President’s Report BY ANDY ROY I’m a bit late on getting this issue’s article in by the deadline. I was all set to write it last weekend, but I jumped on a last minute opportunity to travel to Bermuda to watch the first four races of the America’s Cup. Lots of fun and quite a spectacle; however, and as many sailors have been asking, is that really sailing as we all know it? The foiling machines certainly have an incredible “wow” factor and it’s intriguing, cutting edge technology. But I think many sailors around the globe would love to see the AC get back to racing in monohulls, more countries being able to afford participation, with sails going up and down, crew grinding in sails and not hydraulic pressure, more than one turn in the starting sequence, tacking & gybing duels, and the list goes on. In the last issue of The Laser Sailor I mentioned that I had been informed at the time by Laser Performance that they’ll be getting caught up on the lack of parts supply situation (sails, new top sections, blades, etc.). That did not happen in any significant way over the past several months, which has certainly been disappointing to sailors, dealers and the Class in general. Once again, however, we have been informed quite recently by LP that the supply situation is being improved. In discussions, however, with several NA Laser dealers, I have not received that concurrence, so we can only hope this indeed turns out to be the case.

The summer regatta schedule is of course in full swing, with our top event, the North Americans, getting underway next week in Vancouver. Knowing the folks out on the left coast, I know it will be a great event. The North American Championships for Masters sailors is being held at Buffalo Canoe Club (near Niagara Falls), August 25-27. BCC is an excellent regatta host, and the sailing conditions on Lake Erie are typically superb at that time of year. The Open Standard Worlds and the Laser Masters World Championships will be held successively in Split, Croatia in September. Right now there are 336 entries for the Masters Worlds, including an impressive 61 entries from Canada and the U.S. In the Open Worlds there are currently 19 NA sailors registered in the fleet of about 130. Have a great summer of Laser sailing!

Equipment Update BY ANDY ROY As some of you (hopefully all Class members) have seen, we are in a voting period for several Laser Class rule changes (link). Probably the most signiďŹ cant and eagerly anticipated rule change is the move to allow the use of a digital magnetic compass. I was kindly given the opportunity to test such a compass developed by Nautalytics (http://nautalytics.com/). This compass is made in the USA, and here’s a picture of the unit I tested when I was at the ACC’s in Wrightsville Beach, NC in May. The digits are very easy to read, even with sunglasses, and no problem reading the digits when hiked out (120 degree viewing cone). The numbers do not jump around (good dampening builtin), even in wavy conditions. The unit is slightly lighter in weight compared to the CarbonParts card compass that many top Laser sailors have been using over the past couple years. The digital unit is solar powered, and the price is essentially the same as the leading traditional Laser compasses. A Nautalytics representative informed me that their upcoming model will have an integral timer where the countdown reverts to heading readout at the starting signal, thus eliminating the need for a timer on the mast. I believe the TackTic Microcompass has a similar feature (http://www. raymarine.eu/). After trying this compass I am fairly certain many Laser sailors will want to get one should the rule change go through. I hope all members take the opportunity to vote on all the rule changes.

SUMMER 2017

#sportsmanship - one thing I’ve learned from playing competitive sports my whole life is that getting upset doesn’t make you any better, it doesn’t win games, it doesn’t help your score, it doesn’t make you sail faster. It does quite the opposite, it almost always hurts your performance regardless of the sport! Getting upset is a lose lose. So it happens. you get fouled on the course.. https://youtu.be/s_SWgKhwua0?t=57s You are boat A, Boat B textbook fouls you. what do you do? Protest boat B - “Protest” is the simplest way to ask a boat to spin. It says two things, it says 1. I feel you broke a rule and think you should spin 2. I’m willing to take this to protest if you don’t spin. it’s not a personal thing, protests help us all become better sailors and without them we wouldn’t have the rules we have today. Read the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Protests First step, inform the other boat you’re protesting with a hail “Protest boat B#” (Hail is required by RRS). Any additional words besides “Protest boat B#” are unnecessary and likely to hurt your boat speed. Can you argue and sail fast? I sure can’t. Next, the other boat can either exonerate by doing a spin (360 in our fleet) or continue sailing with a high likely hood of being disqualified (DSQ) in a protest hearing. Doing a spin is always better than getting a DSQ boat B. If the boat you protested doesn’t spin as soon as reasonably possible, then it’s time to notify Race Committee you intend to file a protest against boat B. (also a required step) The protest will go to a hearing upon returning to shore. After you hail “Protest boat B#” - Keep sailing!!! A protest is NOT a finish!!! (unless there’s major damage or injury) You’re still in the race! Sail fast and focus on the race! Lastly, focus on having a good day, if someone is yelling at you, sail faster! Have fun and keep it friendly, my goal is that everyone sailing is a better sailor at the end of the day! Race Committee: See you sailing! Sincerely, AJ Sorensen #204092

Regatta Reports Atlantic Coast Championships BY ANDY ROY

The 2017 Laser Atlantic Coast Championships was

hosted by the fabulous folks at Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, NC, May 6-7, 2017. The 95 entrants, across Standard, Radial and 4.7 fleets, were treated to champagne conditions, ranging from 17-22 knots on Saturday and 10-15 knots on Sunday. The race committee, led by Laser (and Finn and big boat) legend, Tom Lihan, did a flawless job in running 3 races each day. The event saw a nice spread of juniors, open and masters sailors, including 3 Great Grand Master competitors, and everyone was treated to superb southern hospitality from the CYC hosts. Thanks to Arland and Chip Whitesides for once again putting on a tremendous Laser event at CYC. ACC Final Results 4.7 fleet top 5

