“Encountering a certain phenomenon creates an image that we can easily see, but we fail to seek the kaleidoscope behind.” Humans as we are, we abruptly act only on what our naked eyes can see. The face value of a phenomenon triggers our response, invigorates our senses to react, and galvanizes our voices to speak. Then, what? It seems like it’s the end of it. What about the other lens, The amalgamation of events that lead to what we see? Even our peripheral vision can’t clearly see the other side. Perhaps we are only like a steed with blinkers to see the surface, not the roots.

EDITOR’S NOTE In the ceaseless rhythm of our daily walks, where each step propels us forward into the future, it’s easy to be consumed by the ever-changing landscape. Amidst the swift currents of the present, there lies a profound wisdom in turning our gaze backward. As we navigate the whirlwind of modern existence, it becomes imperative to explore the footprints we leave behind. Are we merely skimming the surface, or do we possess the courage to delve into the recesses of the future? In this exploration, we may uncover the roots of our beliefs and rediscover forgotten moments that intricately define who we are. With the shovel in hand— we excavate the layers into the narratives and traditions. Each step is taken with the intent to discover, unravel, and comprehend. It encourages a collective effort that echoes the truths that might be challenging and revelatory. For it is in the act of digger deeper that we forge a richer understanding of ourselves and the world at large. Every reflection serves as a spade, breaking ground to unveil the connections between the past, present, and future. As we embark on this journey, it’s not merely about moving forward but also about comprehending the ground upon which we tread.

An Anecdote of Three Lacsonian Victors words by Jeremy Josh Alojado graphics by Beanne Jaca

Lacsonians shine in Kickboxing, Oratory Excellence, and Red Cross Youth Leadership The success stories extend beyond physical prowess and community service in the vibrant tapestry of achievements at John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (JBLCF-B). The recent triumphs of Mdpn. Manuel D. Roxas in kickboxing and the College Red Cross Youth (CRCY) Council have been enriched by the exceptional oratory skills displayed by Mdpn. Jian Nash Tolentino and Mdpn. Danny Christian Jumayao at the 61st National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute held at Baguio Teachers Camp last December 7-10.

A Kickboxing Prodigy Unfamiliar with the world of kickboxing, Mdpn. Manuel D. Roxas embraced the challenge when encouraged by seniors to participate in the ROTC Games Kickboxing Competition. With little experience, the 20-year-old prodigy dedicated himself to training, supported by his family and coach, entering each match with preparation and overwhelming passion. Roxas’ journey unfolded at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, where he faced kickboxers from various Armed Forces ROTC units. Undeterred, he secured a remarkable 2-1 standing in the 57-kilogram division, clinching the bronze medal and casting a radiant light on JBLCF-B’s athletic prowess. His story is a testament to the institution’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering resilience within its student body.

Oratory Excellence The narrative of Lacsonian values expanded to oratory excellence with Mdpn. Jian Nash Tolentino and Mdpn. Danny Christian Jumayao making waves at the National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute in Baguio. Tolentino emerged as the champion in Tagalog oration, captivating the audience with his eloquence and passion for the spoken word. On the English oration front, Danny Christian Jumayao secured an impressive 2nd runner-up position, demonstrating linguistic finesse and thought-provoking content. “In this competition, I stand triumphant, not just as a winner but as an embodiment of dedication, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. The Lacsonians weave a narrative of strength, integrity, and resilience, crafting a winning legacy that endures in the hearts of those who listen,

echoing a resounding message that when we stand together, we conquer challenges and emerge as champions.” A statement from Tolentino. These oratory triumphs add another layer to JBLCF-B’s commitment to holistic education, emphasizing the development of communication skills and intellectual prowess among its students. Tolentino and Jumayao’s success reflects the institution’s dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals capable of excelling in diverse fields.

Saving Lives in Practice The College Red Cross Youth (CRCY) Council stands tall as a symbol of leadership and community service. With over 300 active volunteers, the council, led by E/C Nelson D. Cagalawan, has consistently elevated the school’s reputation through its commitment to service and excellence. The council’s recent triumphs include being crowned overall champions at the First Aid Olympics, showcasing their skills in first aid, bandaging, transfer relay, and more. In addition, their dominance extended to the RCY Camp 2023, where they defended their title for the third consecutive year. These victories not only reflect their dedication but also embody the core values instilled by JBLCF-B.

The Key to Success: Culture and Identity CRCY President Nelson Cagalawan shared insights into the key factors contributing to their success. A positive team culture that embraces diversity and an unwavering commitment to pushing limits creates an environment where greatness can thrive. The faith that “there is always something great in everything” is a guiding principle, reinforcing the belief that challenges are growth opportunities. Alunan emphasized the council’s cultivation of a sense of identity and purpose, as reflected in their mantra, “We are the maritime vanguard.” Such qualities, essential for excelling in competitions and emergency response scenarios, also prepare individuals for leadership roles. The Red Cross Youth Council’s success resonates not just within the walls of JBLCF-B but extends as a force for positive impact in the community and beyond. In celebrating these multifaceted triumphs, John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (Bacolod) Inc. continues to illuminate its legacy of excellence, grit, and now, oratory prowess. The institution stands as a beacon of holistic education, where students are empowered to excel academically and as champions in diverse fields, showcasing the true essence of the Lacsonian spirit.

eligion has been a cornerstone for millions worldwide for as long as history can grasp. It provides a framework for understanding the world for its believers, offers individuals a sense of purpose and belonging, and, most of all, guides them in navigating the complexities of life, allowing people to create communities that promote empathy and kindness among one another.

What is a cult? The word “Cult” in the 21st century has been synonymous with several unsavory organizations such as NXIVM (marketed itself as a self-help organization but was later exposed for engaging in manipulative practices), Heaven’s Gate (In 1997, members committed mass suicide believing they would be transported to an extraterrestrial spacecraft following the Comet HaleBopp.), FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Led by Warren Jeffs, the FLDS has faced allegations of child abuse, underage marriage, and other illegal activities). And sadly, even here in the Philippines, a Soccoro cult led by “Agila” exploited children. When viewed from a different perspective, the word “Cult” originated from the Latin term “cultus,” which means “care” or “adoration.” In the past, the word itself wasn’t synonymous with malignant organizations. In ancient times, “cultus” referred to ritual practices, religious ceremonies, and devotion to a particular deity or religious figure. It encompassed the actions, traditions, and beliefs associated with worship. What is the difference between cults and religious faith? Believe it or not, despite their seeming differences, religious faith and cultic belief share similarities to their ideas in spirituality and belief systems.

The Differences Between a Cult and Religion What is the difference between a religion? And a cult? Many people assume

“Cults present themselves as saviors; they offer you the supposed blessing you’re supposed to be given in life and lure you in with sweetness and bliss you won’t find anywhere. However, the darkness hidden in plain sight creeps in when you’ve joined their circle.” they know the distinction between cults and religion. However, during ancient times, Christianity was considered a cult by both Romans and Jews. The determining factor between religion and a cult is time. Religious faith typically aligns with established, widespread traditions supported by historical foundations, recognized scriptures, and organized structures. These faiths often enjoy societal acceptance, boasting a significant following, and they grant adherents varying degrees of individual interpretation while emphasizing communal rituals and a sense of shared identity. In contrast, cultic beliefs often diverge from mainstream practices and societal norms, incorporating unconventional teachings, rituals, or ideologies. Not to mention, many practices by cults often lead to self-destruction, exploitation, and abuse of their members. Cultic groups might promote isolation from the broader society, fostering exclusivity and dependency on a charismatic, often authoritarian leader who wields significant influence over followers. Some cultic beliefs have been associated with manipulative or coercive tactics in recruitment and retention, contributing to negative connotations surrounding the term “cult.”

The Dangers of Being in a Cult Cults present themselves as

saviors; they offer you the supposed blessing you’re supposed to be given in life and lure you in with sweetness and bliss you won’t find anywhere. However, the darkness hidden in plain sight creeps in when you’ve joined their circle. “Jane Doe,” A brave survivor of the infamous NXIVM cult, shared her experience of being a former member of a notorious cult. “I finally felt like I was ready. … And my name is Jessica Joan,” The former member was referred to as “Jane Doe,” an alias she had created while she was still in the organization. “I had a traumatic childhood. The appeal was that they offered something they said would help you eliminate all your limitations,” Joan said. Shortly after being welcomed into the organization, Joan was approached by a powerful woman named “India Oxenberg,” daughter of “Dynasty Actress” Catherine Oxenberg. India showed Joan that she was there to “help” her with her past and heal her in the present. “India described DOS as a secret women ‘s-only mentorship program, much like a secret society… I wanted to surround myself with powerful women and wanted to do great things in the world,” When the ordeal was over, Joan

VOLUME 56. NO. 1 07 VOLUME 56. NO. 1

was forced to provide explicit videos and photographs for her to “truly” be welcomed into the organization. The women were organized into levels and given titles such as “enslavers” and “slaves.” Shortly after joining DOS, Joan said she was placed on a calorie restriction program that required her to eat only 500 calories a day.

How can you, as an individual, protect yourself from a cult? The first step is understanding a group’s practices, rituals, and customs to show how beliefs are expressed and followed. Established religions typically have widely recognized practices. In contrast, cultic views might introduce unconventional or secretive rituals. In

addition, delving into these beliefs’ core teachings and ideologies helps discern their alignment with mainstream or divergent spiritual doctrines. Established religions often have well-documented and widely disseminated teachings, while cultic groups might advocate beliefs significantly deviating from societal norms. They are gaining a proper understanding of these groups’ organizational structures and hierarchies. Established religions usually possess structured organizations, while cults often revolve around a charismatic leader exerting significant control over members. Observing is crucial in differentiating between religion and a cult; monitoring the impact on individual members and the broader society provides insight. Healthy religious faiths tend to positively contribute to the

lives of their adherents and culture, while cultic beliefs might isolate members and harm individuals and the community. A person’s judgment is integral in defining what it truly means to be a cult or a religion; if you see that certain practices, beliefs, and traditions aim to empower and bring you closer to your community and surroundings, it is more than likely that is a well-established religion with historical background regarding the aid towards the human psyche. In contrast, if a belief system or sets of beliefs neglect to nurture the people who believe in it while simultaneously revolving around a specific person, then more than likely that is a cult.

