Area approx. 0.9 hectares

Background 2007 summer Had widespread flooding and caused death as the River Don overtopped its banks. 2016 spring Sheffield City Council f i n i s h e d t h e G re y t o Green phase 1 which is the largest retrofit SuDS scheme in the UK, aim to flood mitigation and surface water management. 2017 spring Sheffield City Council starts planing Grey to Green phase 2. 1

Flood Alleviation Strategy Use 3 types of Blues aim to capture and storage rain. -Consolidating Blue : to reinforce existing watercourse, only add floating vegetations and change the material of the riverbank in order to remain the largest river storage volume. -Collecting Blue : to store then purify the surface run-off. -Creative Blue : combined with arts and technology, let the site more attractive and sustainable.

Water Flow Cycle Axonometric When rain... -Water goes through kerb stone cut then absorbed by plants. -Infiltration through permeable paving. -Overflow water store in underground tank. When dry... -Reuse rain water from tanks.

3

Sunny Day Axonometric → Multi-functional and Multi-scales of open spaces for recreation when dry days.

Rainy Day Axonometric Be flooded during heavy rain and extreme storm events, limited access.

Location

Castlegate Frontage

Strategy

Avenue street trees to fit its linear shape on site, amenity lawns or wildflower meadows underneath trees to create a neat and tidy impression. Shrubs are clipped into hedges to form boundary as the buffer. Annual and perennial meadows with bulbs in between bring vivid changes through the whole year. Provide habitats for little mammals and insects bring the hard and dull site into life.

Naturalistic Planting Scheme Location

River corridor and Exchange Square

Strategy

Combination of trees, shrubs, grasses and meadows, natural distribution. Choose seasonal interests and specific plant species in order to provide habitats for wildlife especially aim for the UKBAP and Sheffield BAP species.

Background The Ponderosa Park was built in 1993 and had dams and river flowed through in ancient time. It locates at the Netherthorpe area near the Crookes Valley and Weston Park.

Brief As an urban park which is full of vegetation and wildlife, it has a chance to become a new open space for the public --a 'living museum' for adults and children to learn from nature as well as paradise habitat for the fauna and flora to live in.

Water purification

FWS wetland - Free Water Surface system

Through topography, surface water gathers to the wetlands. Design these two types of constructed wetlands to purify water then reuse it for non-potable water usage such as swimming and irrigating in site.

Site Selection 1 Problems-Drought & Floods Both of floods and droughts occur in the north estuary. So it is essential to preserve and improve the upstream first.

2 Solutions-Southern farm ponds The number of farm ponds which area is above 5 hectares accounts for 70% in the south that has higher density than others.

3 Additions - Land Use & Resources The southern area has opportunities to create new recreation expereince due to its countryside landscape and future land-use types.

4 Site Selection - Planning Site Firstly, to chose the agricultural region (the south). Then exclude “Urban plan zone” and “Economics and trade zone” in Taoyuan aerotropolis project.

Background The Taoyuan City had been known as “Land of tens of thousands ponds” since the Qing dynasty because of being fully covered by numerous canals and farm ponds which are the most significant and t ra d i t i o n a l i r r i ga t i o n assets for agriculture. Farm ponds consist of 3 major functionsp ro d u c t i o n , e c o lo g y , and living, from crop irrigation to biodiversity. However, farm ponds became useless after the Shimen reservoir had been established and gradually disappeared.
