SWIM LESSON SIGN-UPS, PASSES AVAILABLE THIS MONTH

The Air Base pool opens May 26, with the first session of youth swim lessons beginning June 5. Pool hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 12-7 p.m. for recreational swimming. Fitness swimming is 11 a.m. 12 p.m., on the same days. Daily admission is $3.50 per person, with a maximum of $10 per family. All active duty E1-E4 are admitted free. Seasonal swim passes are available. An individual pass is $42, a family pass for two to four members is $70 and a seasonal pass for five members in the same family is $88. There is a $100 maximum for families of six or larger. Swim lessons are $40 per child per session. Two lesson times are available for each session: 9-9:45 a.m. and 10-10:35 a.m. Session dates are June 5-15, June 26 - July 6 and July 17-27. A parent-tot session is June 12-15, 5-5:30 p.m. The cost is $30. Swim lesson sign-ups begin April 16.

Zipline & Hiking Excursion

These one-hour orientation classes are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Before attending class, boater must take and pass a free on-line boater safety course at www.boatus.org. Call the Air Base ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.

CAPE ROMAIN LIGHTHOUSE TOUR APRIL 24

Only four times a year Cape Romain offers a tour of the lighthouse island where you can view two historic sites. The 1827 lighthouse is the oldest of its kind still standing in the U.S. With a six-mile boat ride out to the Island, you’ll learn the historical facts of the Island along with exploring it! The $25 per person price includes transportation, boat ride/tour and lighthouse tour. Departs from the Air Base ORC. Advance sign-up needed. Call for more details.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK CAMPING TRIP MAY 5-6

This is a exciting opportunity to experience one of the most visited national parks in the United States. The $40 per person cost covers transportation, tents, sleeping bags and one meal each day. Campers must be a minimum of 18 years old. Advance reservations needed. Limited number of spaces.

LET’S GET VERTICAL!

The Air Base ORC offers an indoor and mobile climbing wall. The indoor wall is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Climbers need to weigh a minimum of 50 lbs. in order to climb on the auto-belay wall. Cost is $6 for first-time users; $5 for every subsequent climbing session. The mobile climbing wall is available by reservation for large events or parties on and off base. Price varies, depending on dates/ times needed and number of climbers. Stop by or call for more details.

April 21-22 Come join the ORC for a weekend of zip lining and hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. Reach speeds up to 65 mph on the longest zip line east of the Mississippi River. Hiking is in the gorgeous, lush Pisgah National Forest. Trip requirements: Minimum age - 18; maximum weight - 240 lbs. Price: $120, which includes zip line experience, park fees and hotel stay based on double occupancy. All meals at own cost. Advanced sign-up required.

