From the Commodore Dear Snipe Sailors,
The 2011 World‘s Championship’s in Rungsted – Denmark, was once again a demonstration of how strong, competitive and fantastic is our Snipe Class.
Despite world crisis, fifty nine crews from eighteen different countries competed in one of the most competitive, difficult and exciting World’s in recent times.
Congratulations to the new champions, Alexandre Tinoco and Gabriel Borges and to the Brazilian team that completely dominated this Championship giving us a great show of sailing skills, tactical resolution, temper and animation.“Amiguinho” and “Covinha” are also an example of commitment to follow, training hard to achieve this dream. In the junior’s we had a demonstration and confirmation of the talent that we have now and in the future of the Class.
Regarding our Organization and Management, we had two very productive Meetings, the NS and the Board Meeting.You will see in the minute’s reports in the following pages that we approve some important proposals and initiatives that will increase the activity and funning of our class. We approved to increase the number of entries in the Juniors and Seniors World’s. We also decided to increase the minimum weight of the Jib cloth, and to allow the use of a full top batten.
I also would like to highlight the presence of our values and our motto during this World’s, that are more and more one of our greatest strengths. There were many sailors fighting very close to putting all on the table top to reach their goals. Despite this pressure there was an atmosphere of respect and admiration between and for the top sailors that is not easy to find in events like these. Is also important to mention the presence of a large number of mixed crews, contributing strongly for our Serious Sailing..Serious Fun.
Concerning the Future, we should be adding more countries and encouraging growth at the fleet level.We need strong leadership (with international vision) at the Board level and dedicated, hard working National Secretaries Who have a flare for marketing. I truly believe we already have the expertise and if we work more together, as a team, our class will grow in numbers and in the spirit of “ Serious sailing, Serious fun”. We should all be proud of our organization, as it really is one of the finest dinghy class in the world today.

Around the Snipe World In Memoriam
Cliff Heinzerling
Cliff Heinzerling passed away August 23 and is forever part of Snipe history, as a teenager - crewing for brother Ralph on the winning Snipe in the 1942 Snipe World Championship in Detroit, MI as well as many other sailing achievements in Snipe Class competition during the years 1939-42. The Heinzerling “boys” - Ralph (skipper) and Cliff (crew, and skipper in some events) - made quite an impact on Snipe sailing during those days, winning many U.S. eastern region Snipe regattas and competing in the 1940-41-42 Snipe Worlds Championships and National Junior Championships. The US National Championship trophy is named after the Heinzerling Brothers in their honor.
Katsumi Hirata
Honorary Vice-Commodore Katsumi Hirata celebrated his 100th birthday in 2011 but passed away on July 3rd. Following his wishes, his ashes were dis-
persed at sea on August 20th with many sailors including JSAF honorary Commodore Mr.Yamazaki gathered at Seabonia in Kanagawa for his remembrance. Mr. Hirata was involved with so many Snipe events both as a competitor and jury member and will be fondly remembered and missed by all. Report of SCIRA East Europe
Polish SNIPE Association as leading in this part of Europe has organised several international regattas. In 2010 in Poznan, from wchich most of Polish SNIPE’s come from, there was oragnised Eastern European Cup (19 crews took place). In this year there was organised European Cup (20 crews took place). In 2010 we also organised International Polish Nationals and the winner there was Jan Peeters with Nathalie Jenssen from Belgium. In this year our International Polish Nationals are going to be held in 26-28 August 2011. Our efforts to promote SNIPE Class are focused on two points. First of all, we are trying to contact with our sail-friends from Russia and Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) by mutual correspondence. So far, the only confirmed contact come from Estonia.The correspondence to Russia remains still without the answer.What is more, we plan to organise in 2012 SNIPE East European Cup in Gdansk as the part of big sailor’s event Gdansk Sailing Days 2012. Proposed date of this regattas is 6-8 July 2012 and it is going to be held on Baltic Sea in Gdansk Bay.Accompanying events are going to be the old sailing ships gathering and many other events relating to sailing promotion. Geographical position of Gdansk and atractivness of this event give us a hope that a lot of our firends from Western and Eastern Europe will arrive and take place in this regatta.That is why we are very pleased to invite You, our dear friends, to participate in this wonderful regatta – SNIPE East European Cup 2012 in Gdansk (Dantzig). Second main point of our SNIPE Class promotion actvity are heavy efforts to create new dynamic SNIPE center in Poland in Swiebodzin. Due to Mr Zibi Rakocy efforts the worldwide producer of Cadet boats is trying to start SNIPE boats production there. Creation of new SNIPE’s producer in this part of Europe colud be a crucial moment for class development in Eastern Europe. We hope that next year colleagues from other East European countries will visit Poland and participate in our Polish regattas.

