Funeral Options of the Future

As Americans pay more and more attention to living a sustainable lifestyle, one future challenge that becomes apparent is the sustainability of our burial practices. In short: There’s only a certain amount of space available for burial, and yet the number of people living and dying increases every year. On top of that, burying embalmed bodies in elaborate caskets and burial vaults means that we’re constantly adding things to the earth that won’t biodegrade any time soon.

We began addressing this decades ago, when modern cremation was perfected, and it has gained in popularity to become the most popular option for body disposition in the 21st century. But even cremation has an environmental impact that isn’t tiny, due to the carbon emissions from a crematory.

So today’s thinkers are dreaming up new methods of body disposition that will address both the issue of space and the environmental impact. One of these new methods is already in use and hovering at the edge of the mainstream: water cremation, which is routinely used at major medical facilities like the Mayo Clinic, and is legal in a number of states. Others aren’t quite there yet, but they’re fascinating glimpses of what lies ahead for body disposition options. Here’s a look at a few of them.

Recomposition. The concept behind recomposition takes the idea of a green or natural burial one step further. In a green burial, where the body is buried without embalming and in a biodegradable container, the body eventually decomposes into soil. Recomposition is a method of composting human remains to speed that process up, allowing for a similar result without having to devote large tracts of land to green burial cemeteries.

It’s easy to feel a little initial discomfort with the idea of recomposition, but those who have embraced the idea find it beautiful to consider the body returning to become part of the earth. Currently, recomposition is only legal and available in Washington state, via a company called Recompose, which grew from an initial concept dreamed up and funded through a very successful Kickstarter campaign.

Promession. If recomposition can be compared to green burial, then promession is more akin to cremation, though it eliminates most of the carbon emissions that make cremation a little less eco-friendly. Where cremation involves fire, promession involves cold the body is first cryogenically frozen. At very low temperatures, the frozen body is so brittle that it can then be vibrated into very small particles. Those particles are then freeze-dried to remove any remaining moisture.

The final result can be buried and will quickly decompose.

Promession is the invention of Swedish company Promessa, and is not yet legal anywhere in the United States.

The mushroom suit. You might have seen the viral TED Talk in which an artist envisioned a suit that would encourage mushrooms to grow on a dead body. The mushrooms would serve as filters to eliminate the environmental toxins that exist in every body in the modern world, decomposing the body in a way that’s not just gentle on the earth but actively benefits it. Natural burial, creator Jae Rhim Lee notes, is a great start, but still allows some toxins, including mercury from dental fillings, to enter the earth. The mushrooms in the mushroom suit would take those toxins out of the equation.

While many who viewed the viral video probably dismissed it as an interesting but unrealistic conceptual art project, Lee went on to create the company Coeio and is actively manufacturing her Infinity Suits, redesigned since her TED Talk, and taking orders. In 2019, after the well-known TV actor Luke Perry died from a stroke at the age of 52, his daughter revealed that he was buried in a mushroom suit.

How to Buy a Burial Plot

Buying a burial plot is an important purchase and one that should be made prior to need, if possible. It is typically less expensive and less stressful to purchase a plot in advance, rather than needing to do so after a death has occurred A pre-paid plot will save your loved ones a great deal of stress, as they won’t have to hurriedly figure out your burial arrangements at the same time they’re mourning your loss.

It is important to do your research when buying a burial plot. You should ask any cemetery you are seriously considering to give you a price list and a copy of their regulations

Here are four of the most important questions regarding the purchase of a burial plot

1. Do I have to buy a burial plot from a cemetery?

Yes with an asterisk. Cemeteries directly sell the plots on their land, and most often, that’s who you’ll be dealing with

In rare instances, somebody may have bought a plot at one cemetery, and then decided to change cemeteries because they are moving or another reason, so they need to resell their first plot. But if an individual does offer to sell you their previously purchased burial plot, you should be aware that most cemeteries retain the right of first refusal, which means the owner of a plot must offer to sell the plot back to the cemetery before they can sell it to anyone else. Also, there are scammers out there who will try to sell plots that they do not own so you should be extremely cautious in dealing with anyone other than your intended cemetery itself.

2. What type of burial plots can I purchase?

The most common type is a single burial plot that will accommodate one person in a casket.

A companion plot will accommodate a couple, either in side-by-side caskets or double-depth caskets, which are stacked vertically. Double-depth caskets take up less space and are less expensive than side by side. (Before buying companion plots, you should consider what you will do with them if a couple separates.)

