he Most Common Family Heirlooms By Linnea Crowther | Legacy.com

amily heirloom is any precious item that’s n passed down by a family member who died. Some are treasures in the most literal se: valuable antiques that could sell for ny thousands of dollars. Others have strictly September 13, that 2021 timental value, but the fact they’re not th much money doesn’t make Lakewood, COthem any less oved. Whatever they may be, family heirlooms jure memories of the special people who sed them along to us. Here are 18 of the most mmon—and most treasured. 1. Jewelry. Many families have a special ce of jewelry that has made its way through erations. It may be an engagement ring or a klace. Whether it’s got an expensive gem in it ot, there’s value in the stories. 2. Timepieces. Family heirlooms that tell e for us run the gamut from large to small. randfather clock might grace the homes of ny generations, or a pocket watch might be sed from father to son. 3. Furniture. A solid, four-poster bed or cozy November 19, Each 2021generation ker can last for centuries. ht refinish it to Boston, match theirMA own style or let it gracefully with its original finish. 4. Recipes. While objects can only exist in family member’s home at a time, everybody conjure up memories of a lost loved one by king their heirloom recipes. Handwritten recipe ds are especially sentimental, as a person’s dwriting can bring back vivid memories. 5. Letters, diaries, scrapbooks. Other dwritten memorabilia is sentimental, too. me families have saved personal notes an estor penned long ago—for instance, the love ers sent back and forth while Dad or Grandpa away at war. 6. Bibles and other books. Family bibles are n passed through generations, frequently with ection to record births, marriages, and deaths. 2021 ders alsoSeptember love to pass 20, down other books: editions, autographed copies, and even just Centennial, CO orite stories. 7. Military memorabilia. Whether a service mber in the family was killed in action or lived a g, rich life after their service, mementos of their vice are often saved and displayed: dog tags, dals, boots, and more. 8. Quilts and linens. A handmade quilt or dlework is an incredibly personal heirloom, inding its owner of all the hard work it took to ke it. Some people prefer to display an heirloom t on a stand or hang it on the wall, while others sure it by using it to warm their bed or couch. 9. Collections. If a loved one collected coins, rines, comics, or anything else, the collection kely to be passed down to the next generation. e: Many collections increase in value greatly November 23, 2021 r the years.

10. Family home or land. Real estate is a seriously valuable heirloom, in more ways than one. If a home is inherited and none of the heirs want to live in it, its sale can provide a comfortable amount of money. But when June 21,a home 2021is lived in for many generations, it becomes a powerful symbol Denver, CO of the family’s endurance. 11. Wedding gowns and other vintage clothing. Wedding gowns are very commonly passed down, worn by a daughter or granddaughter at their own wedding. But there’s more to heirloom clothing than gowns. We tend to collect a lot of favorite clothes over the course of our lives; after we’re gone, a loved one may wear them for vintage appeal or repurpose them into some kind of art. 12. Cedar chests, hope chests, steamer trunks. Trunks and chests were once essential pieces of a family’s home. Hope chests held the handicrafts a young woman made in anticipation of her marriage, while steamer trunks carried a person’s worldly possessions as they took a June 30, 2021 daring voyage overseas to immigrate to a new world. Denver, CO 13. Musical instruments. Musical instruments can be expensive and meticulously crafted items, and a well-made piano, clarinet, or violin can last a very long time. And a loved one’s music can be a powerful thing. 14. Photo albums, wedding albums, yearbooks. Recent family photos help us remember good times we had with a loved one, while antique photos show us the world of ancestors we never met. A parent’s school yearbook can be a wonderful glimpse into their young life. 16. Kitchenware. Quality pieces of kitchenware from previous generations can endure in a way that newer, cheaper purchases October 2021 never will. It’s common for 11, families to have and use a cast-iron skilletDenver, or copperCO kettle that had a place in Grandma’s kitchen decades ago. 17. Art. Heirloom art could be a priceless piece from a renowned artist, or it could be the deceased’s own creation, or something in between. Whatever kind of artwork it is, it’s a popular thing to bequeath. 18. Stories. Not all heirlooms are something you can touch. And some of the most cherished are completely intangible: the stories we share through the generations. Repeating those stories when loved ones gather is one way to keep them alive, but recording them guarantees we’ll remember them years in the future. ■

May the constant love of caring friends soften your sadness. May cherished memories bring you moments of comfort. May lasting peace surround your grieving heart.

