Current workout trends emphasize getting the most impact from condensed, focused and intense exercise routines. Your kitchen can be designed to do the same, making it the hardest working room in your home. With work, school, and activity schedules putting the squeeze on family time, it’s more important than ever to do your homework when planning a new or remodeled kitchen to ensure the safest, most efficient use of space and your efforts. Who hasn’t experienced the frustration of trying to work in a poorly configured kitchen… refrigerator doors that hit a side wall, dishwashers without
enough standing room to unload them anywhere except onto the countertop, and those shallow cabinets over refrigerators which are beyond reach and invite stacks of paper goods, baskets, or serving bowls in front of the doors? Thoughtful appliance placement and sizing of cabinets can solve many work-zone headaches even before you consider the wealth of specialized pull-outs and inserts on the market. Tucking a tall, narrow pull-out pantry cabinet between a side wall and the refrigerator will boost dry goods storage while ensuring enough refrigerator door swing for full access to vegetable bins and deli drawers. Using a 24”
deep cabinet over the refrigerator can create an easy-to-reach zone of vertical slide-in storage for cookie sheets, baking pans, and larger cutting boards. Skinny base cabinets also offer great vertical storage for these items. Adequate standing and landing zones are essential next to all appliances. Landing zones refer to countertop areas which will provide space to set down a hot casserole removed from an oven or microwave, bags of grocery items to refill the fridge, or those cold ingredients as you pull them out to compose an evening meal or quick breakfast. While diagonal corner placement of ovens and dishwashers looks attractive,
bending forward to reach into them while lifting heavy dishes can be harmful to your back. If a dishwasher must be placed close to a corner or side wall, make sure that you have at least 21” of floor space to stand alongside the open door while filling or emptying it. Don’t overlook placement logic in planning your kitchen. A refrigerator placed near a dining or cooking area will provide easy access to ingredients, beverages, and condiments. In turn, microwaves placed near refrigerators are handy when reheating leftovers or defrosting items. Morning coffee will be a breeze if your filters, mugs or thermos cups, and other supplies are housed in a cabinet near the coffee maker. If a primary traffic area, such as a patio door, is near your kitchen, keep in mind that frequent traffic to the refrigerator may be safer if it does not pass through primary work zones such as the sink or cooking surface. Once you’ve decided on the best arrangement of work zones and appliances in your space, consider maximizing the storage potential within your cabinets. Lazy susans have evolved nicely from the plastic tray and metal spindle set-ups of yesterday. Newer versions are mounted on a solid shelf, are spindle-free, and can even have 6” deep side walls, ensuring that items won’t tip over and fall out of reach. If it’s absolutely necessary to have a blind corner base cabinet and you can allow at least a 15” wide door opening for access, wood or metal swing-out assemblies will enable you to draw all the items stored in that hidden corner out into the

walkway area while still on their storage trays or platforms. No more unloading the whole cabinet to find your roaster lid! While many of us have used rollout trays for base or pantry cabinets to discourage lost items in the back of deeper cabinets, wire pullouts specially shaped to work around the plumbing in a sink base are also available. Appliance garage doors can swing upward in front of your wall cabinets, eliminating troublesome
roll-up tambour doors or clearing the countertops to accommodate a swinging door. And don’t forget that wider heavy duty drawers are today’s favorite option for storing bulkier pots and baking dishes, offering single step operation and easier lifting. Careful planning will ensure that your new kitchen works hard, making cooking more enjoyable and cleanup hassle-free. Curing the

Maybe you have said ... or perhaps you have heard someone say “I can’t grow plants, I’ve got a black thumb.” I’m here to say “Take heart!” No one is born with a green thumb. All great gardeners, all good gardeners, even those who dabble at gardening and are successful learn to be gardeners. Gardening is learned from someone, or by a painful trial and error process. Let’s take some of the pain out of your path to successful gardening with a few easy steps to green up that thumb of yours. Success with plants begins by choosing the environment in which a plant thrives. A Green Thumber usually first decides where they want a plant. Then they observe the light conditions that area receives. At what time of day does the sun shine directly on that area? Morning sun is less harsh than direct sunlight in the late afternoon. Greenhouses and Garden Centers categorize plants into three sunlight categories, full sun plants, part sun (aka part shade plants), and full shade plants. There are only a handful of plants that can thrive in all three conditions. Most plants do best in one of the three categories. Knowing the amount of light a plant likes is important because light is one of the triggers to flower production. Secondly plants need a good root environment. Most varieties of plants flourish in a well aerated type of soil. Heavy soils don’t allow air to get to the roots as easily, slowing plant growth. Faced with summers as short as they are, we want plants to grow as fast as they can. Soils can be lightened with sand. Compost is also a good soil amendment along with peat moss. Soil chosen for plants that are grown in containers follows the same guidelines with one additional consideration. The soil needs to be light and have good aeration, but also have good water holding capacity. 23