A family plot has room for multiple caskets for a single family. A family may purchase an area of the cemetery or a row of burial plots

Most cemeteries will allow you to bury cremated remains in an urn in a burial plot

One important point to remember, regardless of what type of plot you need: When you buy a cemetery plot, you are buying the right to be buried in the land, not the land itself You do not become the owner of the piece of cemetery land where the plot is

3. How much is a burial plot?

The cost of a burial plot varies widely and depends on multiple factors

A plot in a rural public cemetery may cost a few hundred dollars, compared to a plot in an urban private cemetery that may cost tens

of thousands of dollars

Like real estate, a prime location in a cemetery will sell for a higher amount. For example, a plot with the best views of a lake or river will cost more money.

Burial plots for infants or children will be less expensive, as will plots for cremated remains.

4.Are there other costs associated with buying a burial plot?

A headstone or grave marker is a separate cost from the plot

The cemetery will charge opening and closing fees for the gravesite. The fee is usually more expensive if your funeral is on the weekend.

Most cemeteries will require you to have a grave liner or burial vault for the casket This prevents the casket from sinking into the ground Burial vaults have a better seal and will be more expensive than a grave liner

Cemeteries will generally charge a perpetual care fee for the yearly maintenance of your burial plot. This may be added to the cost of the plot up front, or it may be billed annually.

How to Personalize a Themed Funeral

Whether you’re planning a traditional funeral or an unconventional one, you can make it more memorable by adding a theme. Clothing, floral tributes, décor, music, and food can all come together in a theme that reflects the life you’re honoring.

A themed funeral gives guests a chance to be involved even if they won’t be giving a eulogy or performing a song. By wearing a certain type of clothing or adding their own item to the décor, they can be an integral part of remembering the deceased.

Adding a theme to a funeral can be very simple Some themed funerals just concentrate on color. Perhaps you’ve seen an obituary that suggests funeral guests wear purple, or that they avoid black clothing in favor of bright colors. That’s a funeral theme, and it’s a simple but meaningful way to remember someone’s favorite color or bright spirit.

But you don’t have to keep a theme simple Some families go all out when planning a funeral around a theme that reflects their loved one’s interests Here are a few ideas for incorporating a theme into a funeral:

Sports

If your loved one was a super sports fan, especially if they had a favorite team, you’ve got an obvious theme to plan their funeral around. Guests can be asked to wear the team’s colors, and those who own team gear can wear that, too. Décor, such as floral arrangements, can focus on those colors as well, and a team logo can find its way into a floral basket or a table centerpiece at a reception. The photos of your loved one you display for the visitation or ceremony can include as many as possible when they were wearing team gear, attending a game, or playing a sport A fight song or the Monday Night Football theme could be played at a key moment – rather than feeling irreverent, it will probably make friends and family smile as they remember how that song got your loved one fired up.

Genealogy

If your loved one put a ton of work into investigating the family’s roots, celebrate that with a genealogy/heritage-themed funeral Family trees and other genealogical research can be displayed at the visitation or reception alongside the more traditional photo boards

The photo boards can also include any photos the genealogist collected of long-ago ancestors Symbols of the ethnic heritage discovered by the genealogist can also be part of the décor, whether that’s Swedish dala horses or Ghanaian kente cloth (or both!) Guests can be invited to wear clothing reflecting their own ethnic heritage, though not everyone will be able to pull this together on short notice

Travel

A world traveler can be remembered at home with a travel-themed funeral. If they had a specific favorite destination, focus the funeral on that. It could be a tropical theme, an Alpine ski theme, or anything else they loved. If they traveled to New Orleans for Mardi Gras every year, include beads and try to plan a jazz procession. If an annual fishing retreat to the North Woods was more their style, the reception room can reflect the look and feel of a rustic lodge. If they had a thirst to see everything with no one favorite place, make the theme an eclectic mix of items reflecting the diversity of their travel. If they collected souvenirs on their travels, these can be displayed at the visitation or reception.

Movies

A movie buff’s funeral can have a Hollywood theme Flowers and décor can reflect the glitz of the silver screen Some families create a video tribute for a funeral, scrolling through favorite photos and home movies of the deceased. You can bring a movie theme to this video tribute by interspersing scenes from the deceased’s favorite films with the personal photos and videos Music played in the service can include highly recognizable movie themes like the ones from “Star Wars” or “Harry Potter” or “Ghostbusters,” depending on your loved one’s personal favorites. Guests

might even enter the ceremony on a red carpet, just like the stars do.

Holidays

If your loved one counted down the days to Christmas each year, or planned their Halloween costume in January, honor that love by theming the funeral around their most beloved holiday. It doesn’t matter if it’s August – guests can be asked to dress to reflect the holiday of choice, and Christmas trees or Valentine’s hearts can adorn the room. If your loved one collected holiday decorations, those items should absolutely be included as you gather to remember their life

Favorite Music

A dedicated rock fan should almost certainly have rock music played at their funeral, but you can do even more than that. Each guest can be a part of the theme by wearing a t-shirt of their favorite band. If the deceased played an instrument, display it at the visitation or reception – this can be especially effective if they had a collection, such as several guitars Rock posters can adorn the walls If there’s a procession from the funeral to the cemetery, a vintage car from the deceased’s favorite era of rock and roll can lead the way.

