All Good Things Must come to an end Every Autumn that thought crosses my mind. Even though it is my favorite season (my nickname for both my husband and son is pumpkin!) - as a gardener, Fall is a bittersweet time for me. I start mentally preparing myself for the coming months without my flowers. Fortunately, my melancholy only lasts for a little while. I quickly remember that the upcoming “hibernation” months are when I snap into planning mode. Whether it is for the Association’s Signature Events or my own gardens, there is always room for improvement – a chance to make things different and better. Speaking of different, the CVHBA took on a unique community service project this year (see the article the Phoenix Park bathrooms on page 26). I had a very special opportunity to get an inside look at the building industry throughout this ninemonth experience. From getting bids to working out construction schedules, my members allowed me to be “one of the crew” – and I LOVED it. A very special thank you to everyone that worked on this project including the City’s Parks Department, our dedicated members, and the CVHBA staff. We had the official grand opening a few weeks ago, and I am already missing the daily conversations with my task force chairs Cody and Jeff. However, now that the project is done, I have more time to look for our next grand adventure…

The Family Kitchen

10 tips to make it all work

Contributed by Sylvia Weaver of THORCRAFT Custom Kitchens

Over the years the use and design of kitchens has gone through some major changes until today the options are endless. How will you choose the kitchen that’s perfect for you? Here are ten tips for planning your dream kitchen.

1

Remember it is your kitchen.

3

Your kitchen needs to meet the needs of your family. Do you want a desk area for planning menus and paying bills? A snack bar for meals on the run. A prep sink? A breakfast nook? Consider your lifestyle and plan accordingly.

You are the one who will live with it, work in it and pay for it. Your kitchen should fit your budget and lifestyle. Be willing to hear new ideas but remember you will need to make the final decision.

2

Take a critical look at the kitchen you’re currently using.

Unless you’ve moved quite recently this kitchen defines your work habits. Are there any awkward spots in your work space? For example; you always have to walk around the table to get things from the fridge. What do you like about your kitchen? Maybe the answer is very simple – NOTHING. On the other hand there may be features you really like and are definitely interested in keeping.

Think about where you’re going.

4

Collect ideas.

Arm yourself with a notebook for organizing ideas and questions then start collecting. Clip articles and photos from magazines. Get ideas online and print them out. Visit home improvement stores to collect paint and countertop samples. Carry your camera and snap pictures of things that catch your eye. Don’t be too quick to discard ideas; at this point the focus should be gathering ideas. Make notes so you’ll remember what caught your eye, i.e. general layout, style of doors, tile backsplash.

7

5

Be space conscious. A sprawling island may be a lovely defining point between the kitchen and a dining or seating area in a house with an open layout. The same island may over power a more closed off kitchen. Don’t throw the ideas away just bear in mind that they may need to be altered. An excellent visual guide is to use tape to outline cabinets on the floor or wall. You can then consider the affect from different angles and get a better feel for how things will actually shake out.

6

Dare to be different. Who says you have to follow the dictates of fashion. This is your kitchen go with what appeals to you. It’s OK to mix –n- match. Painted cabinets can be a lovely contrast to stained ones. A few distressed cabinets can give a homey feel to a more formal kitchen. Let your kitchen reflect your tastes.

8

7

Contrast or compliment. Do you envision yourself working in a cool and elegant kitchen – all soothing pastel shades? Maybe your dream kitchen is very formal with rich glossy wood tones. Whatever your dream, countertop, tile and accessories can help to produce the impression you want. Keep your eyes open. Well-chosen accessories can be the difference between monotonous and magnificent.

8

Let in the light. Natural light is lovely anywhere but depending on the size and placement of your kitchen it may be hard to incorporate a lot of windows. Since lighting can make a huge difference in the over-all appearance and feel of your kitchen you will want to make sure you get it right. Painted cabinets, especially very light shades take on different hues depending on the amount of light directed on them; while dark, flat paints absorb light. If you are uncertain about lighting ask your kitchen designer or builder for help.

9

Budget. Does this seem like a bad time to bring up budgeting? After telling you to collect lots of ideas you may feel like groaning at the thought of budgeting. Unfortunately most of us don’t have unlimited funds at our disposal so we’ve got to budget. Ultimately you will need to decide on the dollar amount but keep in mind that you can compromise. Is granite countertop high on your wish list? Consider offsetting the cost of granite countertops with an inexpensive wood specie. Ask your designer to show you samples of different woods and stains. Don’t be shy. Tell your designer where you’d like to splurge and ask for tips on cutting costs in other areas.

