Creatine: A supplement with two roles EVAN LEWIS MSC. CSCS, CK
This is the second article in a series examining nutritional aides that can affect athletic performance. My previous article discussed research of caffeine’s effects when consumed before and during exercise. This article examines carbohydrate loading and its use to fuel muscles for competition. To begin it is important to understand what creatine is and how it fits into performance. Creatine is an inorganic phosphorus compound naturally found within muscle and also within meat. For muscle, creatine is an important energy source that is used to power working muscles.
Muscle contractions are powered by adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an inorganic compound of three phosphates. To produce energy ATP is split into adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and a single phosphate (P). Continued muscle contractions that are required during exercise, use up stored ATP creating a high concentration of ADP and P as metabolic by-products. When this occurs, muscles require a rapid source of energy to continue contracting, which is where creatine fits in. Creatine is rapidly broken down to provide a single P that binds with ADP to replenish muscle ATP allowing muscle contractions to continue.
At this point you might ask: at what point are ATP and Creatine used for energy and how does this all fit together for exercise? This is a good question since carbohydrates and fats typically get most of the attention for being used to provide working muscles energy. While carbohydrates and fats are converted into ATP, they come into play later. At the beginning of exercise (i.e. 0-10 seconds) stored ATP is the primary source of energy for your muscle. As stored ATP runs out muscle creatine is used for the next 10-20 seconds to replenish ATP. This timing allows for muscles to start using stored carbohydrates in the form of glycogen for energy. Since the body is still in the ‘startup phase’ of exercise, glycogen is broken down without oxygen, which forms lactic acid. By approximately 3 minutes into exercise that is not maximal intensity, working muscles have enough energy oxygen to begin breaking down carbohydrates and fats, which provide a sustained source of energy.
Figure 1 – A representation of the different energy systems muscle uses during the transition from rest to moderate intensity exercise.
10
Based on this information, why is creatine supplementation so popular? In the mid 1990s it was discovered that creatine or creatine monohydrate (the commercial form), could be used to increase the concentration of free creatine stores within muscle. As a result, this would allow skeletal muscle to regenerate ATP more quickly for a longer period of time during the first 30 seconds of exercise. So for sports requiring rapid bursts of energy or sprint related sports (i.e. track and field and football), this could be a considerable advantage. There is a large body of research examining the effect of creatine supplementation on athletic performance and body composition. Currently, the most accepted method of increasing muscle creatine stores is
through supplementation with creatine monohydrate in a 5 day loading protocol of 20g/day, consumed with an equal or greater amount of carbohydrates and plenty of water to help the creatine enter muscle cells. After the loading phase, a maintenance phase occurs where 2-5g/day is consumed to maintain muscle creatine stores.
After a 5-day loading period, Izquierdo et al. (1)examined changes the effects on a group of European Handball players. Athletes in the supplementation group increased body mass by approximately 0.6 kg (1.3lbs), increased single rep max strength and sprint performance over nonsupplementing controls. In a longer-term study, Becque et al. (2) reveal that six weeks of supplementation lead to an increase in body weight by 2kg (4.4lbs), from increased muscle mass and water retention. In a study by Tarnopolsky et al., (3) researchers compared the effects of creatine and post-exercise protein with carbohydrate supplementation on strength and body composition measurements before and after eight weeks of training in university aged males. Findings revealed that both groups experienced similar gains in muscle mass, muscle fibre size and increases in max strength. The only difference between
groups was the change in body weight, as the creatine group gained an average of 4.3kg (9.5lbs) compared to 1.9kg (4.2lbs) in the protein group.
It is clear that creatine supplementation can have an effect for individuals involved in weight lifting and sprint based sports. An increase in muscle creatine stores can lead to increased energy, which can increase training effects and result in more rapid gains in strength and body weight.
However, a key factor in creatine’s ability to increase body weight is through water retention, which is necessary for it to be digested and absorbed by muscle. Based on the findings of Tarnopolsky et al. it is clear that creatine supplementation is not necessary to increase muscle strength, and proper recovery nutrition is sufficient to provide your muscles with nutrient requirements to become a better athlete. VINTAGE LASERS
Laser 1575
EUAN SWAN
In 1972 I left the OK Dinghy class and joined the fast growing Laser class in Montreal at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club. Laser 1575 was purchased as a “factory second” directly from the original Performance Sailcraft factory in Montreal. She was considered a “second” due to her white deck at a time when Lasers of that era all had beige decks. Named Dennarah, she has been with me for the past 40 years and is still going strong with her original board, rudder, spars and Elvstrom sail (although somewhat blown out)!