Press Freedom Amidst the Echoes of Impunity words by Mdpn. Joje Ken Montalvo & Mdpn. Danny Christian Jumayao photos by Mdpn. Emman Giordan Jagmoc

he unending tick-tock of the clock is a constant reminder of an ongoing struggle: the struggle to protect press freedom in the Philippines. Despite unwavering efforts, adversaries keep obstructing the flow of information, putting journalistic independence at risk or, worse, in jeopardy. This work needs ongoing attention to prevent threats and maintain the critical function of free and fair media in our society. Our life is at stake. In the Philippines, journalists continue to drop like flies, and the authorities persist in laying blame at the feet of the victims. The database of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recorded 87 journalists who lost their lives in the Philippines from 1992 until July 2021. The narrative remains unchanged, and the question lingers: How do we break free from this cycle of silence? With time, the Philippines is confronted with a sobering reality: journalists have lost. Many have lost their voices to deliver trustworthy news to people, grappling with legal challenges and governmental restrictions in the battle for press freedom. According to the data and monitoring of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), at least 199 journalists have perished since 1986, with 22 of these casualties occurring under the Duterte administration, further deepening the shadows that envelop press freedom. It’s an unfolding story about suppressed voices, buried truths, and a clock that gets louder daily. We have reached the turning point on the road as we traverse such complex situations. In this instance, the struggle for press freedom collides with the frightening presence of impunity. Fifty years ago, radio was the fastest means of disseminating information, connecting a farmer in a remote community to the pulse of a nation. In those days, the media was a trustworthy source to reach great distances. Meanwhile, the media landscape these days has undergone a seismic transformation. A wide range of platforms have emerged, expanding the dissemination of information. However, this augmented influence comes at a cost—a darker side of media consumption. The first half of 2020 bore witness to brazen state maneuvers detrimental to press freedom, some executed amid the throes of the coronavirus crisis. The head of the state himself, former President Rodrigo Duterte, persistently made well-publicized threats and hurled insults at media outfits, a trend that has persisted since 2016. Several journalists and media networks known for critical reporting, now find themselves entangled in legal battles, facing charges filed by high-profile state officials and government agencies. The fight for press freedom in the Philippines is inseparable from the looming sense of impunity. Journalists risk their safety and liberty to bring things to light, only to

be persecuted and accused. The unsettling image of immunity casts a long shadow, trapping the media in a dangerous dance with powers bent on silencing truth.

Ethical journalism at a crossroads: The Quiboloy Dilemma In an era where television is the primary source of information, shaping our perspectives on the world, a question surfaces: Can we genuinely rely on the news disseminated by various networks? The tangled web of media ownership, ethics, and credibility takes center stage as we delve into the unsettling case of Apollo Quiboloy and his Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI). In an unexpected turn of events, Apollo Quiboloy, a preacher and the owner of SMNI, received an award for “ethical journalism” from the Asia Pacific Luminaire Awards last November. However, given Quiboloy’s digital platform’s notorious reputation for red-tagging government critics, the essence of this recognition raises concerns. Peering into the corridors of SMNI, a media empire under Quiboloy’s control, reveals a tapestry of stories that strongly challenge the fundamental foundation of ethical journalism. Quiboloy, presently wanted by the FBI for alleged labor trafficking, presides over a network that, at its core, is not a journalistic en-

deavor but an influential propaganda force with close ties to the government. Atom Araullo, a Filipino journalist, model, and television presenter, has made a daring move in a legal process unfolding against a media landscape riddled with challenges, bringing a P2 million damage claim against two presenters from the television network SMNI. The issue’s essence is the alleged red tagging, a dangerous practice threatening individual reputations and the basic principles of press freedom. On September 11, Araullo, a seasoned broadcast journalist, made the final move, filing a legal case for damages against SMNI’s Lorraine Badoy and Jeffrey Celiz. His legal action is based on what he describes as a “series of unsubstantiated accusations and personal attacks” leveled at him and his family via SMNI broadcasts and different social media platforms. In the eyes of Araullo, these remarks go beyond the boundaries of fair criticism. Furthermore, Araullo argues that this

“Our life is at stake. In the Philippines, journalists continue to drop like flies, and the authorities persist in laying blame at the feet of the victims.” effort is not an isolated occurrence but rather part of a larger pattern targeted at harassing and discrediting media members whose reporting does not align with a specific goal. “I believe that the nature of their remarks goes far beyond the boundaries of fair criticism and are designed to discredit, intimidate, and foment public hatred towards me and my family. It also seems to be part of a broader pattern to harass and undermine media members whose reporting does not fit their agenda,” he asserts. Araullo emphasizes the broader consequences of his legal action and his reasons. He views it as a little contribution to protecting press freedom and a dedication to his family’s well-being and security. In a media landscape where political goals frequently compromise the truth, Araullo’s position serves as a rallying cry for journalists treading dangerous terrain. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) acknowledges and pledges its support for Araullo’s legal action. The NUJP highlights in a statement the critical concerns that red-tagging poses to the safety and security of individuals wrongfully identified as ‘communist terrorists’ or ‘propagandists.’ The contradiction is stark: How can a network with a history of red-tagging journalists and serving more as a mouthpiece for a church than an unbiased news source be awarded an award for ethical journalism? The answer lies at the heart of a media metamorphosis grappling with the echoes of impunity.

Unseen Heroes: Journalists’ Sacrifices Amidst Shifting Sands As the media landscape undergoes unprecedented changes, vlogging emerges as an influential platform for breaking news and social influence, predominantly on YouTube. A Pulse Asia survey reveals concerns over false information, with 58% of Filipinos pointing to influencers, bloggers, and vloggers, while 40% cite journalists. The stark difference between vloggers and journalists is specified. Most vloggers rely on responses, comments, and shares to make a living, and their credibility is associated with watching them. On the other hand, journalists have a more strict job that requires years of schooling and a commitment to enhancing standards. Their stories are carefully evaluated before being disseminated, guaranteeing responsibility to the network they represent. Journalists, often sacrificing their safety for reliable news, become unsung heroes in the pursuit of truth. They risk their well-being, even in extreme situations like super typhoons, to fulfill their duty of informing the public. As the Philippines is dealing with a dynamic media landscape, journalists’ responsibilities remain relevant and crucial in navigating the shifting sands of truth and accountability. Amidst the echoes of impunity, the symphony of press freedom vibrates with hindered voices wanting to be heard, representing both risk and courage in the constantly changing narrative of the Filipino press.

The Rise of AI Dominance and Its Impact on Human History Unfold “I fear the day when technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.” - Albert Einstein.

words by Mdpn. Carwin Pagunsan graphics by Antonio Nobleza

T

echnology is comparable to a lot of things and goals. It helps us ease the task ahead of us into bits and pieces. It eliminates the mundane tasks and the bulk of them, leaving only a workload that requires human precision in decision-making. Technology, in general, contributed a significant role in developing the history of humans, from the first computer, the first handheld phone, and the first camera to take memories to a multifunctional Phone, Cameras that are much more advanced, and Computers that are built for complex simulations. This is how technology has affected us from its first emergence. However, sometimes, we went beyond what we were initially tasked to do. It harms other people in any form regarding technology-related activities, from digital damage to outright shutting down the electrical grids of a large area. Now, in the current times, there’s an emerging technology, possibly affecting the entire human species as a whole as to how it operates and affects us called, AI or Artificial Intelligence. Defined by Thong Teck Yew, published in Digital Diplomacy on the “Medium” website, which says that Artificial Intelligence is a “broad term that encompasses machine learning and deep learning.” It’s been evolving through the years, and it has been faster. So, how can AI affect all of us?

Is it peak or possibly going beyond? Launched in 2022 on November 30, ChatGPT, made primarily by OpenAI, a website that primarily uses AI technology to answer user inquiries. A simple step is to create an account on the site, and then you have access to a multi-purpose tool. It works by taking in many books, articles, or websites, and then it’s used to understand your prompt - which is your question and then provides the best answer based on its understanding

of your prompt by using the massive data behind it. That’s how it works in a much-condensed summary. From there, you, the user, can create essays, articles, answers to your questions, and many more in seconds. A massive help in the education sector, in general, is the ChatGPT tool, which offers near-instantaneous solutions with near-perfect answers in just seconds. However, it’s not all sunshine. Things that are accessible are subject to abuse in one way or another. It’s been a trend for students to rely solely on ChatGPT or AI-powered tools to run activities for them entirely. It takes away the fundamental intention of the education sector, which is to teach students and let them explore through their actions, workloads, essays, etc. Teachers, instructors, and institutions worry about students relying solely on AI-powered tools like ChatGPT to do activities. ChatGPT is only one of the AI-powered tools that have emerged lately; some of them are, but are not limited to, text-to-art AI Technology, e.g., StableDiffusionn Midjourney; AI-generated voices like Voicify.ai that produces covers of songs, famous one is Spongebob singing “Cheerleader” by OMI, Chat AI wherein you can chat with your favorite characters and create scenarios, and stories. However, only some pieces of information that are given are reliable; ChatGPT is capable of answering questions with the absence of facts, like a person hallucinating. A statement from the University of the Philippines stated that ChatGPT can lead to damaging practices like cheating and plagiarism. They noted the importance of knowing its positive use– the abuse that needed to be mitigated, and ultimately, the human factor is still in control in the entire aspect of its creation. There needs to be some discipline or power to execute the full capability of these AI-powered tools for the advantage of humankind, specifically to help educate people. Not only

“AI’s rapid ascent raises critical questions about our future. As technology advances, how will it shape our society, influence creativity, and alter our decision-making?” that it affects teachers by hogging the complex work juices of the students, but AI can also affect specific Industries in terms of career prospects.