Snipe Worlds 2011: A Brazilian Sailing Lesson CAROL CRONIN
In twenty years of Snipe sailing, I’ve crewed in two Worlds (1993 and 2009). For 2011 I qualified as a skipper, with crew Kim Couranz.We really enjoyed the whole experience and came away newly impressed with the international depth and camaraderie of our “serious but fun” class. Here’s our take on the event.
With three teams on the podium, and all five teams in the top ten,Team Brazil certainly gave the rest of us a schooling in Snipe sailing.That said, they did it so graciously that it was hard to complain. And with such difficult racing, hosted by the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY) in Rungsted, Denmark, these sailors certainly earned the respect of their competitors. Fifty-nine boats from eighteen countries were on the starting line for what most expected to be a light air regatta.The real story was the unpredictable breeze.While the locals told us “It’s never like this here,” we saw everything from drifting to planing conditions—sometimes all in the same race. And the breeze blew from a completely different direction on three of the four race days.Teams were rewarded for keeping their eyes open, since it was often possible to spot massive wind lines before they filled. Temperatures were typical for northern Europe in August, but the rainfall was a bit more than normal. On day two we received 80 percent of the usual rain for the entire month of August.Which supplied another reason for the locals to tell us, “It’s never like this here.”
The sailing was also challenging because of the chop, which was always well ahead of whatever breeze was blowing. Denmark is not known for its beaches, and there is very little soft shoreline to absorb the waves of the Oresund. By day three it felt like we were sailing through the waves of the previous two days plus enjoying a fresh set from a different direction to top it all off.
Like all World Championships, the regatta was won long before the first gun. All-out hiking and repeatable fast rig settings were the only way to achieve Worlds-respectable speed, which meant both boat and bodies had to be prepared well in advance. For those of us chartering boats, boat prep was made all but impossible by sharing boats with the Junior Worlds (which ended the day before our practice race). Although it was light until after 9pm, there was seldom any wind by the time the Juniors were off the water. So training time was drastically reduced. But it was great to see the high caliber of racing from the Juniors, over a range of difficult conditions.

“steady 26, gusts to 36 knots.” They immediately postponed until 2pm, freeing teams to leave the area for lunch.With rain in the boat park, most of us chose to hang out inside and enjoy the free KDY wireless.
At 2pm, the start was postponed again, and again at 3pm. At 4pm conditions were deemed tolerable, and in fact a short lull teased many teams into changing back to light to medium settings and sails.This proved to be a mistake, since race one was sailed in a puffy, shifty, 15-29 knot westerly.The first bullet was taken by Spain’s Rayco Tabare/Gonzalo Morale, with Junichiro Shiraishi/Shinsei Ueda (JPN) finishing second. In 3rd and 4th lurked Team Brazil’s Alexandre Paradeda/Gabriel Kielin and Alexandre Tinoco/Gabriel Borges.
On day two (the one with 80 percent of the August rainfall) we completed three races in 8-14 knots and were back on shore again by 415pm, the time we’d left the dock to race the day before! All day the breeze filled and ebbed from both sides, and nobody got it completely right. Mario Urban/Rafael Sapucai moved into the lead with a 11, 1, 11; the first race was won by Rayco Tabares/ Gonzalo Morales from Spain, who finished 22nd in the second race but still
moved into 2nd overall.Tinoco/Borges fell to 7th with a 3, 31. Bruno Bethlem de Amori/Dante Bianchi (BRA) won the last race of the day after a 19, 12 to start.
Day 3 started out with beautiful sunshine and an 8-10 knot breeze that tempted us into leaving the dock early. Much to our dismay, we were called back into the harbor by a race official who said something about a Snipe being stolen.The true story was that one of the Spanish teams’ passports had been stolen, so racing had been postponed for one hour to permit a trip to the embassy. (No, really.) We stood around in our wetsuits, wishing we were out enjoying the perfect breeze.
By the time we left the dock it had built to about 12 knots, but that proved to be short-lived; by the end of the first race, which was won by Bruno Bethlem de Amoriit/Dante Bianchi, the breeze was back down to 6-7 knots. And the thick clouds had moved in again, dropping the temperatures. The race committee managed to fit in one more race before the breeze became too unstable, though back on shore many talked about trying to have the day’s second race (with its 30 degree right shift on the middle beat) thrown out.Though this was the most radical shift of the week, it was not the only time a line of fresh breeze dominated one side of the course.
Day 4:With only six races on the scoreboard, the race committee changed the schedule to permit 3 races.Though it made for a long day, there were no complaints; the breeze built to 16 knots and we had our first reaching of the week.Team Brazil showed their speed off the wind, and with the championship secure Tinoco/Borges were able to sit out the last race. Sharing the first and second spots in the final two races, Paradeda/Kieling and Bethlem/Bianchi more than earned the respect of the rest of the fleet for their podium positions. 6