Midwinters West It was a Radial Fleet showdown at California Yacht Club. How well do you know the scoring tie breaking rules? Joseph Hou and Gage Wilson had scores that tested that knowledge. Nine races were sailed over three days for the Laser Standard and Radials Fleets. Paul Didham ran away with the Standard fleet win. Recap of Day 1: March 24, 2017 by Regatta Chair Sue Service California Yacht Club is excited to have 81 boats competing in the 2017 Laser Midwinters West, including competitors from Mexico, Canada, and the east coast of the US. The first day of the regatta was sailed in “champagne” sailing conditions. The day started off sunny, and warm, with breeze of about 6 knots from 240 degrees. Before long the wind built to 12-15 knots, and PRO Tom O’Conor was able to get off three great races for each fleet. The Laser Standard Fleet had 32 boats competing, and leading the fleet is Paul Didham from MBYC with three bullets, followed by Peter Hurley from Mantoloking YC in New York with 11 points, and Ian Elliot from Royal Victoria YC in Canada with 15 points. Forty-nine boats are entered in the Laser Radial Fleet. Joseph Hou from NHYC is at the top of the leaderboard with just 4 points, followed by Gage Wilson from Edison Sailing Center with 7 points and Maura Dewey from Royal Victoria YC with 13 points. Regatta Previews Masters North American Championships Buffalo Canoe Club August 25-27, 2017

Buffalo Canoe Club should be on every Laser sailor’s bucket list. The Setting: When the glaciers of the Ice Age receded from the North East

end of Lake Erie they left behind a dingy sailor’s paradise called Abino Bay. The shape of the bay is perfect for sailing because it allows for progressively more exposure to stronger wind and larger waves as you sail out from the protection of Point Abino. As an extra bonus you sail on fresh water that is both warm and crystal clear.

The Wind: The fetch of Lake Erie extends 350 kilometers (220 miles) to the south-west from Abino Bay. On most days in the summer a thermal induced lake breeze is generated from the SW. The prevailing wind is also from the West. Being aligned in the same direction they augment each other and often build to a velocity that makes for exciting racing.

The Venue: In 1882 Buffalo Canoe Club (BCC) was founded and located deep in the protected corner of Abino Bay. It is in a very favorable location for rigging and going out and returning under sail. The club has paid homage to this natural wonder of the sailing world by constructing world class facilities and developing championship worthy race management. The racing lore of BCC is legendary. We know that most Master Laser Sailors travel to regattas alone because at most venues there is nothing for friends and family to do. Not so at BCC. This is a summer destination resort that has lots of facilities and activities for adults and children of all ages to enjoy.

The Vista: When you arrive at BCC and park your car you’re view of the waterfront will be obscured by two large buildings. Just for fun I strongly recommend that you walk up the brick pathway between them. Think of this narrow opening as a camera’s view finder that as you walk up the path gradually expands your view into a wider angle. It is the best way to experience the magnificent vista of the waterfront and our iconic boathouse. The Feel: You are home. You are among people who understand your passion for sailing and all of that go along with it. They get you and you get them. As a result you will experience a feeling of comfort and fellowship.

The Location: Don’t let the name fool you Buffalo Canoe Club is actually located in Ontario, Canada. It’s about 20 minutes from the Peace Bridge at the Canada/USA border. District Reports District 1 Claire Sears NB/NS Hello Everyone, Things are already busy for District 1 Laser sailors; many have hit the water for training & racing. The season kicked off with the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron’s annual Spring Dinghy Regatta. Eight races were run over two days with Luke Ruitenberg taking home the title in the Laser Standard fleet and Spencer Dalzell as the runner-up. The radial class winner was Ryan Anderson followed by Ben George. Sophie Hollet was first female and third overall. This event was closely followed by a high performance radial camp held in St. Margaret’s Bay. The training was organized by Olympic coach Lisa Ross and 2016 Olympian Brenda Bowskill with four days of good sailing (and fitness) working on a variety of skills. There are lots of events around the region this summer. The dates for the usual line-up can be found on the Sail Nova Scotia or Sail New Brunswick websites. The D1 Championships this year will be hosted by the Bay Wind Regatta at St Margaret Sailing Club. Sail East will take place at the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club in Saint John. Hope to see you all out on the water!

District 2, Quebec, Canada Philippe Dormoy Bonjour everyone, Spring has been very special this year! There was water flooding in many places and the season has been delayed by a full month because on this. We could go on the St. Laurence river for safety reasons and big boats launch was only a week ago. We had our district regatta June 17th and 18th . This year we made it an open event and we had 19 participants. This regatta is also called Ian Bruce Memorial regatta as a tribute to him Results are posted on page 18 of this issue. The overall winner was John Harris who sailed really well in the light wind on Saturday with three bullets! Second place and third place, Nicolas and Philippe young guns It was a very fun and tight regatta with a good mix of Masters and young guns very talented. We hope to have more participants next year. The trophy is really nice and the yacht club hospitality is 1st class.

District 3 Nigel Heath Ontario After a cold and damp spring, the sailing season in Ontario has kicked into high gear with a schedule packed with events. In case you haven’t figured it out already, all our scheduling info is now also available on Facebook under d3laser, as well as d3laser.com. We will likely have to amend the prizes for the Fogh Gold Cup series this year due to the unreliable supply

22

of new sails provided to Fogh Marine. Unfortunately this situation is beyond Fogh’s control, but the good news is that they have promised to make it up with other great gifts for the winners, in addition to the gift certificates that the District provides to Fogh Marine. The Water Rats Sailing Club recently held its Heinz Gebauer Spring War regatta. The event started with a whimper on Saturday with no wind, but ended with a bang with great winds on Sunday and many sailors commenting that Sunday was their best sail of the year so far. Top five sailors in the laser fleet were as follows 1) Ray Davies 2) Chris Van Rossem 3) Nigel Heath 4) Steve Philips 5) Pat Wachholz. Sorry I couldn’t get my hands on the Radial results. Congrats to all. Sail fast