The Clash of AI in the Art Industry Everyone likes entertainment, and we value the works of our idolized artists; however, what if it becomes an AI? The advancement of technology at a fast pace, accessibility, and convenience are the highlights of such automation. However, with the implementation of technology such as AI, it’s safe to say that people worry about those jobs that this technology can take over. Artists are concerned about these AI-generated images as they improve daily, which can lead to copying their work with the click of a button. Hayao Miyazaki, the studio editor of Ghibli, stated when asked to watch clips and snippets of AI-generated Art, “It lacks the human factor; it doesn’t relate to the human emotions that people have poured into their arts.” People need help to differentiate between AI-generated and human-created Art. If Art was made solely by technology with no human factor, is it still called Art? It’s not only about differentiating Art, whether it may be AI or human-made; it’s the suspicion of AI’s taking over the art industry with its capability. Software and web development face the danger of layoffs as AI tools can exhibit a code from your prompt with just a click of a button. Financial analysts also collaborate with AI technology bots that automatically analyze and collect their data from hundreds and thousands of bits of information from the interna-

tional market. Given all of these factors, It is evident that AIA.I. can also affect society’s judgment.

The Algorithm of How Society Perceives In today’s age, we inevitably get addicted to technology. We should consider it harmless since we only use it for communication and entertainment. However, algorithms can mess up a person’s judgment. One person can scroll through social media and like a one-sided opinion, and the algorithm will only present that person-related post about one idea. This leads to distorting one’s capability to assess a multifaceted issue critically. According to Pew Research Center, Algorithms, essentially sets of instructions, are ubiquitous in modern life, driving solutions to problems and tasks ranging from recipes to comput-

er code, online searches, and artificial intelligence. The rise of complex algorithms has led to calls for regulatory frameworks, with discussions on federal oversight and ethical considerations, as highlighted by the White House reports and the Future of Life Institute’s principles for beneficial artificial intelligence. It’s worth noting that these activities by AI technology require them to read massive amounts of data created by Humans. Technically, the data they gather is made by a human; the speed at which they process and analyze it is what they emphasize; if data is included without being thoroughly examined and studied to be accurate and exact, such creation of information can create confusion, skepticism, distortion of information, and leading to creating biases. Such design can create confusion or doubt, creating preferences if data is included without being thoroughly examined and

11

analyzed to be accurate and exact. With that, it’s still essential to research and inspect the data given by AI as it can be inaccurate or sometimes just created by AI all on its own.

Use Wisely, Userbase This is still an emerging technology, and countless companies have researched and conducted experiments for these technologies to improve and evolve. Thus, it’s essential to take advantage of such technology only within the limits of ethical and moral consideration in the technological society and community. Knowing basic netiquette is still vital when entering these types of sophisticated technology. Everyone should be mindful of using technology and not depend on it; otherwise, the infamous discussion about technology taking over us in the future will spark a truth.

DIRI SA AMON Mdpn. Methuselah Cabalhin

The Ruins, located in Silay City, Negros Occidental, are a stunning monument to love and resilience. Known as the “Taj Mahal of Negros,” it features opulent architecture and a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The palace was destroyed by guerilla fighters during World War II to prevent Japanese forces from using it as a headquarters.

From the Fields to ‘Rich Negrenses’ Unveiling the Untold Struggles and Triumphs of Negros Occidental’s Unsung Heroes

razy Rich Negrosonans, or the so-called “Negrenses,” is the home of the most influential sugar industry in this country. The sugarcane cultivation on soil rendered productive by the ash spewed from the highest peak in Central Visayas, Kanlaon Volcano. The affluence and the prosperity that Negrosanons built over decades nourished an endearing, refined, and occasionally lavish spirit that sets us apart from every other Filipino. Now, Bacolod envisions a future where Bacolodnons prosper in building this city into a “Super City” — an island of people considered soft, caring, giving, joyful, and appreciative of life’s finer things. Will the joy-filled, hardworking, talented Negrosanons adapt to this city’s dream?

Bow to Fate Dilemma If not for the workforce of Negrosanons, would the “Crazy Rich Negrosanon” title still be instilled in the province’s culture? Unveiling the truth behind this title, understanding the struggles, and sympathizing with the never-ending smile of Negrenses seems to be the only way for the people to wake up from the realities of our day-to-day “pag-paningkamot.” Over the years, the country focused on the

prosperity side of this island while still covering the facts behind those successes. With a total population of 4,656,945 people in the Negros Island Region, we have Jose, a 46-year-old man, together with his family, who faced the harsh realities of Bacolod becoming a “Super City.” Manong Jose lived, grew, and raised his kids in the central part of the renowned city of smiles, Bacolod City. For decades of living there, they have built a foundation for a “home” that catered to their everyday needs and comfort. For them, it was forever that, despite the circumstances, Jose’s family was content to have a roof above them where they could persevere for their future, hoping to reinvent into a haven of tranquillity and comfort. However, their chapters faced a grim episode of inevitable change while the city prospered. “We were left with no choice. For this city to grow, we must comply with the government’s order,” Jose stated after being evicted from their home. The circumstances left them no choice but to relocate so the city could use their place for architectural giants. For Jose, it was a slap of reality—a sealed scenario that forever changed their lives.

Navigating the Crevasse Between Rich and Poor Seeing one city’s growth, surrounding a lot of infrastructure, seems empowering. When you look at it at a surface level, you’ll think, “My city has made a lot of progress, seeing that many people enjoy the view without a single face looking in despair.” The latter only means that the city is progressing so much that the gap between the upper-class and lower-class citizens has widened. Hence, people suffering from poverty cannot cope with this progress. Behrens and Robert-Nicoud initiated a compelling theory: larger cities act as crucibles that disproportionately reward the most talented individuals, creating a dynamic dubbed the “superstar effect.” However, this phenomenon comes at a cost, as the less skilled face heightened risks of failure in the competitive urban environment. The “superstar effect” shapes urban landscapes. It prompts farmers, drivers, storekeepers, and many more below the minimum wage earners to critically engage with the multifaceted challenges to reach the standards of this society. According to the United Nations (UN), larger cities tend to be more affluent but unequal, with opportunities unevenly distributed, leaving specific neighborhoods and populations needing proper access to essential services. The uncontrolled growth of cities often results in inadequate public services, highlighting the urgency of effective urban governance and planning in developing countries. This means that when a city expands to a more progressive environment, a significant chance of rapid population growth is expected.

Overpopulated Realities Becoming a ‘Super City’ takes work, boosting its image to be deemed more attractive to people. By building an impression, it’s undeniable that many people will be interested, and the population growth will change vastly.

17

As cited in Md Abdul Kuddus’ research about urbanization, the significant impact of urbanization on global populations, particularly the escalating challenge of pollution, is that over half of the world’s population is expected to reach six billion by 2041. Urban areas foster poverty, environmental hazards, and infectious diseases. Consequently, it was identified as contributing to poor nutrition, obesity, and pollution-related health problems, necessitating comprehensive strategies to address root causes and urging adaptation to challenges while mitigating unplanned urbanization. It is evident that while we celebrate the growth of our city and the branding of being ‘crazy rich,’ there are underlying issues left unmended due to the lack of proper allocation of catering to each grievance in our city. As we celebrate the progress of Bacolod in becoming a Super City, it is imperative that we not forget those disenfranchised by the so-called “progress” being established.

The fall of empires and the rise of deceit words by Mdpn. Sean Sergie Ladrido graphics by Antonio Nobleza

T

he decline of powerful empires, dynasties, and countries often stems from their rulers’ mismanagement and abuse of power.

In the case of the once-great Roman empire, the dangers of unchecked power and abuse of authority greatly impacted the fate of their empire. For instance, Nero, a Roman Emperor, is remembered for his extravagance and self-indulgence, draining the state’s resources for personal luxuries. His lavish spending depleted the empire’s finances and eroded the populace’s trust and support. This misuse of power weakened the empire’s economic stability and contributed significantly to its downfall. With his erratic decisions and extreme cruelty, Caligula exemplified the dangers of an unchecked ruler. His erratic behavior and abuse of authority created an environment of fear and instability within the empire. His actions not only alienated the nobility but also fostered an atmosphere of distrust and unrest among the people. Our country seems poised to repeat a similar pattern of corruption. Shockingly, more than a fifth of the proposed budget for the Office of Vice President in 2024 is designated for “confidential” expenses, marking the second consecutive year that this office seeks funds exempt from public scrutiny, unlike standard government spending that demands transparent accounting. As education secretary, Vice President Sara Duterte again proposed a P150-million confidential fund for next year. The exact amount was given by Congress to the Department of Education (DepEd) in the 2023 budget. The P500-million secret fund sought by the OVP would account for 21 percent of its proposed 2024 budget of P2.374 billion, which is 1 percent higher than its budget of P2.343 billion for 2023. It is more than the P471.29 million in confidential funds that the Department of Justice is asking for next year. DepEd’s budget totals P712.44 billion, the second-biggest proposed allocation behind the P822.2 billion for the Department of Public Works and Highways. The Senate criticized the overwhelming budget, more specifically by Sen. Aquilo Pimentel III. “It shows the lack of empathy and understanding of the real needs of ordinary Filipinos,” he said in a statement, adding that the hardships experienced by storm-devastated areas in the country “require a robust response from the government.” Sen. Pimentel III said in a statement. These allocations for the various departments of the OVP are laid out in the government’s 2024 NEP (Spending Plan). Due to the need for more transparency, the purpose of such a fund still needs to be answered. The proposed budget for the OVP is 336 percent higher than the approved P543.9 million budget approved for former Vice President Leni Robredo in her 2nd year in office. A large portion of the NEP is supposed to be allocated for “Financial assistance and subsidy,” which amounts to P920.8 billion, or 38 percent. However, the OVP did not specify the benefactors of the NEP.

