Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School

is a Catholic educational community

committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as lifelong goals.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2016 marked a banner year for Mother McAuley as we ushered in 60 years at our current campus. Our tradition of educating young women in the Mercy tradition first, as Saint Xavier Academy, and now as

Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School has flourished because of the leadership of so many. From Mother Francis Warde and Sr. Agatha O’Brien’s original vision for a school to educate young girls, to Sr. Mary Camillus Byrne, who integrated the Academy with Saint Xavier College, to visionaries like Sr. Josetta Butler and Sr. Huberta McCarthy who gave the school new life through the planning and development of Mother McAuley in 1956 at its current site, and Sr. Brian Costello, the founder of our liberal arts curriculum. Sixty years later we survive and thrive! We are working to prepare our facilities and program for the next generation of McAuley women. Through our first capital campaign in 25 years, “Future Ready: The Campaign for Mother McAuley,” this past spring we began transforming our facilities into the collaborative learning environment that often is found at colleges and in workplaces. Upgraded facilities, technology and workspaces will elevate our students’ experience and prepare them for their educational and professional futures. Our learners of today will graduate as the leaders of tomorrow. As you read through these pages, you will no doubt be impressed by the tremendous generosity of our alumnae, parents, and friends – today’s visionaries – who have brought us to this point in our legacy. This last fiscal year, we engaged several new foundations in our cause to support student needs and building improvements. Alumnae engagement increased as evidenced by attendance at our Banner-Year Reunion, McAuley Hall, golf outing and other events – collectively translating into greater giving. Support for events like our annual golf outing netted proceeds which allowed us to award 19 Tradition of Excellence Scholarships to daughters and granddaughters of alumnae. Mother McAuley can only provide these opportunities because of you, who have generously responded to our call. You share in our vision to foster confident, ambitious, and highly-skilled women to respond to the challenges confronting our world. We need broadly-educated women asking the right questions and seeking innovative solutions to problems. Young women at McAuley rely on your support so they may become everything they want to be and everything we need them to be. Our tradition calls for planning, creativity and courage to meet these needs for the future. I have every confidence that you will continue to expand your support. In Mercy,

Mary Acker Klingenberger ‘75 President

ADVANCEMENT OFFICE Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Mother McAuley, On these pages we share a snapshot of the impact of your giving to Mother McAuley. Your generosity provides tuition assistance for families, bolsters critical programs including athletics, field trips, career development and counseling, maintains our ability to offer competitive salaries and preserves and sustains our Mercy values while offering our students the highest quality education that includes state of the art technology and educational tools. From parents and alumnae to foundations and corporations, those who support Mother McAuley come from a myriad of backgrounds. What they share is a belief that our young women deserve our best, so they can become their best. A McAuley girl is bright, creative, compassionate, and motivated. When she graduates, she is a self-possessed, entrepreneurial young woman with an unbridled desire to achieve greatness. Once she leaves 99th Street, she goes to medical school, starts her own business, becomes a wife and mother, designs interior spaces, defends clients in a courtroom, does scientific research, develops projects in the entertainment industry, works for fashion designers abroad. The possibilities are endless because of you and your support. What impact and power your gifts have! Your generosity supports our highest priority – the young women of Mother McAuley. Thank you for lighting their way, their path and the future of Mother McAuley.

Gratefully, Attending Mother McAuley has been something that I have looked forward to ever since I could remember. I believe that during my four years at McAuley I will be able to act

as a role model to my fellow classmates and community. I strongly believe that McAuley will instill in me the qualities and characteristics to become the type of person who works to the highest potential in life. KALEIGH LEAHY ‘20

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS ON 99th STREET! Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School commemorated its 60th Anniversary on September 1 with a special liturgy celebrated by Cardinal