District 4 Brigitte Smutny Manitoba The season in Manitoba is in full swing. After a nice warm up at the Laser short course regatta at Blackstrap Lake in SK in May, the Canada Summer Games Laser and Radial Qualifiers are scheduled for June 11 and 18. Our Games team will then be travelling to the Laser North Americans and Waves in Vancouver. After a high performance Laser camp from July 11-14 with coach Dominic Fritz from Vancouver, RLWYC will be hosting Sail West on July 15/16. The Canada Summer Games will be hosted by Gimli YC from July 27 – August 4. Lots of development camps are offered for the month of June, July and August. The Laser District 4 Championships will be sailed on July 15/16 at RLWYC. For more information visit our website www.sailmanitoba.com

District 5 Mark Lammens Saskatchewan Connor Boyle won the Spring Short course, Kayden Polachek 2nd and LP Gagnon 3rd. Molly Ingenmey wins the Radial, Nick Langhorne is 2nd, Christie Lammens 3rd. In other news, D-5 veteran Phil Paxton took a nasty spill with some heavy equipment and broke many bones. He spent a lot of time in the hospital. All of us hope for a speedy recovery for Phil and that he gets back in those laser foot straps.

District 6 Andy Hunt BC Greetings to all District 6 sailors, volunteers and coaches. Now that the spring and summer months have arrived, more and more sailors are getting out on the water (either training or racing) and the active District 6 Laser schedule is in full operational mode. Weekend and evening racing have been on-going and there has been quite a few local regattas. Six sailors from the Jericho Sailing Centre took part in some informal racing on March 19 at races organized by the Kitsilano Yacht Club. Three races were run in light easterlies. Tony Martin was first with 7 points. Bob Ennenberg was second (9 points) and Jacek Suski was third (11 points). Fourth, fifth and sixth went to Peter Woytkowiak (12 points), Tim Murphy (15 points) and Jorge L Yanez (21 points). The first regatta of the 2017 BC Sailing Circuit was the Kitten

Cup Regatta. This regatta is held on the third or fourth weekend in April and is hosted by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. This year, it was on April 22 and 23. There were 30 Laser Radials, 10 Laser Standards and 2 Laser 4.7s. Easterly winds prevailed both days and the wind was a little stronger near English Bay beach than further west out by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. The race committee ran four races on Saturday and either 4 races (Radials and 4.7s) or 5 races (Laser Standards) on Sunday. The top five Laser Radials were: Owen Timms, SYC, 12.00; Maura Dewey, RVICYC, 16.00; Luke Ramsay (yes, that Luke Ramsay), RVANYC, 23.00; Christopher (Kit) Stoll, SYC, 27.00; Alec Coleman, WVYC, 40..00. The top three Laser Standards were: John Owen, RVICYC, 16.00; Benjie McMaster, RVANYC, 19.00; Jorge L Yanez, JSCA, 20.00. Benjie has moved from the Laser Radial to the Laser Standard (quite successfully, I might add). The two Laser 4.7s were Adrian Conn, Squamish Yacht Club and Deirdre Webster, JSCA. Adrian had 8 points and Deirdre had 12 points. Two weeks later, there were two regattas, one on Vancouver Island and one on the lower mainland. The Vancouver Island regatta was the second regatta of the BC Sailing Circuit and was hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and was the Spring Dinghy Championships. The afore mentioned Kitten Cup Regatta and the Spring Dinghy Championships were used to determine who would represent BC in the Laser Standard Class (Male) and the Laser Radial Class (Female) in the upcoming 2017 Canada Summer Games. I have been unable to find any details about the Spring Dinghy Championships but I believe that the wind was on the light side and there were about 7 or so races run over the two days whch were May 6 and 7. If I am wrong about the regatta, I apologize. There were 23 Laser Radials and 10 Laser Standards. The top five Laser Radials were: Maura Dewey, RVICYC; Alec Coleman, WVYC; Alex Cherniavskii, WVYC; Makena Shepard, RVICYC and Matthew Stranagahan, WVYC. The top three Laser Standards were Max Gallant, John Owen and Bob Britten. All three sailors came from the RVICYC. Congratulations are in order for John Owen and Makena Shepard. They will be the BC representatives at the 2017 Canada Summer Games. The Spring Dinghy Championships was the second regatta of the BC Sailing Circuit. Due to some unforseen circumstances, the Flights of Spring Regatta was hosted by the Jericho Sailing Centre and the Jericho Laser Fleet on the same weekend as the Spring Dinghy Championships. Due to this unfortunate conflict, there were only eight Laser Standards and one Laser Radial (they all started together) at the regatta. All of the sailors were from the Jericho Sailing Centre. The weather was quite nice, cloudy with sunny periods and winds of between 5 and 9 knots. The race committee ran 8 races, four each day. The top three sailors were Jorge Yanez (12), Andriy Kanyuka (18) and Tim Murphy (19). The Central Okanagan Sailing Association hosted their annual Springtime Regatta on May 20 and 21. Eleven Laser Standards and fourteen Laser Radials participated in the regatta. The BC Laaer Master Championships were part of the Springtime Regatta. All of the Laser Standards were masters and they came from BC and Alberta. The Laser Radial sailors came from all over BC. The Springtime Regatta was also part of the BC Sailing Circuit. Five races were run over the two days of the regatta. After applying the Master Handicap system, Peter Macdougal