75th Briody Regatta, New York
Seventy-five years ago, the first Briody Memorial Regatta was held at Olcott Yacht Club. During the previous year, Francis M. Briody had died of spinal meningitis at the age of 43, and his fellow Snipe sailors dedicated this regatta to his memory. His son James and grandson Tom and their wives honored us with their presence at the 2011 Briody Memorial Regatta, held at Newport Yacht Club in Rochester, NY, on August 20-21. Jno and Karen Disch won the regatta conclusively, finishing first in four of the races. Chris Hains and John Kislinger were second. Charlie Courtsal and Jay Perena were third and the highest finishing local team. Sixteen boats competed: seven from the host club, six from Canada, and one each from Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio.
Luck and skill determined the results, as they always do. For example, just after Jno and Karen rounded the first windward mark, a big power boat wake boosted them from behind and hit everyone else head-on, virtually stopping them.They won the race by 45 seconds. Of course, such luck only helps if you have the skill to get to the mark first. Essentially everyone in the Snipe fleet contributed to the success of the event, but five people merit special thanks: PRO Bill Topping, Harbormaster Bill Vaughn, Race Chairs Charlie Courtsal and Dan Groth, and Food Chair Rosemary Dahl.
For people who had not visited Newport YC lately, the remodeled clubhouse was a treat. The remodeling tells a lot about the spirit of the club, as it was accomplished by Saturday morning we had two races in a shifty southerly, then our trademark thermal came in for two more races twenty-person Saturday work parties during in the afternoon, a nice, steady northerly. Sunday our the winter and spring of four years. ect included a new kitchen and restrooms and — wait for it — hot showers. Work stopped each spring when the sailing season began.
Irondequoit Bay is a magical place. Mink scurry along our seawall in the afternoon and sometimes a great blue heron flies in and perches majestically on the dock of his choice. Our dozens of swans mostly stay far away, but occasionally an elegant pair swims close by. Life is good.

2011 Polish Junior and Master Championships RAFAL ZAKRZEWSKI The 26th-30th August 2011 can be called ‘SNIPE weekend’ at the Kierskie Lake in Poznan, Poland.Traditionally, during these 5 days everybody there sailed on SNIPEs. From Friday till Sunday Polish Masters took place. This year all participants came from Poland, because our friends from neighbouring countries were ‘taking a rest’ after wonderful World Champs in Dennmark. The weather was beautiful, but it changed a lot, with the temperature 19-34ºC and good wind.The fight on the water last till the last race but once again our best Polish team won – Piotr Mańczak and Karol Zielonka. The second place belong to Dawid Marczak and Bartosz Pędzyński and the third to the sensation of the regatta the couple of Szymon and Sylwia Polaczyk.As usual, on Saturday there was a pleasant picnic organized by ŻLKS Club and Zibi Rakocy. On Monday sailed our SNIPE Juniors and strong competition among them surprised numerous observers.The wind was strong, sometimes even to strong for young light competitors. 16 junior teams took part and 7 long distanced races took place.Among the competitors there were winners of international, European and Polish Championships in Cadet, Europe and Laser classes. A leader team was changing every race. Finally, after fascinating fight won the team Błażej Przygórzewski and Agnieszka Wiercińska before last year winners Szymon Wierzbicki and Natalia Wierzbicka and the team Arkadiusz Dobrzyński and Wiktoria Kocoń. Worth attention is high sailing level and prefect organization of the regatta. Because of Junior’s high interest in SNIPE sailing, Polish SNIPE Association plans to organize Polish Junior Championships in open international formula next year. 2011 US National Championships - Diaz/Tocke Win Again DON HACKBARTH
The USA Snipe Sailing Class held its National Championship Series this past week at the North Cape Yacht Club on Lake Erie in Monroe Michigan. 38 Teams participated in the 5 day, 10 race event. Many of the competitors remarked that ‘the sailing was great; Lake Erie delivered allowing us to complete the Series ahead of schedule in winds of 7-14K throughout the week’. It has been a long time since such beautiful sailing conditions were experienced at the traditional mid summer event.Teams of all ages and genders participated. Some sailors over 70 yrs, women’s teams, father child, spouses, all enjoyed the sailing, food, beer, games and friendship during the week. The Preliminary Series (The Crosby) was won by the young adult team of Brian Kamilar and Enrique Quintero from Miami with Past World Champion and current USA National Champs Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke of Miami taking second on a tie breaker over the team of Ernesto Rodriquez and David Williford. The finishing places in the Prelims is carried as a race score into the Championship Series (Heinzerling).
Diaz/Tocke took control of the event at this point winning 4 of the six races and throwing out a third place finish. Kamilar/Qunitero also sailed a great combined series and won a tacking duel with Rodriguez/Williford in the last beat of the last race to take second overall.

