President’s Notes I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to serve on the ILCA-NA Executive Committee with Tracy Usher and Eric Faust over the last eight years. While I’m sad to see them leave, I’m confident that the Laser Class world-wide will be in excellent hands with Tracy and Eric in these key leadership positions.

As the interim chair, I plan to maintain the momentum and continuity we have worked so hard to build in the North American region. Our mission will continue to be to maintain excellence and enjoyment in Laser sailing, facilitate the production of great regattas, and support a strong Laser sailing community in North America. If there is anything we can do to improve your Laser sailing experience, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

My immediate focus as interim chair will be on the great sailing season we have ahead of us. All of the regattas are on the calendar, the NORs are posted (or will be soon), and our hosting clubs are ready to offer you a stellar racing experience, with great competition and camaraderie unparal

Going for Gold - our North American Laser & R Danielle Dube

How long have you been sailing in the Laser Radial? Since 2005 when I had to switch from a Byte to a Radial for the Youth Worlds in Korea What has been your training heading to Weymouth ? Lots of training camps at home and in Weymouth with the other Canadian Sailing Team girls, as well as lots of time spent in the gym, in the pool, and on a bike. I’ve also had a busy regatta season this year.. its been pretty full-on for several months now. What other boats have you been racing in this year? Did you consider this cross-training and/or what benefit did you derive from that? I have a J22 at home but I’ve been away so much sailing Radials that its not even in the water yet and won’t be until August. So I can’t say I’ve really cross trained on anything this year.

Probably a total of 3 weeks. Besides the sailing, what are you looking forward to in England? I used to be a Synchronized swimmer and if I’m able to, I’d like to go and watch some of that after I’m done competing... Its one of several sports that I’d like to see. I’d also like to do touristy things around London (like see Big Ben) and maybe even see my family when they are there. What are your plans September 1, 2012? I’ll probably go back to University and coach sailing a bit on the side.

How many days have you spent at home this year? 12

How long have you been sailing in the Laser Standard?

My dad had a Laser when I was born and I used to sail with him on it as a child. My parents bought me my first laser in 1995.

Somewhere around 30 or 40. I generally get about ten days per month at home which is important for me to maintain my training.

I have been sailing most of the World Cup events and the World Championship. I also to plenty of practice in between the events both at my home in Toronto and in the Olympic venue in Weymouth England.

My sister and her husband live in England and they have a 1 year old son. It is going to by nice to have the whole family supporting me at the big event.

What has been your training heading to Weymouth?

What other boats have you been racing in this year? Did you consider this cross-training and/or what benefit did you derive from that?

I did a Melges 24 regatta with Richard Reid and his Zingara team. I also did a few Star regattas last year with my good friend Roger Cheer. They are all fun and keep things fresh for me. How many days have you spent at home this year? www.Laser.org

Besides the sailing, what are you looking forward to in England?

What are your plans September 1, 2012?

I’ve decided not to worry about that too much until after the games. Laser sailing has been a great challenge but I will have to see what options are available to me. I may try a different Olympic class or follow and entire new career path. I do quite a lot of coaching and hope to be able to do more of that in the fall.

Going for Gold - our North American Laser & R Paige Railey

How long have you been sailing in the Laser Radial? I started sailing laser radials at the age of 13, but I got serious in them when I turned 15. I was really young when I made the decision to campaign full time, but I didn’t let what anyone said or did hold me back. What has been your training heading to Weymouth? A LOT! I alternate between 2-3 sessions a day. Meaning I go to the gym twice, one cardio session and one weight session, and hit the water for a minimum of 3 hours. What other boats have you been racing in this year? Did you consider this cross-training and/or what benefit did you derive from that? I actually haven’t sailed any other boats this year. We have been mainly focused on improving my radial sailing/strategy/tactics. In 2009 I sail the f-16 and f-18. I loved the boats and they taught me a lot about angles and broaden my horizons and knowledge on down14

winds. I think it is very beneficial to sail other boats because it teaches you different aspects of sailing which in turn makes you a more diverse/knowledgeable sailor. How many days have you spent at home this year? This is a great one…I believe being in Florida from January 14 until the end of the Olympics will be a total of a month. Besides the sailing, what are you looking forward to in England? I am looking forward to the opening ceremony. I am very proud to represent the United States of America, sailing team, sponsors, family, friends, yacht club and myself. I can’t wait to walk into the stadium with my brother, see all the flashing lights, people, and smiles on everyone’s face. I’m going ot walk in and give a HUGE hoot and holler and scream, “We did it Zach! We finally made it together, now heres our chance to show the world what the Railey Family is all about!”

What are your plans September 1, 2012? I’m going to start training for a half ironman and get my brother motivated to loose weight so we can sail together! Imagine that…..

How long have you been sailing in the Laser Standard

How many days have you spent at home this year?

I started sailing laser at 13 after sizing out of the Optimist; First the radial and then later the full rig. I am 26 now.

I have spent just a little over 5 weeks at home since November 1st, 2011

What has been your training heading to Weymouth? I have sailed in many of the World cup events. Usually I get a week or two of training in at each venue before the event. In addition to the numerous regattas I have spent a lot of time training in Weymouth. What other boats have you been racing in this year? Did you consider this cross-training and/or what benefit did you derive from that? I have raced mostly in the Laser. I have had the opportunity to sail on are a TP 52 (Decision) where I called tactics. I also skippered a Lightning one regatta. It is always beneficial to get time on another boat. It helps to gain perspective. The most important sailing is that that I have done in the laser.

www.Laser.org

Besides the sailing, what are you looking forward to in England? The whole Olympic experience will be amazing. I hope to meet some of the other athletes and take in a few events. What are your plans September 1, 2012? As of now they are still up in the air.

Clay Johnson Wins ACCs LUKE MILLER The 2012 ACC’s started for me when I left school on Thursday, May 17th, headed for Boston. The next morning I woke up to the sunrise over the Charles River on a beautiful New England spring morning. My host family for the event, the Marshalls, set me up with a great house and a boat in Marblehead, which we drove to that morning. I felt calm when I arrived to Eastern Yacht Club and ready for the next few days of sailing. Although the wind readings were light for the practice day, the thermals in the harbor tricked me into having hope of more wind. We ended up drifting for most of the day with the only source of wind coming from the harbor puffs and a course comprised of moorings. The breeze ended up fading out so I headed to my host’s house.```````` The next day I arrived to more people and even less wind at the race site. I was lucky enough that I didn’t spend my morning sticking twenty sail numbers on my sail and an Opti sail number would have to suffice, I was number 1 for the weekend. Besides being the laughing stock of the masters I saw a few faces that I recognized and took part in the sailor’s ritual of catching up on regatta day. In that group was Clay Johnson who convinced me to go to the event we waited about a half hour after harbor start for an unofficial postponement, which mostly consisted of listening to my pre-regatta playlist, “Get Psyched!!!” We launched and as the day before the group drifted, paddled, and rocked. The wind came in waves with the ominous flat spot just at the horizon screaming at you, “I won’t stay for long” We finished three races all at different times in those big waves of wind. My key asset that day was my boat speed because my starts were terrible in every race, coming around the top mark far from top ten. I managed to fight back to a 6th place in the first race after a start under the fleet at the pin, and a penalty turn at the mark. Disappointed with that result, I was eager to succeed in the next race. I my dismay, my wishes did not come true. I had a better mid-boat start but I was forced to the right side, which I had convinced my self was the favored side because of the dominant upwind current on the right side. But as all sailors have experienced, the other side came in and I rounded in the mid thirties. With a very focused downwind I basically caught the fleet rounding the bottom mark in top ten. By then the wind shut off and