Blase J. Cupich. Students, faculty, staff, alumnae, Sisters of Mercy and honored guests gathered in the school gymnasium to share in the observance of the school’s history and heritage. Deacon Robert Cislo, theology faculty member, assisted with the liturgy. During the Mass the Archbishop blessed items which were placed in a special time capsule. The capsule was later buried on campus as the celebration of 60 years on 99th Street continued. Following the Mass, a special reception was held in the student lounge. We were pleased to have Cardinal Cupich join as well as many Sisters of Mercy, alumnae, past principals, donors and other special guests. The Sisters of Mercy were pioneers in reshaping the educational landscape for young women in Chicago. Their vision and work brought us to this point – from Catherine McAuley’s labors on Baggot Street in Dublin, Ireland, to our early home in Chicago as Saint Xavier Academy on 49th Street, to our current campus on 99th Street. McAuley’s predecessor, Saint Xavier Academy, educated young women in grades K-12 and was located at 49th and Cottage Grove. Seeing the demand for educational options in the expanding Chicago Southland, in 1955 the Sisters of Mercy drew plans for the construction of a new school on 155 of acres of prairie land located at the southwest corner of the city proper. Cardinal Stritch of Chicago later suggested the school change its name to Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, in honor of the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy.

Throughout its 60 years, Mother McAuley has witnessed the advancement of its academic, arts and athletic programs; the expansion of the building and beautification of the grounds, and the growth of the student body, faculty, staff. Our more than 26,500 alumnae excel as leaders in industries like medicine, law, politics, engineering, education, technology, the arts, science, architecture, the culinary arts, aeronautics, aviation and more.

FUTURE READY Before us lie our hopes and dreams reflected in the brilliant faces of the young women of Mother McAuley. To them and to all who will follow them, we commit ourselves to being the very best so that they might be their very best. For us to call them to excellence in all things, we must call ourselves to excellence. “Future Ready, The Campaign for Mother McAuley,” is the school’s largest, most ambitious, and most important fundraising effort since the school opened on 99th Street in 1956. It makes possible campus enhancements to promote collaborative learning that is the norm at colleges and universities, and within the workplace. Since January 1, 2017 thanks to the help of a number of generous individual donors and family foundations, the Future Ready Campaign has raised $1.9 million of its $2.6 million goal for Phase One. “With this extraordinary level of commitment, we tackled the initial phase of our major renovation project to reconfigure 10,500 square feet of space and access to our school. We’ll be ready to welcome back our current students in August and junior high girls when we begin our shadow days in early September,” stated Klingenberger at the start of construction which began on June 5. This phase transformed the current Student Lounge into a Student Commons – a place for students to gather to collaborate on assignments, build community, relax, enjoy a refreshment at the Mac Café or shop for branded apparel and merchandise at a retail kiosk. Chicago-based Wight and Company was the lead architect on the project with the Lombard Company as the lead contractor.

8 | ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017

Phase One also included upgrades to the school’s main Circle Drive entrance off 99th Street to provide 21st-century safety and security that is invisible, yet essential, for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The space also allotted for new offices. All improvements were scheduled for completion by the time school resumed in late August. The remaining phases for “Future Ready” campaign, to be completed over the next several years, prioritize renovating and enhancing classrooms; radically changing the library/media center; and adding more wellness and athletic facilities and resources which will benefit all students, faculty and staff. Active planning for the campaign has been going on for over a year, engaging many constituents, including students, parents, alumnae, faculty and staff. Earlier this year, McAuley held two

Through minds sharpened by rigorous academics, talents honed through personal pursuits in the arts and athletics, and hearts enriched by the Mercy tradition and enduring personal relationships, Mother McAuley prepares these young women to join the community of caring McAuley alumnae in making a world of difference.

community engagement sessions to solicit feedback on the facility upgrades. Feedback from all of the sessions helped prioritize the various needs around the school. No funding for Future Ready has been derived from tuition; the proceeds come exclusively from many very generous donors. These same donors recognize the skills that graduates must carry onto college and apply in the workplace and see the outcomes of Future Ready as a means to ensure our students are prepared academically, socially and spiritually to be successful. A non-facility component of the campaign includes bolstering scholarships and tuition assistance for families. McAuley’s last capital campaign – “Expanding for Excellence” – was conducted in 1993 with proceeds funding the construction of the main gym and music wing. Although additional updates have been made to the campus since that time, all have been funded through the general operating budget. These include the 2001 renovations to the art and science wings, the 2008 dining hall update and the 2012 construction of two new, state-of-the-art, LEED-certified chemistry labs.

Anchored in our rich Catholic tradition, we choose a future that is as bold and pioneering as Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. Future Ready, The Campaign for Mother McAuley will support our commitment to be a premier school of choice for girls who will grow into confident, creative, and collaborative women in college and the workplace, in their families and communities.