Choosing a Cemetery By Linnea Crowther | Legacy.com If you’re planning a funeral and burial, you might be struggling to decide which cemetery is the right choice. Whether you’re pre-planning for yourself long before you’ll need it, or you’re quickly organizing a loved one’s funeral after their death, you’ll need to take a number of factors into account as you decide on a cemetery. Location. For some people, this will be the most important criterion. Does the cemetery you choose need to be close to home? If you’re making arrangements for a loved one’s funeral and you plan to visit their gravesite regularly, you’ll probably want to choose a location that’s easy for you to get to. If other family members will also want to visit, maybe you’ll consider a more central location. But convenience isn’t the only consideration when you’re thinking about location. For someone who moved around a lot as an adult but still has a well-loved hometown, maybe that hometown is the best place for their gravesite, a sentimental choice that can bring loved ones back to the homestead when they want to visit. Or maybe there’s another favorite place that’s neither a hometown nor a current location – a college town, an annual vacation spot – that has a beautiful cemetery that feels just right. Appearance. Some cemeteries have rolling hills and others are flat; some offer a park-like setting with plenty of trees while others keep the plantings to smaller floral selections. Maybe it matters to you whether the cemetery is a quiet oasis in a bustling city versus being surrounded by fields and forests in the countryside. Maybe you prefer the modern style of a memorial park, with only flat stones flush to the ground, or maybe you love the look of a traditional cemetery, with a wide variety of headstones in different shapes and sizes and colors. You can find a lot out about the appearance of a cemetery by looking at photos online or in a brochure. But if the beauty of the cemetery is very important to you, you might prefer to tour it in person to make sure it looks like the peaceful resting place you’ve been envisioning.

Availability of plots. There are many cemeteries that are entirely full or where available space is limited. This will need to be one of your first questions, and it may be that some of your preferred choices will drop off the list when you get your answer. Religious affiliation. For some, it’s important to be buried in a religious cemetery. Your place of worship may have a cemetery onsite or be affiliated with one elsewhere in the area. If not, ask your spiritual leader for recommendations of nearby cemeteries that align with your religious beliefs. Veteran status. If you are a veteran, or your loved one is, a national cemetery might be the right choice. Veterans and their spouses can be buried together in most national cemeteries, as can those who have served in the Reserves or National Guard, commissioned officers of the NOAA or Public Health Service, and certain others. If you think you or your loved one might qualify to be buried in a national cemetery, check with the Veterans Administration. In some cases, burial costs are waived for burial in a national cemetery. Of course, you can choose not to be buried in a national cemetery even if you’re eligible. It may be that other cemeteries you’re considering offer benefits for veterans, such as reduced fees, so check with them.

Burial options. If you prefer to be buried in a mausoleum, or to be cremated and have your ashes scattered in a cemetery scattering garden, or to have a natural/green burial, this will affect your choice of cemetery, because these options aren’t available at all cemeteries. Your funeral director can help point you toward a cemetery that has the burial option you’re seeking. Cost. Some cemeteries are more expensive than others, and certain desirable locations in a cemetery may be more expensive than other locations in that same cemetery. There are fees you may not have been aware of, such as opening and closing the grave (which are the industry terms for digging and refilling it). Other costs may include perpetual care, permits, and a grave liner or burial vault, which are required in some cemeteries. You might save money while pre-planning by buying a family plot for several people rather than choosing each of their gravesites individually. The cemeteries you’re looking at should be able to provide you with a full breakdown of costs, so be sure to ask for this if you’re trying to plan within a tight budget. Comparing the costs at a few cemeteries might reveal one option that’s substantially more affordable than others.

Restrictions. Some cemeteries have restrictions on what styles of monuments can be used, what types of floral arrangements and other memorials can be left at gravesites, and what you can plant at a gravesite. Be sure to ask about any restrictions at a cemetery if this is important to you. Upkeep. If you have time to visit cemeteries as you’re making your choice, take a look around to see how the cemetery is maintained. Has the grass been mowed, and trees and shrubs kept healthy and tidy? Are any structures and roadways in good repair? Has debris from storms or trash left by other visitors been picked up? If these things haven’t been kept up and the cemetery looks neglected, it might not be the right choice for you. You may also want to ask if cemetery management is responsible for maintaining the gravesites, or if it’s up to individual families. Check cemeteries’ websites, call and ask questions, and, most importantly if you have time to do it, visit cemeteries and see them for yourself. (You can get additional help from your funeral director, who’s sure to know details about the cemeteries in your area.)