Superheroes

If the deceased loved superhero comics and movies – or maybe if they always wanted to be a superhero – remember them with a super-powered funeral. Pallbearers can dress as caped crusaders. The funeral program can have the look of a classic superhero comic book. Clips from favorite Marvel or DC movies can play quietly as the family receives guests

That’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of ideas for themed funerals. Whatever your loved one was most passionate about, you can probably find a way to theme their funeral around it

What to Wear to a Funeral

Society’s dress code has rapidly changed in recent decades, and casualwear is acceptable in many places and situations. But what about funerals? Should we still wear black suits and dresses to a funeral, or can we take the “anything goes” approach that we do for many other situations?

The truth is somewhere in between. Most funerals don’t require us to wear our best clothing in the most somber colors – but it’s also rarely okay to show up in our most casual and brightly-colored outfits.

One important rule of thumb to keep in mind is that you’re there to share the grief of those mourning the deceased, not distract from it. It’s most polite to keep it fairly conservative with neutral colors and simple, respectful silhouettes.

There’s still plenty of room for confusion in our ever-changing world, so we’ll help by spelling out below what various people should and shouldn’t wear to a funeral.

What women should wear to funerals: You’ll never go wrong wearing a darkcolored dress, skirt suit, or skirt and blouse to a funeral If you prefer to be a little less formal, business casual in neutral colors is also appropriate A blouse or sweater with slacks or a skirt, or a pantsuit or dress, would be a solid choice to wear to a funeral Patterns, such as florals or stripes, aren’t inappropriate as long as they’re not too loud, bright, or busy Shoes should be fairly conservative, and keep in mind that very high heels may present a challenge if you’re walking through grass to a graveside service

What men should wear to funerals: The default for menswear at funerals has long been a conservative suit in dark colors, and this remains an ideal choice. You can also choose business casual, such as slacks or khakis and a polo shirt, sweater, or sport

coat in neutral colors without particularly flashy patterns. If you wear a tie, it should also be toned down – a stripe or other quiet pattern is preferable If possible, wear dress shoes that are in good condition

What children should wear to funerals: The rules are a little more relaxed for children, especially very young ones who can be fussy about getting dressed up But if at all possible, try to encourage your child to follow the guidelines provided for adults. Dark- or neutral-colored pants or skirt with a nice shirt or blouse would be best, along with dress shoes if possible Shorts can be acceptable for children in hot weather as long as they are also dark or neutral, and not jeans shorts.

What to wear to a summer funeral:

If you’re going to a funeral in very hot weather, a suit or sweater may well be just too much. You can dress appropriately for the weather while still looking respectful. For men, wear a polo shirt or short-sleeved button down with slacks; for women, choose a short-sleeved dress or blouse with skirt or pants.

What to wear to the funeral of a family member: If you’re in the deceased’s immediate family, what you wear helps set the tone for the funeral. Many people will be looking at you, so it may be best to keep it simple and conservative. It’s most appropriate for you to be overdressed compared to other funeral attendees But if you and the rest of the family feel that your loved one is best represented by more casual clothing, that’s a decision you can make together, and you can even share it with the people you’ve invited, if you want them to follow your lead

What to wear when the family has made specific requests for attire: Sometimes an obituary will specify that anyone who attends the funeral should wear a

specific color maybe the deceased’s favorite Other families request that people wear a certain type of attire, such as Hawaiian shirts or a favorite sports team’s gear When this is the case, it’s okay to suspend the usual rules if you wish to honor the request. Be sure to keep it respectful even as you do for example, if you’ve been asked to wear purple and the only purple thing you own is a pair of sequined short shorts, you should either purchase something new to wear or simply skip wearing purple and stick with the guidelines above

What not to wear to a funeral: Avoid the extreme-casual side of the spectrum— shorts, flip-flops, jeans, workout clothes, T-shirts--unless there are extenuating circumstances Avoid presenting a sloppy appearance; if a shirt is meant to be tucked in, you should tuck it in, and if shoes are scuffed or dirty, you should do your best to clean them up before the funeral or choose a different pair. On the other hand, just because something is formal, that doesn’t necessarily make it ideal, either. While having some color in your outfit is generally okay, bright, flashy, sparkly or slinky clothes will often be too much of a distraction

What to do if you’re still not sure what to wear: If you ever have any questions about what to wear to a particular funeral, try calling the funeral home that’s handling the services They’ve worked with the family, and they should have a pretty good idea of what’s going to be right for that funeral And keep in mind that it’s hard for anyone to know the perfect thing to wear at such a difficult time. Do your best to look put together, and know that your presence at the funeral and support of the family are the most important things.