There were 3 all women’s teams participating and the top team was Carol Cronin and Kim Couranz in 7th place. The
top parent sailing with this child as crew was Henry and Christian Filter in 9th and the top married couple was Chris and Antoinette Klotz finishing in 10. The top skipper over 70 was the long time Snipe Sailor (60 years+) Jerry Thompson with Mandi Smith crewing in 15th place. We
were all very happy to see Jerry and Mandi sail a great Championship Series,We had 2 skippers sailing with their 9 yr old children.
Unfortunately no photos were sent in of the US Nationals, but we did receive this great photo of a refurbished Mills #8653 by Joe Norton owned by Hal Gilreath, formerly owned by his father, SCIRA Commodore Harold Gilreath, author of “How to Build a Plywood Snipe.” Hal frequently sails 8653 with his daughter Emily in Florida.
Regatta Co-Chairs Terry Timm and Leslie Hill with PRO Dave Schaffer and his RC Team along with the many NCYC volunteers made this a most enjoyable Nationals.

10° German Open Championship 2011 and Regatta Duca di Genova

Together with the German and the Italian Scira, the sailing club Ass.VELICA Trentina, at the Lake of Caldonazzo (most northern part of Italy, in the mountains nearby Austria), already since 2002 is organizing the German Open (national and international championship of Germany). This year, together with the “german - middleeuropean” event, the VELICA, in agreement with the Scira Italy, included (Saturday and Sunday) also the Regatta Duca di Genova (the final Italian ranking list for the participations at the World Championship in Denmark) in the same regatta. Friday 17th of June, at 12.00 opening ceremony with the hymns and
national flags. After the lunch with specifically imported german food, 40 boats (POL – GER – ITA) are starting for the two programmed races with a good wind. In the afternoon further boats are incoming from the northeast (Trieste) and the central (Rome) part of Italy, in the evening a big dinner (italian specialities, prepared in the kitchen of the Velica) with a lot of white and red wine (sponsor Cantina Isera/TN) and songs with classic guitar. Saturday, after the light lunch, 51 boats started for the third and forth race. A lot of wind, partially more than 30 kn from lightly changing directions and a break of some hours, waiting for better weather conditions. Only two from the three foreseen races could be effected.
In the evening, coming out from lake polish beer (brought by Zibi Rakocy, European Secretary), than big dinner, with the famous roast suckling pig (started on his spit in the morning at 9.30 am), newly with a lot of white and red wine (sponsor Cantina Isera/TN). As second dessert ricotta (soft italian cheese), honey and Grappa a/o Caribbean Rum …… and music with dancing. Sunday, finally a lot of sun, but consequently not much wind. After the light lunch, warning signal at 12.55 am, the boats are outgoing, and around 3.00 pm the first race will start with a wind about 6 m/sec.The second race will start at 4.30 pm. Price giving ceremony in the evening, with trophies and gifts for every boat. More than 50% of the Snipe’s in the two fleets of Velica (totally 33 boats) participated at the Regatta, sign that the basis working in the club (starting since the year 2000) is starting to giving the desired results.
We are proud that the Italian Secretary Alberto Perdisa has named our lake the “Snipe Lake of Italy”, the European Secretary Zbigniew Rakocy already promised to participate also next year and the German Secretary Guenther Hautmann announced also the date of the next German Open 2012 which shall happen the 1st – 3rd of June. We hope that in 2012 further crew (coming from Belgium and other nations) will have pleasure to participate at this regatta and we can assure that the SERIOUS SAILING – SERIOUS FUN will be granted also next year.