Dennarah originally was sailed and raced on Lac St Louis in Montreal and later in the Bedford Basin, Halifax and Summerside harbours of Atlantic Canada. In 1980 she even enjoyed the waters of the Caribbean thanks to trip south courtesy of the Canadian Navy. A radial rig was purchased for her in the 1980s to accommodate the next generation of Laser sailors in my growing family. Since 1991, Dennarah has been based in Ottawa and has accompanied the family on summer vacations in the Ottawa area. In 2004 after 16 years of recreational sailing she crossed a start line once again at the Ontario Masters Laser Regatta at Lac Deschenes Sailing Club in Ottawa. Dennarah is now kept at the foot of the our garden on the banks of the Ottawa River. Long live the Laser! Nepean Sailing Club www.nsc.ca Ottawa, Ontario Canada

Remembering Brian Burant
MARK KASTEL LA CROSSE,WISCONSIN I am very sad to inform sailors in District 20, and master sailors around the country have known him, that our good friend, and longtime competitor, Brian Burant of Madison, passed away September 10 while competing in the district championships in Green Bay. After the 25 boats got off the line, for the first race, in moderate wind, one boat was laying on its side in the starting area. When the race committee investigated they found Brian unconscious, wearing his life preserver, and lying in the sail. Brian, who was 59, lean and in excellent health, appears to have died instantly of a massive heart attack.
I’ve known Brian and his family for decades. When we had regular regattas in Madison they consistently opened their home to me and Brian was a regular at the Border Challenge in La Crosse. He was a cool competitor frequently at the front of the pack and the nicest person you would ever encounter on or off the water.
skippers meeting. His home club, where he had been Commodore, the Monona Sailing Club, held a special recognition in his honor at their annual meeting and banquet on October 22.
I’m sure other friends, and competitors who knew Brian, join me in sending condolences to the family. A trust fund for the benefit of his twin daughters’ education has been set up. Anna and Tess are in their first year of college. Anna attends UW Madison while Tess is attending Edgewood College also in Madison.
If you would like to make a donation to the trust fund please send a check payable to Burant Family Education Trust to the attention of Bette McCaulley (Brian’s wife), 118 Meadowlark Drive, Madison, WI 53714.
We raced the Border Challenge, the following weekend, in his memory and there was a short recognition of Brian’s life at the

District Reports District 1 Nova Scotia Danielle Dube
In late September/early October the CYA Laser and Radial National Championships were held in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia. Many sailors from District 1 were in attendance for the four day event, which tested sailors with a variety of conditions. In the women’s laser radial fleet of 21 boats, RNSYS sailors Lisa Ross and Danielle Dube (that would be me) tied on points and placed second and third respectively. Erin Rafuse, also from the Squadron, placed 6th, and young upstarts Corinne Peters and Meghan Henneberry finished 15th and 20th. In the laser radial men’s fleet, Alexander Burke from Hubbards Sailing Club finished 2nd, with Jack Bignell, Nathan Dunn, Luke Ruitenberg and Alexander Sapp all from the Royal NS Yacht Squadron following closely behind. Henry Machum, a former 420 sailor and this year’s Canadian representative at the Volvo Youth Worlds in Croatia, finished 8th after falling victim to a few letter scores, but showed lots of promise in his racing and I’m confident that we’ll be seeing great results from him in the future. Welcome to the laser fleet Henry! And last but not least, in the laser full rig class, District 1 sailors had a rough go of it, with this event being the National Team Qualifier for the laser fleet, and with the best from Canada AND the United States in attendance. Anthony Bell of Hubbards Sailing Club finished 18th, with fellow Nova Scotian sailors Bryant Wood (LYC/RNSYS), Zachary Dunn (RNSYS), and Max Seward (BBYC) in 20th, 21st, and 23rd respectively. After the Canadian Nationals things quieted down significantly in District 1, aside from the laser radial National Team girls who continued to train both at home and abroad. Lisa Ross moved her training to Perth, Australia where she met up with an international training group to prepare for the ISAF Worlds in Perth in December. At the same time, Erin Rafuse and I flew to Kiel in Germany, picked up boats, and drove to Lake Garda in Italy to train with the German team. Before returning to Canada we also took part in the French Nationals in Hyeres, France. In late November we flew to Perth, Australia to meet up with the rest of the team and begin acclimatizing and preparing for the Worlds. On Monday December 5th the racing kicked off in Perth. Day 1 of the qualifiers saw warm weather and sea breeze conditions of 10-14 knots. I had the best day of the bunch, posting a 13, 16 in the blue fleet qualifying races. Lisa Ross and Erin Rafuse struggled in the yellow fleet qualifier, and were quite deep on the scoreboard by the end of the day. Day 2 was called off due to thunderstorms, accompanied by more rain than Perth usually sees in a month. Day 3 was the final day of qualifiers, with three long races held in rough, windy conditions. Erin Rafuse had difficulty with her speed all day, and consequently ended up in the Silver fleet. Lisa Ross had quite a good day, and it seemed that it would be enough to scrape into the gold fleet. Shockingly, when the results came through, she had missed the cut by 2 places. I had a decent day, and combined with my results from day 1 it was enough to cement me into the gold fleet. The next day was again long and tiring, with 3 races in varying conditions. Day 5 was a lay day with no racing scheduled, and day 6
24
was the final day of racing with 2 races held in a strong sea breeze. Final results from D1 sailors were myself in 40th, Lisa in 52nd, and Erin in 77th out of an extremely tough 102 boat fleet. With the worlds results bringing us up to date at the time that I’m writing this, we can start looking forward to this winter, when there will be a strong D1 contingent headed south for regattas in Florida (mainly the Miami OCR in late January, the Women’s North Americans in the beginning of February, and the Midwinters East at the end of February). There, D1 sailors will brush off the dust bunnies and spend some quality time training and racing, which the weather at home usually doesn’t allow for! Look forward to the next report for results from these regattas, and I’d love to include some pictures if anyone is willing to send me some! (please send to Danielle.Dube@dal.ca). I wish everyone a wonderful winter season and a happy New Year!
