Jason and Gabriela Thompson and their five children have enjoyed calling The Sanctuary home since 2020 when they purchased their twenty-year-old Andy McDonald classic French Country style home. Knowing they wanted to keep the French Country look while enjoying a fresh and updated exterior, they opted to enhance the classic French look by painting it white with a pale blue front door and matching window shutters. Also, adding to the exterior update, they included a new roof with copper finials and a copper chimney cap. The results are stunning. Today, their home looks like a classic French Country house that one might find in Provence, luscious landscape and all.

Upon entering their backyard space, it is clear that the Thompsons like the white clean classic French theme. Keeping with this theme, the decking is white limestone laid in a Versailles pattern. The pool, contracted by Gary Maestri of Maestri Pools, has a French gray plaster that gives the pool a deep Mediterranean blue sparkle that is certainly inviting on a one-hundred-degree Louisiana summer day. There is even a nod to Greece in the mixed blue glass subway patterned tiles glistening alongside the pool.

The pool gardens continue with the double-layer boxwoods, and large Sylvester Palms line the rear of the pool and pool wall. These hearty palms are a worry-free addition because they can survive the occasional Louisiana freeze. Russian Olive trees are perfectly aligned along the backyard fence for a bit of privacy.

It is only natural that the Thompsons would have a lovely home, gorgeous gardens, and impeccable landscaping. Jason is the owner and operator of Grass Inc. In business for twenty years, Grass Inc. has thrived servicing the entire Northshore area, offering a myriad of services, including scheduled lawn maintenance and exquisite landscaping: both new installation and scheduled landscape maintenance, irrigation, lighting, drainage systems, and horticultural maintenance year-round. Jason and his crew can do it all.

Jason’s expertise is evident when observing the Thompsons’ own outdoor haven. Gabriela says about their front yard gardens, “You can tell we love neatly manicured boxwoods. We love them so much [that] we incorporated a double layer around our gardens for extra dimension and uniform look.” Equally as beautiful are the rose bushes. You don’t have to search to find a plethora of Knock-Out roses in red and pink hues. Knock-out roses thrive in Louisiana, abundantly clear from the Thompson family’s rose garden. Also, peeking out in all their glory, it is hard to miss the vibrant colors of the Drift roses in peach, pink, red, and even white for a bit of contrast.

Additionally, they have included white dianthus and camellias to enhance their classic French white house. And it is hard to miss the white gardenias and pink camellias that existed before the Thompsons worked their own gardening magic. Italian cypress and cone-shaped holly give the gardens needed height. Jason’s clients, who happen to be The Sanctuary neighbors, receive the utmost attention to detail in every aspect of their lawn, beginning with lawn maintenance scheduled weekly. The environment and delineation of each property are considered when Jason starts to look at horticulture plans for a client’s lawn. He designs each yard specifically for the appointed home and its particular design. “Being able to significantly improve the appearance of a client’s home or business,” says Jason is his favorite aspect of the day-to-day. A significant improvement was the case for their home on Cardinal Lane, which merited a refresh for the house’s exterior.

Because of his vision and creativity, Jason came up with unique and beautiful designs for his garden but explains that a beautiful and well-maintained garden is attainable for anyone. The best advice he gives when maintaining a beautiful lawn is consistency. Jason advises getting your yard cut regularly, keeping it watered, increasing the watering in dry months, and remembering fertilizer. It has been a busy year for Jason and Grass Inc. Partnering with the Junior League of Greater Covington, Jason took on the position of landscape artist for the Designer Showcase Home. Also, recently, Jason was tasked with designing and implementing the landscape project for Jesuit High School’s Traditions Courtyard.

Based on their stunning outdoor space and Jason’s chosen profession, the Thompsons clearly have a deep appreciation for nature and the beauty of gardening. Their classic French-style home and gardens exude refined elegance and timeless beauty while prioritizing functionality and balance.