The championship was everything perfect, good competitors including the new world champs MarioTonoco and his crew “coveiro” in Denmark; Rafael Gagliotti and Henrique Gomes, the Southamerican Champs , Paulo Santos and Rodrigo Inácio, Master’s World champs and sailors from fleets from Salvador, Florianopolis, Sao Paulo, Rio, Antonina, Aracaju, and Niteroi came to compete, Serious Sniping, Serious fun!!! We had good food , pizza, Churrasco(barbecue), during these days...and also good “cerveja” too...
We were only able to complete 3 races because the winds did not cooperate too much but all the races were very difficult, technical and long legs, like a good race should be. Swedish National Championships 2011 The regatta was arranged by Oxelösund SS on the Swedish east coast 80 km south of Stockholm on the 2nd to 4th of September.The racing was sched-
uled to start at 15.00 on Friday the 2nd, but unfortunately the wind didn´t fill in.The sailing committee made one attempt to start but during the first beat to windward a 180 degree windshift came and after that the wind dropped completely so the race was cancelled and the sailors were called back ashore.
On Saturday we waited ashore for a few hours until the wind started to fill in and the sailors were called offshore.The sailing committee managed to get 3 races in during Saturday afternoon and the wind grew a bit stronger for every race. It was early evening before we arrived back in the harbour.When everyone was ashore and all our precious Snipes were covered up for the night, we were called to the clubhouse. Inside the clubhouse the club treated us with a nice regattadinner.The most exciting thing was that during the dinner we could celebrate Mats Göthlin for his hard to beat record in Snipe Swedish Championships, Mats have now made 50 championships I a row. Congratulations to you Mats and see you next year! On Sunday the wind was up from the beginning and gusting over 10 m/s.The young crew of Lucas Örn and Axel Edwall in their very fast Skipper Snipe was almost unstoppable during the day and got 2 bullets and a 2 for their scoresheet.This was enough to crown them Swedish Champions 2011.The silver went to Per and Simon Edwall, the team thereby also won the Master division.The bronze went to last year Champion Björn Sandberg sailing together with Magnus Sjögren. Congratulations to you all! Next year we will sail our Swedish Championship on the west coast again, hope to see many of you there.

Piada Trophy 2011 LUIS SOUBIE
Cervia, 1st - 3rd July
In a sign near the restaurant at Circolo Amici della Vela Cervia there was a note saying “if you ever need a regatta to remind you why you sail a snipe, then attend to Piada Trophy”. I didn’t get it the first time a read that, but when I got down the podium with my prize in my hand and my smile in my face I read it again and I totally got into it.
Piada was everything everybody told me about it excepting the wind, wich was so much better than I was told. It was a good chance for me to meet old friends from the class and to make new ones, from countrys we never visited like Croatia and Poland. The Regatta has the perfect balance between serious sailing and serious fun, the races were perfect, long and difficult, with nice 8 to 16 knots all the 3 days. The race committee was perfect and the jury was bored ! In land, the go kart race was something different to do, we have an excellent dinner party with bingo included on Saturday night and wonderfull hand made prizes for the winners. All in all a fantastic experience wich I hope we will be able to repeat in the future. In a personal matter I want to thank the friends who made this possible to us, getting us home or finding us a good boat, so this is for Alberto Perdisa, Pietro Fantoni, Enrico Solerio and Giovanni Ceccarelli.Thank you guys !!!!! See you next year !!!

European Cup ALICJA NEYMAN
The three-day regatta took place on the Kiekrz Lake near Poznan, Poland. It was organized by the Yacht Club PKM LOK, Poznan. The wind in each of the three days was quite remarkable between 13-21 knots, from W. IN the regatta participated 20 crews, including 3 from Belgium. The Kiekrz Lake, where the Cup was held, despite it looks inconspicuous; it is a difficult lake to sail. Wind in here is very shifty and gusty. The organizers were very pleased with the participation of all sailors and also with those who came from Belgium to attend the regatta. Jan Peeters and Nathalie Janssens were guests at the regatta in Poland not for the first time. In last year they took part in the Polish Nationals which they won. Relentless and tight battle was between the winners – Jan and Nathalie – and with the crew on the second place – Piotry Manczak and Karol Nielonka. Jan and Nathalie won three- point lead- congratulations! Third place was for Dries Crombe and Joris Crombe. We count on the revenge next year.

Zbyszek Rakocy and Rafal Zakrzewski organized on Friday evening the sightseeing tour around Poznan for our friends from Belgium. On Saturday evening all the sailors met on already traditional party which was organized by the main sponsor of the regatta – the producer of the water Zywieczdroj and also by Zbyszek Rakocy. There were traditional performances and dances. The evening passed for al lin good and friendly atmosphere, despite the exhaustion and tiredness after 6 races in which 3 were in the winds of 21 knots.
On Sunday only one race was held in the slightly lighter wind. Finally during the prizegiving ceremony the weather was sunny and much better after three days of rain.The organizers hope that all three days of races were satisfactory and will be good memory to all participants. The Polish Snipe sailors count on the rematch in the next year with even more crews from abroad. This regatta was run according to the motto “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun”®.