District 4 Manitoba, Canada Brigitte Smutny
Greetings to all Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 and Master sailors who sail and/or race in District 5! The winter months in our district normally last from October until May with lots of snow, very cold temperatures and thick ice on the lakes. To beat the cold and to get their feet wet our provincial team is participating in a winter training out of the Royal Victoria YC in BC. Our big 14 boat trailer and our monster truck is parked out there for six month and waiting for us to be used. The winter training
includes three camps and the Midwinter’s West in Alamitos Bay, CAL.
District 6 Vancouver, Canada Andy Hunt
Greetings from Vancouver. The sailing season in District 6 is slowly winding down. There is one club, the Surrey Sailing Club, which has a Frostbite Series throughout the winter (November through February) in District 6. The only other club that I am aware of that has sailing in the winter (it is training sessions) is the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. The other clubs have shut down their sailing programs and if sailors want to sail or race, they have to do it by themselves (not necessarily a bad thing).
For regattas, there was one in September (Fall Dinghy Championships), one in October (Pumpkin Bowl) and one in November (Bluenose Regatta). The Royal Victoria Yacht Club was the host venue for the Fall Dinghy Championships which were held on September 24 and 25. The turnout for all three classes (Laser Standards, Laser Radials and Laser 4.7s) was low. There were 9 Laser Standards, 21 Laser Radials and 6 Laser 4.7s. Unfortunately for the sailors, the weather did not cooperate. The first day of the regatta was a wash-out due to a fog bank which prevented the wind from appearing. No racing on that day. On Sunday, one race was all that the race committee could manage. The race committee tried to run a race in heavy winds in the morning but had to abandon the race. They then managed to get in the one race so that at least the regatta was official. In the Laser Standards, Bob Britten won the race while Aiden Koster was second and Nick Smith was third. In the Laser Radials, Maura Dewey won the race that counted and Max Gallant was second and Chris Wilson was third. The positions of the 6 Laser 4.7s (I want to encourage more 4.7s) were as follows: Jake Cullen (1); Hayley Linton (2); Graham Brown (3); Kyle Gerrard (4); Connor Black (5) and Jim Donaldson (6). For those of you who are interested in the scoring, details can be found on the RVYC website (www.rvyc.bc.ca). The West Vancouver Yacht Club was host to the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta on October 22 and 23. There were Lasers (11), Laser Radials (36) and Laser 4.7s (9). Sailors came from all over BC as well as one sailor who came from Seattle. The Pumpkin Bowl Regatta was the last regatta of the Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing Youth Circuit. This circuit is made up of 8 local regattas and sailors are scored using a high point system (the more sailors at an event, the higher the score) and use their best 6 regattas. For the Pumpkin Bowl, Lasers and Laser Radials sailed on a different course than the Laser 4.7s. All of the sailors in the Lasers and Laser Radials were given redress points. There were enough races that a throughout race was used in calculating the scores. The top four Laser Standards were: Alexander Heinzemann, RvanYC, 9.00; Aiden Koster, RvicYC, 14.00; Reid Cannon, RvicYC, 16.00 and Cole Wunder, WVYC/NSST, 37.00. The top ten Laser Radials were: Natalia Montemayor, RvanYC, 11.00; Maura Dewey, RvicYC. 17.00; Alexander Kroitzsch, RvanYC, 24.00; Hanne Weaver, SYC, 31.7; Matthew Turner, RvicYC, 32.00; Fillah Karim, RvanYC, 33.00; Ellie Shaw, RvanYC, 41.2; Max Gallant, RvicYC, 43.5; Adrian Vlasic, RvanYC, 48.00 and Chris Wilson, WVYC/NSST, 50.00. The top three Laser 4.7s were: Alexander Fritz, RvanYC, 10.00; Jake Cullen, RvanYC, 14.00 and Hayley Linton, RvanYC, 15.00. Complete results for the Pumpkin Bowl can be found on the West Vancouver Yacht Club’s website (under racing) at: www.wvyc.bc.ca. The final regatta for 2011 was the BlueNose Regatta. This regatta used to attract upwards of 50+ Lasers but now, sadly, it is considered a success if 10 boats of each class (Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7) show up. For 2011, there were 7 Lasers, 11 Laser Radials and 5 Laser 4.7s. Each class had 5 races. The Kitsilano Yacht Club hosted the event on November 5 and 6. The first race on Saturday was raced in light easterly winds. The race committee delayed the start of the second race while they waited for the wind to switch to the west. When the westerly winds materialized, it was great sailing. The winds were between 10