16

we were in drift mode again. Five boats passed me painfully slowly on the “drag race” to the finish. Due to the lack of wind we didn’t get are last race off until about 5:00 in which we got a highest reading of about 5 knots. I still had a poor start at the pin but managed to find clear air after the first few boats tacked out. With my speed I tacked and joined the leading group again and finally got to concentrate on my speed and top fleet tactics. Our boats barely created the first bits of load on the foils and we started to accelerate which made it easier to sail. With no major tactical decisions I stayed around 7th throughout the whole race. Because of the fleet being generally inconsistent I ended up 4th after the day. Clay Johnson stood in first with a 1, 1, 1. Following with Matt Allen in second, Lucan Adams of Brown in third, Luke Muller (me) in fourth, and Ben Richardson in fifth. The Radials only finished two races with Phenix Cloutier Beaudoin from Quebec in the lead. Though unhappy with the day’s results, I had to let it go and immerse myself into the beautiful landscape. The rocks and leaves reminded me of my trip to Sweden back in my Opti days. I suddenly missed traveling but I was happy to be in such a great venue. With the long day behind me I was very tired and after eating dinner I went straight to bed. On the second day, I woke up to the same forecast and at that that point I was just happy to be where I was. I tried a different approach of staying calm and focused, telling myself that I would work for every last boat in order to make up the point gap that was made the day before. The land felt hotter in the morning and there were more clouds than the day before so we all prayed for a early afternoon sea breeze. Yet again we were wrong. The only thing I remember about our way out to the course was the constant melody of seagulls, the crash of waves against Marblehead rock, and the ringing of the close-by gong channel marker. The first race, I again had difficulty starting—an issue I found throughout the event. I rounded the top mark in mid-twenties. On the second upwind a nice welcoming puff helped me pass about five boats. With five more on the down-wind I finished around

tenth. I felt quite tense at the end of the race knowing that that result wasn’t good enough but I knew releasing that stress probably would have resulted in a rule 42 flag. After that race we sat around for the next few hours placing fake bets on whether or not we would get a second race in. Looking out at the dwindling daylight and the glassy water, my bet was no. But to my surprise and delight, I was wrong. With about 15 minutes remaining in the possible start times the radials rebelled with an attempt to force the general recall with 40% of the fleet over but to no success. The race committee was eager and started us as far behind the radials as possible, which was about three minutes. I finally decided that I would get a good start in the regatta and I started at the slightly unflavored boat. With a good start and a clear lane for speed I quickly separated myself from the fleet. I took in the first shift out right then crossed the fleet to round in second after Clay played some professional top-of-the-course moves. This time I used much simpler tactics in the top-group and stayed in top three even after flipping at the second bottom mark. I finished with a third, which wasn’t good enough for my goal of top three. At the end of the day Clay Johnson took it home winning every race, Matt Allen and Lucas Adams tied with 29 points and Ryan Schmitz of Boston College recovered from a bad race the first day after some killer scores to tie with me with 41 points. Phenix won the radials, with Gary Prieto in second, and Hugh Macrae in third. Even though the wind was lacking I think the race officials did a phenomenal job with what they had to work with. I had a great experience and met a lot of cool people. All I know is that I am going to be going back to Marblehead soon. Orange Coffee Pot Regatta CLAY JOHNSON

NEW CK CLEAT Performance cleating

June 2, 2012

Every year, sailors from all over the east coast drive to Surf City, NJ, in early June for the annual Jack Elfman Orange Coffee Pot Regatta. This event is the longest running Laser regatta in the United States, with a perpetual trophy—an actual orange coffee pot—that goes back to 1972.

This year, forty boats descended on Surf City Yacht Club on June 2nd to sail for the coveted Orange Coffee Pot. We were met with temperatures in the low 70s, winds ranging from 6-16 knots, and a shifty westerly breeze that made racing tricky for all.

Drew Lorenz showed that top young sailors can jump into the 4.7 and have success quickly by winning his division. Kelly McGlynn exerted her dominance in the radial fleet by winning every race. And I was able to hold off Kyle Rogachenko and a handful of other talented guys in a deep full-rig fleet.

for Control Lines Keeper allows rope to run free when uncleated. Cage allows rope to be cleated o up to 70 . Positive click when rope is cleated. 27mm (11/16”) hole centres, easy to retrofit. R.R.P £17.99 or less, complete. Cleat from an angle.

I was thinking about three things that helped me at the regatta:

The wind was very puffy: sometimes I was in puffs in the mid-tohigh teens and other times I found lulls that were as low as five or six knots. Downwind, I thought it was really important to look back and try to set myself up for the next puff. When I did get the puff, I tried to point my bow straight at the mark and milk it as long as I could. But if I noticed my puff was almost gone, I quickly looked for the next one and sailed over to it. It was definitely a “cross them when you can” kind of day. Most of the time, it paid to lead the group to the next shift, but a few times, there were big winding puffs that lasted for an entire leg. If I was ever down (in a light spot or a header), I always looked over my shoulder to see if I could cross the guys on my hip and re-position myself for the next puff. Watching the fleet ahead of us was also a big tell-tale sign as far as what to expect. Changing controls was huge on Saturday. With the wind ranging more than 10 knots at times, I was constantly adjusting my sail and tweaking my controls.

But besides the great sailing, what makes the Orange Coffee Pot so appealing?

Efficiency. Even though this event is a one-day regatta, the Race Committee was able to bang off seven quality races in tricky conditions. Each race was a twice around windward-leeward course and took just less than half an hour. We got plenty of racing in! Great Hospitality. Veteran regatta organizer, Newt Wattis, ensures that everything runs smoothly; from the friendly volunteers, to the amenable RC who will run races the way the sailors suggest, to the delicious food and drink after the race, thing went off without a hitch. The Awards. Great awards were provided from gift certificates to sailing parts. What made the awards cool was that not only did everyone get an award, but they were also given out in reverse order with the guys lower in the fleet getting first dibs at what they wanted. It was pretty cool!

This event is definitely a “must-attend” if you are in the area. It’s already on the calendar for next year, scheduled for June 1, 2013. Be there!

