SMOKY MOUNTAIN TRAIN RIDE OCT. 25-26 - BRYSON, N.C.

This is no doubt one of our most popular excursions of the year. The first night we stay at the Cherokee Casino Hotel for some gaming excitement and fun. The next morning, it’s off to the train station to begin a four-hour train ride through the ravines and valleys to view the breathtaking scenery of the Great Smoky Mountain in full autumn color. BOAT ORIENTATIONS OCT. 10 & OCT. 24

These one-hour orientation classes are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Before attending class, boater must take and pass a free on-line boater safety course at www.boatus.org. Call the Air Base ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.

Only four times a year Cape Romain offers a tour of the lighthouse island where you can view two historic sites. Pisgah National Forest Camping Trip: (SAI/LIB) Oct. 7 & 8. North Carolina. Enjoy the beautiful Appalachian Mountains on this two day hiking/camping trip. $30. Departs the AB ORC at 9 a.m. on Saturday, returning Sunday around 8 p.m. Escape in 60: (SAI/LIB) Oct. 8. Charleston. Come join LIBERTY & SAI as we work together as a team to escape a prison room in just 60 minutes! If you’re an escape artist, maybe you’ll escape in less! $20. Price includes transportation, admission and downtown tour. Departs from the Bowman quarterdeck at 3 p.m., returning around 11:30 p.m. Ninja Warrior Course: (SAI/LIB) Oct. 12. Charleston. Watch as hawks, falcons, owls, eagles and vultures soar above, and learn about their hunting and flying techniques. We will also visit the Sewee Nature Center to see some endangered Red Wolves. $15. Departs the AB ORC at 9:15 a.m.; returning around 4 p.m. Lunch at own cost. Chimney Rock Hike (SAI/LIB) Oct. 14. Lake Lure, N.C. Hike in beautiful Chimney Rock State Park where you will view some of the best autumn scenery in the Southeast. Dinner location will be overlooking the Rocky Broad River. $30. This 72-obstacle high ropes course is challenging and will have swinging from the tree tops! This 2½ hour Charleston Culinary Tour will immerse you in the history and culture of the Lowcountry. You will discover how our unique cuisine has evolved over the past 300+ years, while sampling delicious specialties from local eateries, markets, bakeries, restaurants and culinary land marks. Smoky Mountain Train Ride: Oct. 25-26. Bryson, N.C. We’ll stay at the Cherokee Casino Hotel Wednesday night, then hop aboard the train the next morning for a breathtaking four-hour autumn ride throught the valleys and ravines of the Smoky Mountains. $205 based on double occupancy. Advance reservations a must. Kayak Tybee Island: (SAI/LIB) Oct. 28. Tybee Island, Ga. Come have a blast on this five-hour kayak trip through the amazing and diverse marshlands of Tybee Island. Format for the championship is 36-hole, individual stroke play. First round will be on the Redbank Plantation course on the Weapons Station, with the second day action being played at the Air Base on the Wrenwoods Course. Entry fee is $20, which includes practice ball prior to each round. Greens fee and cart are additional for each round. Play begins at 8:30 a.m., each day. Honoring our "Little Heroes" Tuesday, Oct. 10 - 6 p.m. This month, JB Charleston wants to acknowledge our military children ages 4-12 at a “Little Heroes Ceremony.” These are children of parents who have recently deployed. This wonderful ceremony honors the service, sacrifices and strength of character of these little patriots. They endure separations and long work hours while knowing that their parents are serving their country and making it a better place for them. The “Little Heroes Ceremony” is our way to say thank you for that sacrifice. Each child will be presented a medallion with a C-17 imprinted on it, along with a certificate signed by the parent’s respective wing commander. TAE KWON DO CLASS

Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., at the Air Base Youth Center for youth ages 7-17. Cost is $55 per month. All youth are required to have a current physical and up-to-date immunizations before starting class. Call or stop by for more details. Classes start this month.