WINTER 2012
and 15 knots and the race committee ran three races. On Sunday, the winds did not really cooperate. One race was tried but abandoned. The race committee then waited until almost the time limit (15:00hrs) but managed to get one race off which meant that each sailor had a throwout race. Most of the competitors came from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. The top three Lasers were: Richardo Montemayor, RvanYC, 5.00; Kyle Martin, RvanYC, 10.00 and Tony Martin, JSCA, 12.00. The top four Laser Radials were: Alexander Fritz, RvanYC, 7.00; Becky Power, RvanYC, 10.00; Natalia Montemayor, RvanYC, 10.00 and Fillah Karim, RvanYC. The top three Laser 4.7s were: Jake Cullen, RvanYC, 4.00; Hayley Linton, RvanYC, 10.00 and Kyle Gerrand, RvanYC, 12.00. As mentioned previously, Helly Hansen and BC Sailing provide sponsorship and support for youth events. The Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing youth circuit is run throughout the spring, summer and fall. Adults can compete in the events that make up the circuit but the emphasize is on the youth sailors. Each of the various clubs sends their youth race team to as many events as possible. There were 69 Laser Sailors who competed in at least one event. Laser Sailors from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club dominated the top six out of ten positions with the RVYC sailors finishing 1st. (Reid Cannon), 3rd. (Aiden Koster), 4th. (Bob Britten), 5th. (David Berry) and 6th. (Ian Elliott). The other top fifteen sailors were: Thomas Roehrl, RvanYC (2nd) , Kevin Grierson, RvanYC (7th.); Sascha Smutny, JSCA (8th.); Alexander Heinzemann, RvanYC (9th.); Andriy Kanyuka, VSC (10th); Jacek Suski, JSCA (11th); Tony Martin, JSCA (12th.); Emerson Kirby, COSA (13th); Ricardo Montemayor, RvanYC (14th) and Kyle Martin, RvanYC, (15th.). There were a total of 76 Laser Radial sailors who competed in the circuit. The top fifteen sailors are: Maura Dewey, RvicYC, (1st); Adrian Vlasic, RvanYC (2nd); Natalie Montemayor, RvanYC (3rd); Matthew Turner, RvicYC (4th.); Chris Wilson, NSST (5th.); Fillah Karim, NSST (6th); Alexander Knoitzsch (RvanYC, (7th,); Max Gallant. RvicYC. 8th), Miranda MacGillvray, RvanYC, 9th.; Austin Stewart, HSC (10th); Isabellan Bertold, RvanYC (11th); Joanna Moore, RvanYC, (12th); Adam Sorenson (RvanYC (13th), Hanne Weaver, SYC (14th.) and Jamie Bone (15th). There were 16 Laser 4.7s in total and sailors from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club dominated the top five position, These sailors were, Jake Cullen, Hayley Linton, Alexander Fritz, Connor Black and Ben MacVicar. Isabella Bertold was named the BCSailing Sailor of the Year and the BCSailing Male Youth Sailor of the year went to Kyle Martin. If all goes according to plan, the new District 6 website (www.district6x.ca) should be up and running in the new year. Mucho thanks to Bob Britten for taking on the task of creating the website. For those sailors who like to plan ahead, there will be a series of three regattas in the summer of 2012 on the west coast. The first regatta will be the 2012 Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 North Americans, hosted by former District 6 club, the Columbia Gorge Racing Association at Cascade Locks on July 19 – 22. The second regatta will be the North American Laser Masters at the Richmond Yacht Club on July 27 to 29. The final regatta will be the 2012 Canadian Laser Master Championships. This regatta will be hosted by the Jericho Sailing Centre and will be on August 4 to 6. I hope that sailors will be

able to charter the same boat for all three regattas but that still has to be confirmed by the dealer(s).
District 7 Kim Ferguson Rhode Island www.laserdistrict7.com
The sailors of district 7 have had a busy and very successful 2011!