District 8 Championships TED CREMER

DISTRICT 8 SECRETARY Sayville YC, Saturday/Sunday, June 9/10

Sayville Yacht Club once again hosted the annual District 8 Grand prix and contrary to tradition, it was a light air regatta! Friday night we welcomed back our good friend District 11 Secretary Jon Deutsch and the club set up a bonfire to welcome him back to town. Kudo’s to Jon for this great shot! In all 8 races were completed over the two days and PRO George Becza did a fine job keeping the course square despite some rather dramatic shifts. The breeze was mostly easterly . . . we live on a SW seabreeze here, so a lot of mark moving was needed over the weekend. The tricky and fluky conditions ended up being to Ryan Schmitz’s liking. Could it be all that Charles River sailing that Ryan is doing at Boston College is starting to pay off? Ryan sailed a perfect regatta dropping a first. I had asked him what he had learned at BC this year “Sail faster than everyone and make high percentage decisions”. Ryan had clean starts and essentially sailed all the shifts up the middle of the course and had great downwind speed. Ryan won last year’s regatta so he is our only back to back winner we have had in recent history. Perhaps the most interesting part of the regatta was how close second through fifth was. Past D8 Secretary Lindsay Hewitt and current D11 secretary Jon Deutsch sailed a statistically even regatta with the tie break being determined by who beat who in the last race! Lindsay’s 3rd in Race 8 was the deciding factor. Jon gets the repeat third as he finished 3rd in 2011! The same applied to 4th and 5th where it came down to Geoff Loffredo’s 2nd place finish in Race 8 to just pass Brian Raney who finished 5th, The radial fleet was dominated by LISOT sailor Roger Dorr who also sailed a near perfect regatta dropping a 2nd. Sayville Yacht Club’s Kia Olsson was the top female sailor of the event and she finished second, just ahead of Shelter Island’s Sydney Mandelbaum. Special thanks to Sayville’s Aiden Campbell for racing on Sunday so we could get the needed number of radials so the fleet could qualify for grand prix points. In all a great event, and congrats to the winners! The Master’s ACC’s is scheduled at Sayville for July 7-8th and that will certainly be a great event! Hoping for the SW Sea breeze and you can count on Blue Point White IPA on tap, some acoustic music on the deck, and an awesome barbeque! Please make the trip . . . You won’t regret it! Reineke Wins U21 Laser Radial World Championships First day of the 2012 Laser Radial World Championship brought America’s Reineke Erika on top of the fleet standings. The US sailor was outstanding on the Boltenhagen waters in Germany and with some impressive sailing skills she was able to grab the leading spot in the event. The second day brought some ideal wind conditions over the racing area and the participants were able to complete the scheduled races on time.

Reineke earned 81 points after completing six races including a discard. She began the regatta with a 25th finish in the opening race which seemed very poor start. However, she bounced back brilliantly in the second race and hit a fifth podium place in the second race to move up in the standings. Another 25th finish in the third race

troubled her standing position but she continued to work hard and overcome her weaknesses in during the regatta which paid her back in the end. The American sailor took 12thplace in the fourth race to clinch the top podium place in the overall standings.

Reineke was in a strong position in the fleet and was aiming to retain the top place among the Laser Radial participants. However, the fifth race did not go according to the expectations and she again finished on number 25 but this finish did not affect the overall results.

District Reports District 3 Toronto Nigel Heath

We have recently undergone a change of management within District 3, as I have taken over as the D3 secretary for Rob Koci, who has retired from the role. I have to thank Rob for his dedication to the laser class here in Ontario and beyond. His energy and ideas are an inspiration to all masters sailors. I don’t have time to list all the things he did for the district (trust me he did a lot), but creating the Ontario Masters Sailing Team and arranging top level coaching as we prepared for major regattas has to be among his greatest achievements.

Having won the Canadian Masters Championships and US Masters Championships last year, it is terrible to see good talent go to waste, but unfortunately Rob’s bad back has kept him out of the laser since last year.

I am happy to confirm that the Fogh Gold Cup series will continue this year, with Fogh Marine providing the best prizes in North America, a new sail for the winner of the Laser fleet, a sail for the winner of the Radial fleet and a third sail that will rotate each year between the top female (in Radial fleet), the top junior (Radial fleet) and the top master (Laser fleet). In 2011 the third sail was awarded to the top female, so in 2012 it will be awarded to the top junior sailor. Next time you are at Fogh Marine picking up supplies, but sure to thank Morten for the great prizes. District 3 will also be providing Fogh Marine gift certificates to the runners up. As a reminder, you must be a Laser Class member to win one of these prizes, so sign-up or renew your membership now at nalaser.org.

District 3 is looking for help in running the various functions that go on behind the scenes. Contact me if interested and visit the D3 website for the regatta schedule and all the info about the district at d3laser.com. Sail it flat

District 6 Vancouver, BC Andy Hunt

Greetings to all District 6 Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 sailors. Since my last report in the Spring edition of The Laser Sailor, lots of sailing and racing has been happening in District 6. The spring regatta schedule really started to pick up with the Flights of Spring Regatta. The Jericho Laser Fleet hosted the regatta at the Jericho Sailing Centre on April 21 and 22. Winds were moderate and thanks to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s race team, there were 8 Lasers and 11 Laser Radials. There were three races on Saturday and four races on Sunday. The top four Laser Radial sailors were: Natalia Montemayor, RVANCY, 10.00; Alexander Fritz, RVANYC, 13.00; Fillah Karim, WVYC, 24.00; Miranda MacGillvray, RVANYC, 31.00. The top three Laser sailors were: Andriy Kanyuak, VSC, 13.00; Peter Woytkowiak, JSCA, 14.00; Jacek Suski, JSCA, 16.00. The complete results can be found at: (www.jsca.bc.ca/racing). The next regatta was hosted by the Royal Vancouver

24

Yacht Club on April 28 and 29. Winds were very light on Saturday, so much so that there was no racing. On Sunday, winds were light but enough to get four races. There were 20 Lasers and 24 Laser Radials. Sailors came from all over BC and Washington State. This regatta was called the Kitten Cup and is the first regatta of the BC Sailing / Helly-Hansen Youth Circuit. The top five Laser sailors were: Bob Britten, RVICYC, 16.00; Dominic Fritz, RVANYC, 16.00; Thomas Roehrl, RVANYC, 22.00; Tony Martin, JSCA, 24.00; Sebastian Fritz, RVANYC, 28.00. The top six Laser Radial sailors were: Natalia Montemayor, RVANYC, 12.00; Fillah Karim, NSST, 21.00; James Bone, RVANYC, 25.00; Reese Myerscough, RVICYC, 29.00; Rebecca Power, RVANYC, 34.00; David Brink, SYC, 36.00. The top six Laser Radial sailors were: Natalia Montemayor, RVANYC, 12.00; Fillah Karim, WVYC, 21.00; James Bone, RVANYC, 25.00; Reese Myerscough, RVICYC, 29.00; Rebecca Power, RVANYC/RNSYS, 34.00; David Brink, SYC, 36.00. There were no Laser 4.7s sailing. Complete results can be found at: www.royalvan.com (under previous events). The next regatta on the District 6 schedule and the next regatta on the Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing Youth Circuit was the Spring Dinghy Championships. This regatta was held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and was on May 5 and 6. If memory serves, winds were fine and there were enough races to have a throwout race. As I am typing this report, the website for the Royal Victoria Yacht Club is unavailable so I cannot report on the results. If you are interested, please go to: www.rvyc.bc.ca. Although I did not manage to go to Kelowna for the Springtime Regatta, I checked the results on their website. The Springtime Regatta is hosted by the Central Okanagan Sailing Association and was on May 19 and 20. Seven races were completed which meant that there was a throwout race. The Laser 4.7s (2) showed up for this regatta. It seems as though the Laser 4.7s are not that popular in District 6 as they don’t show up for a lot of regattas. I think that a lot of Laser sailors and their families have Optimists or Laser Radials instead. There were 17 Laser Radials and 15 Lasers at the Springtime Regatta. Sailors came from all over as is usually the case with the youth events. The top two Laser 4.7 sailors were Thish Rajapakshe (5) and Zoe Roberts (10), both from the host club. The top four Laser Radial sailors were: Fillah Karim, WVYC, 11.00; Alex Fritz, RVANYC, 29.00; Miranda MacGillvray, RVANYC, 31.00; Natalia Montemayor, RVANYC, 35.00. The top five Laser sailors were: Dominic Fritz, RVANYC, 14.00; Max Gallant, RVICYC, 16.00; Adrian Vlasic, RVANYC, 18.00; Trevor Owen, KSA, 23.00; Chris Wilson, NSST, 33.00. I am grateful that the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s race team, led by their two coaches, Al Clark and Chris Cowan, continue to travel to regattas. Without their contribution, regattas would not nearly be as successful. The next regatta was the Big Brothers Regatta. This regatta was held at the Cultus Lake Sailing Club and was organized by Chris Carberry. For whatever reason, only one Laser sailor and no Laser Radial or Laser 4.7 sailors. The winds were very light on both days when the racing was scheduled to occur. Unfortunately, the winds showed up on Saturday after most of the boats were put away and racing was over for the day. The lone Laser sailor, Tony

