Let the Tour Begin! The Chippewa Valley Parade of Homes is my favorite event of the year. I am continually amazed by the craftsmanship and passion that each builder puts into their homes. That coupled with the inspirations of homeowners, subcontractors, and vendors makes each Parade entry an artisanal creation. For nine days a year, we are given a glimpse into many different and wonderful spaces. As the Executive Director for the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association, I get the opportunity to visit each home prior to the start of the Parade. Often, the finishing touches are still being attended to – a last coat of paint, hanging window boxes, installing appliances. It is exciting to be the witness to the culmination of their long hours.

Often, I have the opportunity to visit first-hand with excited new homeowners, glowingly showing me through their new spaces. They always have such a big smile on their faces (often mixed with relief and a little exhaustion). Their positivity energizes me. The pride that these families have in homeownership is beautiful. These individuals have worked so hard alongside the builders that their homes have become part of their family. And then the event begins, and I get to see the community as they interact with the builders and their homes. This has been a classic Chippewa Valley event for 36 great years. What a great way to spend a couple of days! All of the houses are beautiful and unique, and the style of each individual builder shines through in their creations. I find that it is often the small details that really get the most attention. Perhaps it’s a special, single little tile with a dragonfly in a sea of white, or an unexpected stained glass window in a breezeway, or even a simple, perfect stenciled inscription of a homeowner’s favorite quote. The quote I think most aptly describes the essence of the Chippewa Valley Parade of Homes (and homeownership in general) comes from poet Robert Montgomery: “Home, the spot of earth supremely blest. A dearer, sweeter spot than all the rest.” Enjoy the Parade!

As I pull up to Mrs. Jones’ house, a 75 lb. golden retriever leaps off the porch, barking my arrival. Following me into the house, my new furry friend immediately breaks into a game of tag with three attention starved children. As they scurry through the house, a giggling 18 month old girl trails behind, her sippy cup dribbling sticky juice onto the floor. Slipping in the back door, Mr. Jones tracks wet, sloppy boots through the kitchen, delivering his fresh caught fish to the sink. Mrs. Jones just raises her eyes and sighs, “typical day.” My job, as a decorator, is to find a flooring Mr. and Mrs. Jones will LOVE, and that will hold up to their lifestyle, at a price they can afford…a challenge indeed! Mr. Jones wants “real wood.” Mrs. Jones thinks laminate flooring may be the best option (because her friend just put it in). I suggest there may be a better option – but first we need to examine the pros and cons of all our choices. 6

When shopping for LVTs, look for features that will add to the beauty and durability of the floor such as beveled edges and urethane finish. Shop at a reputable store for the best advice and installation. Congoleum has recently introduced a LVT that is floating, called Connections. This flooring has the advantages of laminate floors without any of the disadvantages.


… now, back to the Jones… dogs, kids, working couples and messy men – I mean hard working, supplying food for the table men… my first choice for flooring would be luxury vinyl tile. It would be easy to maintain. They would not have to be so careful in their everyday activities. There are a variety of price points to get into their budget. And it looks great! As I gather up my samples and walk to the front door, I hear a crash. I turn to see that my furry friend has knocked over a vase of flowers, releasing a waterfall onto the floor. The 18 month old is standing on top of the cupboard throwing macaroni & cheese onto the slowly growing puddle. Mr. Jones turns around from his fish cleaning duties at the sink, slips on the chunky slime. His flailing arms lose their grip on the partially filleted fish. I smile at Mrs. Jones as our eyes meet. I shut the door as the fish lands on her head, confident we made the right choice. When it comes to building a house or redesigning a room lighting is often overlooked or not given the proper attention. Lighting can highly impact the interior environment of your home. The function of a room depends on the right type and amount of light. Improper lighting can negatively affect the feeling of the room. Too much light and the room feels harsh and uninviting. Too little light and the room is impractical. Applied correctly, lighting enhances everything in a room from the artwork to the flooring and furnishings. It will add contrast and dimension to a space as well as give you a sense of security and comfort in your home.

