Boaters must attend class before renting These one-hour orientation classes on April 4 and April 20 are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Before attending class, boater must take and pass a free on-line boater safety course at www.boatus.org. Call the Air Base ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.

Barrier Island boat safaris
These are wonderful, scenic boat safaris to the barrier island of Bulls Bay off the coast of Charleston. We’ll travel the intercoastal waterway to our destination and take in the beauty of Lowcountry tidal marshes and possibly get to travel with the dolphins. At Bulls Bay, you can hike the beach, go shell hunting or just catch some rays. Fantastic photo opportunities during this trip. Cost: R4R, $20; regular price, $75. With a limited amount of spaces available, advance reservations are a must. If enough interest warrants, we will continue to schedule this trip monthly, depending on the tides. Zip the Zoo
April 22 This is a great family trip with something for everyone. We’ll head to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia around 8 a.m., from the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center and walk into the zoo about two hours later. The next several hours are yours to spend leisurely touring the dozens of wonderful exhibits and attractions. During our stay, you can also ride the zipline above zoo. This exciting way to have a bird’s eye view of the zoo. Zipline Riders must weigh at least 70 lbs., but not more than 250 lbs. Cost for the trip is $50 per person. Advance sign-ups needed. Cape Romain offers a tour of the lighthouse island only four times a year! the 1827 lighthouse is the oldest of its kind in the U.S. still standing. With a six-mile boat ride out to the Island, you’ll learn the historical facts of the Island along with exploring it! The $25 price includes transportation, boat ride/tour, lighthouse tour, admission and snacks. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 8 a.m., returning around 6 p.m. Tandem Sky dive - April 8. Walterboro, S.C. Jump out of a plane because your mother told you not to! The $100 price includes transportation to Sky dive Walterboro and a tandem sky dive from 10,500 feet! Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 7:15 a.m., returning around 6 p.m. Jet Ski safaris - April 9. Isle of Palms, S.C. (Active duty only on this trip) Join LIBERTY/SAI on a wild ride on the Intercoastal Waterway and into the Barrier Islands off Charleston. This high speed adventure is a must. Cost is $40. First trip departs the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center at 9 a.m., returning around 12:30 p.m. The second trip leaves the Bowman Center at 11 a.m., returning at approximately 2 p.m. Dog Night at Liberty - April 13. Bowman Center. Come socialize with some Great Danes that are being brought to base for a fun filled night to play! MWR will provide the dogs, we just need YOU! Lots of love and licks for all. Right outside the Bowman building. Free event; 5:30-7:30 p.m. Kayak to Capers Island - April 15-16. Capers Island, S.C. We are kayaking to the uninhabited Capers Island, off the coast of Awendaw. The trip out to the island is approximately six miles. We will set up camp for the night while cooking dinner over a moonlit fire, then paddle back after breakfast the next morning. Don’t worry, everyone gets to sleep in! The $70 price includes transportation, single kayaks, tents, sleeping bags, all food, life vests, guided expedition tour, and snacks. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 7 a.m. Saturday, returning on Sunday around 7 p.m. Bicycle tour of historic Charleston - April 16. Spend the day in Charleston, viewing the sights and sounds of this beautiful city from your bike. Lunch will be on your own. Bring your bike if you wish. $15. Departs the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center at 8 a.m., returning around 4 p.m. Riverbanks Zoo and zipline - April 22. Columbia, S.C. Other than being chased around by a lowlands gorilla, this is the best adrenaline rush you’ll ever have at a zoo! Come enjoy seeing exotic animals and then experience a fun, exhilarating thrill when you zip line 1,000 feet over the Saluda River. The $50 price includes zip line tour, transportation, admission to the zoo and snacks. Departs the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center at 8 a.m. Riverbanks Zoo and gardens - April 22. Columbia, S.C. The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a 170-acre zoo, aquarium and botanical garden located along the Saluda River in Columbia, South Carolina. (Trip for only SAI/LIBERTY-eligible personnel) Join the LIBERTY on a trip to beautiful Biltmore Estates for the annual Festival of Flowers. This palatial mansion is the largest private residence in America, sitting on 8,000 acres of manicured lawn and landscape. Visually stunning. Departure time from the Bowman quarterdeck to be determined. *Meals at own cost* Jekyll Island day trip - April 29. Jekyll Island, Ga. Enjoy a day of biking an island full of historic landmarks, a driftwood beach, the Jekyll Turtle Rehabilitation Center. At the end the day, we’ll have dinner on the neighboring island of St. Simon. You will be given a map of the Island where you can adventure on your own, or stick with the guide. Don’t worry, Jekyll Island isn’t big enough to get lost on! Operation Megaphone late-night fun, competition

Air Base Youth Programs is heading off to college April 11 & 12... but just for the day. All 9-12th grade high school students are invited to join the staff as they take prospective Cougars on a campus tour and meet with the admissions office.