First and foremost, a big shout out goes to Rob Crane of Darien, CT for his recent success at the ISAF Laser Worlds (Perth, Australia), which snagged him the berth to represent the USA in the 2012 Olympic games! “Its all on the line tomorrow. Two and a half years of training are going to come down to two final races. If I sail well and get a little luck on my side I will qualify for the Olympic games. If not, this rather looks like the end of the road and a look at the job market. Tomorrow, my plan is to go out there and give it everything I’ve got. I will have to get helped out of the boat before I throw in the towel.” – Rob Crane
Well, if that’s not the Olympic Spirit, I don’t know what is! Rob went out, under pressure and pulled off more than he needed to, finishing off the regatta (14th overall) with a 1,2 and sealing his spot on the US Olympic Team. District 10 New Jersey Eric Reitinger
The fall had some great opportunities for sailors to get out and race. There were 3 major fall series going on at the same time, offering various locations for anyone to sail. Furthest south, Brant Beach hosted their annual fall series over 3 weekends in September and October. 3 fulls and 2 radials sailed in The series. Newt Wattis (Surf City YC) won the fulls and Paul Meggit (Surf City YC) won the radials. Monmouth had to make repairs to their bulkhead over the fall and winter, canceling many of their events which sadly that included their popular frostbite series and fall regatta. Shrewsbury tried to get folks over with a fall series and then later a frostbite series which lasted all through October. Beachwood also hosts an annual fall series with good turnouts every year and able to get all 3 fleets out and racing (5 fulls, 10 radials and 4 4.7s). Brant Beach hosted the High School Singlehanded qualifiers (Cressy) this year again. With another great turnout, 37 radials and 16 full rigs, each fleet raced 12 races over 2 days and the top 3 in each fleet qualifying for the finals in Chicago. The first day of October we saw the revival of a regatta in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Cup was sailed just off the pier in front of the Independence Seaport Museum. A great turnout of 19 boats (including 2 radials) raced in the river. Ben DuPont won the regatta with Mike Russom (Upenn Sailing) in 2nd and Jack Swikart in 3rd (UPenn sailing and first radial). We hope this regatta stays around; they got a lot of boats out racing in many different fleets (PHRF A and B, Sunfish, Lasers, J/27, J/22, Lightning and Mariner), mostly off of the Museum, giving spectators a great view. Marsh Creek hosted their annual Fall Laser regatta on October 15th. It was very windy day with steady 20+mph and gusts to 30. 14 boats sailed and many stayed out. Peter Madonna won the tiebreaker to win the regatta. Search “2011 MCSC Fall Regatta” on Youtube to find video of the action/carnage. There were 2 frostbite series this season. Marsh Creek hosted the Saturday racing while Cooper River was on Sunday. Marsh Creek hosted Sunfish, Lasers and Open fleets with as many races as they could get all for free!! 17 different boats raced the 5 days with Peter Madonna (Marsh Creek SC) winning the series, Tony Iocono (NYC) 2nd and Mohamed Harraz (Marsh Creek SC) in 3rd. Cooper River hosted their annual frostbite series over 4 weekends in November and December including Thanksgiving. 30 different full rigs and 7 radials sailed the series which offered some great weather (no snow or below freezing temps), and very trying conditions. Big shifts were not uncommon as well as major velocity changes. To get an idea of what we raced in you can see the video from 2 days courtesy of Craig Priniski (Cooper River YC). Search “Frostbite” and “Frostbite 2” on vimeo.com or check out http://vimeo.com/32844470 and http://vimeo.com/33105904. John MacCauseland (Cooper River YC) defended his title winning 4 of the 5 weekends. Eric Reitinger (Brant Beach YC)
25
was 2nd, John Burnham (CRYC) in 3rd, Rob Seidelman(Cooper River YC) in 4th and Austin Neuman(Riverton YC) in 5th. Faye Flam (CRYC) was first woman and Jake Ellis was first Junior not in the top 5. Kayla Ellis(Brant Beach YC) defended her radial title, Caroline Udell(Riverton YC) in 2nd and Chaz Burnham(Cooper River YC) in 3rd. This year marked the 25th year our PRO Jim Greenfield ran the races for the series. The sailors thanked him with a nice cake, providing him with a nice surprise. Thanks also go out to Beth Reitinger who’s been scorekeeping and helping Jim out on the boat for the past few years, making the long drive from Brant Beach to Cooper River every Sunday. Sailing starts up in the Spring so for now most make trips down south to Orange Bowl, Midwinters East and Masters Midwinters week. Keep in mind that Brant Beach is hosting the 2012 Laser Masters Nationals September 14-16. Make plans to attend!!
District 11 MD, VA, DE, DC, WV Jon Deutsch http://laserdistrict11.org
Our fall and summer sailing has wrapped up and we’re well into our Frostbite season with several of our clubs having regular or semi-regular frostbiting. Scheduling for 2012 is nearly complete. Our 2012 District 11 Championship is tentatively scheduled for the last weekend in September at Severn Sailing Association. The US Sailing Singlehand Area C Elimination will be in Surf City NJ the first weekend in June. And finally the Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters will be October 13-14 at FBYC. The rest of the schedule can be viewed at http://laserdistrict11.org
Starting in Mid-November weekly Sunday afternoon laser frostbiting got underway at Potomac River Sailing Association in Washington DC and at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis. Both fleets sail most every weekend November - March and see turnouts from 10-25 boats each week. Several other clubs such as Corsica River Yacht Club (MD eastern shore), Hampton Roads Dinghy Fleet, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, and the North East River Laser Fleet also have frostbiting planned. Check out the Laser District 11 website at http://laserdistrict11.org and sign up for our email list to get the latest details on frostbiting as the season gets underway. Some results from the summer and fall:
Broad Bay Sailing Association sailed their Annual regatta at the Old Dominion University Sailing Center at the end of June. In 7-10 knots Cameron Barclift won the regatta despite only winning 2 of 6 races. He was followed by Neil Ford and Robert Suhay.
A dozen D11 Radial sailors and 1 Standard rig sailor headed to Brant Beach New Jersey for the North American Championship. Highlights include a top 10 Radial Gold finish for Jeremy Herrin (FBYC) and a first in the Radial Silver Fleet by Harrison Hawk (AYC). Jon Deutsch won one of the races in the Standard Rig fleet. The Deep Creek Invitational Regatta in the western
26
Maryland mountains had 6 long and challenging races over the two day event for 16 sailors in the adult standard rig fleet. Darrell Van Hutten finished 1st with A Shoemaker and Chris Dodd just behind. In the 15-boat Junior Laser fleet sailing 9 races, J Benhard took the title followed by J Bennett and C Haseler.