More information on Future Ready, including renderings of the proposed campus enhancements, can be viewed on the school website: mothermcauley.org/futureready To learn more, or to donate, contact Carey Temple Harrington ‘86, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at 773-881-6557 or charrington@mothermcauley.org.

Because of your generosity...

WE CULTIVATE ACADEMIC DISTINCTION AMONG OUR STUDENTS. Rigorous by design, our liberal arts curriculum puts a strong emphasis on the development of values-driven leaders prepared to continue their education in college and beyond. Many of the colleges and universities that our students applied to were selective and consistently sought out our young women, including The University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, The University of Michigan, The University of Illinois, and Loyola University, to name a few. Academic courses challenged each student to grow intellectually and to achieve excellence in a broad range of disciplines.

The Helen Brach Foundation - $25,000

Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Mercy Ministry Fund $32,000

This was awarded to Mariclare Malinger Martin ‘95, teacher of Introduction to Child Psychology and moderator of the Little School program. Students in Mrs. Martin’s class participated in a field trip to the Blair Early Childhood Center in Chicago where they were introduced to positions in occupational and physical therapy, speech pathology, special education teaching, social work, and leadership in special education. The students observed children who are challenged with learning issues, speech and hearing impairments, autism spectrum disorders, etc. Our students were familiarized with a variety of teaching styles, differentiated instruction, and appropriate ways of communicating with parents and children.

$50,000 awarded

This award provided emergency financial aid to students throughout the second semester of the school year. This is to address the need when the amount budgeted by the school is exhausted. (That amount is 9% of the collected tuition.) Approximately 25 to 30 families benefited from the emergency financial aid fund. The Helen Brach Foundation has provided tuition assistance for four consecutive years. The Keeley Family Foundation - $25,000 This donation was to establish a scholarship in memory of John L. Keeley Jr. who passed away in June 2015. Mr. Keeley was a loyal benefactor to McAuley. Over the past years the Keeley Family has been a consistent support to us, providing financial aid and scholarship assistance for our students. It is through donations such as theirs that we are able to maintain an affordable tuition rate for our students and families.

$42,000 awarded

Helen M. Harrison Foundation - $10,000 The ACT Prep is a pilot project entitled, “Improving College and Career Readiness and Success for Every Student.” The project was expressly designed to provide direct specialized instruction to underperforming and underprivileged students of McAuley’s 2018 graduating class as they prepared for college admission and the ACT test in April 2017. The program benefitted students who were identified as performing in the lower quartile of their class. The focus was to assist these students to develop the basic level of knowledge needed for higher level thinking skills. The project was managed by a certified teacher with experience in differentiated instruction.

New Mass Communication System Installed Designed to replace three outdated and separate systems (clocks, bells and public address), in June the former school announcement system was replaced with an integrated Mass Notification System. We are very excited about the capabilities this new system provides, in particular new features to aid in the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff. The update of our system is part of a three-phase objective. • Central command workstation • 60 classroom stations with call buttons • 10 corridor double sided stations • Synchronized clock system with class dismissal signaling • Audio & visual message boards • LED configurable sequence flashers • Remote access into the system to make announcements with talk-back capability and messaging • Security lock down access to control doors and/or fire doors • Smartphone access into the system This three-phase project first began two years ago, with the updating of the school’s security and surveillance system. The installation of a Mass Notification System during the summer of 2017 marked the completion of the second phase. The remaining phase includes the upgrading of all internal and external doors to allow for remote, keyless entry. The total cost of the initiative is $158,000, with nearly two-thirds of that fee having been acquired through grants and donations totaling $81,500. We are most grateful to these foundations for their generous support of this important project.

James R. Ragen Memorial Fund – $6,500 Gifted by the Ragen sisters, Mary Ragen O’Rourke ‘65, Dr. Therese Ragen ‘67, Anne Ragen McNulty ‘69 and Katie Ragen Nolan. The Ragen sisters have consistently and generously granted funds to update our security system. Fred J. Brunner Foundation – $25,000 The Brunner Foundation has remained a faithful annual supporter of McAuley needs/interests. Pamela Brunner Schwegel and the Board of Trustees has granted McAuley funds for the Chemistry Labs, Center for Innovative Technology and several updates of the security and surveillance in the building. Gladys Brooks Foundation – $50,000 James J. Daly, Chairperson awarded this grant to McAuley on behalf of the Gladys Brooks Foundation. This is the first grant that McAuley has received from the foundation, whose preferred areas of interest is libraries, education, hospitals and clinics.

