Planning key to start of successful school year Starting a new school year can be a time of great excitement, stress … and anxiety. Help ease those worries with some proven tips. • Meet the teachers & tour the school during open houses. It’s a three-way relationship between you, your child and their teacher, and by working together positively you help your child enjoy going to school and learning. You can also build mutually-supportive relationships with other parents; networking with other back-to-school parents promotes the “village” approach and helps to alleviate the myth of “doing this by myself.” • Join the PTA/PTO, School Improvement Councils, Booster Clubs, and/or Title I Teams. Being involved takes time, but your child will notice that you value their school/education. The side benefit is networking with other parents/families/school administration. • Create a Family Calendar. Plan and write down activities and make lists to prioritize and organize
sports events, plays, performances, etc. Creating a schedule for daily study time, and knowing when your child is testing, is also beneficial. Don’t forget to schedule quiet time, and remember to say no when necessary. • Taking care of yourself and having fun is essential too: eating healthily as a family encourages good habits while feeding the body and the brain, staying active and physically fit with the family empowers health and builds self-esteem. Also, be aware of the new National Sleep Foundation recommendations: it is suggested that preschoolers get 10-13 hours of sleep, preteens 9-11 hours, and teens are suggested to have 8-10 hours. Preparation, participation, and a positive attitude will help ease the back to school transition, and start the school year right. Contact Christopher Gerry, JB Charleston School Liaison Officer at (843) 963-4406 or christopher.gerry@us.af.mil for more information. August 2018