“Unchecked power and abuse: How history’s lessons echo in modern governance.” Vice President Sara Duterte, as education secretary, has put forward a striking proposal: a confidential fund of P150 million for the upcoming year, mirroring the substantial amount allocated to the Department of Education in the 2023 budget. However, what’s genuinely eye-opening is the staggering request for a P500-million confidential fund by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) for 2024. This figure accounts for a significant 21 percent of the OVP’s proposed budget of P2.374 billion, surpassing even the Department of Justice’s request for confidential funds for the coming year, which stands at P471.29 million. To put this into perspective, consider that the Department of Education’s entire budget amounts to P712.44 billion, making it the second-largest allocation after the P822.2 billion designated for the Department of Public Works and Highways. The disproportion between the OVP’s confidential fund and its overall budget raises crucial questions about transparency and accountability. Such a considerable percentage allocated to secret expenses warrants scrutiny and calls for a thorough examination to ensure responsible and justified use of public resources. The danger of such a staggering budget is that without proper monitoring and transparency, the allocated funds can be used by related parties waiting for the funds to be released. In addition, the proposed budget can be used for so much more through means that are transparent, honest, and in line with public benefit. Projects include the building and improvement of schools, integration of the latest technology in the education system, and scholarship or financial aid for students in great need of help from the government. The backlash for such an outrageous budget came with significant backlash from the Senate. “The OVP can only propose a budget for safe implementation of its programs…. Nonetheless, they will no longer pursue the CF. The reason is that it seemed to be divisive, and as the vice president, she swore an oath to keep the country peaceful and strong,” said Senator Sonny Angara. Vice President Sara has dropped her request of P650 million in confidential funds to P500 million for the OVP and P150 million for the Department of Education in the 2024 budget. While power can be used for personal gain, it can also be used for the greater good of the people. This is why transparency is integral in creating a thriving and harmonious country. It establishes trust between the government and the people and allows the masses to have faith in their government when it comes to implementing their policies and advocacies, and ultimately, this is why the “Confidential funds” are unnecessary for creating a better Philippines. It neglects honesty and decency for the people, allows corruption to take place, and, most of all, covers the tracks of potential misuse of power that might be taking place. Confidentiality is unnecessary on the road to progress in a country.

Pang-aaping Tahimik, Inaaping ‘Di Maka-imik words by Mdpn. John Leigh Defante graphics by Mdpn. Jerammel Leandro Anlap

S

“I don’t know how the word ‘partnership’ started to be used. It’s really an agreement that China will not stop our fishermen from fishing. That’s it, very simple. They will allow our fishermen to fish in the fishing grounds that they have used for many generations,” ani ni Marcos.

Innocence Under Siege: Gaza’s Children and High Cost of War words by Jerric Claridad

T

he Israel-Gaza conflict has been a recurring and deeply ingrained issue that has caught the attention of the global community for decades. In a state of turmoil, unveils a cutthroat tragedy that impacts the most vulnerable members of society.

Innocence Lost In a densely populated Gaza strip, the consequences of conflict are particularly severe for children. The daily struggles faced by children in the region, from constantly navigating air threats and raids to witnessing the destruction of schools and playgrounds. According to the statements from the Israeli military, the ongoing Israel bombing in the Palestinian territory, including southern Gaza, is acknowledged as one of the tensest conflicts of the 21st century. The military engagement unfolds within a populated neighborhood currently Under Siege, characterized by elevated concentrations of civilians, particularly children. And has prompted a global concern. “The Biden administration asserts that an excessive number of Palestinians have lost their lives, acknowledging that the true figures for civilian casualties may exceed the currently cited numbers.”

Fear’s Daily Grip For the young souls, life has become a haunting reality where each day sheers violence. The children live in an unrelenting fear in their daily lives. This fear delves into their existence, leaving the most tragic trail. The healthcare system in Gaza, already strained by years of conflict, is struggling to cope with the influx of injured children. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and medical supplies are scarce. The international community watches as the region’s youngest inhabitants bear the physical and emotional scars of a conflict they did not choose. Children are barefoot, weeping as they oversee the tragedy in dozens of bodies wrapped in white burial shrouds, blankets, and rugs outside the overcrowded morgue. Another veil reveals the blood-caked face of an innocent child. In the emergency room of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah said that many children had been brought in alone and in shock, with burns, shrapnel wounds, or severe injuries from being crushed by rubble.

Bridging Global Response Gaza’s cry fronts and echoes across the borders, and the international community finds itself grappling with a moral response. Humanitarian efforts, spearheaded by several organi-

Despite the challenges, the unstoppable dedication of aid workers continues. Many put their lives on the line to help Gaza’s children, showing a shared commitment to helping people. The global response offers that people around the globe agree on the urgent need to help those most at risk. Looking at how the world is responding, it is clear that it has made some progress, yet there are still a lot of complicated tasks ahead. Lending a hand needs more than quick fixes; it requires a long-term plan with the main problems causing the conflict. People everywhere watch as countries figure out how to help while dealing with political challenges.

The Unyielding Pursuit of Hope Dr. Iman Farajallah, a psychologist based in the United States, boasts extensive experience in researching and assisting with childhood trauma. The question arises: Can war-related trauma ever be undone? According to Farajallah, drawing from her wealth of experience, the answer is a resounding no. However, she emphasizes that efforts can be directed towards mitigating some of the harm, fostering acceptance, building resilience, and moving ahead with life. In a personal reflection, Farajallah shares that the echoes of war-induced trauma persist in her own life. Even after

two decades since leaving Gaza, she remains unable to bear the sight of fireworks. The sound catapults her back to horrid times in Gaza when it was under attack. Farajallah underscores that the solution does not lie solely within psychology; instead, the answer rests in a peaceful political settlement to address the longstanding issue of Palestine.

Beyond Borders Looking beyond the borders of Israel’s conflict with Gaza’s children, it is crucial to acknowledge the heavy toll it takes on the lives of humanity. Children are stripped of their innocence by the violence of war, pleading for attention and action. This is not just a call that surpasses borders, politics, and beliefs; it is a cry to recognize the shared responsibility we all bear in safeguarding innocence. Pain is inevitable—it is etched into the minds of Gaza’s children. These stories aren’t merely distant tales from war. They are mirrors reflecting what we all have in common. Let’s shift our focus to the futures of Gaza’s children, setting them apart from the more significant political issues that are intertwined globally. By addressing the root causes of conflict, we pave the way for a future where innocence can grow without the wrath being brought by roots.

midst the chaos of college life, where tension is ever-present, there is a hidden refuge that helps ease the burden: the exceptional support we receive from our aquatic companions. A dog’s devoted company and a cat’s soothing purrs aren’t the only things that make a difference in our school community. The tranquility of a fish, moving elegantly through its watery habitat, significantly affects the health and happiness of the people working there. Having these fish around the school positively affects students’ mental and emotional health; they are more than just pets. Chief Mate John Erll Destacamento is an extraordinary man who has found exceptional comfort in his aquatic friend. C/M Destacamento is an integral part of the school’s mission to cultivate a welcoming and prosperous community, in addition to his role as dean of the College of Maritime Education. Beyond his duties as Dean, he exemplifies how having a pet can change a person’s outlook on life. C/M Destacamento began his journey into pet ownership, particularly with Betta Fish, during the pandemic in October 2020. Starting with small ornamental fish like danios and neon tetras, he was drawn to their vibrant colors. The low maintenance of Betta Fish, also known as

Siamese fighting fish, became a significant factor in his choice. “I was motivated by my father, who kept ornamental fish in our pond as a kid because it made me feel like there’s a little bit of nature in our home,” says C/M, describing his motivation towards fishkeeping. Fishkeeping became his sanctuary, providing a therapeutic escape amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. He says that the gentle flow of water, the fish’s vibrant colors, and the tank’s natural balance offer a daily retreat for relaxation and mindfulness. C/M Destacamento shares, “Keeping ornamental fish has been a healing experience. The tranquil underwater world promotes mental well-being and provides a peaceful escape.” The fish’s vibrant colors and graceful movements bring joy and relieve stress. The care routine instills responsibility, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment in daily life. With this first-hand experience of gaining solace and relief from keeping fish, he decided to take the initiative by distributing Betta Fishes to selected students to promote a sense of responsibility and stress belief. “Sharing fish isn’t the only goal; it’s also about creating a thoughtful hobby

that flows into the stream of well-being. Each tank holds a lesson in duty, a burst of joy, and a flow of kindness. I want my students to let these fish teach them about the beauty of companionship, finding solace, and a sense of responsibility in their daily lives.” C/M Destacamento encourages the school community to consider the benefits of pet companionship, emphasizing valuable life lessons in responsibility, empathy, and routine. Pets can be a source of joy, stress relief, and compassion amidst academic pursuits. Fishkeeping promotes a sense of responsibility, joy, and stress relief and fosters social interactions among people who share the same interests. He shares, “I was able to meet new people in my hobby of keeping ornamental fishes.” Acquiring new fish led to conversations with sellers or breeders, creating connections and friendships within the fishkeeping community. This shared hobby didn’t just lead to connections; it sparked real friendships, showing how pets can be more than companions—they’re social magic makers. In Chief Mate John Erll Destacamento’s case, this magic journeyed into the exciting world of Betta Fighting Fish Competitions. “Getting into Betta Fighting Fish Competitions was quite a ride,” he recalls.

“Amidst the chaos of college life, there is a hidden refuge that helps ease the burden: the exceptional support we receive from our aquatic companions.”