Aeration and higher water retention capacity work against one another. Reach a happy medium using peat moss to hold water and perlite and composted bark to provide aeration in container soils. Soil for a container is not the place to try to save money. Buying good professional potting mix with these three ingredients provides a root environment for quick, healthy growth. The most critical issue with plants is the amount of moisture available. This is the aspect of growing plants that separates the Green Thumbers from the Black Thumbers. It is good to water plants immediately after planting whether you plant in the ground or in a container. You should put about one inch of water on the plants. The water needs to soak in down around the roots of the plant and settle the soil around the roots. Then let the soil surface dry

before watering again. More plants are probably killed by eager gardeners through overwatering than any other mistake. If you are in a situation where the plant begins to wilt before the surface of the soil dries, fill a spray bottle with water and mist the leaves of the plant every couple of hours. This usually happens in hot sunny weather. Once night falls, the plant leaves will perk up and misting isn’t needed. Lift containers after they have been watered fully to get an idea of their weight. Containers lighten as they dry and after a while you can get an idea of when to water a container by its weight. Following these three rules will turn a black thumb a nice shade of light green. Your plants should do well for a couple of months in summer. To turn that thumb a deep green and

Contributed by Sylvia Weaver Reclaimed lumber is a fascinating field for exploration. The sources for this lumber vary from barns and agricultural buildings to commercial structures and homes. One of the most fascinating aspects of reclaimed lumber is its many variables. Each project is unique in itself because of the type of building the lumber came from, how the lumber was originally prepared and what kind of usage and exposure it received. This makes it a very versatile accent point when used in countertops, interior doors, beams, posts, and railings. The largest area of usage is in furniture and cabinetry as well as paneling and flooring. One of the main selling points of reclaimed lumber is its delightful patina. Decades of aging produce a mellow color tone very difficult to duplicate. Wood from the interior of a building tends to retain some vestige of its original coloring while wood that has been exposed to the weather will usually take on soft shades ranging from blue-gray to deep brown. Numerous species of wood make it possible to match any dĂŠcor. Colors range from nearly white to deep shades of ebony, from sunny yellow-gold to fiery red-orange.

WITH RECLAIMED LUMBER, COMES A FEELING OF NOSTALGIA.
The aura of eras past is captured in beams shaped with an adze or circular marks made by a buzz saw. The tale of quiet endurance and longevity is told in scuffs, scrapes and scratches which modern milling can’t totally obliterate. Knots and nail holes give us a connection with virgin forests and a slower-paced generation. Reclaimed lumber flooring is an awesome choice for any room of your home. This durable form of flooring offers variations suitable for any design scheme. Varying board widths and installation styles, to say nothing of color schemes, give you plenty of options. Traditional installation is, of course, simply vertical or horizontal lines; however, there are so many more options open to you. Are you looking for a different slant? Have your flooring installed diagonally. Want to escape from straight lines across your floor? Have your flooring cut in shorter lengths and applied parquet-style. Can’t decide what wood specie or size you like? Find a supplier who will provide you with a mixed wood package that will give you lots of color variation as well as different widths of lumber. Looking for something totally different? How about end grain tiles? This absolutely amazing design is created by slicing lumber in three quarter inch thick slabs and then applying them to your floor like tile. You can choose to have grout showing between the tiles or apply them one against another. The effect is truly unique. Caring for reclaimed wood flooring is basically the same as caring for other wood flooring, but a lot will depend on the finish you choose and the amount of traffic in the room. If you choose to go with a natural look and simply oil your floor, you may face touchup every two to three years, especially in high traffic areas. To touchup an oiled floor, simply sand it lightly, clean it and mop on a fresh coat of oil. Polyurethane finishes can be applied in layers and will give you a longer-lasting, easier-cleaning option, although the glossy finish may detract from the natural look of the lumber. Because of its one-of-a-kind qualities reclaimed lumber adds a special flare to any type of design. Talk to a designer or check out your options on-line or at your local library.