SUMMER 2017

(GGM) won the regatta with 9 points. Baha Akin (GM) was second with 11 points and Macej Mamon (A) was third with18 points. The top four Laser Radial sailors were: Alec Coleman, WVYC, 6.00; Alex Cherniaviskii, WVYC, 6.00; Bryana van Leeuwen, COSA, 13.00 and Zane Halperin, COSA, 15.00. The final regatta was the annual Jericho Classic Regatta. This regatta was held at the Jericho Sailing Centre on June 3 and 4. Light easterly winds combined with mistakes made by the race committee and the volunteers on the Mark Set boat resulted in only two races being run on June 3. As a method to test both the course itself and the race committee for the 2017 Laser, Laser Radial and Laser North American Championships, a test event for both parties was held on June 4. The results from the racing on June 3 were combined with the results of the test event to determine an overall winner for the Laser Standards and Laser Radials. The test event was held just far enough away as to not interfere with the other classes racing in the Jericho Classic. There were 11 Laser Standards and 6 Laser Radials racing on the weekend. Jorge Yanez (his name is becoming familiar) won the event with 6 points. Second, third and fourth place finishers all had 16 points. After applying the tie-breaking system, Tony Martin emerged as the second place finisher, Sasha Smutny was third and Justin Hall was fourth. With the exception of Jay Leon (Seattle), all of the Laser Standard sailors came from the Jericho Sailing Centre. The six Laser Radial sailors came from JSCA, RVANYC and WVYC.. The top Radial sailor was Matthew Stranagaha (WVYC) with 5 points. Second place went to Kai Rozitits (RVANYC) with 6 points and third place went to Deidre Webster (JSCA) with 12 points. Jorge also won the overall Jericho Classic Trophy. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions and / or comments. Thanks,

District 7 Chris Bollinger, Christine Neville, Scott Pakenham New England Hello and greetings from District 7 Or as we call it New England!! Frostbite results!!! Newport Laser Fleet 413- After 19 weeks, 105 other competitors, and a possible 114 individual races, even with canceling 3 days due to weather, Peter Shope showed yet again why he is Fleet 413’s golden child!! If you kept his discard days you could have placed in the top 5. Bridesmaid Steve Kirkpatrick led a list of who’s’ who in Laser history to hold onto 2nd spot. Andy Pimental, Christine Neville, Marc Bear, Ed Adams, Dan Neri, Will Donaldson, Dave Moffat, and Bob Kinsman hold down 3rd to 10th spots. For the 2017/18 season Fleet 413 will have 3 loaner boats available and will continue to sail out of Sail Newport. Please come and visit. Cedar Point Yacht Club- Lawrence McGrath, Britt Hughes, and Jean-Yves Fillion went 1,2,3 for the series which is posting 92 races over 16 days? Is that right? That is awesome!!! After a winter that was fairly decent for frostbiters our Districts’ season kicked off as usual with the Newport Laser Fleet 413 Pete Milnes Memorial regatta. While all sailors were sent home with awesome Helly Hansen Tech shirts and bellies full of burgers and beer, only the elite could take home the trophy. Steve Kirkpatrick edged out World Champ Peter Shope to take home the newly

found lost Milnes Cup!!! A total of 53, yes 53 boats competed 7 races in the no throwout series, run by Fleet PRO Moose McClintock!! Sailors came from such faraway places as Canada, Virginia, New York City, and East Greenwich. Fleet 413 would like to thank Sail Newport for the Host Venue, Helly Hansen for the shirts, Team One Newport for the Printing, IYAC for beverages all season, Dynamic Dollies and Intensity Sails for additional support! Their next event will be the Fat Boys Regatta due sometime in October. Next on our schedule was the 7th Installment of the Connecticut River Dingy Distance Race. A multiclass event that races down the Connecticut river to the Pettipaug Yacht club. A handful of Lasers set out on a cruise up river for the start in a calm 10 knots dead astern, as most of the fleet neared the starting line at Eagle Landing State Park they were greeted with the rising breeze of 25 knots!!! After a brief postponement, the event was cancelled as the breeze buried the needles with gusts in the 30’s!! A few brave souls soldiered on down river to the Club where they were greeted with cold Narraganset Lagers and a fantastic meal prepared by Chef Dave Courant!! The Cedar Point Regatta saw a battle of ages as Grand Master Jean-Yves Fillion went 2-1 for 1st place against Junior Richie Gordon’s 1-2. As all masters know the tie goes to the eldest!! Charles Stanley, Jeff Beckwith, Lawrence McGrath, and Amnon Gitelson rounded out 3rd to 6th as the master class continued to dominate!! Only 2 races were held as the wind gods unleashed their fury once again topping 30 knot figures!! The Massapoag Yacht Club had their annual Spring event which drew 6 boats, Brandon Dickerman topped Sean Guinness and Chris Stow for honors, in the 6 race series. The District 7 Championships came early this season at the Wickford Regatta in beautiful Rhode Island, which boasts to have over 400 miles of coastline. Sa weet! Daniel Petovic finished 1, 1, 2 the last 3 races to tie with Lawrence McGrath, having 3 2nd places in previous races handed him the win and the title of 2017 District 7 Full rig Champion. McGrath, Preston Duclos, Bill Dickey, and Nicholas Burroughs went to 5th place of the 14 registrants. Connor Harding went for a perfect score to win the Radial division with 6 Bullets in 7 races….his throwout? Yeah another Bullet!! Brad Seferian went all 2’s for second before the mortals kicked in at 3rd place with Timothy Danilek, 4th place, Alaxander Runci, and 5th place James Paul. A few D-7 sailors made their way to the Masters ACC event at Surf City Yacht club in New Jersey. Beautiful weather and wind greeted 45 sailors with both full and radial sails. Newt Wattis said it was a great place to sail and he was correct! In the full rigs, Scott Pakenham (Newport Fleet 413) took home the Top Apprentice (and 4th overall) and Britt Hughes (Cedar Point Yacht Club) won race 5 to help him earn 2nd Grand Master. In the Radial fleet, 79 years young (I need a Fact checker for this…) Peter Seidenberg (Newport Fleet 413) took top honors in not only his Age grouping, Great Great Grand Master, but also the overall. While humbly accepting his award he thanked the Masters handicap system for the assist in the results, hmm, the handicap system he designed!!! Ryosuke Sakai (Cedar Point Yacht Club) took home 2nd Masters Radial. Some upcoming events to use your Hall passes on….. July• 7-9 Newport Regatta • 15-16 Lipton Cup