Martin, only stayed for one day and therefore I have no results to report. This regatta was on May 26 and 27. The following weekend, June 2 and 3, there were two conflicting regattas. One was the Sockeye Cup, which is new to the Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing Youth Circuit and the other was the Jericho Classic. There were lots of Radial sailors (18) and not a lot of Laser sailors (6) at the Sockeye Cup. It looks like it was another low wind weekend at Cultus Lake as there were only four races for each fleet. The top five Laser Radial sailors were: Graham Harney, 4.00; Fillah Karim, 7.00; Miranda MacGillvray, 8.00; Alexander Kroitzch, 11.00; Ellie Shaw Unger, 13.00. For the Lasers, the top three sailors were: Adrian Vlasic, 3.00; Chris Wilson, 6.00 and Thomas Hardy, 9.00. I would be remiss if I did not mention Myles Hagen. Myles is a Laser 4.7 sailor who was the only 4.7 sailor at the Sockeye Cup but he competed in two races. Good for him. The Jericho Classic was hosted by the Jericho Sailing Centre and had a mixed fleet of Lasers (8) and Laser Radials (2). One of the Lasers and one of the Laser Radials sailed only one day. The winds were all over the place and the race committee committed several errors for which I, as head race officer, apologize. There were 8 races in total. All of the sailors with the exception of Mark Fitzsimmons (SSC), were local Jericho sailors. The top four sailors were: Andriy Kanyuka, 15.00; Peter Woytkowiak, 18.00; Tony Martin, 21.00; Sascha Smutny, 24.00. Since The Laser Sailor won’t be available until mid to late July, the only summer regatta that I would like to mention is the 2012 Canadian Laser Master Championships. This regatta is being hosted by the Jericho Laser Fleet and the Jericho Sailing Chentre. The regatta will be on August 4 – 6, 2012. It looks like there will be between 20 and 25 competitors. Now that I have finished with the regattas, I would like to remind everyone that the local clubs are having weekend and weeknight racing programs. These programs are an excellent way to get introduced into fleet racing. I would encourage all sailors to check out what their local clubs have to offer. Since Glenmore Sailboats left Vancouver, some of the slack has been taken up by Blast Sailing. Blast Sailing is selling a lot of the gear that Glenmore used to sell. Please check out Blast Sailing at: www.blastsailing.com. I hope that all sailors have a good summer and I hope that the winds will improve. Also, I would like to thank Bob Britten for maintaining the District 6 website (www.district6x.ca)

District 7 Derek Stow Tiverton, RI

In my first report as the new Laser District 7 Secretary, let me express my thanks on behalf of all sailors in the district to Kim Ferguson for her sterling work as D7 secretary for the last three years. We especially appreciate the way she has continued to perform the role in the last year as her husband Scott’s work for the Oracle Racing America’s Cup team took them away from New England for much of the time. Best wishes to them both in their relocation to the West Coast.

SUMMER 2012

SummerLaser2012_Spring 05 7/10/2012 11:31 AM Page 25

The 2012 regatta season started off with a bang as the Newport Fleet closed out their frostbite season with the Peter Milnes Regatta on April 29. “One for the ages,” according to Moose McClintock (but he was on race committee.) “Really horrendous,” according to one of the sailors who regretted not sailing it in a Radial and who went swimming three times. There were 30 knot gusts. There were huge shifts. There were too many capsizes to count. 40 sailors entered but the fleet had dwindled to only a little more than half that number by the time of the last race. Congratulations to those who stuck it out to the end and mastered the conditions…

The top 5 were 1. Peter Shope 2. Steve Kirkpatrick 3. Lucas Adams 4. Peter Follansbee 5. Ted Hood

Conditions were a little more mellow for the two regattas the next weekend. At the May Madness Regatta at Quannapowitt YC in Wakefield MA on May 5, 14 sailors enjoyed 8 races in northerly winds of 3 knots veering to an easterly of 6 knots.

Results... 1. Peter Seidenberg 2. Stu Nickerson 3. Chris Hufstader 4. Gary Orkney 5. Mike McCaffrey

The second half of the weekend “double-header” on May 6, the New Hampshire Sea Coast Spring Regatta, was hosted by the Great Bay Yacht Club. 11 boats sailed 6 races in winds that went from east to south and from 3 knots to 10.

Results 1. Peter Follansbee 2. David Frazier 3. Hank Thorburn 4. Stu Nickerson 5. Peter Seidenberg

Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport CT held their Spring Regatta on May 12, and this was also the Area B Semifinals for the US Sailing Singlehanded Championships. The regatta took place in sunny weather and a SW wind of 6-14 knots with 10 Radials and 28 Standard Rigs racing. Standard Rigs 1. Colin Kennedy 2. Marc Jacobi 3. Glenn Dickson 4. Peter Seidenberg 5. Mike Mattan

Radials 1. Jay Lurie 2. Megan Spurling Marsh 3. Sara Hatsell 4. Emma Davis 5. Richie Gordon

Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead MA was the home of the 2012 Laser Atlantic Coast Championship on the weekend of May 19-20. Peter Seidenberg sent me this report on the day after the

www.Laser.org

regatta. Sailing was barely kept alive by a SSE sea breeze of 0-5 knots. But we had to wait for it on both days, before the first race and between subsequent ones. The RC was very patient and determined, keeping us out on Saturday until 6:30 to get 3 races in, and starting the second and last race on Sunday at exactly the deadline of 3:30 which turned out to be the race with the best wind all weekend. We had a great dinner at the Eastern Y.C. on Saturday and wonderful clam chowder for the road on Sunday. The slightly better wind (when it blew) on Sunday helped me to my best finishes of two 5th. I’m now suffering from muscle aches in my thighs because of all that crouching. Still, I’m happy I went - all the waiting for wind on shore and on the water, as well as the dinner, gave all of us the chance for socializing. And what better place to be on a sunny weekend than on the water off the coast of Marblehead!

The top 5 in the 39 boat Radial Fleet were… 1.Phenix Cloutier Beaudoin 2. Gary Prieto 3. Hugh MacRae 4. Hannah Lynn 5. Marie-Pier Alary And in the 47 Standard Rig Fleet the winners were… 1. Clay Johnson 2. Matt Allen 3. Lucas Adams 4. Ryan Schmitz 5. Luke Muller And thanks to Hilary Carr for this report on the All Souls Hospice Regatta in Maine on May 20. The second annual All Souls Hospice Regatta took place on May 20th in Thomaston, ME setting out from the fleet’s gathering place at the sail loft home of Chris Biggart. It was a warm and balmy summer day without too much wind when 15 laser racers crossed the starting line. Five races were run, with Peter Clapp and his team, Jeff Dinse and his daughter, Amber, setting the courses. Trophies were awarded to the winners, Tom Jamieson of Belfast taking top honors. George Haselton of Rockport captured second place and Colin Gowland of Belfast took third place. Fourth and fifth places were taken by Mark and Mike Gaffney, respectively. Congratulations along with soups, chowders and sweets awaited the fleet, as well as a silent auction. We had one very enthusiastic female participant, who raced in the event last year. We anticipate the participation of students from the Rockland Apprenticeshop school sailing program in our next regatta. Details of upcoming regattas are on the schedule on the District 7 Website at www.laserdistrict7.com. There is also a District 7 blog at http://laserd7.wordpress.com and a Laser District 7 Facebook page which is handy for keeping folk informed of upcoming events and for those “Who wants to sail this Tuesday evening?” type of discussions. You can contact me about any district matters at laserd7@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Summer District sailors!!! Please look for an