“During the pandemic, I stumbled upon a post on a betta fish group on Facebook. The idea of flaunting my betta fish collection was too tempting to resist—it turned into an adventure full of surprises.” The community, he adds, was super friendly to newcomers. As he got more involved, he found himself in the thrilling world of competitions. “Winning an award for one of my betta fish was a real high. It wasn’t just about the competition; it was about the joy of trying something new and finding exciting possibilities in unexpected places.” In the process, he took it upon himself to enhance the living conditions for his betta fish in preparation for upcoming shows. This journey not only introduced him to the standards in these competitions but also evolved into a fulfilling responsibility—nurturing beautiful

betta fish that he raised, seeing them win, and maintaining their beauty became an integral part of his journey. As C/M Destacamento aptly says, “I understood that my interest had grown beyond a hobby when I saw the fins move gracefully and the scales sparkle. Before long, it became their duty to protect the beauty beneath the water’s surface.” The journey of Chief Mate John Erll Destacamento through fishkeeping is a captivating story that explores the themes of unexpected tranquility, shared joy, and newfound meaning. His encounters unfold remarkably as he navigates through the vast realm of aquatic life. His story demonstrates the profound impact of pets on our lives as they improve our well-being and foster meaningful connections within our school community.

Whether seeking solace in the serene hobby of fishkeeping or spreading warmth through the generous act of distributing Betta Fish, it is clear that pets hold a significant place in C/M Destacamento’s life. He immerses himself in the thrilling world of Betta Fighting Fish Competitions and participates in the events. He wholeheartedly embraces the crucial responsibility of nurturing and safeguarding the exquisite life beneath the water’s surface. Within the tranquil flow of his story, we discover a wellspring of inspiration. It serves as a gentle reminder that even in the simplest of interactions, there lies the opportunity for personal development, shared happiness, and the enchantment of uncovering significance in unforeseen circumstances.

The Herculean Inner Battle words by Angelic Feril graphics by Beanne Jaca

I

n our small world, encountering individuals with a penchant for emotionally hurting us is inevitable. Some abusers refuse to acknowledge fault, leaving us frustrated and questioning, “What is wrong with them?” Apologies may be absent, even on their deathbeds, leaving lasting scars and perpetuating cycles of harm. While advocating for an end to stigma, mental health is sometimes used as a scapegoat to evade accountability, leaving us in a quandary as acting on it risks being labeled as the “bad guys.” According to Dr. Tracey Marks, a psychiatrist from Atlanta, personality disorders involve thinking and behavior patterns that develop over time. We all possess traits of some disorders, but it’s considered a disorder if these traits cause dysfunction across various life areas. Thus, one can

exhibit narcissistic features without having a full-blown narcissistic personality disorder, complicating societal understanding, especially for those affected. A student from John B Lacson Colleges Foundation - Bacolod (JBLCF-B), Angel, A pseudonym, shares grievances about being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder (Cluster B). Despite an impaired prefrontal cortex affecting thought regulation, Angel grapples with determining incompetence or an underlying issue, struggling with relationship establishment and exhibiting mean behavior as a protective response. Dr. Marks notes that Bipolar disorder itself doesn’t prompt dislike; instead, it’s the magnification of inherent personality during illness episodes. Overlooked traits of cluster B personality disorders in everyone make spotting them challenging.

VOLUME 56. NO. 1 27

What Are Cluster B Personality Disorders? Cluster B personality disorders, including antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic conditions, share traits categorized due to commonalities, such as dramatic or excessively emotional behaviors, relationship difficulties, and notable distress. Psychology Today reports individuals with personality disorders may not actively seek help, especially those with narcissistic and antisocial disorders unless prompted by family or legal intervention. The case of “Mama Otlum” (Peejay De La Cruz), who gained fame through Starbucks photos, faced controversy for stealing a cellphone despite denials. Justifying actions, Otlum claimed he believed the phone was ownerless but had already sold it. Amid criticism, Mia Angela Salvador Simon, an SK member and mental health advocate, defended Otlum, citing his mental health struggle supported by a “psychosocial” disability indicated in his PWD ID. Simon states, “This is proof that the Philippines is still lagging in mental health issues. But we cannot just give up because there are still many Peejays out there who need assistance—professional help (psychotherapy) rather than trampling on human rights.”

Now, does this mean that we can let other people’s actions due to mental illness slide? Addressing harm caused by a person with mental illness requires nuance. Mental illness doesn’t excuse harmful actions, necessitating accountability. Factors like illness severity, understanding capacity, and ongoing risk should be considered. Legal systems often think of mental state culpability, with severe cases leading to specialized interventions. Balancing justice, protection, and mental health support is crucial, promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring accessible services to prevent potential harm. If someone poses a danger, appropriate interventions, including involuntary hospitalization, may be necessary for all involved safety.

For instance, the Mang Inasal is regarded as ‘pang masa’ or budget-friendly because of its affordability. Sadly, inflation affects the prices of the restaurant’s menu. “Mang Inasal is no longer considered budget-friendly. Is it just us, or is the unlimited rice option (PM1) now priced at 160+ pesos, with an additional 20 pesos for your drink? Even if you can consume 3-5 servings of rice, it’s getting expensive just for the chicken. I’m just ranting because I used to eat here thrice a week, but now I’ve stopped,” a rant from a netizen on Reddit. It’s disheartening to observe the shift in perception among Filipinos, where the joy associated with the prospect of unlimited rice servings in restaurants has transformed into a sentiment of disappointment and hesitation. The culprit behind this change lies in the relentless surge in rice prices. Consequently, one is compelled to ponder: What is the underlying cause of this abrupt shift, and why has the affordability of this staple, once synonymous with happiness, been compromised?

Dependency on imports According to the most recent “Grain: World Markets and Trade” report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Philippines imported approximately 3.9 million metric tons of rice during the 2022-2023 trade year, surpassing China’s importation of 3.5 million metric tons. This heightened dependency exposes the market to fluctuations in global rice prices, transportation costs, and other international factors that directly impact the cost of imported rice. Consequently, disruptions in the international rice supply chain can exert upward pressure on local prices, affecting this essential staple’s overall affordability. Addressing the challenges of import dependency requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing measures to enhance domestic production resilience and ensure a stable and sustainable rice supply for the Filipino population.

Government Policies According to a study about the domestic and international impacts of the rice trade policy reform in the Philippines by Jean Balie and Harold Valera, The government’s shift from quantitative restrictions to a tariff-based system for rice imports in the Philippines holds significant implications for rice price inflation. Using a global rice model, the paper assesses the potential impacts of this trade policy reform on imports, production, consumption, and prices. The analysis addresses three crucial aspects: The regional variation in farm prices, differentiation of implications by origin due to varying tariffs, impact on domestic prices in third countries, simulation results indicate an anticipated rise in imports, a noteworthy decrease in farm and retail prices, and an increase in rice consumption. Although the reform is expected to reduce total inflation in the short term, the study underscores the importance of policymakers channeling additional tariff revenue to support rice growers and enhance competitiveness within the domestic rice market.

Consumer Behaviour Consumer behavior significantly contributes to the rice price hike in the Philippines through several factors. The intrinsic status of rice as a staple food creates consistently high demand among consumers, driven by cultural and dietary preferences. Brand loyalty and quality preferences play a role, as consumers may opt for specific brands or varieties that could be priced higher, influencing overall market dynamics. Buying patterns, such as bulk purchases or shifts in consumer behavior, can create fluctuations in both supply and demand. Sensitivity to price changes prompts consumers to adjust their consumption patterns or explore alternative food options in response to rising rice prices. Additionally, economic conditions, marketing strategies, and answers to promotions further shape consumer choices, influencing the overall landscape of rice demand and pricing in the market. The increase in rice prices in the Philippines results from a complex interplay of domestic and international factors. Heavy reliance on rice imports and supply chain challenges contribute to market vulnerability. Fluctuations in domestic production due to natural disasters and agricultural issues further compound the problem. Government policies, economic conditions, and global market trends all exert influence on the cost of rice. The growing population pressures the demand for rice, necessitating a delicate balance between domestic production and imports. Hence, we can call for a bowl of extra rice.

Sweet Smiles, Bitter Realities: Navigating Trade Liberalization in Negros Occidental’s Sugar Industry words by Angelic Feril photos by Mdpn. Emman Giordan Jagmoc

I

n a mundane world with the busy movements of people, we often feel bitter or sour due to many priorities to focus on and conundrums to ponder. After a long lethargic day, a small bite of a sweet treat can assuage the heavy feeling within us. It is safe to say that Negrenses smiles with a sweet tooth. In fact, as per the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA), Negros Occidental is known as the nation’s “sugar bowl,” predominantly cultivating sugarcane. The province accounted for 86.2 percent of the entire sugarcane cultivation area in the region, resulting in a rise in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This aspect is advantageous from the perspective of companies engaged in trade and mainly government revenue amid trade liberalization. Trade liberalization involves eliminating or decreasing restrictions or barriers that impede the free flow of goods between nations, widening competition for the industry, especially in the local market alone. Given fewer restrictions, importers can easily import sugar and sell it at a price cheaper than local produce. This issue is not being tackled well because it benefits consumers by allowing them to buy

imported ones at lower prices, as Filipinos often deem local produce inferior. Additionally, the supply of sugar in our country is prone to shortage, leading to inflation and the rise of sugar importation, as seen in 2022 when an alarming shortage caused one of the biggest companies, Coca-Cola, to stop its production temporarily. The country benefits from trade liberalization, especially concerning food security. Research on the effects of trade policies on food security conducted by Raphael Pacheco, a political science student at De La Salle University Dasmarinas, reveals that trade liberalization, beyond the sugar industry, enhances food security by streamlining imports, increasing the overall food supply, and fostering affordability through competition. Yet, this increase in imports disrupts the demand for agricultural goods in the Philippines, further reducing the demand for locally produced agricultural items. The impact of trade liberalization is detrimental to both food exports and imports. The double-edged sword aspect of trade liberalization both delivers positive and negative effects on the industry, but the big question is, are the sugar farmers equipped for it?