District 8 Lindsay Hewitt New York

Laserd8sailing@aol.com Special thanks to Frank Seckler for bringing together the whole D8 region from the Hudson River to the East End of Long Island. He has done a great job and we wish he could stay on longer. Thanks to Bob Blanco and Graham Hagger for stepping in to help me to keep things going and special thanks to Bob Terry, who continues to work tirelessly as our webmaster. Our first Spring event was the Seawanhaka Spring Fling held in April with a cold, gusty and shifty Norwester with a fleet of 25 boats. Spring Fling results: 1 Lawrence McGrath 2 Chris Poole 3 Paul Clifford (1st radial) Second event at Sebago Canoe Club results: 1 David Cripton 2 Ryo Sakai 3 Holly Sears Third event at Southampton Yacht Club - Dr Hull’s regatta and dinner. Great venue and gracious hosts. Many thanks to Kent Rydberg for the great hospitality. Southhampton Results: 1 Bob Blanco 2 Graham Hagger At the Atlantic Coast Masters Championship both Jean Ives Fillion and I finished in the money for District 8. Congrats to all. Updated schedule can be found on the D8 website at lased8.org.

District 9 Peter Bushnell Upstate New York We’ve completed two regattas in district 9 at the time of this report. However, it’s important to note that Lake Ontario shoreline and several yacht clubs have been badly affected by flooding this spring, with the lake level about 3ft above normal. As a result, the Newport regatta on Irondequoit Bay was cancelled, and the D9 Grand Prix planned for Sodus Bay YC has been moved to Willow Bank YC. Please see the updated schedule and keep in touch with the D9 webpage on ILCA-NA for the latest information. Ithaca YC hosted its annual Wine Keg regatta on May 27 with 13 sailors from the region. Unfortunately, only one race was run due to super light winds. Chas Williamson showed his skill in light air lake sailing with the win. Top 5 Results: 1) Chas Williamson, 2) Dan Fien, 3) Peter Bushnell, 4) Andrew Green, 5) Peter Gould, 6) Kenny Fourspring, 7) Mark Stuhlmiller, 8) Brad Dunn, 9) 10) Nicolas Boruling, 11) David Krystof, 12) Liz Clark, 13) Tom French, 13) Joe Miller. the longer you stayed on the water, the better your position in the standings. Glen Dickson was too fast upwind for anyone to make it competitive. He took all three races. Final results: 1) 2) 3) 4)

Many thanks to Pat Corr and Chuck Hunnewell for running RC and chaseboat for us! On Saturday June 10, eleven sailors sailed in the Saratoga Derby Laser Regatta. Eight were club members and three were from out of town; the furthest came from Potsdam. The weather promised a nice day for racing, with winds out of the south at 6 to 8 or so, and mostly sunny. The skippers meeting came and went with the lake as flat as a pancake. Was this to be another tease and switch by the weather that is so typical of lake sailing. Fortunately, an hour later the wind perked up and oscillated between 8 and 1 mph, although somewhat shiftily, the rest of the day. There were 6 races with one throw-out. Peter Bushnell of Cazenovia and Mike Kitner were always near the front of the pack and vying for the overall lead, with Mike winning by one point. David Burtis and James Nicol were also close to the front and battling for 3rd place, with David ahead at the end by one point, thanks in part to a capsize during a roll tack by James just after a superb start Allan Miller was also in the lead group with a 5th place finish. There were many other close races, for instance a two point spread between 7th and 9th place. Final results: 1) Mike Kitner 1,2,2,2,1,5 [8], 2) Peter Bushnell 2,1,4,1,3,2 [9], 3) David Burtis 5,3,3,3,4,1 [15], 4) James Nicol 3,5,1,4,4,4 [16], 5) Allan Miller 4,6,5,6,2,3 [20], 6) Brad Dunn, 7) Tom French, 8) Bill Hamilton, 9) James Symon, 10) Marek Czajkowski, 11) Nick Behuniak. Note by Peter. This Derby was “won by a nose” with David squeaking ahead of Peter right at the finish in race 6! Congratulations Mike Kitner. Looking ahead, the Ithaca YC is excited to host the 2017 No Coast Masters Championship July 22-23. This will be a fantastic event; hope to see a great turn-out! Here’s the updated regatta plan for the district. Again, please note the D9 GP has moved to WBYC. Looking forward to seeing you on the water! Marsh Creek Spring: Fourteen Lasers enjoyed several hours of racing at Marsh Creek, as excellent weather and reliable southerly winds prevailed for 6 races, mostly “twicearound” courses. The only anomaly in conditions was Race 1, where a couple of extreme and longlasting right-hand shifts penalized those playing the left or middle on both windward legs. John MacCausland of Cooper River strung together bullet after bullet to win by a wide margin, after throwing out a 6 or 7 in Race 1. Jim Knab (Cooper River and now southern Delaware), edged Chris Houston (MCSC) by one point for second, followed by MCSC sailors Pete Madonna and Joe Folds. The top five were awarded bottles of fine wine affixed with an extra label, “2017 Philadelphia Laser Championship.” Most of the competitors spent some time near the front, but the wine-winners sailed more consistently, playing the puffs and shifts. Special thanks to MCSC Sunfish sailors who staffed the RC: Charlie Lindsay, Fred Glasier, Jim Stetson, and Sue Huffington; as well as to Kathleen Parsons (shore support) and the elder June Futcher (shore-based photograghy). Shrewsbury Spring Regatta: SSYC’s Spring Laser Regatta was held on May 6th, 2017. It was an exhilarating day with winds blowing a very steady 21 mph, testing the sailors all day as well as the rescue boats. Fortunately the water was not that cold since everyone had their time in it! However even through the strong winds the fleet prevailed and completed the 5 scheduled races. Everyone should give themselves credit just for giving it a try that day!! Many thanks to Georgi Munger who was our PRO, she was assisted by Talbot and Lee Ingram. Talbot also played double duty by jumping into one of the rescue boats and helping out there. Dave Usechak along with Jack Foster , Bob and Louise Stevenson handled the rescue boats. Also a big thank you goes out to Robin Arnheiter and Iileen Saporta for handling the food and check-ins. Glen Dickson from Bay Head won the overall event with 5 bullets, Jesse Stevenson won the non master jr event finishing 4th overall out of a field of 8. Monmouth’s Spring Regatta: Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate for our spring Laser regatta at MBC on Saturday. The ENE breeze started out around 15mph and steadily increased to 20+ with an occasional gust that might have clocked 30mph. Nonetheless, six sailors suited up and went out. Phil Angelo’s day ended very early when he donated his porthole cover to the Navesink and made the wise decision not to sail in such conditions with a big hole in his boat. Dan Vought made it all the way to the starting line but opted for the warm, dry clubhouse rather than an afternoon in the pouring rain and gusty breeze. Four sailors raced in at least one of the three races (two W-L, one Olympic). As a regatta of attrition,

