Boat orientation class necessity before using power boasts These one-hour orientation classes on Sept. 13 and Sept. 27 are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Participants need only attend one of the sessions. Before

Beach sweep volunteers needed Sept. 18
Get in some volunteer service hours cleaning the beach at Isle of Palms! We will walk about three miles picking up trash and creating a clear path for the turtles to return to the ocean from nesting in the dunes. After the clean-up, we’ll jump in the ocean to cool down then head off to dinner overlooking the beach. Dinner at own cost. Experience historic Magnolia Gardens to the fullest with tours of the grounds, house and garden, ending the evening on a catamaran tour down Shem Creek. (Cash bar on catamaran only). $30. Spend the weekend riding the torrential rapids of the Nolichucky Gorge, and hiking the Appalachian Trail while sleeping in cabins 30 feet from the rushing river one night & on the river side with your rafts the next! $100. All gear, transportation, guides, four delicious meals, & all activities included. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck 4:30 p.m., Friday and returns Sunday around 11 p.m. Tandem skydiving - Sept. 10 & 18. Walterboro, S.C. Jump out of a perfectly good airplane and fly like an eagle. The $100 cost covers transportation, instruction and jump. Bring money for dinner. Trip leaves the Bowman quarterdeck at 7:15 a.m., and returns around 6 p.m. Horseback riding - Sept. 10. Seabrook Island, S.C. Join the Air Base Outdoor Rec Center for a trail ride on Seabrook Island. Ride lasts about 1 ½ hour and meanders through scenic woods, marshes and tidal creeks. Must be at least 12 years old and under 240 lbs. Closed toe shoes required. $25 (RecOn) $95 (reg. price) Departs the Air Base ORC at 9:30 a.m., and returns around 1 p.m. Wild Blue Ropes/Angel Oak Adventure - Sept. 16. James Island, S.C. Explore the largest high ropes course on the East Coast with 72 different obstacles 30 feet in the air, including their very own, Ninja Warrior course. $25. Price includes transportation, two hours of climbing and dinner! Trip departs from the Bowman quarterdeck at 5 p.m., and returns at approximately 10 p.m. Jekyll Island Biking - Sept. 17– Jekyll Island, Ga. Enjoy biking the Island of Jekyll while learning about the history of the Island as we stop off to historic landmarks, visit the turtle rehabilitation center and visit the neighboring Island, St. Simons. The $30 price includes transportation (TV on van), Island entrance, bike rentals, guided tour (or map for your own tour), turtle rehab center tour and lunch. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 7 a.m., returning around 11 p.m. Beach volunteer - Sept. 18. Isle of Palms Beach, S.C. Get in some volunteer service hours cleaning the beach! We will walk about three miles picking up trash and creating a clear path for the turtles to return to the ocean from nesting in the dunes. After the clean-up, we’ll jump in the ocean to cool down then head off to dinner overlooking the beach. Dinner at own cost. Departs the Bowman quarterdeck at 1:30 p.m., returning at approximately 9 p.m. Shrimping Program - Sept. 19-21. Local waters. You will learn how to make bait balls, put marker poles down and use a cast net to catch shrimp during shrimp baiting season. Plus, you can bring home fresh shrimp. $20. Gymnastics/Parkour - Sept. 23– Summerville, S.C. - Come spend three hourss in a private LIBERTY/SAI gym sessions where you can set up your own parkour course or work on your gymnastic skills on the bars, beams, foam pit, trampoline track, spring floors, & more! Enrollment for before and after school program continues Registration continues for the JB Charleston Before and After School Care program. Cost per child is based on total family income. In many cases, transportation is provided to and from a local school. This benefit may vary depending on the number of children enrolled in the program. SMART Girls host lock-in
JB Charleston's S.M.A.R.T. Girls group is hosting a all-girls lock-in at the Air Base Youth Center Friday, Sept. 23. As part of the Boys and Girls Club of America, S.M.A.R.T. Girls is a program for ages 8-17 that is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable young girls to develop to their full potential. The lock-in will be from Friday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday. There will be food, snacks and refreshment throughout the evening. Cost is $10 for Youth Center members and $15 for nonmembers.