VOLUME 56. NO. 1

The sugarcane farmers interviewed from various cities, including San Carlos, Silay, Victorias, and Escalante, share common concerns about the impact of trade liberalization on their income. With experiences ranging from 4 to over 20 years as tapaseros, they express awareness of the challenges, citing issues such as low local sugar prices due to imports affecting their earnings. Harvest production varies, with satisfaction levels regarding income fluctuating, some finding it insufficient for family needs. The income structure is predominantly fixed, and while some receive government support, there is a collective desire for higher sugar prices and restrictions on imports to stabilize the market. Overall, the farmers emphasize the need for additional government assistance to navigate the evolving economic landscape, expressing gratitude for existing support programs but highlighting areas where further aid is essential. According to Romela Nipales from First Farmers Holding Corporation in Talisay City, the impact of trade liberalization on the agricultural sector in the region is viewed with mixed sentiments. Initially seen as fostering healthy competition, concerns arise about potential disadvantages, particularly a loss of control as trade shifts to larger entities. The negative effect is noted in broader economic activity involving major traders and companies. The office managing sugar production primarily focuses on providing planter services, and the Sugar Regulatory Agency is involved in responding to global competition. The balancing act between supporting domestic production and maintaining competitiveness is acknowledged. However, concerns are raised about the lack of consistent support and a complete process of dealing with challenges. The discussion touches on the potential impact on farmers’ productivity and the shift towards mechanization to address declining workforces. Overall, the complex dynamics of trade liberalization involve balancing competing interests and addressing the need for consistent government support.

31

Existing government support is acknowledged, but the tedious process of applying for farmers leads them to give up, settling for an income that can barely suffice for their needs. The effects of trade liberalization in the local market affect their salary, as the majority of consumers prefer imported products. Faced with these conflicts, sugarcane farmers resort to becoming mechanics. According to the employer in the FFHC, once machines take over, the quality of sugarcane will be subpar compared to the manual quality works of the tapaseros. This may cause further problems in the sugar industry. It seems like the sweet smiles of Negrenses have an underlying decay.

he Philippines has been ranked as one of the most gay-friendly nations globally and is dubbed the most gay-friendly country in Asia. In a survey conducted by the US-based Pew Research Center among 39 countries (with only 17 of which had a majority accepting homosexuality), the Philippines was ranked as the 10th most gay-friendly country. However, do these numbers truly reflect our realities? Regardless of the changing times, LGBTQIA+ people in this country are still facing stereotypes, discrimination, hate crimes, and a general fear for their safety and well-being just by merely existing, and so the question remains: For a country so proud of saying we celebrate the Pride of the queer community are Filipino LGBTQIA+ members accepted or tolerated? Robert, an alias, is a college student from John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation- Bacolod (JBLCF-B) who identifies as gay. When asked the question: ‘Do you feel safe being your true self in public?’ he answered, “Not all the time; since high school, I was able to express myself more, but of course, I’m always looking behind my back and being cautious. Although, thankfully, I haven’t received any physical threats to my well-being, there are always verbal insults and offensive jokes. Being your true self is hard when you must hide some parts of yourself because you’re afraid of being judged or hurt by others.”

“We are only accepted when society feels we have done or proved something to them. We must be funny, entertaining, successful, or have many achievements. But we also need to watch out for how we act in public; we can’t act as we want to without people talking behind our backs or making fun of us. The Endless Fight for SOGIE Bill If the LGBTQIA+ Community is being accepted in the Philippines, then why are we still fighting for the SOGIE Bill to be in full force? It took 17 years since its first filing for the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Equality (SOGIE) Bill to be approved. On September 20, 2017, the House of Representatives approved LGBTQ+ rights for the queer people of the country. Although this is a big step forward in the quest for true acceptance because political representation is essential, the Filipino people still have a long way to go. “It is sheer numbness to say that the SOGIE Equality Bill is not urgent,” said Senator Risa Honteveros on the lack of urgency for passing the SOGIE Equality Bill despite being long overdue. She also added that the queer people of this country

VOLUME 56. NO. 1 35

should be given justice for years of facing discrimination, of young LGBTQ+ kids being bullied at school, lack of urgent medical care, and being denied work just because of their sexualities. The SOGIE Bill, also known as the Anti-Discrimination Bill (ADB), aims to prevent various acts of discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. The fact that we had to push for this law to be set to protect the lives of LGBTQ+ people for years is baffling. Queer people in this country fought and are still fighting for fundamental human rights, and that is far from being accepted in this society. “The bill has been languishing in Congress for over two decades. For two decades, there has been no protection for the LGBTQ+ citizens of this country. Let us not forget they are our fellow human beings and citizens, too.” -Sen. Hontiveros. Our government has made efforts

to be progressive and more inclusive towards the LGBTQ+ community. Still, at the same time, it also halted and stagnated our progress in making the people see that the members of the queer community are also humans and are also Filipinos. They deserve the same fundamental human rights and decency as anyone in this country.

IT’S OKAY TO BE GAY Even though LGBTQIA+ acceptance has come a long way, there is still much work to be done because many of the issues that lead to the problem are still unresolved. Incomplete legal protections, persistent discriminatory practices, and pervasive societal biases all work against the LGBTQIA+ community’s complete acceptance. It will take consistent work in advocacy, education, and policy reform to address these complex issues and create a culture that celebrates diversity and allows people of all gender identities and sexual

orientations to live freely from discrimination. Hence, Pride is an essential event for the LGBTQIA+ Community because it gives them a platform to fight for their rights actively, spread awareness, and mobilize people from all walks of life to work together to create a more accepting and inclusive society. We Filipinos pride ourselves on having a sense of community amongst each other. “Bayanihan,” as we call it, is a spirit of communal unity to help each other without expecting rewards to reach a specific goal. It’s time for us to live up to that name, not judge anyone by who they love or how they want to express themselves, and see the LGBTQ+ members of this country as equal to any other Filipino. Because every single person deserves to feel like they belong because of who they are.

THE DISTURBING REALITIES OF ABUSE IN MARITIME SCHOOLS words by Mdpn. Angelo Ryan Giltendez photos by Mdpn. Jerammel Leandro Anlap

A

midst the boundless horizon and the mysterious murmurs of the sea, here is a domain that is all too often obscured by debate and weighed down by antiquated conventions. The maritime institutions that train the next generation of seafarers and navigators have a reputation for being resistant to change and stuck in the past. A disturbing tide of sexism and homophobia towards women and members of the LGBTQIA+ community runs beneath the placid surface of these organizations.

SEXISM Sexism is a pervasive issue within maritime institutions, creating an environment where female students face significant obstacles on their path to success. Due to derogatory jokes that frequently use women as the punchline, the classrooms are filled with unsettling laughter. The marks made by male students and instructors create a hostile atmosphere and make it uncomfortable for female students working hard to excel. Anna, an alias for a female maritime student studying at John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation in Bacolod, expressed her concerns about the behavior of her classmates and instructor during daily classroom lectures. She mentioned that they often make fun of women, using the excuse of lightening the mood during discussions. “Halin sang una, ginapawalaan ko nalang guid na bi ang pirme gagwa sa ila baba, especially sa akon nga mga classmates kag teachers kay sanay na sila guro sa amo na. Pero personally, gaka cringe ko sa part nga gina adlaw adlaw nila kag kung kis-a ginadala ko nila sa joke to the point nga mapasakay nalang ko kay nakulbaan ko nga mahambalan killjoy ko,” said Anna, expressing that her experience was traumatic, and that she feels threatened or in danger whenever these circumstances happen in class. MISOGYNY The issue of misogyny is not limited to blatant acts of discrimination; it manifests in subtler ways that chip away at the confidence and morale of female students. Various microaggressions, exclusionary practices, and a lack of mentorship further alienate women in the class, creating an environment that stifles their potential and undermines their contributions.

VOLUME 56. NO. 1 37

“Unveiling Sexism, Misogyny, and Homophobia. Female students face obstacles, microaggressions, and discrimination, urging a call for transformative change. Urgency in fostering an inclusive environment and implementing policies protecting women and LGBTQIA+ individuals will create a more respectful learning environment.”

Therese, a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, is among those students who have personally encountered misogyny. She reported these incidents to the appropriate authorities, but her concerns were not addressed. “Sang last napuno na guid ko kay pirme pirme nalang ko ginahambalan nga masanay na ko na dapat kay mas lala pa na kuno ang maantosan ko sa barko. Te nagtry ko palapit sa teacher ko kag gin address ko sa iya, pero wala man diyapon actions or miski address lang man,” said Therese, addressing her concern regarding the lack of effective recourse to combat prejudice towards women in the maritime industry.

HOMOPHOBIA The maritime industry, characterized by its vast scale, confronts challenges that surpass gender inequality and encompass discrimination against individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+. In addition to the existing challenges faced by women, the industry also struggles with an elevated prevalence of homophobia. Both faculty and students contribute to this problem, which results in an environment that marginalizes and silences LGBTQIA+ people. By definition, homophobia is the irrational fear, hatred, or discrimination against individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQIA+). It can manifest in various forms, including prejudiced attitudes, discriminatory behavior, and violence. For someone who has been studying at John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation in Bacolod for more than four years, Micky, an alias of a second-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering student, has gone on to reveal his experiences regarding the rampant homophobia in the institution. “Out naman guid ko ya daan sa tanan, kay daw waay naman ko rason para itago ang akon nga pagkatao sa iban. Ulihi ko na gale narealize nga disadvantage ni sa school, kay ako pirme gakatuksuan, gakatrippan, kag gakatawaan taga klase. Kis-a sadya-sadya lang man, pero may ara guid ya tiyempo nga mahipos nalang ko sa kilid kag magpasakay kay para waay nalang gamo,” said Micky, talking about his experiences about having to deal with being the joke of the class just because of his sexuality and gender expression.

A CALL FOR CHANGE It is crucial to urgently advocate for transformative change given the prevalence of abuse and unfair treatment that students at the institution experience from its own staff, faculty, and student body. Addressing the current issues at hand is crucial. By fostering an open dialogue, we can promote diversity and inclusion. Additionally, implementing policies protecting women and LGBTQIA+ individuals will create a more inclusive and respectful learning environment. Educational institutions are responsible for promoting understanding, tolerance, and acceptance among their students and staff. Therefore, we need to ensure that the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation in Bacolod truly upholds its core value of equity. This can only be achieved by creating an environment where our students feel safe, heard, and protected.