Plank Regatta:The sun finally shone and the temperatures went up to the 70’s for Shore Acre Yacht Club’s 5th annual Plank Regatta! Winds started light, but the Barnegat sea breeze never fails us, and filled in about 12-15 mph from the southeast to make for a perfect day. Fifteen Lasers showed up and, despite much fanfare, no Waszp foiling boats showed, claiming the wind was too light for them. Eric Reitinger (Brant Beach Yacht Club) took first overall and became our Plank Champion the second year in a row! Mike Russom (Brant Beach Yacht Club) took second eeking out Matt Goetting (Toms River Yacht Club) who took third. Nina Van De Vaarst (Shore Acres Yacht Club) took first place in the Radial class. The Plank Trophy, all that is left of our old clubhouse aft er Superstorm Sandy, is awarded to the overall (corrected time) Laser winner. Next year we look forward to sailing out of our new clubhouse! Clubhouses come and go.....but glory is forever (and Lasers are superior to Waszps)!!!! Orange Coffee Pot The Orange Coffee Pot this year benefited from hosting the Master’s ACCs that same weekend. There were X fulls and Y radials for the one day event. The westerly wind offered some tricky conditions with a puffy westerly breeze which kept the sailors on their toes. Andrew Puopolo successfully defended his title with Mike Russom just behind him and then Mike Munger in 3rd. In the radial fleet, Carrson Pearce also defended his title with Nigel Heath in second and David Waiting in 3rd. As for the Masters ACCs there should be a separate report but congrats to Peter Hurley on winning the event. Full Rig District Championships This is the first time in the author’s recollection that Monmouth hosted the D10 Championship. This feet in the last 15 years has resurged to become the most active fleet in the district. With help of fleet captains like Dave Watts and Chris Henkel, the club supports a very active frostbite series and hosts both spring and fall events. It was only fitting that the rest of the district see what makes Monmouth so special. Sailors arrived on Saturday morning to some lighter winds which only picked up as we started sailing just around lunch. The wind was coming out of the west which allowed for some long courses (mostly windward leewards and an Olympic thrown in there for good measure). The four races on Saturday showed a clear pack of 3 boats ahead of the others (sans throwout). After racing, the sailors were treated to a dinner catered by Chipotle, a first for this author at a sailing event, and it was a hit with the sailors. They then had the option to then go into downtown Red Bank which offered many great shops, bars, dessert stops and this author’s favorite, a pay by the hour arcade. Sunday offered an earlier start with some lighter winds for the first race. The

SUMMER 2017

wind was more out of the north then the day before which made picking the correct side critical as well as staying in the puffs. It was easy to go from the front to the back of the pack but then also easy to go from the back up to the front. The 3 races challenged the sailor’s minds and patience, but in the end Peter Hurley won the fleet of twenty one boats for the fourth time with Matt Goetting in second and Mike Munger in third. A huge thank you to Monmouth Boat Club and Chris Henkel and family for putting together a fun event. As we move into the summer, the master circuit is still active, some sailors will make the trip to the west coast to sail the major class events and some club series will start. The juniors also take a step into the spotlight with many events going on July through August. Zen, my sisters and brothers. We slid from spring to summer with the Melbourne Spring Regatta in April. Here are the top 10 (hey, since I’m writing the article, I can list the top 10, make that 11, if I want): Melbourne Yacht Club, Spring Regatta 1. Dave Hartman 2. Peter Hansen 3. Hal Gilreath 4. David Hiebert 5. Brian Gilcher 6. Matt Craven 7. Courtney Voehl 8. Kevin Ratigan 9. Robert Bryant 10. Juan Gaitan 11. Steve Caron From there, some of us D13 folks got to it at the ACC’s in Wrightsville. Nice to see multiple Florida faces there. How about that last race on Saturday?