additional write up on the D-8 Grand prix that was held on June 9-10th at Sayville YC in this edition. Kudos My sincerest thanks to Marianne Nash for running such a great winter sailing series. Her dedication to Seawankha’s winter program is evident by the clear success of the series. I also need to recognize David Trinder for his commitment to keeping all the scores in order, and for getting the newsletters pushed out to the distinct. I also want to recognize Lindsay for his continued dedication to the sport , , , the kids he has influenced have moved on to be successful on a regional and international level. Lindsay’s personal sailing successes are impressive, but I get the sense he appreciates Kia Olsson’s success this season at deeper level. I have seen Lindsay leading in a race, only to peel off and work with a fellow competitor to help them improve. His leadership qualities make him one of the most admired people in the class. Eric Johnson also deserves a shout out for his rules seminars and for sailing real well! 7 bullets one day, right!!!! Congratulations to Fred Abels! I was

pleased to see him sail so well this season and to come back “home” and support our series. On a personal note, it means a lot to me as I’ve known him since my sunfish days even. I tend to see Fred more at places like Wrightsville Beach, or Mallets Bay Vermont. He is a great supporter of the regional and national regattas and even heads over to England to visit family and train. He is an exceptionally talented laser sailor and a friend to the district. In the past, Fred has supported many of my Sayville YC events, and I hope to see him at the Master ACC’s at Sayville weekend of July 7th and 8th. Final thanks to my faithful webmaster Bob Terry! My guess 100% attendance, and really fast in the light tricky stuff, all while capturing every moment on video! The website is beyond awesome and Bob really cares about the success of the district., Thanks and congratulations to all the sailors that came out this winter! THE MASTERS ACC’S AT SAYVILLE YC The Laser Masters ACC’s will be held at Sayville YC on July 7th and 8th. There will be on-line registration and you can get that link from the District 8 website or on Sayville YC’s site shortly. We look forward to having everyone come on out and race! Summer means sea breeze here on Long Island’s south shore…This will be FUN! SUMMER EAST END LASER SCHEDULE COMPLIMENTS OF MIKE DURAN AND LYNN SEXTON: Hello Laser racers! Back for the 7th summer season, we are pleased to announce the 2012 East End Series. Last year, 59 racers enjoyed 37 races during 7 regattas on Long Island’s East End. A shifty, on and off breeze - but don’t let anyone convince you that thare’s never any wind on the North shore! The breeze, about 10 kt most of the day, did catch most of us on the wrong side at one time or another. That is, all but Ryan Schmitz, who always seemed to know where to go. (His seventh place was when he decided to give his sister Becky a ride around the race course. He passed me anyway!) Thank you’s to Karen Doherty on Race Committee, and Chris and Becky Schmitz on mark boat. Another thank you to Lindsay Hewitt, who put the race together at the last minute. If you haven’t been getting e-mails in the past week, send me an e-mail at robertterry@optonline.net and I’ll get you on the list. The Results: Ryan Schmitz Lindsay Hewitt Matt Doherty Geoffrey Loffredo David Trinder Ed Beremblum Mark Feck Bob Terry Bob Blanco David Kruse Seawanhaka Spring Fling, Saturday, May 26 - Four racers showed up for this year’s season opener - lots of e-mail responses, but unfortunately, lots of scheduling conflicts, quite a few people sent “regrets.” That didn’t stop it from being a nice day out on the water, with sun, mild warmth, & water just cool enough to be refreshing. The 20 degree windshifts? Well, they hit us all & each of us had a chance to play “catch up” after picking the wrong side. The racing was so close (with Lindsay telling the leaders to do 360’s when they got too far ahead!) that we

wound up with a three-way points tie for First place! Kudos to the race committee for working out all the different levels of tie-breaking. It seems a three-way tie is a different order of magnitude over a two -way tie. Race results: Bob Terry Lindsay Hewitt Wyz Mooney Frank Seckler

District 9 New York Chas Williamson

Welcome to 2012 Sailors in D9! This season we have had four lovely regattas, two of which comprised enough wind for good action, but with incredible wind shifts - westerly winds blowing across North-South lakes !! Two other regattas provided very challenging racing in zephyr wind conditions ! Our four main regattas have been Ithaca, Newport YC (Rochester), Willowbank, and Saratoga Lake yacht clubs.

ITHACA YC - 26 May 2012

Our first regatta started in sunshine and zephyrs, and for three races we struggled. Chas Williamson managed to win the zephyr-fest races, with Chris Wilson tacking and gybing beautifully into second place, followed by Chippy Williamson in third position with a 3-6-6 placing, in the fleet of 15 boats. Skylar Munger (from Rochester) came fourth, followed by Pedro Bushnell and Dave Filiberto. Once we got ashore, Joe Miller and Christen Bonacci brought in the pizza and beer, to end a marvellous day on the water. Many thanks to Richard Stephens of the esteemed Weta fleet for running the regatta in the most beautiful and considerate manner, with helpers Jason Kahabka, Keith of the Wetas and team. The final places were: 1. Chas Williamson; 2. Chris Wilson; 3. Chippy Williamson; 4. Skylar Munger; 5. Pedro Bushnell; 6. Dave Filiberto; 7. Luke Miller; 8. Wes Britton; 9. AJ Murphy; 10. Steven Leach; 11. Tom Shaw; 12. Peter Britton; 13. Joe Miller of the Brothers; 14. Kenny Fourspring; 15. Clare Fewtrell. WILLOWBANK YC - 2 June 2012

Willowbank had a Westerly with huge windshifts, and moderate wind strength up to 10-15 knots. A surprisingly good fleet of 22 boats came to the start line, the biggest fleet for some time ! Doug Kaukeinea has just joined the Laser fleet from bigger boats, and sailed very consistently, winning three races! Ray Cudney of the host club put together a very fine series to take second place. AJ Murphy put it together well also to finish third, winning race 2. Brendan Cook was fourth, followed by a struggling Chas Williamson who mixed good bad, and sometimes ugly races. Dave Filiberto struggled uncharacteristically, and so he needs to practice more with me at Ithaca - Doctor’s orders. Thanks so much to Peter Bushnell for the awards, to be worn with pride over my pyjamas. The final places were: 1. Doug Kaukeinea; 2. Ray Cudney; 3. AJ Murphy; 4. Brendan Cook; 5. Chas Williamson; 6. Eric Magnusson; 7. Alex Steo; 8. Peter

Bushnell; 9. Lee Davis; 10. Thomas Shaw; 11. Skyler Munger; 12. Dan Lawless; 13. Peter Fleckenstein; 14. Campbell Woods; 15. Dicky Bird Mitchell. 16. Steve Leach; 17. Dave Filiberto; 18. Dave Whiteaway; 19. Mike Johnson; 20. Joe Miller of the Brothers; 21. Eduardo Solessio; 22. Mike Mueller. NEWPORT YC (Rochester, NY) - 9 June 2012

This year the regatta was held in light winds with huge windshifts owing to the Westerly prevailing winds blowing across Irondequoit Bay, and sometimes the wind even came from the North as the sea breeze from Lake Ontario tried to take over. Whatever wind blew, it never lasted throughout a complete race! Dan Lawless sailed very well in some close racing with place changing going on through each race. AJ Murphy continued his good form from Willowbank to take second place ahead of Chas Williamson, and Griffin Orr. Thanks to Kenny Fourspring for organising the event and to the Race Officer who was very kind to run the event for the sailors. The final places were: 1. Dan Lawless; 2. AJ Murphy; 3. Charley Williamson; 4. Griffin Orr; 5. Luke Miller; 6. Steve Leach; 7. Skyler Munger; 8. Kyle McGraw; 9. Kenny Fourspring; 10. Joe Miller; 11. John Boettcher; 12. David Maier; 13. Matthew Lawless. SARATOGA DERBY REGATTA - SLSC - 16 June 2012.