The 100+ degree temperatures at the Corsica River Yacht Club annual regatta might have scared off a few of sailors, but those who stuck it out were treated to some great sailing conditions at the mouth of the Corsica River. After the first day of racing with 5 races sailed, there was a 4-way tie for first place. On Sunday two more races were sailed to break the deadlock with the event coming down to a lead change on the last leg of the last race to decide it. Jon Deutsch (FBYC) got the win with Holger Hinsch (SSA) 2nd and Nicholas Place (CRYC) in 3rd. Ware River Yacht Club hosted their 47th Virginia Governor’s Cup Regatta at the beginning of August. In the unusually heavy wind (at that regatta for that time of the year) it was the light-weight sailors who finished the best. Jake Spracher (HYC and a rising Freshman on the ODU Sailing Team) won the event followed by High School Senior Austin Powers (FBYC) and Alain Vincey (FBYC).
5 District 11 Masters sailors headed to the US Masters at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Michigan. Mike Schmidt (MRSA) was top D11 finisher with a 4th overall and 2nd Master. Margaret BondsPodlich (SSA), Roger Link (WRSC), John Gebhardt (SSA) and Rich Parolski also made the trip.
Fishing Bay Yacht Club’s 72nd Annual regatta only got in 3 races on the first day of the regatta after storms chased the sailors away from racing on Sunday. In the standard rig fleet Jon Deutsch (FBYC) put up 3 bullets to win the title. Jeff Moore (SMSA) finished 2nd while Mike Toms (FBYC) was 3rd. In the Radial fleet Jeremy Herrin (FBYC) was 1st overall and was followed by Conrad Roos (FBYC) and McKay Hanna (HYC).
Severn Sailing Association’s Crab Claw was plagued by a lack of wind both days. David Schoene (SSA) won the only race to take the regatta. Matt Schofield (AYC/SSA) and James McKenna (SSA) took 2nd and 3rd respectively. Kim Couranz (SSA) won the radial fleet.
Fishing Bay Yacht Club held their 30th Chesapeake Laser Masters Championship. Mike Schmidt was the overall winner. See the regatta reports in this issue for a write-up.

Our District 13 enjoyed a very active year. On the
middle of the State, we have four good organizations which sponsor Laser sailing all through the year. Lake Eustis, Treasure Coast Series, SunCoast Laser Fleet and Clearwater Community Center. Many more exist around the State and one of my goals for next year is to reach out to all of those Laser sailing pockets so we can reach more sailors and get more aligned. Our web page is running smoothly http://www.laserdistrict13.org/ thanks to the efforts of our web master Sari Wakefield.
I have a couple of requests for the many Laser sailors in Florida. Please join the Class and visit our web page, send in your activities to get published. US SAILING Laser District 13 Champions Crowned in Jensen Beach On Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11 the US SAILING Center/Martin County hosted 52 Laser Class sailors for their District 13 Championships. The races began at 11am on Saturday after waiting for the rain to subside, and continued Sunday in the Indian River just off the Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach
Winners of the event were crowned champion of the International Laser Class North American Region District 13, which covers the entire state of Florida, in each of three classes. The Laser is a single-handed boat with the ability to carry three different sail plans, depending on the weather and the size of the sailor. Two of the three sail plans are used in the quadrennial Olympic Games, the full rig for the men and the somewhat smaller Radial rig for the women’s competition. The District 13 champion qualifies for higher level championship regattas in the Laser, with the possibility that the winners at this weekend’s event could someday represent the United States in the Olympic Games. Sailors from as far away as Alaska and New England and many points in between competed in this regatta. This Regatta was sailed under International Laser Class Association (ILCA) rules and officiated by the Race Committee of the US SAILING Center/MartinCounty.