10

Find a team. Probably one of the most important keys in planning your kitchen is finding people you can work with. If possible talk to former clients of the designer you’re considering. Find out if you can expect prompt, friendly service and cabinetry that meets your expectations. A knowledgeable cabinetry team can turn your dream into breath-taking reality.

in may 2009, christine and Barry moullet purchased their dream home on Lake chetek. upon purchase, they also knew they would be undertaking a significant remodeling project. While a large-scale remodeling project may intimidate many people, the moullets welcomed the challenge and looked forward to the end result. although the couple currently lives in orlando, florida, they are originally from the Bloomer-area. and, both Barry and christine wanted a place near

their families so their daughter could get to know her relatives. eventually, Barry and christine hope to enjoy the home during retirement. “We had been aware of the house for awhile. in fact, we waited for 10 years until the previous owner was ready to sell it, christine explained. The home, a family-owned residence for several generations, had originally been a cabin that was added on to several times. for this reason, the moullets knew they would need to remodel the home to fit their needs. 13

To start the remodeling process, the moullets hired an architect from architectural Design Group to help them with the design they envisioned. after the design was approved, the couple met with six different contractors that were vying for the construction job. eventually, the couple settled on using royal construction for the remodeling project. “We heard great reviews about them, their references were impeccable, and they had previously worked with clients that were great distances away,” christine said. as with any remodeling project, there were unexpected occurrences that happened during the process. for instance, they were unable to do certain things they wanted to simply because the home was located on the water. however, much to their delight, they were able to save the foundation and the chimney of the original structure. “We were fortunate to work with a very professional group of craftsmen; everyone we worked with was amazing,” Barry said. in fact, the couple wanted a brand-new home, but they 14

wanted it to look 100 years old, essentially designing the home with fine workmanship that is difficult to find today. During the remodeling project, many local subcontractors were utilized, including those from Bloomer, new richmond, eau claire, and other area towns. christine believes the subcontractors were excited to work on the project, simply because they were able to do things they don’t normally do, like specialized carving and utilizing unique materials. “i am really amazed at the talent of woodworkers in this area,” christine said. While the workers busily remodeled and removed the existing building materials, the couple was sure they wanted to give back. “We were adamant about salvaging as much as possible,” christine said. The 100-year old hardwood floors were saved and utilized during the remodeling project. “We literally took down the house piece by piece, but it worked well in the long run,” she continued. in fact, they were able to donate much of the structure, including giving the windows to Luther Park Bible camp. The entire remodeling project took eight-and-ahalf months to complete and was finished in July 2010. “staying on that timeframe was shocking,” christine said. This is especially true given the level of surprises during the building process. The timeframe was also maintained because of the number of people working on the project. “at one point we had 50 people working at the house,” Barry said. “We really felt good about the project and the workers involved; it kept people working during a season and time when they may not have been working otherwise,” Barry continued. although the moullets know they accomplished a large remodeling project, they would not be afraid to remodel again. however, they do have several

tips for homeowners thinking of starting a remodeling project. “set your budgets and your expectations; be prepared because it will cost more than you think,” Barry said. “find out exactly what you want and be sure to get at least three bids on everything, ensuring that the bids cover the same things,” he continued. Because the couple did not need to live at the house during the renovation process, they were able to work on the entire house at one time. however, they caution that homeowners should consider remodeling only one room at a time if they live there during the construction process. most of all, the couple recommends planning the remodeling project at the beginning stages. “it’s worth the time to plan and prepare for a renovation project. stay patient—your dream will come true,” Barry said. Both Barry and christine hope others will consider remodeling as a way to revitalize their homes. “i really believe people should consider remodeling; changing a little bit can change the entire character of the home,” Barry said. Likewise, the remodeling process has never bothered christine. “remodeling doesn’t scare me at all. in fact, i’m already teasing Barry that i would like to work on the garage,” she concluded.

Conquering

the Clutter ! A simple can-do to organizing

contributed by nancy rothwell, professional organizer

T

hink about the last time you misplaced something & could not find it. how often does that happen to you? Would you believe that most americans WasTe 30 days a year looking for lost items. Think about what you could do if you had an extra 30 days every year! Without getting up, could you lead me to where your keys are? your 2010 tax documents are? your social security card is? a flashlight is? your phone charger is? most organized people can locate pretty much every item they own & they don’t often waste time looking for lost items. often times people who organize on their ownmiss the most crucial step in getting organized. The first step & most crucial in getting organized is sorting through our possessions and deciding

20

what items we really need to keeP. statistics show we only neeD 20% of what we have so if my computing is correct - 80% of the items we have we don’t neeD! Touch everything in the area you are organizing and decide what you will keep, what needs to go in the trash and what can be donated or sold. so now you’ve sorted through your belongings and you now have only items that you neeD. This may be for one small area of your home, a few areas, a drawer or two, or the whole entire house. however much you have done, it is an accomplishment no matter how big or small! a very important aspect of being and staying organized is to have a place for everything. if you don’t, i promise you clutter will start piling up again. so i urge you to put some thought into making a home for every single type of item that you keep; this is so important! if you bring something new and different home and you don’t have a place for it, make a place for it as soon as possible. if you don’t have room, you’d better get sorting again. here are a few suggestions on how and where to store some common items found around the house. organizing takes time. order calms our minds. There is power in clearing clutter. strive to have an exact place for everything. one of my life’s pleasures is to return something to its proper place. i hope it becomes a pleasure for you as well.