EDUCATION

Attaining One’s Potential: Grasping Quality Education words by Mdpn. Efren Arcenas photos by Mdpn. Clarence Paul Lindong

A

door rises tall in the shadows of possibilities, its golden brightness offering a world of freedom. Unlike wood or metal doors, this one is formed from the transformational power of knowledge. George Washington Carver famously remarked, “Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom”. His words echo through time, illustrating the need for education to break the human spirit from the chains of ignorance. Our education is our power; with this power, we can lend a hand to the people around us. It is a fundamental human right for people to have access to education, despite their socioeconomic status. It is devastating to think that in this world, it is evident that not all people can easily access quality education, contrary to what we expect. However, education alone will not do it; the finest level and an inclusive one should be rendered to students. In essence, the highest possible quality of education that can be provided to students should be put into practice for them to succeed as workers and contribute to their communities. Hence, the United Nations (UN) wants to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education worldwide through its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Still, dark shadows loom over educational institutions, casting doubt on their effectiveness. According to the 2018 data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), an international study that aims to evaluate education systems by testing the skills

and knowledge of 15-year-old students, the Philippines ranked 79th out of 79 countries in reading comprehension and 78th in science and mathematics. In the nonprofit 2022 Global Knowledge Index, which assesses a country’s education, innovation, technology, and research and development, the Philippines ranked 77th out of 132 countries. This is 21 places lower than 2021’s 56th out of 123 countries. There is an apparent collapse in the quality of education, but at the same time, other countries have improved their educational systems.

the student body’s demographics, which now predominantly comprise individuals from affluent backgrounds. The cum laude graduate of the year 2020, Rene Principe, highlights the contrast between his success story and the harsh reality of extreme poverty that hinders millions of Filipinos from accessing quality education. While celebrating his achievements, Principe calls attention to the inequities in the education system, emphasizing the need to address the barriers that prevent the less privileged from pursuing higher education.

Access to Education

Underfunding

Equitable access to high-quality education has been elusive throughout formal learning in the Philippines, yet it can be achieved. While 82.4% of Filipinos over 25 reported having completed their primary school in 2019, the same cohort’s completion rate for secondary education falls sharply to 30.5%; the accomplishment percentage drops to 24.4% for a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree. Another reason for this deteriorating number of completion rates in three levels of education is the need for more funding to provide better facilities and services to our learners. The University of the Philippines (UP), once dedicated to accessible education for the underprivileged, despite its initial mission to provide accessible education for the financially struggling, has transformed, making it increasingly challenging for the needy to gain admission. This shift is reflected in

According to House Bill 1783’s explanatory note, the nation continues to fall short of the UN requirement that education receive at least 6% of the gross domestic product (GDP), making it harder for them to provide for the needs of the schools. As indicated by the World Bank (WB) statistics, the Philippines’ public expenditure for education never breached 4.4% from 1980 to 2020 and was generally below the global average in most years from 1999 to 2019. Inadequate funding plays a significant role in why the Philippines still needs to work on enforcing high-quality education; this also leads to other issues, such as insufficient school facilities, a lack of equipment and other learning materials, and teachers need to be better paid. Funds for education are like food for people; they are necessary to continue functioning and be more productive. The lack of educational resources results

40 TheCarrier in an ineffective learning environment, and its aftermath is low academic performance from students. Accordingly, policies have been enforced to slowly improve and meet the expected growth in the academic performance of Filipino learners, but they should be more effective.

Curriculum Challenges The K–12 curriculum has been impactful for Filipino citizens; However, it has the positive goal of enhancing students’ skills in preparation for their professions and has also given issues to those struggling financially. The program adds two more years of studying and two more years of parents or guardians supporting their children’s finances before entering college. The curriculum has also challenged the teaching-learning integration, making it hard for some teachers to deliver their lessons and contribute to their learners’ knowledge. According to David Yu, a Grade 12 teacher who shared his sentiments with the Inquirer, “The curriculum is congested, and several prerequisites of some learning competencies are missing and misplaced.” When teachers see this as a struggle, how about the students who need their teachers’ assistance? Since it negatively affects the teachers’ performance, it will reflect on how learners conduct what they’ve learned. This leads to disappointing results that don’t meet the international standards needed to show progress in developing the quality of education in the country. It is in great need that the curriculum being implemented in the country will exhibit a high level of literacy and skill sets to the nation’s students. If an outdated and obstructed curriculum is implemented, it will continue dismantling our academic performance nationwide. Proper implementation of an established and practical curriculum, with the coordination of teachers and students, will undoubtedly be a big step toward producing progress in the country’s quality education.

Teacher Quality

Teachers are very crucial to the performance being displayed by students, but what if even the teachers need help with their performance? Based on research by the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), 56% of schools offering teacher education nationwide have had below-average passing rates in the licensure examination since 2010. This poor performance in the licensure exam-

ination can make us question the quality of teachers who enter the professional stage. Yes, this should be a warning for what a teacher could perform during their work since a licensure examination tests the knowledge acquired in their four-year course. According to a study conducted by the WB, 66% of teachers in the Philippines are observed to have a “medium-low” use of effective teaching practices, 19% had “low” service, and only 15% had “medium-high” use of effective teaching practices; no share of teachers was observed to have a “high” use of effective methods of teaching. Inefficient teaching shows low-quality teachers, leading to poor performances by learners who rely primarily on what their teachers teach them. Highly effective teaching methods can be administered through training teachers to improve themselves, which is essential. Another thing that the WB has discovered through their survey is that 40% of students in the Philippines have mentioned that their teachers are often absent during their class hours. Absenteeism among teachers means less

time spent discussing topics, leading to students needing to catch up in lessons. This affects students’ academic performance and non-academic factors such as their motivation and induced behavioral problems. Many factors contribute to the national issue of being unable to enforce quality education, and the government should prioritize supporting the education sector. According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), “It is essential that every Filipino child, whatever their circumstance, has access to learning that offers a quality, inclusive, and relevant curriculum,” but how can we achieve this when issues around the education system are not resolved? The involvement of teachers and learners is crucial to achieving this goal, but we need the government to take measures to support them. Through this, equitable and inclusive quality education will be more attainable. As a quality education becomes a reality, we can improve our lives and thrive in society. This promise calls us beyond the golden door to a brighter future.

TAYLOR’S VERSION (Taylor Swift’s reclamation of her stolen master records) words by Mdpn. Efren Arcenas Jr. photos from Taylor Swift Official Page graphics by Beanne Jaca “Artists should own their own works.” -Taylor Swift

A

rt makes us feel things and heighten our emotions. One of the excellent hit pop stars, Taylor Swift’s many talents is conveying stories and messages through her music. Inspiring millions of listeners to love, dance, be who they are, and be empowered. But her art also brings in money, and her top priority right now as an artist is to control the wealth her music brings in. Behind all her fame and success is an artist who’s been fighting for years to take control and manage her work’s means, method of production, and distribution. This started when Swift signed a record deal with Big Machine Records in 2005. A fresh-faced Nashville singer with long blonde hair, a guitar, and a dream to share her music with the world. Her contract then expired in 2018, but not before she managed to pop out bangers like “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Love Story,” and so much more. She switched labels to Universal’s Republic Records when her deal was up. Big Machine owns the masters, or the original recordings, of her first six albums, typical conditions to any recording deals. In her new contract, Swift made sure to have the rights to her future masters- a step par for the course of any successful artist. Universal Music Group was trying to buy Big Machine at the time, and Swift was hoping she would eventually get to own her past works. But as she grows with the music industry, people and the contracts they govern change.

DISPUTE WITH HER OLD LABELS When Big Machine music executive Scott Borchetta, Swift’s old manager, sold her masters to Scooter Braun, he lost control of all her past works. Braun’s move was brilliant on a business level because Swift’s master recordings reap profits whenever her songs are streamed or bought. But from a personal perspective, it was controversial because Swift claims that Braun has reportedly bullied her, pushing her to reclaim her master records for herself. Despite her negotiating efforts, the label won’t let her own her music. Swift stated in a Tumblr post that for years she asked and pleaded for a chance to own her works but that would entail her signing back to Big Machine Records. She walked away because she knew that once she signed that contract, Borchetta would sell the label, selling her and her future alongside it. “I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, stadiums.” she said. Swift knew that her work would eventually be sold, but she never anticipated that it would be sold to Scooter

Braun. “When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter.” Swift claims that Scott betrayed her trust by selling Scooter her master’s despite fully knowing his bullying towards her. “I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the constant, manipulative bullying I’d received at his hands for years. Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked, Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video that strips my body naked [the “Famous” video]. Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work that I wasn’t allowed to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.” Borchetta, being her old record executive, knew what Swift had gone through because of Braun, and he still gave him more of a chance than her to own her labels. “Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words’ Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”

A WOMAN IN THE INDUSTRY “I’m takin’ my time, Takin’ my time, ‘Cause you took everything from me. Watchin’ you climb, Watchin’ you climb, Over people like me.” -Mad Woman, Folklore 2020 Using her newfound political voice, Taylor highlights one of women’s significant struggles and injustice in one of her newer songs, Mad Woman, reflecting her struggles with Borchetta and Braun. Women, especially those in the celebrity and music industry, are constantly ridiculed by men, society, and, yes, even other women. And when you dare to fight back, you will be labeled as “emotional” and “crazy.” “Now I breathe flames each time I talk. My cannons all firin’ at your yacht. They say, “Move on”, but you know I won’t. And women like hunting witches, too. Doing your dirti-

It’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together” -Mad Woman, Folklore 2020 She also highlighted that other women would go out of their way to drag another woman down instead of uplifting each other despite going through the same struggles. Amidst the Braun issue, his wife, Yael Cohen, did his ‘dirty work’ and went public on Instagram to call Taylor a lying bully. The line. “Wanting me dead has really brought you two together,” aside from Braun and Cohen, could also be a nod to Kanye and Justin Bieber, who took part in the bullying, both artists managed by Scooter. Her courage gave her inspiration to speak up on her new albums that she actually owns herself. Proving yet again that she’s an artist with conviction and is beyond what the media paints her to be. Because she uses her musical prowess to inspire and tell her own story. In the middle of Taylor shooting shots at Braun during her initial Tumblr post in July 2019, Kelly Clarkson weighed in and tweeted, “@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions. I’d buy all of the new versions to prove a point:” a great display of women helping one another in a much-needed time when Braun, alongside the media, was not on her side. In August 2019, Swift seemed to have taken Kelly’s advice as she announced that she would be officially re-recording her first five albums during an appearance on Good Morning America. When asked if she would put all that work in, she stated, “Yeah, that’s true. It’s something that I’m very excited about doing because my current contract says that starting November 2020—so next year—I can record albums one through five all over again. I’m very excited about it because artists deserve to own their work. I feel very passionately about that.”

