Boat orientation class necessity before using power boats
These one-hour orientation classes on Oct. 11 and Oct. 25 are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Participants need only attend one of the sessions. Before attending class, boater must take a free online boater safety course at www.boatus.org and pass with a minimum score of 80%. Call the Air Base ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.
Let’s go shrimping! Oct. 19 & 20 We will show you how to make bait, load a net and then cast it. You keep what you haul in. Cost per person is $20. A current S.C. saltwater fishing license is required by everyone on these local trips. Advance sign-up also needed. Call for more information.

The Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center now has specially-discounted, four-day Park Hopper passes, that include the Water Park, for the astounding price of only $194.50 each! This is nearly a $200 savings over the gate price. Sales are limited to six passes per eligible person or spouse (but, not both) and must be purchased at the same time. The ORC has only a limited number of these passes on hand at any one time, so plan ahead and purchase them at least four weeks in advance of going to Orlando. Sign-up for events at the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center or at the Liberty office in the Bowman Center on the Weapons Station. Riverbanks Zoo & Hike - Oct. 1. Columbia, S.C. - We’ll start our day with a relaxing hike in Sesquicentennial State Park, then it’s off to Riverbanks Zoo - home to more than 2,000 animals from around the world. $30. Price includes transportation, entrance fees for the state park, zoo & Botanical Gardens and light breakfast. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 8 a.m., returning around 9 p.m. Isle of Palms bike trip - Oct. 2. Isle of Palms, S.C. - Tour Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms on this fun bike trip. See historical points along the ways and a stop by the beach. $20 Riders provided their own beverages and snacks. Bring your own bike or use one of ours. Trip departs the Air Base ORC at 9 a.m., and returns at approximately 4 p.m. 3D Archery - Oct. 7. Air Base ORC - Air Force families are invited to come have some fun and learn how to shoot a recurve bow like those in “The Hunger Games.” Instruction will be given on how to string the bow and learn how to properly shoot the bow at 3D targets. $5 per family. This 90-minute program starts at 5:30 p.m. Chimney Rock hike - Oct. 8. Chimney Rock, N.C. - Hike in the beautiful Chimney Rock State Park where you will have some of the best autumn views the Southeast has to offer. We’ll end the evening with dinner overlooking the Rocky Broad River. $50 per person. Price includes transportation, park admission and a light lunch for the hike. There will be two departure locations - the Air Base ORC for Air Force families, and the Bowman Center for Navy folks. Trip leaves both locations at 7 a.m., and returns around 10 p.m. Dog Play Date - Oct. 13. Bowman Center, Weapons Station - Join the Liberty and ORC staff for a few hours of stress relief. We will have dogs available from 5:30 to 8 p.m., for petting, hugging and playing. You provide the love, they’ll provide the hair and drool. Come by and share the love. Gymnastics & Parkour - Oct. 14. Summerville, S.C. - From beginners to experienced, come enjoy a private two-hour session of free range gym time. This gymnastics gym features climbing rope, bars, beams, spring flooring, foam pit, trampoline track and much more! $12. Price includes transportation and private gym session. (Instruction upon request during session). Trip leaves the Bowman Center at 7 p.m., and returns at approximately 11 p.m. Wild Blue Ropes/Angel Oak Adventure - Oct. 15. James Island, S.C. Explore the largest high ropes course on the East Coast with 72 different obstacles 30 feet in the air, including their very own, Ninja Warrior course. $25. Price includes transportation, two hours of climbing, visit to Angel Oak, plus snacks and water. We’ll stop for dinner before heading back. (Cost is at your expense.) Trip departs from the Bowman quarterdeck at 12:15 p.m., and returns at approximately 8 p.m. Beach volunteer - Oct. 16. Get in some volunteer service hours cleaning a local beach! We will have a small picnic while learning about sea life facts then walk the beach & local roads for the clean up. Free trip. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 10 a.m., returning around 8 p.m. Shrimping Program - Oct. 19-20. Local waters. You will learn how to make bait balls, put marker poles down and use a cast net to catch shrimp during shrimp baiting season. Plus, you can bring home fresh shrimp. $20. Current SC saltwater fishing license is required. Departs Leeds Avenue dock at 5 p.m. Local Charleston tour - Oct. 22. Charleston, S.C. - Come join Liberty and SAI on a tour of the local adventures here in Charleston. We’ll visit the Morris Island Lighthouse beach area, Ravenel Bridge waterfront park & trail, and Fort Moultrie area. $15. Price includes all local tour attractions, picnic under the bridge and a relaxing day in Charleston. Trip will depart from the Bowman Center at 9:45 a.m., returning at approximately 7 p.m. Smoky Mountain train ride - Oct. 22-23. Cherokee, N.C. - Day 1 is a fun-filled trip to the Smoky Mountains and experiencing Harrah’s Casino at night. Then on Day 2, we’re off to Bryson City to board the train for our railway adventure of breathtaking autumn scenery. $240. Price includes transportation, one-night’s lodging (double occupancy) and train ride. Limited spaces available, so sign up now. West Farm corn maze - Oct. 23. Goose Creek, S.C. - If Fall is one of your favority times of the year, then you’ll love to get lost in a 2.8 mile corn maze! You’ll have to use your best map reading skills to catch all the checkpoints throughout the maze! $20. Price includes transportation, the corn maze admission, popcorn and drinks. Trip departs from the Bowman Center at 2 p.m., returning around 7 p.m. Trunk or Treat and Spooky Story Night - Oct. 28. Here are some great events that provide fun for everyone, plus a safe venue for the little ghosts and goblins to trick or treat. A “Trunk or Treat” will be held at the Air Base Library and at Locklear Park on the Weapons Station, starting at 6 p.m. Vehicles will be decorated and the owners will be handing out treats as kids visit the displays. The Air Base staff will also be reading some fun not-so-scary spooky stories. Volunteer helpers and folks who would like to decorate their “ride” and give out candy are needed at both locations! Weapons Station volunteers can sign up at the Youth Center or the Bowman game room. Air Base volunteers and “Trunk or Treaters” can stop by Air Base Library or the Youth Center to register. Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) - Oct. 29. Shem Creek, S.C. Enjoy the scenery on a stand-up paddleboard and get the chance to paddle with the local dolphins in the creek along with much more wildlife! $33. Price includes transportation, instruction, guide, boards and lunch. Departs from the Bowman quarterdeck at 6 a.m., and returns around 2 p.m. October 2016

Baby-sitters class Oct. 14, 12:30-6:30 p.m. Air Base Youth Center This Red Cross-certified course focuses on potential sitters ages 11-16. Youth will learn about the business of baby-sitting, first aid for infants and children, how to handle emergencies and also becoming a responsible sitter. Cost is $45 for Youth Center members; $50 for all others. Space is limited for this class. Deadline to register is Oct. 12.

Honoring our "Little Heroes" Tuesday, Oct. 11 - 6 p.m. This month, JB Charleston wants to acknowledge our military children at a “Little Heroes Ceremony.” These are children of parents who have recently deployed. This wonderful ceremony honors the service, sacrifices and strength of character of these little patriots. They endure separations and long work hours while knowing that their parents are serving their country and making it a better place for them. The “Little Heroes Ceremony” is our way to say thank you for that sacrifice. Each child will be presented a medallion with a C-17 imprinted on it, along with a certificate signed by the parent’s respective wing commander.