A plACe for everything A professional organizer has this advise for keeping everything organized.

Kids Toys: See-through plastic bins are great for toys because kids can see what goes where. You can tape a picture of what’s inside or label the bin. Paperwork: A filing cabinet is a must when it comes to organizing paperwork. Make files for every paper you decide you NEED to keep. Here again - 80% of the paper we file - we will never access again. Examples for files might include: receipts, household expenses, birth certificates, Put files in alphabetical order & name them whatever makes sense to you so when you need it- you can put your hands on it. Shoes: An over-the-door shoe hanger is a great way to get shoes off the floor.

FULL-SERVICE LUMBERYARD Great plans, products and prices • Industry-leading plans and packages • Drafting & design services • Award-winning showrooms

Coupons & Gift Certificates: I have found plastic envelopes are very handy for storing coupons and gift certificates. I organize them in alphabetical order & I leave them in my car so they are with me all the time. Blankets: Laundry baskets make excellent holders for blankets that sometimes fit awkwardly on shelves. Magazines: Baskets are handy for keeping magazines neat. Have one location in your house for magazines- when they arrive- put them away and when you need them you will know exactly where they are.

In the bathroom: Plastic bins are great for storing a lot of items. Organize like items together - hair styling products, cosmetics, medicines, band-aids, etc. Bins not only make it easier to find items, but it also makes it easier to wipe the shelves when they become dirty. In the living room: Remote controls store easily in small baskets or in the drawer or a side table. In the craft room: See-through plastic storage bins are a very good container for this because you can see where your items are and thus find things quickly.

Travel bags, purses and totes: Plastic under the bed storage bins come in handy.

Like a Phoenix from the Ashes,

A Stunning New Building Rises in Downtown Eau Claire.

The chippewa Valley home Builders association and the Phoenix Park Bathrooms. on august 9, 2011, the public restrooms in eau claire’s beautiful Phoenix Park officially opened following a public ceremony complete with speeches, accolades, and a toilet paper cutting ceremony. after nine long months of trials and tribulations, the building of the bathrooms was complete, and eau claire residents couldn’t be happier.

Genesis of the Phoenix Park Bathroom Project

after the Phoenix Park revitalization, residents began to notice that something very important was missing. shoppers at the farmer’s market noticed it. attendees of the weekly concerts in the park noticed it. Brides renting the pavilion reaLLY noticed it. What was it?

26

Phoenix Park did not have enough restrooms!

The city of eau claire acknowledged that there was a community need that portajohns alone could not satisfy. it took action and designed plans for a more centralized set of restrooms. and then the project went out for bid. unfortunately the price tag was too high. Plans were scaled back and were sent out again. The price tag was still too high. for a third time, plans were adjusted. The future of the restrooms looked bleak.

An Unlikely Hero: Home Builders

knowing that the community was in dire need of a permanent public restroom in Phoenix Park, the chippewa Valley home Builders association (CVHBA) President, cody filipczak and executive Director, karen rockwell proposed a collaborative project with the city. The cVhBa offered to donate labor and negotiate material costs to make the project happen.

“The biggest challenge on the project was not having that central coordinator on-site throughout each phase,” said rockwell. “i give our volunteers tremendous credit for having patience during this experience. We were successful because of great professionalism, good communication skills, and an ability to laugh.” from plumbing to electrical, block work to roofing – volunteers labored throughout the winter and spring. after hundreds of hours, the work was completed on June 30, 2011.

The Toilet Paper Cutting Ceremony

on august 9, 2011, the eau claire city council and key staffers joined the cVhBa and other key project contributors to celebrate the completion of the restrooms. When everything was said and done, the taxpayers of eau claire had received a $230,000 restroom for under $90,000. not only was the project a shining example of public-private partnership, but it was also city staff and elected officials met with the a testimonial that communities can pull association – and a collaborative public- together to make big things happen. private partnership was formed. under the direction of a five-person task “nothing could make the cVhBa force, the cVhBa broke ground on the volunteers and members happier than project in november 2010. Throughout seeing this project come to fruition,” said the next nine-months over 45 member filipczak. “Working with the city has been companies (one fifth of the CVHBA’s a truly wonderful experience. We look membership) and almost 100 volunteers forward to more community partnerships contributed time, expertise and materials going forward.” for the restrooms. coordinating that many volunteers for a commercial project was no article contributed by adam rockwell small task.
