GEOGRAPHY Urban, Regional & Global Studies

Are you curious about‌ Social conflict in cities across the globe? The Middle East as a geostrategic hotspot? Why people risk their lives crossing international borders? How to plan the green city of the future? China and India’s might on the world stage?


Overview of Specialization You will tackle real-world problems and theoretical issues familiar to political scientists, sociologists, economists, urban planners, and anthropologists – but from a geographic perspective. You will analyze social issues as explicitly spatial issues - where political, social, cultural, and economic activities take place; why these activities take place where they do; how location influences these activities and how activities are interconnected across space. You will master a comprehensive assortment of qualitative and quantitative skills such as research design and implementation, policy and archival research, statistical analysis, and mapping/geovisualization. You will have the opportunity to pursue internships for classroom credit and undertake independent research. You will find careers in: Urban planning International development Conflict resolution Law and public policy analysis Community organizing Location planning for private firms Health services management

Preview Urban, Regional, and Global Studies Life and Death Geographies: Global Population Dynamics (Geog 470) Understand global population trends and their causes and consequences. Challenge your assumptions about the ‘population explosion.’