Winner in the 5 boat Laser 4.7 fleet was Sophie Naughton, from Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA; Winner in the 20 boat Laser Full Rig class was Mike Matan, from New York City, and; The winner of the 27 boat Laser Radial Class was Ravi Parent, Sarasota Youth Sailing Full results are available at the following link: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_re gatta_results.php?regatta_id=4602&show_sub_class =1&preview=1

YC Since this regatta was in D19 there was a pretty strong showing of participants from Michigan. As usual Macatawa Yacht Club did a great job hosting this event. Results can be found at www.yachtscoring.com August 20 Lake Lansing Annual – story by Doug Carlson
All the competitors under one of the sponsors banner - Photo by Stephen Wagner Even with cloudy skies and a forecast of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, 34 Laser sailors from two countries and three different states showed up to participate in the 2011 Lansing Sailing Club District 19 Laser Regatta. The morning started with light winds from the south with the fleet sailing Olympic courses. Not having sailed on Lake Lansing since 2003, Ken Swetka from St. Clair Shores, MI got off to a slow start posting a 7th in the first race. But he soon found his way posting a 2nd and then winning the next three races to earn his first LSC Regatta title. Olav Messerschmidt from East Lansing, MI also started slow, but his consistency paid off in the remaining races earning him 2nd place overall and finishing the highest finish among LSC members. The only other racers to post 1st place finishes in the regatta were Jim Meyer from Pinckney, MI and Chad Coberly from Grand Rapids, MI who finished 3rd and 4th for the day. There was special recognition again this year for both women and junior competitors. Susanna Tellschow from Haslett, MI and a LSC member finished 9th in the regatta to top the woman’s group. Isaac Kremers from Ada, MI fresh off of his recent win at the Western Michigan Yachting Association Championship finished 8th overall to lead the juniors. John LeFevre led the Race Committee for the second year in a row with assistance from, Jonathan Ahlbrand, Merrick Hurlbutt and Stephen Wagner. The team did a great job of keeping the day moving along under the threatening weather conditions and got five races in before the poor weather arrived forcing the participants off the water early to begin socializing under the cover of the LSC pavilion. Once the rain passed the grills were fired up and the “you cook-it” BBQ began. This year, grilled corn on the cob was added to the menu of huge steaks, chicken, baked potatoes, ice cream and beverages provided by Michigan Brewing Company. No one left the regatta hungry! LSC members Julie Pierce and Jim Fletcher took charge of purchasing and getting the food ready for what was one of the best BBQ’s ever seen at LSC. Along with trophies being awarded to the top finishers, door prizes provided by Avon Sailboats were awarded to the lucky ticket holders. As always the regatta was supported by many LSC members before and during the regatta in getting the facilities ready for hosting this annual event. Everyone was especially appreciative of our regatta sponsors, Avon Sailboats and Michigan Brewing Company, whose contributions continually make this regatta a special event for everyone that attends. Visit the Lansing Sailing Club site (www.lansingsailing.org) for complete race results and our Flickr site <Click here> to view over 450+ pictures of the event taken by LSC Photographer Stephen Wagner. Not much to report from the Dairy State. Boats are put away for the season as we await the arrival of the season’s first snowfall (late this year). A few of you road warriors will be heading down south during the off season representing D20 at the upcoming Orange Bowl, OCR, Midwinters East, Master Midwinter Madness and at Cabarete. For the rest of us armchair winter Laser sailors, here is how 2012 is shaping up: May 26 Memorial Day Laser Regatta at Milwaukee Yacht Club, Milwaukee, WI June 23-24* Door County Laser Regatta, Ephraim Yacht Club, Ephraim, WI July 28-29 D20 Champs/Hobelman Regatta Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club, Chicago, IL Aug 11-12 Great Lakes Champs/Al Henning Regatta Racine Yacht Club, Racine, WI Sept 1 Summers End Regatta North Shore Yacht Club, Chicago, IL Sept 22-23 Border Challenge, LaCrosse, Wisconsin * tentative dates In the next few weeks I should have confirmation for our other perennial events: Vlad, Verve, Talbot, Title town, Icebreaker and Oktoberfest. Stay fit and sail fast. See you on the water in 2012

Thanksgiving in Minneapolis includes the annual Thanksgiving Day Regatta. The Regatta was first run in 1980 and has been sailed every year since. I think we have been drifted out 2 times and frozen out 3 times. The forecast 50-degree temps helped build enthusiasm, and we had a great turnout with seven boats racing. Mike Elson and Larry Saltzman were there to open the shelter, dig out some marks and provide moral support. Holly Anderson came to cheer us on and take pictures. The Laser group included Bruce Martinson, Mike Elson, Lars Hansen, Conner Corgard, Bob Wolf, Jack Bitney, and Jeff Davis. The wind was 6-10 out of the south, and as the day progressed, the wind built a little more. This made for perfect November sailing, not too cold and not so windy that there were many capsizes. In a big move at the windward mark, Lars Hansen attempted to round the mark and roll right into a big gybe only to roll the boat right into a perfect capsize. Bruce won several of the starts (he was the rabbit), Bob made some big moves downwind passing boats from the wrong side of the run! Oh Lake Calhoun! Racing usually ends before noon, so people can get back home to help with Thanksgiving. After we were all packed up, Connor made the biggest move of the day. He stripped down to his sailing shorts and took a dive into Lake Calhoun. I wouldn’t call it swimming, but he did get fully underwater. Very impressive and a first for the Annual Lake Calhoun Thanksgiving Day Regatta.