Yes, You Can Have a Destination Funeral By Linnea Crowther | Legacy.com Destination funerals are a real thing. And for some people, they make perfect sense. If you spent your life traveling the world every chance you got, why not take friends and family to an exotic locale for your final sendoff? We’ve been hearing about destination weddings for years now. A happy couple dreams of tying the knot on a starlit beach or at a charming villa, and they want all their loved ones to be there. It’s one way to create an incredibly memorable wedding. But weddings aren’t the only rite of passage we want to remember forever. A wellplanned funeral is something that sticks with us in a good way. The perfect words from a eulogy, the song that brought everyone to tears, a dove release or fireworks show—these are moments that help us grieve and remember a special person for years to come. Why not set them against a stunning backdrop? A destination funeral isn’t the easiest kind of funeral service to pull off. It’s one that requires some advance planning, and it can be pricey, too. But if a destination funeral sounds like the perfect choice for you or your loved one, here are some things to keep in mind as you plan it. You can have a destination funeral in the United States. Foreign burial is tricky. Between travel logistics, prices, and varying national guidelines, you might decide that traveling abroad presents too many challenges to overcome. But

that doesn’t mean you can’t travel to have a memorable funeral in a stunning locale. Whether it’s the mountains of the Pacific Northwest or a sunny Florida beach or anywhere in between, you may well be able to find the ideal spot for a destination funeral without crossing any borders. Transporting human remains requires planning. If you want to transport a body via airplane for burial, you can. But you’ll need to do legwork on this: There will

certainly be permits to obtain and restrictions involved. Contact your preferred airline in advance to learn what you’ll need to do. Ashes may seem a lot easier to transport than a body, but you can’t just put them in your carryon and sneak them on the plane. Ashes do count as human remains. If you’re traveling abroad to scatter ashes, you must get a permit from the airline. Know what you’re doing with ashes. If your plan is to scatter a loved one’s ashes, you should also know in advance where you’ll be scattering them. Check into the laws and restrictions there and be sure

to obtain any necessary permits. If ash scattering is forbidden in your first choice of locations, don’t try to stealthily scatter them there anyway. Pick a second choice and go through the process to confirm it’s a viable option and you’re doing it legally. There’s other prep work to be done for ash scattering as well, such as making sure you know how to open the urn and get the ashes out. Work with a funeral director. For planning any funeral service, a funeral director is an incredibly useful

resource. With the added difficulty of planning a destination funeral, it would be all but impossible to get it all done without the help of a professional. A funeral director can help you navigate all those restrictions and permits. They can also work with you as you plan the service, and they can make connections with local funeral homes in the location you’re looking at. This will ensure the whole experience is as seamless and meaningful as possible. Plan the service. If you’re going to the trouble to travel far from home to have a funeral service, you should make it as perfect as it can

be. Knowing just how the service will go is an important part of this. Determine what readings and eulogies will be included. Designate people who will present any readings or perform any music, and make sure they’ll be able to travel for the service. Work with the owners of the funeral location to ensure it will be set up the way you want it. And know what the order of the service will be, so it will run smoothly for everyone. Pay close attention to the guest list. When a funeral takes place in the deceased’s hometown, it’s usually easy to get most of their friends and loved ones there. But traveling a long distance is a very different thing. Some people may struggle to afford plane tickets and hotel accommodations. Some may have illnesses or disabilities that make it hard for them to travel. Some may have obligations at home that they could leave for an afternoon to attend a funeral, but not for the duration of a trip. Families with small children might find it too challenging to travel for a funeral. For those who can’t attend, you could consider holding a second memorial service closer to home. Keep your wallet handy. The plain truth is that a destination funeral can be a lot more expensive than a funeral at home. Costs will vary widely depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing there, but the transportation costs alone are likely to leave a dent in finances. You may be able to help anyone with financial obstacles by setting aside money from the estate to pay for travel expenses to the funeral.