I am sure by now everyone has heard of layering light. However, it can be confusing how to actually accomplish the right affect to suit a room’s function. Different rooms require different layers of light. To correctly select the proper layers of light that will complement your lifestyle and meet your family’s needs you need to identify the activities that occur in each room. Will you be reading, preparing food, doing homework, watching television, working on the computer or other activities? Identify the mood or ambience you want to create as well as any decorative elements you want to highlight. This may include artwork or architectural elements. With gas prices still on the rise, we may all be spending a little more time in our own back yards this year, so we might as well make our outdoor living space a great place to be! Are you tired of looking at your air conditioning unit as you sit on your patio? Maybe you’d like a great divider between yourself and the neighbor, but are looking for something more than just a boring fence panel. We’re all trying to be more environmentally friendly and that is especially important in the yard and garden. To conserve water, you can use a rain barrel to collect rainwater to water your plants or use a drip irrigation system for your gardens and potted plants. To reduce your carbon footprint, consider composting your garden waste and kitchen scraps like vegetable and fruit peels, egg shells and coffee grounds. The compost you’ll create is a perfect organic garden fertilizer and you’re contributing less to the landfill! Compost bins don’t have to be unsightly; many of the new ones actually look nice in the garden! Ask the folks at your local garden center what types they have available. New plants are everywhere this year. They are sure to add something colorful and fun to your yard or garden! For shrubs, check out the beautiful Vanilla Strawberry and Bella Anna hydrangeas from Bailey Nurseries! These plants even sound beautiful! Vanilla Strawberry blushes from white to a rich rosy pink and blooms best in the sun, while Bella Anna’s delicate pink blooms do quite well in partial shade. 21

There are always new perennials to try in the garden and this year is no exception. If you think hostas are pretty ordinary, check out the new Empress Wu hosta. It can grow to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide! It sure makes a statement in the shade garden. In a sunny garden, you may want to try one of the bright new Echinaceas, Hot Papaya, Tomato Soup or Mac and Cheese. With their bright orange and red flowers, these beauties are sure to stand out in any garden!

New annuals are abundant and eye-catching! Pretty Much Picasso Supertunia was released by Proven Winners last year and has lived up to its hype. This unusual purple petunia with a bright green edge flowers prolifically and will withstand temperatures as low as 30 degrees! A great characteristic considering our unpredictable Wisconsin spring and fall weather! Another new grouping of petunias are the black (yes, black) petunias from Ball Horticulture. They are Black Velvet, Phantom and Pinstripe. Their striking flowers are sure to draw a lot of notice in your planters. Goldilocks Rocks Bidens has brilliant yellow flowers on a lacey foliaged trailing plant. Great in the sun, it makes a striking combo with any of the black petunias.

Looking for year round art? Consider adding some metal art or statuary to your landscape. Great metal art is available at garden centers and from local craftsmen and these pieces will tolerate any weather Wisconsin can dish out! Not just cutesy, but actually artsy, metal sculpture looks beautiful in any season and makes a great accent to the yard or garden, sure to give your garden a touch of class! Fire pots (not fire pits) are the new answer for yards where there isn’t room for a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, yet that touch of warmth and ambience is still desired. They come in many sizes, from quite small to moderately large, and in a wide range of styles and prices. There is surely one to suit any outdoor space. Some are fueled by lamp oil and others use a gel fuel that is completely smokeless and even comes in a citronella version to repel insects! They are cleaner burning and less of a fire hazard than candles, and I find them to be just perfect for a patio dining table. So, Escape into your own yard and garden this summer to plant something, build something, reduce your carbon footprint, or just make a more pleasing environment for yourself and your family!