TAYLOR’S VERSION “When something says ‘(Taylor’s Version)’ next to it, that means I own it, which is exciting!” -T.S. She re-recorded all her past works one by one, finally getting control over her creations. Starting with Fearless and Red in 2021 up to her latest album to this date, 1989. She also released ‘on the vault’ content so that fans would come and listen to her newly released albums. Her fans did show their support and more, making both albums successful alongside her ongoing Era’s Tour. Within the first year of their release, Billboard reported that Fearless (Taylor’s Version) sold one million equivalent units, while Fearless earned 242,000 in a year when it was initially released in 2008. The numbers also speak for themselves with the success of Red (Taylor’s Version), selling over 1.94 million equivalent units versus the first version’s 220,000 units sold in the same period. The re-recordings are not in any way for Taylor to earn more money than she already has; she reminds her fans and everyone that she’s doing this to finally have control over her own works after all the years, all the arguments, and all the disputes she had to face to have the power of her own art. In this industry, artists often get the shorthand of the stick, especially women, being manipulated and controlled by their managers and executives. Selling their souls and artworks with one pen flick on a contract. Despite everything, Taylor’s Version reminds artists that anyone can take control of their hard work, even if others won’t. Taylor Swift is a fantastic singer, performer, lyricist, and artist, but she’s also a strong businesswoman. She knows what she deserves and fights hard for her success, which threatens many people, but it should also inspire even more people, especially artists. So next time you listen to your favorite Taylor Swift song, whether it be “Enchanted,” “Blank Space,” or “22”, make sure you’re listening to Taylor’s Version.

VALUES CORNER

Through the Years: A Lacsonian Tradition of Values words by Mdpn. Vince Dave T. Duquilla & Mdpn. Marc Cortez graphics by Mdpn. Jerammel Leandro Anlap

mong the most capable and notable educational institutions that support maritime students, hone technical knowledge, and contribute to shaping the panorama of seafarers’ impact worldwide, one stands out. The John B. Lacson Maritime University consists of two campuses in Iloilo, specifically in Molo and Arevalo, and one campus here in Bacolod. All three campuses have carried on the vision, mission, and values of their founder, Capt. Juan Bautista Lacson. As it expands, the institution has been developing the next generation of seafarers every year. It does this by constantly improving its facilities and services, which can help students develop their technical and analytical skills. Various hands-on tasks are also regularly completed to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills to handle machinery failure and distress situations that call for quick decisions. Discipline is always a focal point of emphasis as observing students’ behavior in a campus environment; one can see that they are moving uniformly, paraphernalia is well shined and scheduled haircut inspections are mandatory every first Monday of the month to maintain cleanliness and orderliness of students. While navigating a fresh approach to teaching synchronous classes, the institution and the people who constituted it remained positive. They saw the situation’s bright side, hoping things would gradually improve and return to normal. The pandemic’s onslaught has marked the past two years. Still, students persevered and pushed through the challenges that presented themselves despite curveballs being thrown by uncontrollable factors like unstable internet connections and power outages that disrupted the flow of online classes. Students at this institution address each other equally despite coming from diverse backgrounds and being raised with very different parental figures. The campus environment and how staff and faculty treat students demonstrate that everyone is treated equally and without preference. Additionally, students treat their peers in the same manner that they treat themselves.

VOLUME 56. NO. 1

“From Sea to Success: A Glimpse into the Enduring Traditions and Core Values of John B. Lacson Maritime University” However, equity has now been imposed to substitute equality as one of the core values held by Lacsonians. Treating every student fairly, irrespective of their circumstances or background, is called equality in an educational setting. It guarantees that every student has access to the same opportunities and resources. Conversely, equity aims to level the playing field and give every student the chance to thrive by offering varying degrees of support or resources to pupils according to their unique requirements. Equality and equity are crucial in the educational environment to maintain fairness and provide every student an equal chance to succeed academically and socially. As time passes and changes become apparent, the students and those in the surrounding community remain fidelity or loyal to one another. They see the school as their second home, feeling at ease everywhere they go and forming relationships that may last a lifetime. Every day at John B. feels precisely like the first. The pleasant vibes and kind faces that permeate the campus make your time here something you will never forget. Being a true-blooded Lacsonian, one must also have integrity with everything they do, as it shows who you are as a person and reflects the type of discipline you are taught at home and school. Lacsonians have embodied integrity as it is preached through the four corners of every classroom and practiced by teachers and school personnel, becoming second nature to the people belonging to this institution. With change being the only constant thing in this world, one thing is for sure: it’s the presence of our founder with the solid foundation of teachings and beliefs he has left us, which the institution strives to embody and live by every day as they continue to strive for excellence and produce world-class competent and reliable seafarers that help shape the maritime world and serve as a guiding light in the darkest oceans willing to do whatever it takes to hone and mold Brave and Resilient Seafarers of the future.

REVIEWS MOVIE

Taylor Swift’sThe Eras Tour words by Jeremy Josh Alojado graphics by Beanne Jaca

P

retty much every single Swiftie in the world was; after the success of the release of her latest album, Midnights, and her continuous reclamation of her “Stolen Albums,” the world was her stage and stomping ground as Popstar royalty Taylor Swift announced the start of her World Tour after five years, named The Eras Tour celebrating the different eras of Taylor’s Diamond crusted music journey. However, the saddest part of this was not all fans or Swifties were lucky enough to watch it live. Either they failed to win the Ticketmaster lottery to snag a ticket, or it was costly enough for them, or for one of the most painful parts, their country is not one of the tour destinations. As all efforts were futile and the story of us seemed like a tragedy, a glimmer of hope came down for all the Swifties in the world.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is 2 hours and 48 minutes of an irresistibly shiny, shimmering Taylor Swift encompassing the very essence of the tour within the four corners of the movie screen. It was filmed over the first three nights of Taylor Swift’s six-night run at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, from August 3-5, 2023. It features the generic eras tour setlist showcasing several album hits throughout the different eras. Starting with the Lover era, with great hits like Cruel Summer, The Man, You Need to Calm Down, and Lover. Then cue Taylor Swift in her golden fringe dress, signaling the start of the Fearless era, featuring the album’s namesake song, You Belong with Me and Love Story.

VOLUME 56. NO. 1 47

The setlist featured for the movie comprised more earworm hits, including Ready for It, Difficult, and Look What You Made Me Do for the reputation era. The tear-jerking Enchanted would transport your mind and soul to the concert itself for the Speak Now era. But whichever period Taylor Swift is returning to, what comes through is her unique ability to connect with her audience emotionally as much as the music. She has incredible stage presence—her hustling, her joy— but even as we watch her change from one era to the next, there’s a fundamental genuineness. Director Sam Wrench’s cameras are constantly in motion throughout an almost three-hour medley of Swift’s songs, stomping, smiling, and singing. As she and her dancers traverse the enormous square footage of her SoFi Stadium stage, which ingeniously lights up to match each time frame, they encircle her. Swarming the heavens to survey the crowd, they are like 70,000 excited fireflies ablaze with their cell phones. However, they also get up close and personal to capture even the slightest nuance of a facial expression. This works especially well in emotionally charged moments like Swift’s ten-minute performance of the melancholy and furious “All Too Well.” The Directing Team seamlessly combined all the best parts of the 3-night performance into one serving of the Eras Tour experience that would undoubtedly leave you wanting more.

Watching the movie live in the cinemas was an experience within an experience. Seeing everyone dressed up in their favorite era only to find them united, singing and dancing to their favorite Taylor Swift hits could bring smiles to anyone’s face. Despite the film leaving you screaming for more, featuring only two of the six surprise songs, which is one of the critical moments of the Eras Tour concerts, leaving out a few songs from the three-and-a-half-hour runtime removed, possibly because adding another 45 minutes felt like a bit much (or there are plans for a “Director’s Cut” in the future). “The Archer,” “Long Live,” the Haim collaboration “No Body, No Crime,” the “Seven” interlude, “Cardigan,” and “Wildest Dreams” didn’t make it into the film. But the experience was less. The movie is no longer available in most cinemas worldwide, and no news is still made for online streaming of the said film. But she knows her past connections with online streaming platforms Disney + and Netflix, which hosts one or more of her concert documentation. The movie can be found in any of the two sooner or later. For now, swifties are bound to relive the moments and memories they made watching the film in their most futile attempt to recreate the bliss and joy of being able to attend the concert in person.

Battle Royale Mechanics that stayed persistently through generations

The game follows the Battle Royale mechanic of having a zone, which in time decreases until only one team remains, that is the victor. With the zone decreasing, it also increases the damage it deals to survivors outside the perimeter. Another famous mechanic or trait of Battle Royales are the loot boxes, these provide enormous benefits from attachments like stock, extra mag, muffle, scope and grip. These are layered down to tiers, identified by their color coding, the higher the tier, the higher the benefits.

Play Now! Coupled with the accessibility of the game, it’s available on steam for PC and for mobile players, the playstore or Istore. Crossplay is enabled, favoring those of the same platform as you to provide a fair experience. It was released on Sep 21 of 2023, and as of the moment is on the positive review and notes from players. Create your own highlights! dear survivors.