What is Water Cremation? By Linnea Crowther Legacy.com A relatively new option for body disposition after a death is water cremation, also known as resomation or alkaline hydrolysis. It’s considered an offshoot of cremation because, like cremation, it reduces the body to a fine dust that can be treated just as cremation ashes would be. But there are substantial differences between traditional cremation and water cremation. For water cremation, the body is placed into a machine along with water and lye, which is an alkali. (Alkalis are chemical compounds at the opposite end of the pH scale from acids.) The chamber is heated— anywhere from about 200 to 320 degrees—as well as placed under pressure. The body remains in the machine for four to 16 hours, depending on the temperature used. What remains at the end of the process is the bones, which have been made porous and easily crushable; any non-organic materials (dental fillings, acrylic nails, pacemaker, etc.); and a liquid that is much less alkaline than the lye that was initially added.

The non-organic materials are recycled or disposed of responsibly. The liquid can be used as a fertilizer in the garden, though it is often simply returned to the water supply under the guidance of environmental regulations. The bones are crushed to a finer powder than is typical of ashes from traditional cremation. This can then be scattered, buried, or kept, just like ashes. One of the main benefits of water cremation is that it’s substantially more eco-friendly than either traditional cremation or the standard 20th-century U.S. burial. Though traditional cremation is a better option for the environment

than the usual full-service American funeral that includes embalming, a heavy-duty casket, etc., it still generates carbon emissions. Those are eliminated with alkaline hydrolysis, which uses only a small amount of energy and leaves behind remains that will not be harmful to the earth, however they’re handled. There are some who feel uncomfortable with the process of water cremation, and this includes some religious bodies such as the Catholic Church. If you’re considering water cremation for yourself or a loved one, you may want to check in with spiritual leaders to determine if

your religion forbids or frowns upon the process. You’ll also need to determine if water cremation is legal in your state and available near you. It’s only legal in 15 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces as of this writing, and even in those states where it’s legal, there may only be a few scattered facilities that offer the service. The cost of water cremation varies, but you’re likely to find that it’s a little more expensive than regular cremation. This is typically still more economical, though, than a traditional full-service burial.

Planning a Party-Style Funeral By Linnea Crowther | Legacy.com “When I die, I don’t want my friends to have a funeral and be sad. I want them to throw a great party and play all my favorite songs and talk about all the fun we had.” Have you ever heard anyone say something like that? Or maybe you’ve said it yourself? It’s a popular sentiment these days. As our society becomes less religious, fewer people want a traditional church funeral. And for some people, the very best sendoff is one that they would have loved to attend themselves: a big party.

Provide food and drinks. If this is going to be a party, then you’ll need to feed your guests. You can use a caterer; the funeral home might be able to recommend one they often work with. Or friends and family can do the cooking. You might even have a potluck if that was the deceased’s style. Alcoholic drinks will be the right choice at some parties and not at others. You can base this decision on the deceased’s personal style. For some, a toast with a fine bourbon is practically a requirement. But Diet Cokes all around might be the best

Don’t forget the speeches. You may be throwing a party, but don’t forget who you’re honoring. It’s important to preserve some of the elements of a funeral service, and speeches are key. Friends and family will want to share their favorite memories of a life well lived. Just like at any other funeral, you can designate a few people to talk or you can open the floor to anyone who wants to step up and share a story. Keep the atmosphere light. This can be a tall order. But if you’re gathered to remember someone who expressly wanted to be remembered with

Whether you’re pre-planning your own funeral or making funeral arrangements for a loved one, you can plan a funeral that’s a lot more like a party. Here are a few tips to consider while you plan: Pick the right location. There are all kinds of places where you can throw a party. You can tailor your choice to be just right for the deceased. One option is to have a memorial service at a restaurant or bar. Someone who loves hosting parties might want to bring this funeral to their home. An unconventional venue like a bowling alley or an historic mansion might suit some people best.

way to honor a life for others. Keep your guests’ needs in mind too. Be sure to provide a variety of choices, and always include nonalcoholic options.

But don’t discount the possibility of having a party-style funeral at a funeral home. Many modern funeral directors are updating their buildings to include vibrant and comfortable spaces perfectly suited for this kind of funeral. One big benefit of opting for a funeral home is that it’s one of the most feasible places to have a funeral with the body present. If that’s important to you, you should shop around for a local funeral home that has the right kind of facilities for the party you’re envisioning.