The St. Francis Yacht Club 2011 “Fall Dinghy and Olympic Classes Regatta,” always an unpredictable event due to the season’s weather potentials came down to a one race event this year. Last year the plucky fleet was blown off the bay by “live to tell the tale “gusts. This year an untimely flood current pressed through the course rearranging the state of affairs. Those that hadn’t made the final windward mark or sufficiently over stood the lay line before it came waltzing through got reshuffled. The winner of the 2011 Slalom and the 2011 Women’s Single Handed Champion (Peter Shope and Christine Nevelle,) were both uncharacteristically hammered by the torrent. In the later starting radial fleet, leaders Drake Jensen and Jack Barton led respectively three quarters of the race, and seemingly had victory in hand. But they gambled left to soon and both became instant breakfast for Coach Andy Casey’s “radial flyers.” “Nowhere else does the road change so surprisingly quick;” one competitor was later heard to say. On the second day no breeze showed up. Oh well, de-rig, pack up and enjoy the hospitality. Those radial kids are making Coach Andy Casey look good! Full Rig: 1) Peter Phelan; 2) John Andron; 3) Tracy Usher; 4) Doug Seeman; 5) Nick Burke; 6) Mike Rutledge; 7) Emilio Castelli (19 Boats) Radial Rig: 1) Kyle Larsen; 2) Lola Bushnell; 3) Lawson Willard; 4) Lindsey Baab; 5) Will Dana; 6) Max Hamker; 7) Drake Jensen; 8) Jack Barton (16 Boats) The 2011 - Svendsens’ “District 24 Grand Prix.” With a combination of top finishes and competing in at least half of the Northern California GP regattas the high score champions are Tracy Usher, Full Rig - and Drake Jensen, Radial Rig. A big thanks to “Svendsens Marine” and Alex Jordan again this year for all the support and service they provided. ABYC “Turkey Day Regatta” in D25 drew quite a few D24 sailors south to their version of a one day blowout. Four races were sailed Saturday. Southwest winds started at 8 knots building with whitecaps to12 knots by afternoon but remained puffy and shifty all day. Drake Jensen lost a tiebreak for fifth with consistent single digit finishes which is a positive sign for his return to the full rig. Mike Bishop pulled a bullet and a second maintaining good position for day two. Sunday was cancelled due to 25 to 30kt winds. Just what the doctor ordered for some. A bunch of kids in radials went out and had a blast blasting around the islands for a couple of hours. Plenty of power safety boats chaperoned.
Full Rig - Drake Jensen 6th,) Mike Bishop 8th, Michael Rutledge 19th, Nick Burke 20th, Will Lowe 28th, Corey Lynch 32nd, (35 Boats) Radial Rig – Christine Neville 7th, Kyle Larsen 8th, Lindsey Baab 10th, Lola Bushnell 14th, Calum Finlayson 19, Kris Swanson 21 (44 Boats)
The Richmond Yacht Club, 2011-2012 “Midwinter Series #1” got a bit lucky with the weather, the days leading up to the weekend were whipping gusts to 70 mph in the higher elevations with rain. Forecasts for the weekend were accurate, blistery on Saturday,
but light and variable on Sunday (race day,) then windy again on Monday. Talk about hit and miss. On race day Sunday the laser fleets drifted out to the South Hampton course in the nil southwesterly air with hopes that the later forecasted 15kt westerly might come early. One race was completed in the light southerly. Then around kickoff, (GO 49ERS,) the breeze indicators began fluctuating and soon the RC reset the course in the welcome freshening westerly. Two more races were completed, including a three lap with a reach leg, making 16 laser and 10 radial sailors happy, a fair turn out considering the light wind forecast kept some from coming. The top three finishers in both fleets all took a bullet keeping things tight for the next round. The series is on, one down three to go. Hope to see some more faces January 8th for #2. Full Rig: 1) Christine Neville; 2) Drake Jensen; 3) Emilio Castelli; 4) Roger Herbst; 5) Steve Hendricks; 6) Simon Bell; 7) Mike Bishop (16 Boats) Radial Rig: 1) Markus Suorsa; 2) Robbie Englehart; 3) Calum Finlayson; 4) Marina Fennell; 5) Michael Levy; 6) Colin Kermarec; 7) Sarah Lake (10 Boats)
Great News from the RYC! Mark Halman (Program Laser Coach/Instructor) has extended the Winter Series through Spring. There is a lot of interest and excitement for Laser sailing at RYC. Dan Brandt coached five girls: Sarah, Marina, Lauren, Charlotte and Grace-Ann for the Leiter Cup. Then Sam, Erika, Robbie, LB, David, Charlotte and Oliver joined me in a five-day 4.7 Laser clinic in August. These youths had a lot of fun. So we are going to add Laser Spring Training next year. Training will be on Sundays from March through early June. Spring should give us enough wind to make Laser sailing really exciting. Each day we plan to get video of each participant so that during the debriefing each person can see things they do well and also see skills to improve. We will also plan to travel to several local Laser regattas (Santa Cruz, Monterey and St. Francis). Three club boats are now available with Radial rigs for kids without a Laser who want to participate. As this is a new program this will be a pay-as-yougo: $20 for the day (morning coaching and afternoon racing), $10 for just the afternoon racing. I encourage adults to join us. Whether you are preparing for a serious season of racing or just testing out Laser sailing, you are welcome. The D24 has an impressive bunch of juniors filling the ranks, and because several major regattas were held in our district this year, several more juniors chose to try the laser experience, hence making the laser a boat of choice for them. Here are some reports from the D24 juniors PCISA High School Single Handed Championships and Cressy Championship Qualifier (Radial) 35 Boats competing 1st Kyle Larsen – 5th Lola Bushnell – 10th Lindsey Baab – 13th Lawson Willard – 20th Max Hamker – 22nd Haley Kardek – 24 Kris Swanson – 30th Will Dana Kyle went on to the Cressy Championship in October at the Chicago YC and placed 13th out of the 18 boat radial fleet.
