covet-worthy list includes everything from her go-to nude L.K. Bennett pumps and dreamy Alexander McQueen wedding dress, to that iconic blue Issa wrap dress — and now, we think it's safe to assume we can add this skirt suit into the ranks. The royal beauty chose an oxblood-hued Paule Ka set ($1380) to make her standout case for the skirt suit, and here are the only two reasons you need to, er, follow suit. One if you needed yet another reason to be convinced of this rich burgundy color's seasonal appeal, look no further. Two the skirt suit — as worn by Kate — isn't nearly as stuffy or as matronly as we once imagined it to be. In fact, we're absolutely loving its fresh tailored feel (hello, double-breasted blazer!) and feminine edge (sometimes it's more fun to wear a girly circle skirt to work). Thus, we're on board with her latest look and its versatility in the office-chic department. We'd say this is for the girl who doesn't always want to take the trouser approach to her work attire. It's Fall-appropriate (opaque black tights and black suede pumps included) and provides a perfect example of how to switch things up with polished finesse. If you're more of a boots-in-cold-weather girl, then a slick pair of riding-style boots will keep the professional outfit intact.