Breeze on. Zen, sisters and brothers (at least until I realized I was going to have to beat into 20-25 to get home…not so zen at that point). That last Saturday race and the Carolina Yacht Club hospitality made the 25 hours of driving worth it. We kept it going at a couple of one day events, one on the east coast in Melbourne and one on the west coats in Tampa. For the Melbourne event (Treasure Coast Series Race Day), a HUGE thanks to John and Nancy Fox for organizing the day, for being RC, and for running the races. Perfect races, perfect day. Treasure Coast Series Race Day, Melbourne, May Full Rigs 1. Dave Hartman 2. Peter Hansen 3. Courtney Voehl 4. Brian Gilcher Radial 1. Hal Gilreath 2. James Liebl 3. Monica Wilson 4. Mike Taylor Kevin Ratigan would have ended up with a much better day at the Treasure Coast if I hadn’t knocked him out of a couple of races with the T-Bone collision to end all T-Bone collisions. Those TP-52’s that whacked the stuffing out of each other (good youtube video) got nothing on the whack I gave Kevin. Whoops. Man, I thought I could get my bow below him. From there, we rolled right into another one day regatta with the Goombay Regatta at Coconut Grove Sailing Club. I wasn’t sure we’d get to sail since it was nada breeze at the start time. But when awesome PRO Susan Walcutt said, “hang out in the shade,” and Roberto Lisano said, “I’ll tow all of us out with my 35 foot, twin 200 something hp outboard center console when it’s time,” I knew we’d sail. I wasn’t sure how Roberto was going to tow his Laser and drive his fishing boat at the same time, but we figured it out. What I didn’t know was how nice the day would get. It went from 2 knots to about 15 knots by the end of the day. So nice that none of us went in after the last race. We just stayed out played. Really zen. I’d give you the Goombay Results, but actually can’t since some of the folks didn’t register correctly apparently. Man, did that make a mess of the scoring. The only thing I know for sure is Kevin Merten from Coconut Grove Sailing Club ended up with a podium finish since he sailed all the races and registered correctly. Nice job Kevin! Uh, since I haven’t seen you, your trophy is at the CGSC bar. No kidding. So there’s a whole lot more fun to be had during this endless summer. We’ve got more Treasure Coast Series Days, we’ve got more Biscayne Bay Yacht Racing Series Days, and we’ve got other regattas too. To find out what’s going on, check out the calendar for District 13 on the Laser.org site. Search the calendar by checking the “District 13” box. Pick the event you want and then let’s all zen by getting sailing.

District 15 Griffin Orr Texas This spring was a great time to sail in Texas! We had big breeze, moderate temperatures and excellent competition! We started the spring with our second District event, the famous Easter Regatta at Austin Yacht Club. Sailors were greeted with spectacular conditions with 10-15 knots of wind both days, a full lake Travis, and sunny skies. Rounding out the top three are Dave Chapin, Scott Young, and Doug Peckover. Congratulations to the masters in the fleet as they we also able to round out the top 6, many of the the same competitors from the inaugural Eater Regatta in 1986! Next up, we went far south to the welcoming Corpus Christi Yacht Club, host of the Gulf Coast Championships and the Smythe qualifiers. Sailors were greeted with 10-20 knots of breeze both days accompanied by big Surf and some dolphins on the race Course! Thanks to Corpus Christi yacht club for putting on such a great event! We have one more spring Regatta until we greet summer, the 2017 Seabrook Summer Solstice Regatta, hosted by the Seabrook Sailing Club, June 24/25. This will be our final Regatta until the Palacious Cannonball Run begins in August. Happy Sailing!!

District 20 Sean Lennon Wisconsin, Illinois

spatricklennon11@gmail.com As I am writing this article I am in Harbor Springs Michigan getting ready to teach a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification course. I can’t help but miss District 20 Laser sailing. We are just beginning a great sailing season. The Milwaukee Bay Fleet has started and we have had some great races so far this year. Steve Dolan has been working hard to put together the Great Lakes Laser Masters Championship. It will be an awesome event. We also have been growing our youth Laser racing program. Through the efforts of the Milwaukee Yacht Club and its foundation the sailing school has expanded the youth Laser program this has caused a great influx of racers. We will be traveling to Laser regattas in the area. Kent Jones reported that Pewaukee Yacht Club has had a great start to the racing season with 12+ boats on the line each week. Our younger sailors have been doing an incredible job and are becoming very fast. The PYC’s hosting and coaching support for the Southeast Wisconsin MYST high school sailing program (fall and spring Lasers and 420’s) has these sailors in great shape and in the right mental spot to really make a strong showing as summer Laser racing gets fully under way. With 8 races completed so far the top 3 contenders are all under 18! Good thing we have a Masters category! Pewaukee is also pleased to be hosting the D20 Championship Regatta on June 24-25 with John Strassman as the PRO. The 5th Annual 2017 Chicago Laser Clinic was held from June 15th - 18th

Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club hosted Brendan Casey (AUS) and Ryan Minth (C-VANE USA) as the lead coaches. Chicago Corinthian also welcomed Laser Coach and Sailor, Cian Cahill (IRL) Rick Strilky of Chicago Corinthian Yacht has been doing an amazing job of supporting and educating sailors throughout the district. I always appreciate his tips and advice. Chicago Corinthian will also be hosting the Grand Prix event this year during the Hobelman Regatta. Make sure to attend. Especially if you are a class member. Make sure to check out the District 20 Laser Newsletter. Troy Tolan has been doing an amazing job documenting all of the great events and accomplishments in our district. If you have any news or events that you want highlighted please contact either myself or Troy Tolan. Troy also works with young Laser sailors at the Carlyle Junior Sailing Camp that occurred earlier in June. Also check out their regatta “Whale of a Sail”. Make sure to check-out the Laser schedule on Facebook and the Laser North American website. Also make sure that your membership is up to date with a current email. Membership is important because it allows us to have have official events like the Masters Championships and also Grand Prix events. June 17-18: District 20 Regatta at Pewaukee Yacht Club July 12: Geneva Lake Sailing School Dinghyfest (Youth: Laser Radial) July 29-30: Hobelman Regatta / District 20 Grand Prix Event at Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club August 5-6: Milwaukee Bay One-Design Regatta at Milwaukee Yacht Club (Youth) September 2-3: Great Lakes Laser Masters Championship at Milwaukee Yacht Club

TBD: Border Challenge at La Cross Sailing Club September 23-24: Red Flannels Regatta at Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club October 14-15: Whale of a Sail at Calhoun Sailing Association TBD: Oktoberfest at Nagawicka Yacht Club See you sailing! (920) 573-1922

District 22 Kurt Hoehne NorthWest The District 22 summer season has come in fits and starts, with just enough warm weather to get us excited. We’re all bracing ourselves for a great summer of sailing on the Columbia River Gorge thanks to the CGRA. The International Sailing Academy clinics are scheduled for June 14-18, June 2730 and July 7-9 prior to the Laser Masters US Championships which will take place July 7-9. The Gorge Blowout (downwind at high rates of speed) will be held on July 28 and the District 22 Championship will be held in conjunction with the CGOD Regatta July 29-30. The Portland Laser fleet is enjoying the Willamette Sailing Association’s new clubhouse! The good folk at the Bellingham Yacht Club are ramping up their program with a special emphasis on Lasers for junior sailing. If there is anybody with boats or equipment to send their way, contact me at kurthoehne@gmail.com and I’ll hook you up.

