Charleston is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. But, you don’t have to pay tourist prices for tickets and attractions. These one-hour orientation classes are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Before attending class, boater must take and pass a free on-line boater safety course at www.boatus.org. Call the Air Base ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.

The Air Base ORC offers an indoor and mobile climbing wall. The indoor wall is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Climbers need to weigh a minimum of 50 lbs. in order to climb on the auto-belay wall. Cost is $6 for first-time users; $5 for every subsequent climbing session. The mobile climbing wall is available by reservation for large events or parties on and off base. Price varies, depending on dates/ times needed and number of climbers. Stop by or call for more details.

We have campers, tents, cooking gear, several sizes of ice chests, back packs and inflatable sleep mattresses. Shark Fishing: Sept. 5 & 12. Charleston. Come join us on these exciting shark fishing trips inside the Charleston harbor. $40. Trip includes bait, tackle and instruction. BYO beverages and food. Trip leaves from the Leeds Avenue landing at 9 a.m., returning around 2 p.m. Must be at least 13 years old and have a valid S.C., Saltwater fishing license.
Tandem Skydiving: Sept. 8. Walterboro, S.C. Jump out of a plane because your mother told you not to! The $100 price includes transportation, tandem sky dive and instruction. Must be at least 18 years old and weigh absolutely no more than 220 lbs. The trip departs from The Dive on the Weapons Station at 7:15 a.m., returning at approximately 6 p.m. All meals at your own cost. Hunting Island Hiking: Sept. 8. Hunting Island State Park, S.C. Enjoy a relaxed island hike along with touring Hunting Island’s lighthouse all the way to the top for a great view to overlook the island. $15. Price includes transportation, hiking guide, map if you wish to explore alone, island fee, beach toys, lunch and the lighthouse tour admission. Departs The Dive parking lot at 9 a.m., returning at approximately 8 p.m. Raccoon Island Kayaking: Sept. 8. Edisto Island, S.C. Join us for this kayaking trip to Raccoon Island near Edisto. We will hopefully see some interesting wildlife to include dolphins, shrimp, crabs and deer. After kayaking we will have lunch and then go to Botany Bay for an awesome hike along the beach. $30. Departs for the Air Base ORC at 9 a.m. Dorm Cornhole Tournament: Sept. 9. Air Base dorms. - Join SAI for a dorm cornhole tournament. Prizes awarded to the top teams. $10 per team. For more information please contact SAI Coordinator Stefan Drafahl at 843-963-1672. Archery Tag Tournament: Sept. 15. Bowman Center, Weapons Station. Archery Tag is a new game sweeping the nation. Think dodgeball but with arrows. Teams of five can sign up or you can sign up individually and we will assign you a team before the tournament. Prizes awarded to top finishers! Free. Starts at 10 a.m. Horseback Ride/Rock Climbing: Sept. 15. Seabrook Island, S.C. Join us on a scenic ride on Seabrook Island. Ride lasts about one hour and meanders thru scenic woods, marshes and tidal creeks on Seabrook Island. Must be at least 12 years old and under 240 lbs. to ride. Closed toe shoes required. $40. Price includes transportation and horseback ride with guide. Trip departs from the Air Base ORC at 8 a.m., returning around 1 p.m. After returning from horseback riding, you can conquer the ORC’s indoor rock wall and enjoy some pizza. Jet Ski Safari: Sept. 16. Isle of Palms, S.C. Join LIBERTY/SAI on a wild ride on the Intercoastal Waterway and into the Barrier Islands off Charleston. This high speed adventure is a must. $40. (Active duty only) Price includes transportation, jet ski safari two-hour tour & guide. Departs the Air Base ORC at 7:45 a.m. and The Dive at 9:15 a.m. Trips return around 12 and 1 p.m., respectively. Charleston Harbor Cruise: Sept. 18. Charleston. This leisurely tour will cruise by some of Charleston’s most famous sites including Charleston Towne Landing, Ft. Sumter and the Citadel. $10. Price includes transportation and boat ride. Passengers may bring food and drink on board. Minimum age for trip is 10 years old. Departs the Air Base ORC at 4:30 p.m. Wild Blue Ropes (High Ropes Course): Sept. 21. Test your ninja skills on this 72-obstacle high ropes course where you’ll be hooked in and set free to roam any of the obstacles at your own pace. Try out our Ninja Warrior course we have set up as well and see if you can beat the course record! $15. Price includes: transportation, admission for two-hour climb, all equipment, instruction and dinner! Departs from The Dive on the Weapons Station at 5 p.m., returning around 10 p.m. Horseback Trail Ride: Sept. 22. Seabrook Island, S.C. Take a leisurely horseback ride through some luscious, deep wooded areas and along island marshes on this Seabrook Island excursion. $30. Departs from the Dive parking lot TBD. All riders must be at least 12 years old and weigh no more than 240 lbs. Beach Horseback Ride: Sept. 22. Seabrook Island, S.C. This is a scenic, relaxing horseback ride on the beautiful beaches of Seabrook Island. Trip is for inexperienced and experienced riders. $45. Departs from Air Base ORC at 8 a.m., returning around 2 p.m. All riders must be at least 12 years old and weigh no more than 240 lbs. Mt. Mitchell Camping Trip: Sept. 22-23. Mt. Mitchell State Park, N.C. Climb the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River on this two-day adventure. This 11-mile hike takes us up to the beautiful peak of Mt Mitchell. This is considered a strenuous hike so be prepared for a good workout. $50. Cost includes camping supplies, two meals and breathtaking views. Departs from Air Base ORC at 6 a.m., returning around 5 p.m. on Sept. 23. Culinary tour of Charleston: Sept. 23. Downtown Charleston. Come join us as we walk, talk and taste our way through Charleston. This 2½ hour tour will immerse you in the history and culture of the Lowcountry. Discover how our unique cuisine has evolved over the past 300+ years, while sampling delicious specialties from local eateries, markets, bakeries, restaurants, and culinary landmarks. $25 Price includes transportation, culinary foods and tour. Departs The Dive parking lot at 12 p.m., returning around 6 p.m. Biking Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms: Sept. 23. Sullivan’s Island & Isle of Palms, S.C. OCT. 20, ROUND 1 - REDBANK PLANTATION OCT. 21, ROUND 2 - WRENWOODS This exciting, two-day tournament is open to everyone with unrestricted access to Joint Base Charleston. Format for the championship is 36-hole, individual stroke play. First round will be on the Redbank Plantation course on the Weapons Station, with the second day action being played at the Air Base on the Wrenwoods Course. Entry fee is $25, which includes practice balls prior to each round, and awards lunch after second round. Greens fee and cart are additional for $29 each round. Play begins at 8 a.m., each day. Here is a great opportunity for a competitive tune-up to get ready for the base championship in October. The JB Charleston Golf Association is hosting this tournament at Redbank Plantation Golf Course on the Weapons Station. Start time is 7:30 a.m. Low gross and low net prizes given out using established GHIN handicaps. Prizes are awarded based on participation, and players age group and gender. Entry fee is $20, plus greens fee and cart. Non-association members may play in three tournaments during the year prior to be required to join the association. Prior registration is needed to play in this tournament. Call Redbank Plantation Golf Course to sign-up or for more information.
