Base has resources to take the chaos out of spouse job searches As a military spouse, finding employment can be a challenge. Frequent PCS moves, deployments, childcare, or lack of immediate family support can certainly hinder the job search and networking. There are three things a military spouse can do to prepare to advance a career. One: Update your resume with all relevant and new skills or accomplishments. This includes updating your LinkedIn profile. Are you using a functional, chronological, or a federal resume? Don’t forget to list volunteer positions that translate to work skills! Get free professional resume help at your local Airman & Family Readiness Center / Fleet & Family Support Center if necessary. Two: Go back to school. MyCAA and other military spouse scholarships are available to help offset tuition costs. Gaining an extra certification may be the factor to getting hired. Free comprehensive counseling services are available. Visit MilitaryOneSource forinformation on MyCAA, Spouse Employment and Career Opportunities (SECO), Spouse Preference, and many other topics regarding employment and education. Three: Network! Use social media to join area specific Facebook groups and ask questions. Connect with military spouses that you’ve met on LinkedIn for networking. If you have a business in mind that you want to work for, follow that company on social media to determine their hiring practices and potential openings. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and network, network, network! Military spouses have direct access to the resources for successful career planning. Spouses of any service branch are eligible to receive employment and education assistance at their closest Airman & Family Readiness Center or Fleet & Family Support Center. Let that be your first stop to networking! For more information call (843) 963-8883. November 2017