District 23 Geoff Hurwitch Utah The Park City Sailing association in Utah has begun its 2017 season with a growth in the program, welcoming around a half dozen new sailors to the fleet. Their half dozen program owned boats helps to build the fleet allowing both new sailors to test the racing scene out as well as non-boat owning members to charter a boat for the season. The first two nights of weekly racing had 14 and 10 Lasers respectively. They expect an average of around 20 boats in the peak season which is the result of a great social atmosphere as well as chalk talks and on the water support. The Park City sailing regatta is September 30/October 1. www.sailpc.org The Colorado portion of District 23 has a number of fleets racing their weekly series at both Cherry Creek Reservoir with the Denver Sailing Association and also at the Union Sailing Club in Longmont. The recent Hornblower Regatta had seven Lasers race with the victory going to Carlos Abisambra. Upcoming events for District 23 in Colorado include the Junior Olympic Regatta at Lake Dillon on July 28-20, the Lake Dillon Open on August 5-6, and the Colorado Laser Championships at Grand Lake Yacht Club on August 12-13.

District 24 NorCal

Reported by Takayanagi Toshinari. We had really good regattas for two consecutive weekends: Elvstrom/Zellerbach regatta 5/6-7 at St Francis YC and Monterey Club Laser Championships

5/13 at Monterey YC. San Francisco City Front is famous (or notorious) for the strong wind and choppy water, and this Elvstrom regatta was no exception. The wind was consistently 15-20 knots, and in general, fit or/and bigger sailors dominated the races. However, since the tide was against the wind during the races, we had relatively short upwind and long downwind, which provided opportunities for less-fit or/and lighter sailors to catch up. This made the races very interesting. In the end, the winners were Paul Didham for the standard and Andrew John Holdsworth for the radial. I think almost everyone got muscle ache next day.

Toshi toshinari.takayanagi@gmail.com

District 26 Guy Flemming Hawaii The District Championships were held May 13 with full results below.

We also had very good races in 15-18 knots breeze and bigger waves in Monterey Club Championship. What’s special about this venue is the beautiful scenery, very clean water and versatile marine Guy Fleming lives. Encountering seals is very Gabe ElHajji common, but often sea otters Michael Buelsing also welcome us. Observing Grant Christopher humorous sea otters floating Charlie Field around the race course was a special fun this time. The Max Roth winners were Tracy Usher Benton Widlansky for the standard and Andrew Sandy Park John Holdsworth for the radial Michael Bacon (again!). Another reason why this Dave Youtt regatta is one of my most favorite Scott Melander is the casual, friendly and Jordan Li enjoyable atmosphere which this Maile Jim yacht club offers. Many thanks to Trent Chismar the race committees for the great Richard Greever hospitality. Tracy Woodrow/Sam Thanks,

Why Join the Laser Class? What are some of the benefits of a strong class association? 

A strong class association means lots of boats to race against, near you and around the world!

A strong class association with lots of racing attracts the world’s best sailors - giving you the best racing possible!

A strong class association means major events scheduled at the best sailing locations and moving all over the North American Region - there will always be a big event near you!

points when sailing in major events, ranking you against your fellow competitors and making you eligible for end of the season prizes, like new sails, carbon tillers, etc.

You get direct benefit by joining the Laser Class!

What does the class association do with your membership dues? 

The first $14.00 of your membership dues go to pay the North American staff who work incredibly hard to: make sure our North American events get scheduled every year and that these events follow the high standards of the Laser Class, to publish our quarterly newsletter, etc. Importantly, that money also makes sure that if you ever have a question you can simply pick up the phone, or send an email, and a knowledgeable person will answer you right away.

$9.72 of your dues goes to the International Class where they use the money to pay their staff to make sure world level events get scheduled, ensuring all the boats are the same by inspecting the builders to make sure they are complying with the Laser Construction Manual, keep track of rules changes proposed by members, interfacing with ISAF on various levels, including keeping both the Laser Standard and Laser Radial as Olympic equipment, etc.

You receive the annual Laser Class Handbook with the current class rules, interpretations of those rules, class constitution, guidelines for events, useful information for keeping your boat in good shape, contact information for your district, etc.

A little over $7.00 goes to the quarterly assembling, printing and mailing of The Laser Sailor to you for the year.

Around $5.00 goes to support and promotion, ranging from direct support of the districts and regattas to the website.

You receive the International Class Association’s quarterly publication “Laser World” which gives a roundup of international events sailed around the world, as well as information from the international office.

You receive the North American Association’s quarterly publication “The Laser Sailor” which is loaded with regatta reports, technique articles, fitness and nutrition tips, sailor profiles, reports from each of the North American Region’s 26 Districts and much, much more. In addition, the magazine also contains advertising from Laser dealers selling Laser specific gear and aimed entirely at Laser sailors - if you are looking for something for your boat you will see it advertised here!

Most of the remaining dues go toward all the things it takes to running an organization of 2400 members, from Executive Secretary travel costs, to federal income taxes all the way to mundane office expenses. Your membership dues are used to keep the Laser Standard, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 as THE singlehanded dinghy to sail and race in North America and throughout the world!

A strong class association means solid class rules making all boats as identical as possible - you are competing against other sailors, not their pocket books!
