With the excitement of the Home & Garden Show and Spring around the corner…now’s the time that many people are thinking about building a home or starting on some home remodeling projects. But where do you start? Maybe you just want to re-do your kitchen floor or are looking for someone to take care of your lawn this summer; or maybe you’re even thinking about building a new home in the future. First stop - Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association! Your first stop should be to our membership directory or call our office at 715-835-2526 and we can help get you started. All of our members undergo a screening process, must abide by our code of ethics, and provide services in the home building industry. We can get you a list of reputable contractors or businesses in the area. We have members who can help you through every step of the process. It’s not just the builders and the contractors; we have members who can help you through each step of the home buying, building, or remodeling process. • Not good at interior design but want a refresh? We have designers who are happy to help you determine what you like and can help you make decisions on your next room re-do. • Need to list your home? Or maybe you need a lender for the home you plan to build? We have realtors & mortgage lenders. • Toilet leaking? Checkout our list of plumbers in the area. • Sick of shoveling show? We have many members who provide snow removal services. • We have over 300 members providing services from home building to remodeling to banking, plus many more. Talk to a few people. The most important piece of advice we can give when starting a new project is to talk to more than one contractor. Find who you ‘click’ with, which contractor or business seems to understand you and your needs, and you’ll want to get pricing quotes from at least two contractors. It’s important to make sure your contractor has a contract that outlines the expectations on both sides and that you and your contractor are clear about expectations and timelines. And of course, visit the 2016 Home & Garden Show where you can talk to hundreds of different vendors. Every participant is a member of the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association and offers products and services for your next home project. Plus, there are educational seminars to help you learn more!

A Closer Look at the Costs of Building a New Home

If you’re in the market for a new home, you may be wondering about the factors that contribute to the total cost of the home. The National Association of Home Builders recently published a Cost of Construction Survey, which details the various costs of building a typical new singlefamily home. Many of the results show that costs have remained consistent in recent years.

The survey reaffirms the steady progress of our economy since the Great Recession, as home values have gradually risen. And, in each year since 2009, the size of singlefamily homes has grown as well. The average home in 2015 had 2,802 square feet of finished space, compared to 2,402 in 2009. The size of the lot has increased significantly too, jumping to 20,129 square feet (nearly half an acre) in 2015, from 14,359 square feet just two years ago.

According to the 2015 survey, the biggest single component of a home’s price is construction costs, which accounts for 62 percent of the cost. Splash Spring Color Inside and Out with Flowers

Tips on the best flowers to use in early spring Though petunias aren’t hardy enough to keep outdoors below freezing without losing their booms, they can withstand cool weather days if you bring them inside for the night.

The snow and cold of February can make us yearn for the showy flowers of summer. How soon can you really enjoy some springtime blossoms? At the printing of this article, yes it is definitely too cold outside! But as the days get longer and temperatures climb you can enjoy some early spring color inside and out.

So what’s the solution to our craving for spring color? Flowers in containers! Portable pots can decorate the front step or a couple places on the patio with a burst of spring color. If the night temperatures drop below freezing, the container can be brought into the house or heated garage and the plants be saved.

Still, using summer plants can be difficult because some days are cold too. Early containers should utilize plants that don’t freeze easily. Violas and pansies are flowers that can withstand cold temperatures and still look good. Available in many colors, we have seen pansies and violas withstand 22 degrees without any noticeable change to the plants or flowers. We have seen the snow cover pansies and violas and the plants suffered no difficulty or die back. The deer are waiting for such a feast, so it’s difficult to nurture a tulip bed in our area. Daffodils and hyacinths on the other hand don’t seem as tasty to the deer and rabbits. Since daffodils and hyacinths grow from bulbs, they require a cold period for a number of weeks before blossoming. They are an early spring bloomer you will have to plant next fall.

Another feast for the eyes in early spring is the sorbet orange duet viola.

A second tier of annuals that don’t freeze easily includes annual dianthus, snapdragons, and many of the varieties of petunias. These plants will be able to withstand 25 degrees if they are hardened to those temperatures. Sometimes the flowers will freeze, but the plant continues to grow. These are plants that need to be watched more carefully. An early bloomer and stalwart cool weather English daisy can be potted for warm spring days and planted once the nights don’t dip below freezing for delicate perennial beauty.

ground for summer; a good way of getting more for your money!

Select your favorite colors to brighten a spot on your deck. Violas are a good cool weather plant that can later be planted into a bed.

Another set of plants that could lend themselves to containers for the do it yourselfers are a number of perennials that flower in early spring. You can usually find primulas, English daisies, helleborus, or creeping phlox with flowers at a greenhouse or garden center for a striking spring container that could later be planted in a flower bed to establish during the summer. Then, lo and behold next spring, flowers are in the flowerbeds as well! A third possibility doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t include the need to watch the outdoor temps. Get flowers that can do well indoors for a period of time. My favorite is the hiemalis begonia. This plant needs a greenhouse to get it growing and to flower, but the plant and flowers can last a number of weeks on the dining room table. This is not a plant for outdoors early in spring. It will freeze dead at 32 degrees, but does well in low light in a house and the flowers last a number of weeks. When the outdoor temps stay above freezing, this plant is good in the shade either in a container or in a flower bed. Other plants that will also do well indoors in early spring are the streptocarpella, impatiens, and sunpatiens. Fuchsias and other begonias could also be added to this list, but tend to drop flowers and require much cleanup for indoors. Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winter will be here for a few more months, but the beauty of spring can be growing inside your home in just a few short weeks with a container of color!

Your 2016 Home Maintenance To-Do List Homeownership is the American dream, but it’s also a lot of work. Your home is a significant investment and requires a consistent level of upkeep to maintain its efficiency and to protect its value. As you make new resolutions for 2016, set aside some time to build a schedule of your ongoing home maintenance duties. Creating a calendar of anticipated maintenance needs will help you remember key milestones and better prepare for any big expenses. The following examples of typical home maintenance should be completed at least annually. Consider your home’s specific needs to determine the relevance and timing of each task, and mark your calendar appropriately. In the spring: Inspect the roof for snow damage. Examine the condition of glazing compound, caulking, and interior and exterior paint. Check for broken glass and screens in windows and storm doors. (It’s also a good idea to do this the fall.) Look for evidence of termites such as sagging floors and ceilings or dry, brown tunnels in the ground near the home’s foundation. Seed and feed the lawn, plant annuals and trim perennials that need pre-growth pruning. In the fall: Add mulch around perennials that need protection from winter weather.