Making your Router Dance a Jig for Fine Patio Furniture. Most of the patio furniture available today is not very enticing. Injection molded plastic and tube steel seem to dominate the material choices. These pieces do fairly well. They are inexpensive and reasonably durable, but they are hardly “furniture.” For the woodworkers among us, this is barely tolerable. So, grab yourself a stack of cedar and head to the shop to make some patio furniture with the emphasis on “furniture.” This piece is designed as a “grilling station.” Grills never have enough countertop space for all the dishes and utensils we use, and that certainly leaves out enough space for our favorite beverages. Also, there is the problem of where to store your bag of charcoal and other pyrotechnic aids. The grilling station solves these problems and incorporates a louvered design to keep everything dry and well ventilated. The design for this piece can be downloaded at Chippewa Valley Home Building Association website (www.cvhomebuilders.com). The challenge in this design is to make numerous repetitive mortises that are cut cleanly and accurately. The traditional solution for creating mortises has been a dedicated mortising machine or a mortising attachment on the drill press. These work reasonably well for a blind mortise, such as you would typically use in constructing a table or chair, but they are far too imprecise for mortises that need to be placed accurately or those that need to be cut cleanly. To accomplish this, a better solution is to turn to a router with a plunge base and a spiral carbide cutter. First known to machinists as “end mills,” spiral carbides have been adopted by woodworkers and now come in a bewildering array of sizes and edge styles. They cut very cleanly, but their limitation is that they cause rotational torque which can cause your router to shoot off course and ruin your work piece. To gain control over this, or any other tool, we need to use a jig. One of the simplest forms of a router jig is a fence. The fence allows you to slide the router along a workpiece creating a mortise. The problem is that a fence only holds the router on one side and you must concentrate on keeping the fence in contact with the workpiece as you move the router. This can prove difficult, and to solve the problem, I like to build a router sled. This simple sled [PIC1] is designed to make mortises that are perpendicular to the edge of the workpiece. Two guide fences are set into dados that are set to exactly

the width of the router base. This prevents the router from moving side-to-side, and the stop blocks control the length of your mortise. Another, more elaborate sled [PIC 2], was developed to cut mortises parallel to the edge of the workpiece. The addition of the clamping base allows me to clamp the workpiece firmly and also clamp a stop block for repetitive mortises. The design for this jig can also be downloaded at www. cvhomebuilders.com.The track and clamping hardware can be purchased at www.rockler.com for a reasonable price, and the rest of the materials can usually be found in the scrap pile. In practice, this jig has proven stable and easily controllable. For the price of the hardware and about a day of careful milling, this sled has replaced the cost of a dedicated mortising machine. For the purposes of building our louvered grilling station, this jig will allow us to make both the stile mortises and the louver mortises. To make the stile mortises, begin by laying out the mortise locations on one leg. Since the jig is repeatable, you will only need to do the layout on one leg. Once this is done, slide the leg into the jig. Push the bottom support up and clamp

in place; then lock the leg in place with the clamps [PIC3]. Then move the top sled in or out to bring the end-mill in line with the mortise location, and then move the end mill to the end of the mortise and set the stop blocks [PIC3.5]. Then, since we will need to make the same mortise on each leg, set a stop block with the remaining clamp to mark the location of the leg in the jig. Set the depth of cut on your plunge base and route the mortise. You will be left with a mortise with radiused ends, so grab a sharp chisel and chop them square[PIC4] [PIC4.5]. You could opt to simply round the ends to match the end mill, but I prefer to square-chop the stile mortises since they are under high stress.

The louvers are a different story. They are under little stress, but they need to be able to shed water. So, use a radius bit and round over the ends of the louvers [PIC5]. Not only will they perform better against water, but it will save you a tremendous amount of chisel work. To route the louver mortises, the process is the same as the stile mortises, but you need to twist the sled on the jig. Get yourself a traditional angle gauge and set the sled 15 degrees to parallel [PIC6]. Then sink a couple of screws to hold it in place. Begin by laying out louver locations so you can slide the leg down for each mortise. In this design, the louvers are 3” on center for the sides, and 1-7/16” for the doors. Once the stile mortises are cut on the frame and doors, and the louvers are mortised on the same, you will need to cut the tenons, dry fit the assembly, and do the glue-ups. I would recommend pre-finishing the parts prior to assembly. Given the number of louvers, pre-finishing will save you a lot of time. For a finish, to be on the safe side, use a good exterior stain such as Cabott’s or Sikkens. Lately, I have been experimenting with two-part polyurethanes with considerable success. On this piece, I am testing a newer finish from Rubio called “Monocoat Decking Oil. Get the finish on, get it glued up, hang the doors and get it out on the deck. Your charcoal and fire starters will be living in style, and you will never have to look for your charcoal or a place to set the dishes, or your favorite beverage.