Allan Miller arranged a light wind on the wonderful sunny Saratoga Lake, which almost disappeared at times, and then he sailed beautifully well to take second place behind ex-NY Maritime hot sailor Dan Hesse. Chas Williamson was just behind, in a series of two very long races (90 minutes), where the places were surprisingly close. In the second race any one of three people would have won overall depending on which direction the final zephyr came in on the last run to the finish. Chas banked on the left side and of course the zephyr arrived from the right. Allan Miller ghosted across the finish line to lock up second ! Dave Nicol from Georgetown came in fourth, followed by Skyler Munger, who is competing very well this year. Past winner Mike Kitner came in 6th overall. This venue is one of the most beautiful ones of the year, and the club is someone’s country house. We are always treated extremely well by the hosts and especially by Al Miller - we love you Al ! The final places were: 1. Dan Hesse; 2. Allan Miller: 3. Chas Williamson; 4. David Nicol; 5. Skyler Munger; 6. Mike Kitner; 7. James Nicol; 8. Wes Britton; 9. Joe Miller of he Brothers; 10. Dave Burtis; 11. Lois Hagner; 12. Luke Miller; 13. Peter Britton; 14. Melissa Hatch-Tkal; 15. Peter Czajxezski.

Marsh Creek Sailing Club 31st Annual Philadelphia Sailing Championship for Lasers Tony Iacono

SUMMER 2012

SummerLaser2012_Spring 05 7/10/2012 11:31 AM Page 27

Twenty two Laser sailors eager to get the 2012 season off and running met at Marsh Creek in Downingtown PA Saturday morning April 14. 2012. Competitors came from D-10 Jersey and Pennsylvania, and D-11 Maryland and Delaware.

Marsh Creek has held the annual event for 31 years and this year it was sponsored by Annapolis Performance Sailing.

As Had Brick, who drove in from the Jersey Shore to race, said, he remembers back when a former local John Wright ran the event before his America’s Cup days with Dennis Conner. Of course most of the younger competitors did not have a clue. John MacClausland said he always likes to come to Marsh Creek, the District 10 season opener, and it is where he and his father sailed when he was a kid.

Marsh Creek sailors love having guests come to compete in our one design sailing events. The lake is beautiful year round and especially so in Spring. We really appreciate John’s annual attendance often after winning the Championship of Champions in the three regatta Florida Laser Masters circuit. He often cleans our clock as he did again this year with a winning score of 5 in the six races one throw out regatta.

Sun, warmth and a clean grassy launch area greeted sailors, but the lake was placid, when we arrived. After about a 15-minute delay and a continental breakfast, a light Easterly came in. By the Start it worked South and the eager fleet had two general recalls due to a heavily favored boat end which was the result of a breeze that kept rapidly moving right.

For the first start the wind settled into the forecasted WSW around 8 kts for Race 1 and built to 12 kts with occasional slightly higher puffs over the day.

Local Sunfish sailors Bill McLaughlin and Fred Glaiser, as RC ran windward / leeward courses and quickly adjusted the start line and marks as conditions warranted. They successfully started all races very quickly.

Local youth sailor Mike Rabbetts showed his stuff with a second place finish and top junior award. Had Brick scored 3rd which secured the top Grand Master award. Faye Flam started strong with 4th and 5th place finishes in the first two races and was the top Woman. George Lewis from Corsica River, MD was top Master and Randy Blough of Marsh Creek took home a nice bottle of Pinot Giorgio for his mid-fleet finish. In addition to the light breakfast before the start other niceties included; hoagies, salads and drinks after the races, free T-shirts and our Commodores wife Colleen

Attached are the results. Congratulations to Christian Hinkel for winning the 10 boat fleet.

Lavallette hosted their annual regatta the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. There were 15 + boats in all 3 fleets. First race was light but then picked up to a solid 15 with gusts for the last 4 races. Once again a great thanks to Dave Magno and LYC for running a great event!!

Top 5: Clay Johnson Glen Dickson Mike Russom Eric Reitinger Dave Magno

Thanks to Clay for writing the article about the Orange Coffee Pot that you see earlier in this issue.

- Island Heights hosted District 10 Championships this year (June 9-10) with 14 full rigs, 11 radials and 3 4.7s racing. Day 1 we had light wings out of the general westerly direction. This prompted the RC to race us in the Toms River around the area of the Toms River Yacht Club. This created some very trying conditions, making it tricky for the RC as well as the sailors. The wind was very puffy and shifty forcing you to keep your head out of the boat and be able to get to the next puff. Joe Paggi was able to stay consistent over the 5 race W/L 4 leg courses to lead day one by four points. Dinner was a nice BBQ after racing at the club. Day 2 we arrived to glass and warm temperatures. We waited a few hours for the seabreeze and around 11:30 we departed to the Wanamaker course on Barnegat Bay. The wind took a little time to lock into a south east direction at about 5-8mph. With the choppy conditions, keeping the boat moving was critical. 3 races were run (1 was a 4 leg W/L and the other 2 were 6 leg W/L), and in the full rigs, Eric Reitinger won all 3 races which clinched him the championship.

Our spring season has gotten off to a great start. Severn Sailing Association hosted their Sunshine Open regatta in April. Luke Shingledecker (SSA) put up mostly 1s and 2s to win the standard Rig fleet over Eric Reinke and David Schoene. The Radial fleet was led by Dorian Haldeman followed by Kim Couranz and Sandy Westphal.

At the beginning of May Corsica River Yacht Club hosted their inaugural Spring Regatta and had everything but wind. The 14 boats there were still able to get in 2 races in the Corsica River. Jacque Kerrest (PRSA) and Mike Schmidt (MRSA) traded bullets in the two races and tied for 1st, but Mike won the last race and thus the tiebreaker. With two 3s Nicholas Place (CRYC) was 3rd. SSA Held 12 races over two race days for their Spring Series with 22 boats taking part in the Standard rig fleet and 8 in the Radial.

SummerLaser2012_Spring 05 7/10/2012 11:32 AM Page 28

Matthew Schofield’s (SSA) consistent top 5 finishes in all of the races put him on top with Bob Tan (SSA) and Jerry Smith (SSA) finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the Radial fleet it was Phillip Schofield (SSA) over Ellen Thomas (SSA) and Kim Couranz (SSA).

Fishing Bay Yacht Club’s Spring Laser regatta saw 9 standard rigs and 6 radials. 5 races were sailed in a light to moderate breeze and Keith Davids won the day. James Jacob (FBYC) finshed 2nd and Brad Squires (FBYC) was 3rd. In the Radials it was Austin Powers (FBYC), Conrad Roos (FBYC) and Erin Jacobs (FBYC).

Six boats were out for West River Sailing Club’s Dave Irey Regatta. Roger Link (WRSC) was the overall winner.

