Taoyuan City has been known as “Land of tens of thousands ponds” since the Qing dynasty, as it is features numerous canals and farm ponds which have been significant traditional irrigation assets for agriculture. The farm ponds had three main functions - “production”, “ecology”, and “living”, from crop irrigation to biodiversity. However, the farm ponds became useless after the Shimen reservoir was established and they have gradually disappeared. Site Selection/ 1 Problems - Drought & Floods trait

1 Greening

Legend

Consolidating - green Connecting - green City - green

The first stage, “Consolidating-green”, focuses on consolidating and ameliorating soil and water conservation in natural green areas such as forests, hills, riversides and farmlands. Furthermore, fragmented green resources 行動綠-透水鋪面 will be integrated into the community by creating “Connecting-green”- e.g. adding wetlands to combine ponds and riversides throughout the whole drainage basin. The next stage is to establish green infrastructure with artificial techniques -“City-green”- For instance, by using permeable materials to improve paving in the urbanscape, including pedestrian walkways and roads.

2 Livings Replace the concrete dam with natural, porous and pervious construction materials to harmonize with the surroundings and provide appropriate habitats for aquatic organisms. Then launch restoration programs to rebuild the environment using ecological engineering methods and preserving the original flora and fauna around and inside the farm ponds.

Design Concept/ “Shaipai” meant “boundary stone” for different ethnic groups in the past. However, there is no boundary anymore due to ethnic fusion. Therefore, transforming this concept into a “ripple” which represents the combination of stone and water - both are natural elements here. This also resolve problems with integrated methods.