Sailing in Charleston Harbor: May 2. Charleston. This is a relaxing afternoon of sailing around the beautiful Charleston Harbor. You can be a part of the crew or sit back, relax and enjoy the quietness of the water. Free. Any military member, Wounded Warrior or retiree can participate in this event. Trip departs from the Air Base ORC. Time: TBA. Kayak to Capers Island Overnighter: May 5-6. Capers Island, S.C. (SAI/LIB) Take your adventuring to the next level! We will kayak six miles to a deserted island off the coast of Charleston, hike the trails on the Island and finish the day with a beach front campfire cookout and camping. We will have plenty of games to play along with learning about the salt marsh and what inhabits the coastal islands. $100. Price includes: transportation, all gear (sleeping bags, kayaks, pads, tents, etc.) all food and beach games. Departs from “The Dive” on the Weapons Station at 8:30 a.m., returning Sunday around 5 p.m. Smoky Mountain National Park Camping: May 5-6. Gatlinburg, Tenn. (FF) Here’s your opportunity to hike and camp in one of the most scenic and highly-desired park locations on the east coast - Smoky Mountain National Park. $50 per person. Price includes transportation, park entrance fee, tents, sleeping bags, snacks and breakfast every morning. Departs the Air Base ORC at 6 a.m., May 5, returning at approximately 9 p.m. the following day. Beach Horseback Ride: May 5. Seabrook Island, S.C. (R4R) This is a scenic, relaxing horseback ride on the beachs of beautiful Seabrook Island. Trip is for inexperienced and experienced riders. Must be at least 8 years old to ride and weight no more than 250 lbs. $45. Departs the Air Base ORC at 7 a.m., returning around 12 p.m. Horseback Trail Ride: May 5. Seabrook Island, S.C. (R4R) Take a leisurely horseback ride through some luscious, deep wooded areas and along island marshes on this Seabrook Island excursion. Trip is for inexperienced and experienced riders. Must be at least 8 years old to ride and weight no more than 250 lbs. $30. Departs The Dive on the Weapons Station at 9:45 a.m. returning at approximately 2 p.m. Jet Ski Safari: May 6 & 13. Isle of Palms, S.C. (SAI/LIB) Join us on a ride up the Intercostal Waterway and into the Barrier Islands off Charleston. This scenic and sometimes high speed adventure is a must, especially for newcomers to the Lowcountry. $40. May 6 trip departs from the Air Base ORC, with the May 13 trip leaving from The Dive on the Weapons Station. Departure times TBA. Tandem Skydiving: May 12. Walterboro, S.C. (SAI/LIB) Jump out of a plane because your mother told you not to! The $100 price includes transportation, tandem sky dive from 10,500 feet and instruction. Must be at least 18 years old and weigh absolutely no more than 220 lbs. The trip departs from The Dive on the Weapons Station at 7:15 a.m., returning at approximately 5:30 p.m. All meals at your own cost. Charleston Harbor Cruise: May 15. Charleston. This leisurely tour will cruise by some of Charleston’s most famous sites, including Charles Towne Landing, Ft. Sumter, the Citadel and the USS Yorktown aboard the ORC’s new pontoon boat. $10. Price includes transportation and boat ride. Passengers may bring food and drink on board. Minimum age for this trip is 10 years old. Departs the Air Base ORC at 4:30 p.m. Speed boat Adventure Tour: May 19. Charleston. (SAI/LIB) Have you ever wanted to drive your own speed boat? Here’s your chance! The rental of the boat comes with a 13-mile tour of the Charleston harbor and narrated tours of the Battery, USS Yorktown and the downtown Charleston sky line. $50. Departs The Dive on the Weapons Station at 10 a.m., returning around 2:30 p.m. National Whitewater Rafting Center : May 19. Charlotte, N.C. (SAI/LIB) If you enjoy a good adrenaline rush, take this trip! We will conquer whitewater rapids, high and low ropes courses, bike the many trails in the park and much more! $50. Departs from The Dive on the Weapons Station at 6:30 a.m., and arrives back at approximately 10:30 p.m. Stand-up Paddleboard Sunset Tour : May 20. Charleston. (SAI/LIB) Enjoy the scenery of beautiful Shem Creek on a stand-up paddleboard and get the chance to paddle with the local dolphins and other friendly wildlife in the area! If you’ve never paddled before, don’t worry - we’ll show you how it’s done. $20. Departs from The Dive on the Weapons Station at 4 p.m., returning around 10 p.m. Shark Fishing : May 20. Charleston. (R4R) It’s fishing season again, so we thought we should go after the biggest predator in the ocean! Come join on us on this exciting shark fishing trip outside of the Charleston harbor. $30.Trip includes bait, tackle and instruction. Trip leaves from the Leeds Avenue landing at 9 a.m.

A sport that’s sweeping the nation, FootGolf combines the elements of soccer and golf to create a fun-filled game for all ages. Using traditional golf rules and etiquette, a soccer ball replaces the golf ball and your feet are used instead of clubs. With no prior experience needed, a game of FootGolf can be enjoyed by the entire family. Soccer balls are available should you need them or you may bring your own ball and waive the $4 ball rental fee. APRIL 20, 7-10 P.M. WEAPONS STATION It’s a Kids Night In and a parent’s night out all at the same time! Youth can have three hours of miniOlympics games, fun and going for the gold while the parents do... whatever. We’ll have light snacks, so make sure that your youth has a good dinner before arriving. BABY-SITTERS CLASS APRIL 3, 12 P.M. AIR BASE

This class is for ages 11-16. Upon successfully completing the course, youth will be certified as American Red Cross baby-sitters. For those age 13 and up who complete the class, they can be added to the Youth Programs “available babysitters” list. Cost for the class is $45 for Youth Programs members; $50 for nonmembers. HOOPS FOR HUNGER

APRIL 12, 5-7 P.M. WEAPONS STATION - SAM’S GYM Here’s a great opportunity for JB Charleston youth to show off some of the roundball skills, while helping to feed those housed in local shelters. Sign-ups are needed by April 10. Teams will compete in a bracket tournament-style games. There are kids teams and adults teams. Adult team ages: 13 and up; child team ages: 7 -12 years old. Kids games will be seven minutes and be played between adult games, which are 15 minutes. Teams will be divided equally by ages. All donations collected will help feed people in our local community. Our previous Hoops for Hunger raised more than 500 lbs. of food. This session’s goal is 750 lbs. Volunteers are needed to help run event. We are currently collecting canned goods for those who would just like to donate. There will be light snacks available for one canned good. Players are asked to bring three canned goods to participate. Spectators are welcome and asked to bring one can per person. For more details, call the Weapons Station youth center at (843) 794-7809.

BASE YOUTH CAN EARN CONGRESSIONAL AWARDS Young Americans ages 13½ to 23 are invited to challenge themselves to set, plan and achieve goals in four program areas: • Volunteer/public service • Personal development • Physical Fitness • Expedition/ exploration activities. Participants will be recognized with bronze and silver medals at local, city or state ceremonies.