Don’t forget our District Championship will be September 22-23 at Severn Sailing Association in their just-recently renovated clubhouse. Our Annual District meeting will be held at the event after dinner Saturday night. Please plan to be there for both the regatta and the meeting so we can talk about plans for organizing the district in the future.

As always, our schedule and the latest news are online at http://www.laserdistrict11.org

District 12 Carolinas, Georgia Butch Mumma

There seems to be a changing of the guard in District 12. For the past 8 plus years or so it has always been a master that has won our D-12 championship regattas. But the winds are changing. This year we started in Charleston with a win by John Mellnik, who has just graduated from college. Our next two events were in Beaufort and Savannah where Nick Valente, a high school student, won both events.

Two of Nick’s cohorts are Avery Fanning and Rolfe Glover. These three spend a lot of time together on and off the water. No matter where they are or what they are doing they seem to always be pushing to outdo the other, especially when it comes to sailing. The end result is D-12 has some very promising young guns rising up through the ranks. While the master division of D-12 is happy to see these young guns doing well, they are not ready to hand the torch over just yet. Peter Gamble, Martin Willard, Charlie Usher, and John Potter are still in the hunt and will be doing all the they can to show they are still the kings of District 12.

District 13 Florida Antolin Rivera One model to copy:

In order to increase Laser events and highlight our sweet sailing platform around, there is a nice model to follow. Both the SunCoast Laser Fleet and the Treasure Coast Laser Fleet have adopted this successful pattern invented by the Treasure Coast folks.

We have a set schedule of “regattas through the year. These regattas are held only on Saturdays, as many races as we can push between 1300 and 1630, trinkets for awards, ten or five dollars entry fee, a standard set of NOR and SI and a traveling circuit. In my side of the coast (Tampa) we have races this year at Davis Island YC, Clearwater Sailing Center, Boca Ciega YC, Sarasota Sailing Squadron and Tampa Sailing Squadron. We all get to sail with friends, travel around a little and showcase the Laser at different venues. The folks at Lake Eustis and Clearwater Sailing Center have standard schedules of races where everybody associated with them can plan on being there as often as they want. All of these offerings also count with a “cheerleader/organizer/email person. That person handles their email announcements and or web page announcements. We on the SunCoast Laser Fleet have been doing

District 15 Texas Bruce Moore

We had 22 Full Rigs and 5 Radials in light to moderate conditions that provided lots of wind shifts. Results are posted at http://www.cscsailing.org/race_results.html. PRO Steve Bell and his team got in five races on Saturday and three on Sunday in conditions that were trying at times. The regatta chairman, Mike Lipari, did a great job delegating meals so no one got stuck doing the whole thing, with breakfast tacos on Saturday morning, subs for lunch, honey baked ham and turkey for dinner saturday, home made sweet rolls on Sunday morning and pizza for lunch on Sunday. Special thanks to Mike’s wife for a great ham and turkey dinner on Saturday night. The competition was quite close; 8 points separated 4th through 9th place. There were several mark roundings where the conversation midway down the leg was “this is going to be a huge raft-up, but there wasn’t much yelling and bumping. There were no protests that made it all the way to a hearing. I think just about everyone had a great time.

GTYC Spring Regatta (story by Tom Babel) The 2012 GTYC Laser Spring Regatta was held on May 12, 2012. The racers were greeted by a light 510 mph Northerly breeze under sunny skies. Over a dozen Radial and standard rigs sailed in the five race, no throw-out series. The standard rig fleet was dominated by Jamie Stuursma (GTYC) with a total of six points. His boat speed, solid tactics and great starts proved unstoppable by the remainder of the fleet. Jeff Ragains (Chicago) sailed a strong series to finish second. Past spring champion Jon Forton (GTYC) finished third. In the radial fleet, Dirk Phelps sailed strong to win the gold medal. He was followed by Ryan Clulo and Colton Gerber in second and third respectively. For complete results go to the Laser page at www.gtyc.org. Special thanks to Jordon Owen (PRO), Jim Sorbie & crew (support, pictures), Team Phelps (on the water support) and Bob Clark (on the water support). U of M Spring Regatta - June 17th Not dampened by the prediction of thunder storms, seven boats were on the starting line for the annual Spring Laser Regatta at Base Line Lake in Dexter, MI. We borrowed PRO George Griswald from his duties on the college racing circuit. His work was cut out for him to set a fair course in the changing weather patterns. Jim Meyer showed his local knowledge and boat speed winning the first two races with club member Carey Jones giving him a close chase. The fleet was closely packed during these conditions until a spring squall hit. The survivors of these conditions placed in the top of the fleet as the wind dropped during the heavy rain. We all retreated to the clubhouse for a fabulous grilled lunch provide by Robert Parker and waited for the rain to clear. The brightening sky brought no wind so the two morning races determined the finishing order: 1. Jim Meyer 2. Carey Jones 3. Tim Ryan 4. Jane Tucker (tie) 5. Tom Hernick (tie) 6. Jeanne Bisanz 7. District 22 Montana Mike Gilbert

D22 Montana is suffering through - or enjoying - a great deal of the NW weather pattern, which we get a day or two behind Seattle. LOTS of rain, chilly, but very green and beautiful. All signs point to a beautiful late summer here. Perfect for August sailing on beautiful Flathead Lake in NW Montana.

The District 22 Championship and Flathead Laser Championship will be held August 18-19 at the north end of Flathead Lake, within sight of Glacier National Park. Sturdy early thermals, seasonal breeze, and a spectacular setting should make it an enjoyable event. A 4.7 class will be included in this year’s event. The event will be generously hosted by the North Flathead YC in Somers, MT. Camping is available on site, or lodging in the nearby resort towns of Bigfork and Lakeside, as well as the City of Kalispell.

We are planning the Whitefish Lake Regatta for July 14-15. Whitefish is located near the base of Big Mountain ski resort in NW Montana. Races are held right off the City beach with a post-race brunch and fun a block up the hill at a home overlooking the water. Last year we ran short-course racing with some races only 12 minute long…it’s all about starting! There were starts with the whole fleet over the line! We had a nice group of Albertans joining us last year and we welcome them all back.

Our friends in Billings, in the eastern part of the state, are having success in building a youth sailing academy on nearby Lake Elmo. Tim Sauer, Dennis Muri, Greg Bleyer, and Harold Gilliam teach sailing theory, basic boat handling, sailing, and racing technique to local kids free of charge, with Lasers provided. Several of them will be competing in the 4.7 class at the District Championship.