Music is a must. One thing funerals and parties have in common is music, so your party-style funeral should absolutely include it. It could be in the background or front and center with live performances, or a mixture of both. But the most important thing is that you keep it focused on the deceased’s favorite tunes. Music provides a deep emotional experience that can be crucial to a funeral. Listening to songs that remind you of your loved one will help you grieve and remember, even as you happily celebrate their life.

a party, then you do your best to respect that wish. If you’re planning speeches ahead of time, ask any speakers to focus on happy stories. If it’s workable for you to wait a bit and not hold this gathering immediately after the death, the guests’ grief might not be as raw. Now, as hard as you may try to keep things bright, the party is likely to be tinged with sadness anyway. But you can use music and other atmospheric touches to help guests celebrate a life in a happy way. Consider offering party favors. You might want to send your guests home with something that will always remind them of the deceased.

If you’re honoring a music lover, you could offer a playlist of their favorite songs as a party favor, either on a burned CD or a thumb drive. Another easy party favor to put together would be a selection of a few favorite snacks. If everyone associated the deceased with peanut M&Ms or a specific kind of mints, send guests home with a few to munch on as they remember. For a more elaborate but deeply meaningful party favor, you could use a photo-printing service to create small photo books featuring a few memorable pictures of your loved one. If the deceased was creative, send guests home with a beautifully printed copy of a poem they wrote or a drawing they made. If they were wise, create a small booklet with their best life advice. A tangible thing to leave the service with, tailored to fit the person you’re honoring, will help friends and family remember and grieve. Be prepared for your own emotions. While you’re in the heart of this fun party remembering a wonderful person, you might not have time to feel much sadness. You might even be actively working to keep a smile on your face to honor your loved one’s wishes. But when the party is over and the guests go home, your grief may come rushing back. It’s not a disservice to your loved one to feel those feelings. Happy memories and devastating sadness are completely intertwined after a death. The party is a great way to remember a beloved person, but you honor them with your grief, too.

How to Have an Eco-Friendly Funeral By Linnea Crowther | Legacy.com Many of the elements of a traditional funeral come with an environmental impact—from embalming to cremation, and from cut flowers to huge limousines. Fortunately, there are many steps you can consider to help make a funeral and burial more environmentally friendly. For starters: Our bodies are designed to biodegrade, but common burial practices throw a wrench in that process. When planning a funeral, consider these alternative approaches to body disposition: Choose a sustainable and biodegradable casket. Most of the caskets you’ve seen are full of metal, paint or varnish, polyester batting, and other materials that won’t break down quickly, if at all. Lessen your impact on the earth by choosing a natural wood casket made with tongue-in-groove joints—or a shroud of natural fabrics, which will readily biodegrade. Take it a step further by opting for a very sustainable material for a casket, such as fast-growing bamboo or woven willow. You may choose to skip the embalming. Embalming preserves a body for an open-casket viewing and funeral, but it also slows the decomposition process and adds carcinogenic chemicals to the burial site. And it’s not necessary. You can achieve short-term preservation with ice and refrigeration, or you can plan a memorial service without the body present to eliminate the need for preservation. Support a green cemetery. If you’re choosing burial with no embalming and in a biodegradable casket, a green cemetery is the perfect place to do it. These specialized burial grounds are reserved for natural burials. The bodies laid to rest there enrich the earth, rather than polluting it. Green cemeteries tend to be parklike or forested settings, where you can remember your loved one in the serenity of nature. And they’re maintained without the use of harmful pesticides and herbicides, often with soil-enriching native plants. Consider cremation. While cremation isn’t the absolute eco-friendliest option for body disposition, it’s much more environmentally responsible than the traditional U.S. burial, and it’s readily

available everywhere. If other options don’t appeal to you or aren’t available near you, cremation is a great way to make a funeral greener. Look into water cremation. Water cremation, also called resomation or alkaline hydrolysis, is a newer body disposition alternative with miniscule environmental impact. The body is broken down using an alkaline liquid, and the result is a substance similar to cremation ashes but without the emissions created by burning. You can scatter, bury, or save them just like cremated remains. However, water cremation has only been legalized in certain states so far, and even in those, there aren’t many facilities yet. You’ll need to do some research to determine if it’s an option for you. Aside from these alternative burial practices, there are several eco-friendly actions you can take regardless of how the body may be handled. Use a natural grave marker. Although stone is a natural material, the process of creating a traditional headstone—having a piece of granite quarried, cut, polished and carved by machines—leaves a big carbon footprint. You can take a pass on this pollution by planting a tree or bush at your loved one’s gravesite instead of

