KENTUCKY COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE SYSTEM
(re)create yourself here. In August 2008, a collaborative effort between West Kentucky Community and Technical College, the City of Paducah, and other regional interests created Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) to serve the region and anchor Paducah’s Lower Town Arts District through the creation of a world-class art school. Having quickly outgrown its initial rented facilities downtown, West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Paducah School of Art and Design has since completed a comprehensive campus totaling 46,200 square feet, including the Ceramics and Small Metals Building and Sculpture Building on Madison Street, and most recently the 2D and Graphic Design Building on Harrison Street in historic Lower Town. All of the school’s studios are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and resources supporting its programs in art, design and multimedia. PSAD launched its first Master Artists Workshops program in Summer 2014. These workshops continue to feature nationally acclaimed artists and educators serving both regional audiences and students from across the country. The Summer 2018 workshop program has expanded to include food photography, weaving, small metals, wood working, casting, and felting, as well. At Paducah School of Art and Design, a diverse mix of traditional and non-traditional students and studio artists from the community work side-by-side, sharing insights, experience and ideas to the mutual benefit of all. The Master Artists Workshop program and an expanding list of Community Education and youth programs continue to broaden our scope and make our resources available to additional audiences. Whether working toward an Associate in Fine Arts degree in Visual Art, an Associate in Applied Science degree in Multimedia, or simply seeking to expand your horizons, Paducah School of Art and Design is here to help make your vision a reality. West Kentucky Community and Technical College is a regionally accredited college and has been recognized by The Aspen Institute as one of the top ten community colleges in the nation four consecutive times, and twice as a Finalist with Distinction. PSAD’s Master Artists Workshop program contributes to Paducah’s emergence as a cultural destination and its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Craft and Folk Art, while promoting national recognition for PSAD. This fast-paced workshop covers the essentials about pitch, hammers, and chasing tools, and practice lining, embossing, planishing, and matting techniques in both lined and unlined repoussé projects. Emphasis is on volume development and surface refinement. Students will learn to make their own tools and to modify tools they may already have. This workshop prepare you for own chasing and repoussé practice.

In this three-day workshop students will learn the process of carving waxes, casting the waxes in metal and finishing the metal to create unique finger rings. Layout, carving, filing, and finishing your waxes will be demonstrated along with how to size wax to create a comfortable, yet intriguing ring. The design process will be an integral part of the class with several group and individual critique opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on creating a dynamic surface/structure for the piece. Students will then invest their finished waxes and learn the lost-wax casting process and cast their rings in sterling silver. Finishing techniques for the metal rings will round out the workshop. Basic skills required.

Shana Kohnstamm
July 6-8 Sculptural Felting: Soft & Sensational
Shana Kohnstamm
attended a wet-felting workshop in 2010 that ignited a passion for making beautiful, strange and technically complex wool sculptures. Since then, her work has been featured in fiber art magazines & books, juried and invitational exhibitions, and has earned awards in regional art exhibitions. She curated an international soft sculpture exhibit in Nashville in 2015 and was invited by Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts to teach Sculptural Felting in 2015 and 2018 workshops. Shana has explored a variety of creative careers, including stained glass design and fabrication, bead and jewelry making, theatrical painting, and even briefly apprenticed as an ocularist before turning her attention once again to making fine art.
This workshop will focus on the interplay of wet-felting and needle-felting techniques to produce soft sculpture. We will utilize the plasticity of the wool itself to build complex and dynamic forms, which will be needle-felted and then given a wet-felt finish. In addition, students will learn to make wet-felted pre-felt sheets, surface design elements and finishing techniques. No previous felting knowledge is required, but those students who already know one technique are encouraged to delve into the other. Demonstrations and structural problem solving will lead to independent exploration by the students. Please note that both techniques require repetitive arm and hand motion.

The key to a professionally set stone is good craftsmanship and a clean and well-finished bezel. During class you will learn to make a bezel for a stone of your choice using fine silver bezel wire. The bezel will be attached to a piece that has been designed and fired in this workshop. Afterward, you will attach the bezel to the rest of your piece and prepare for a second firing. Finally, the stone will be set and ready for the final touch. The result will have people wondering, “How did you do that?” So come and join me, and you too, will be setting stones like a pro.