The sun is just starting to peek through the Portland cloud cover, but Laser sailors have been churning up the Willamette River for months now. Seventeen boats toughed out Willamette Sailing Club’s Sunday afternoon winter series, with Bill Symes landing on top, followed by Jeremy Lynn and John Purdy. Symes and Lynn retained the top two spots in the 24-boat spring series, this time followed by Dave Sexton. WSC’s new middle school Laser team wrapped up a successful first season June 1 with a youth regatta and gala awards party. Sean Grealish finished first, followed by Alexa Ripple and John Ped. Watch for these names in the future! The 2012 traveling season kicked off June 2-3 at Vancouver Lake Sailing Club’s annual regatta. The wind gods smiled on Saturday, delivering 10-12 knots all day for four great races, but frowned on Sunday, giving up a meager <1 knot for one very slow race. Bill Symes prevailed, with John Sturman and John Purdy filling out the podium. The annual migration of Laser sailors to the Columbia River Gorge begins next week with CGRA’s WIND Youth Clinic (July 10-12) and

Regatta (July 14-15). Celebrity coach Javier “Rulo” Borojovich heads an all-star coaching staff for WIND as well as for the Gorge Laser Performance Clinic July 14-16. Next up is the infamous Laser Gorge Blowout July 17, which is drawing rock stars from around the country to try to break Emery Wager’s record time for the 18-mile burn from Cascade Locks to Hood River. For anyone left standing, there’s the grand finale July 19-22, the 2012 Laser North American Championship. Association (parkcitysailing.org) the first Tuesday night in June. The fleet has hit critical mass and word now spreads very rapidly on the existence of the program, available boats, and the clinics/coaching. The PCSA continues its efforts at expanding its available storage within the Jordanelle State Park, just outside of Park City, UT., and those efforts are paying off with an agreement nearly inked, allowing far more than the 35 boats that the group currently has space for, to be stored. That will allow us to up our nightly racing average from its current number of 22 to a hoped 25-27 boats per night. The PCSA is also excited for the return of the District 23 Championships on the weekend of September 2223, 2012 where we hope to surpass the 30 boat fleets we’ve fielded in the past. Denver Sailing Association (www.communitysailing.org and www.usdiscovery.com/laser) Denver Sailing Association hosted the first regatta of the season on May 19 & 20 at the Cherry Creek Reservoir. The Shootout/ Hornblower Regatta attracted over 50 racers from all over the region and 5 Junior Sailors from the CSC Race Team. All Juniors competed in the adult Laser Fleet with over 15 racers. The first day of racing came with rain, cold temperatures and lots of wind! All the Juniors battled the conditions on Saturday and were rewarding with a beautiful day of sailing on Sunday. Great job to all the Junior Racers and wish them luck as they prepare for the 2012 sailing season. Summer is here and our Junior Sailing Program kicks off this week at the Cherry Creek Reservoir. We offer Learn To Sail, Intermediate and Advance Sailing Camps for ages 8-17 years old through August 17. Also, our Little Puff Camps are great

for 5-7 year olds who are just getting into the sport. CSC is also excited to announce that we will be offering Week-long Youth Learn To Sail Camps at the Union Reservoir in Longmont, CO. More information below. We hope to see all of you on the water this summer! The Aspen Annual regatta is in July at beautiful Lake Rudi and the Aspen Yacht Club. Wind can be light to 20 knots. Wind direction is predictable enough that the starting line is permanent. The Colorado Laser Championships at the Grand Lake Yacht Club is our biggest and exclusively laser regatta in mid August. The Grand Lake Yacht Club is an awesome venue at the scenic edge of Rocky Mountain National Park.

District 24 Champs Elvstrom-Zellerbach Regatta May 5-6, 2012 St Francis YC

The wind instrument at Anita Rock shows the Westerly started building at 1030 on Saturday May 5. Starting from 3-5 knots it had been blowing since 8am, it passed through 10 knots at noon, and peaked at steady 20 knots gusting to mid 20s from 2pm to 6pm. Sunday was similar, but peaked at steady 15 gusting to 20. Both days were flood going to ebb. The sun was shining and there were no clouds in the sky !

There were 14 boats in the standard fleet and 16 boats in the radial fleet. Each fleet had 6 races. In the radials, Christine Neville won, showing great consistency with all first places. A one point difference separated second place Lola Bushnell from third place Kyle Larsen. In the standards, it all came down to the last race. Peter Vessella won, followed by Charlie Buckingham and Tracy Usher.

District 24 Grand Prix In 2006, Ken Crawford and Ralph Pombo created a summer series for district 24. They included regattas over a wide geographic area, and on lakes in the mountains as well as events on SF Bay or the Pacific Ocean. District 24 covers a lot of diverse sailing environments, and they designed the series to encourage people to sample all of them. They found a sponsor, Svendsen’s Boat Works.

The winners to date are: 2006 Walt Spevak 2007 Walt Spevak 2008 David Lapier 2009 Mike Bishop 2010 Radial Christy Usher 2010 Standard Tracy Usher.

The next event in the series is the High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake, at an elevation of 7000 feet. You can follow this series here: http://svendsens-grand-prix.myfleet.org/

manager of the rig shop at the Alameda West Marine. Ryan organized and hosted a bring-yourown-boat hands-on rigging workshop in West Marine’s parking lot Saturday June 2. There were stations for drilling out rivets, washing and polishing hulls, gelcoat, etc… and there were West Marine rigging staff to offer advice. Ryan & West Marine also invited their competitor Svendsen’s Boat Works to participate, as they are the local official parts dealer. The weather was great, the free BBQ was a hit, and some new faces showed up to check it out.

Masters North Americans The next major regatta in district 24 is the Masters North Americans. This will be held July 27-29 at Richmond Yacht Club, and raced on the Berkeley circle area of the central SF Bay. The NOR and other information can be found at http://richmondyc.org

Through this past winter and spring, District 25 has been the location of non-stop Laser racing! From the ISAF Youth Qualifier in Radials in January, Master Midwinter’s in February, and Laser Midwinter’s West in March, there is no lack of Laser Sailing for all ages! Go to www.abyc.org for results.

District 25 stretches along the Pacific Coast from the Mexican border to the South to Santa Barbara to the North, or some 200 miles of the best sailing in North America! On one weekend, May 5th & 6th, Lasers raced in three venues along these 200 miles. The Laser California Masters Championship was held at Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego. Master sailors came from as far as Colorado, Arizona, and Northern California to compete in the shifty winds of Mission Beach. Local Knowledge was key as the top finishers are San Diego locals:

Laser California Masters Results Doug Hart MBYC – Grand Master Dave Leuck MBYC – Master Conor Gallagher MBYC – Apprentice Master David Wyllie – 1st Great Grand Master

On the same weekend Santa Barbara Yacht Club held its annual Cinco de Mayo regatta hosting several One Design fleets including Lasers and Laser Radials. This regatta also was enjoyed by traveling from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Here are the top finishers; Cinco de Mayo Regatta (Santa Barbara) Top Lasers and Radials Standard: Steven Long – SBYC Matt Long – SBYC Devin Walsh – SBSC Radial: Kristopher Swanson – SFYC Simone Staff – CYC Cooper Weitz – CYC On that Sunday, Lasers had regular fleet races at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA, in preparation for upcoming events this summer

including the Pacific Coast Championships at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, June 22-24 (www.cbyc.org); Laser North American Championships at Cascade Locks, OR, July 19-22 (www.cgra.org) , and the Masters North American Championship at Richmond Yacht Club July 27-29 (www.richmondyc.org). Finally, the District 25 Championships will be held in conjunction with Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s Labor Day regatta on September 1-2 (www.abyc.org).

sailors to contact their respective clubs and volunteer!

17 Lasers also raced at ABYC Memorial Day Regatta on May 26-27. Winter and spring gave very fickle wind conditions since the beginning of the year, so it was refreshing to have the typical Long Beach 15-18 knots on both days of the regatta! Racing also included inside the Bay racing for racers who prefer to be on flat water and lunch breaks on shore. Here are the op finishers:

ABYC Memorial Day Regatta Vann Wilson – ABYC Chuck Tripp – ABYC Jorge Suarez – ABYC Top Bay Standard – Chris Crosley ABYC Top Bay Radial – Kristina Miller NHYC

Vann Wilson dominated with five straight bullets! And, it should be noted that the top two racers are Grand Masters!

Finally, one of the best things you can do as a racing sailor is to volunteer for race committee. It not only makes you a better racer, but the satisfaction of contributing your mind and muscle to help other sailors reach their goals is boundless! I encourage all Laser