a headstone. If you choose cremation instead of burial, you can add a memorial planting to your own land and improve the air quality even as you commemorate your loved one. Request local flowers or trees planted in memory. Rather than cut flowers shipped long distances, help your funeral guests find locally grown flowers that are currently in season, by suggesting an eco-conscious grower or two in your area. Alternately, instead of sending sympathy flowers, you can have memorial trees planted in your loved one’s name. Through Legacy. com, well-wishers planted more than a million memorial trees last year— helping to beautify the earth, produce more fresh air, and reforest state and national lands. Keep funeral programs greener. Many funerals include printed materials, such as a program or mass card. One way to make these ecofriendly is to have them printed on recycled paper using soy or vegetable ink. Another option is to skip the printed funeral program altogether. The order of services can be projected from a laptop or read aloud as the service goes along. Serve local and organic food. If you’re planning a repast or reception

with a meal or snacks, make it more sustainable by choosing local or regional foods. A memorable farmto-fork dinner can be created with local and organic produce, meats, and cheeses. Don’t use disposables at the meal. Whether you’re serving a full meal at a repast or offering finger foods at a reception, you’ll make it more sustainable if you’re prepared to wash your tableware rather than throwing it away. Avoid plastic utensils, paper plates, and paper napkins in favor of silverware, ceramic plates, and linens. Carpool or eliminate driving. At many funeral services, friends and family drive their cars from the funeral location to the cemetery. Sometimes a long line of cars travels miles across a city in procession. There are several ways to make this greener. One is to arrange carpools for this procession, fitting as many people as possible into fewer cars. If possible, family and guests should drive their own cars rather than ride in gas-guzzling limos. Another option is to skip the long procession altogether: Hold the entire ceremony at one location and make the burial private for immediate family only, or plan for the entire service to take place at the graveside.

What You Need to Know About Hospice By Jessica Campbell Legacy.com Death is an inevitable fact of life. While we can’t opt out of dying and death, we do have choices we can make at the end of life for ourselves and our families. One of these options is hospice care. Hospice offers a variety of benefits to those facing terminal illness, not only to people who are dying, but also their loved ones. In this guide we will answer common questions about hospice and palliative care and give you the answers you need to help you make informed decisions at the end of life. What is hospice? Hospice provides comprehensive care and support for persons with life-limiting illnesses and those who love them. Whether at the patient’s home, a nursing home, or a dedicated hospice facility, hospice includes medical care with an emphasis on pain management and symptom relief (palliative care). Additionally hospice professionals and volunteers address the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient and the whole family. Who is hospice for? Hospice can be for anyone facing a life-limiting illness. Typically for persons within 6 months of death, hospice services are available to patients with any terminal illness or of any age, religion, or race. How will you know when it’s time for hospice? There is no one right answer to this

dilemma. It’s a decision each patient and family must make for themselves. Hospice is designed to make the end of life easier, but choosing hospice doesn’t equal giving up on life. For many, hospice is about living the best life possible in the time remaining. How do you choose a hospice provider? Hospices offer critical care and support to patients and families. But are some hospice providers better than others? What makes a good hospice? To help you find the right hospice for you and your family, here are questions you need to ask: Home care or in-hospice care: Which is right for my family? Hospice care takes place wherever the need exists. Most often, hospice

services are provided in the patient’s home. Recognizing that terminally ill people may live alone, or with family members unable to provide care, many hospices coordinate community resources to make home care possible. Or they help to find an alternative location where the patient can safely receive care. Each patient-family unit is unique, and hospice care accommodates your specific needs. How much does hospice cost? How will I pay for hospice? Financial worries can be a major burden for a patient and family facing a terminal illness. Fortunately, most patients pay little or nothing for hospice care. In the United States, hospice care costs are covered by Medicare, Medicaid (in most

states), and the Veterans Health Administration. Additionally, many private insurance companies provide some coverage for hospice care. For patients without hospice insurance, financial accommodations are made based on ability to pay. What is palliative care? How is it different from hospice? Palliative care is an important component of hospice care, helping to manage pain and improve the patient’s quality of life. Palliative care focuses on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness such as heart failure, cancer, or dementia. While associated with end-oflife care, palliative care can be helpful at any stage of illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.
