OVERNIGHT CAMP Separation Anxiety With Parents/Children – How to Prepare Easy Goodbyes: Help Your Child Manage Separation Anxiety Being away from their guardians for a time can be difficult for young minds to understand and accept. Because of their attachment, they can be uncomfortable with the idea. These feelings are known as separation anxiety. Worry not because this is normal; it is a part of childhood development. When kids learn how to manage their feelings, they can gradually realize how to become independent and do tasks alone. The following are some steps that you can do to help your kids cope.

Weeks before the camp, have them stay at their favorite relative’s house. You can also ask a close friend to take them on a half-day trip to the zoo. Gradually increase the frequency and duration of your separations. By doing these, you are building up their capacity to enjoy time without you and being comfortable with other people. Familiarity with their environment can ease your child’s anxiety. Bring them to the camp beforehand so they can get used to the area. Knowing that they’ve been to the place with you will remind them that it’s a safe space.

Establish Comfort Through Practice and Familiarity

Keep Goodbyes Short and LightHearted

Staying in a unknown place, such as the camp venue, can be scary for kids. Before you take your children to overnight or week-long activities, let your kids experience short-term situations of being away from you. For 30 minutes, or even up to a day, expose them in any secure environment where you are not around.

Saying goodbye can be tricky with children. To address this, you can establish rituals that mollify the situation. These can be reciting encouraging phrases, singing, or giving each other a certain number of hugs and kisses. They can remind your child that you love them and will return soon to pick them up.

Remember to keep the goodbye short and simple as dragging out your departure can increase anxiety. Be relaxed, composed, and smiling when bidding farewell. A smile can help children feel safe, and tells them that everything’s going to be okay, even without their parents. Most importantly, never leave without telling your kids so they won’t feel scared about your sudden disappearance. Reassure Kids With Doable Promises It’s integral to your children’s emotional and mental development that they know they can trust you. Telling them that you won’t leave the summer camp premises will only make them feel anxious when they find out you actually left. If they ask when you’ll be back, give them a specific date. For younger kids, set their expectations about your return in terms that they can understand. You can say, “When the moon rises in the sky,” or “After two nights of sleep.” Having a specific time to look forward to can help them alleviate their feelings about their new environment.

Talk About the Fun Activities at the Location Before you leave, lift their spirits by discussing the activities they’ll do at the camp. Talk about the fun things they can do and experience. If your kids are staying in a music camp, tell them that they’ll enjoy learning how to use instruments. You can also remind them of the friendships that they’ll build. These will re-focus their attention away from their worries. Let Them Discover Joy on Their Own at Summer Camps You can help your children develop skills and learn more about themselves by signing them up for summer camps. Whether you’re registering them for a traditional, academic, athletic, or theatre camp, they will surely enjoy their time during the break, even if you’re not with them. They can even make new friends. Before you know it, they will be ready to set out on their own adventures.
