reading Reversing the ‘Summer Slide’

The start of school signals a new beginning for students and teachers. Summer fun has also given way to the dreaded "Summer Slide" for students. Regression, or loss of skills gained the previous school year, can be reduced with a regular reading regimen. Here are three steps recommended for summer, and even now these are good habits to get your child ready to learn NOW and throughout the school year: - Regular Reading Outside of School: Reading a variety of materials keeps reading from being boring to a child. Help them select topics they enjoy, within their reading levels. Teachers can help you select materials, and libraries are an excellent source of grade appropriate materials. Have your child tell you about what they read that day, and encourage some analysis or discussion appropriate to their age. This helps them grow as readers, and provides parent/child engagement.

- Reading Aloud: Reading aloud together is a great way to interact with your child, and demonstrate that you value reading. Modeling for your child is important, even if it is only 20-30 minutes per day. This applies to children of any age, including infants. If you have ever watched a toddler reading a book, they often make up stories aloud, using images in the book. Let your older children read or recite to you as their skills improve. - Make Reading Fun: Don't force reading, and don't read when angry. Make it fun. Encourage them to read things they like, perhaps at or slightly above their actual reading level. If there is time perhaps they can summarize the reading, draw pictures, or make a play. Connect reading to enjoyment, and you will create a lifelong reader. Watch for more "Start of School” suggestions on Facebook: JB Charleston School Liaison Office