DONOR BREAKFAST Excerpts from speech given by Yaitzell Noriega ‘17

On March 30 McAuley hosted its annual breakfast for scholarship recipients and their benefactors. More than 75 donors and representatives from scholarship foundations joined us for this annual event. 61% of our young women receive some sort of financial aid. These special guests play an important role helping to make the lifetime advantage of a Mother McAuley education possible for many of our students. Held in the student lounge, this special “thank you” breakfast featured student Yaitzell Noriega ‘17 who gave the guests a glimpse into her McAuley experience, while sharing her gratitude to the individuals who made her career at McAuley possible. Here is an excerpt from Yaitzell’s remarks.

Once I started at McAuley, I knew I had made the best decision of my life. I quickly immersed myself in this community in order to truly take advantage of all McAuley had to offer. Because of the generosity of donors, my parents were able to focus some of their finances on my hopes and dreams to really make the most of my time here at McAuley. Everyone in this building has had my best interest at heart and although it hasn’t always been an easy road, I have worked hard to show those who have helped me along the way that I was worth their time and efforts. I truly believe that every class I have taken here has prepared me for what is yet to come. I have been pushed out of my comfort zone and have been challenged to expand my horizons. Every teacher, every opportunity, every class has taught me to be a leader, a person who can make a difference, and an individual who can be compassionate all while being successful and I couldn’t be anymore grateful for these qualities instilled in me. Throughout these past four years friends, faculty, and staff became my family while my school became my home. I truly received the opportunity of a lifetime and I wouldn’t have been able to experience this if it weren’t for the generosity of donors like you. You make the biggest impact on struggling families and you give deserving young women the opportunity to live out their dreams. Your compassion and generosity does not go unnoticed. You’ve made the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education a reality for the many young women sitting here today and one day we’ll pay it forward like you willingly did for us.

As a McAuley student, Yaitzell was a Daniel Murphy Scholar, and the recipient of The Susan Morrissey Memorial Award for Service, The Hank and Virginia Murphy Scholarship, and The Elizabeth Geoghegan O’Leary Memorial Scholarship. Yaitzell is attending Marquette University on the Chick Evans scholarship. Her intended major is biochemistry, following the pre-med route.

Honor Roll of Donors 2016 - 2017

Throughout its history, Mother McAuley has honored its founding commitment to providing a liberal arts, college-preparatory Catholic education – seeped in the Mercy tradition – to young women, regardless of financial ability to pay full tuition. Between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, thanks to the generosity of donors, 61 percent of students received financial assistance. We are grateful to the alumnae, parents and friends who have generously established or contributed to endowed and annual scholarship funds, ensuring that all young women benefit from the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education. Every effort has been made to ensure that this report is accurate and complete. As a student I had no idea that the foundation Mother McAuley was building within me and my peers would last a lifetime. I have gone into adulthood with an emphatic belief in the power and value of education and mercy. The school made me a writer and communicator in a world where it feels increasingly difficult to authentically be those things. Grateful is an understatatement. SAMANTHA BILJAN ‘09

We are grateful for all that McAuley offers. From the administration, to the teachers, to the support staff, every member goes above and beyond to provide what is so important and necessary, inspiring and true, and good and honest. The entire staff cares about the students, empowers them, and helps them achieve their big dreams. As parents, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing that Catherine is being given the same amount of support, motivation and guidance as at home. Because of your generosity...

WE HAVE SUSTAINED OUR LEGACY. We have been tasked with an important job: to uphold and honor the tradition of educating young women as set forth by Catherine McAuley, followed by Sister Agatha O’Brien and the Sisters of Mercy who first began exclusively educating girls in Chicago more than 170 years ago. Year after year graduates choose to enroll their daughters here, recognizing the strength that lies in the lifetime advantage of a Mother McAuley education.

GIFTS Mother McAuley was the best high school experience I could ask for and I wouldn’t change any part of it. McAuley is where I made lifelong friends and it has changed my life for the better. This school builds the confidence of strong girls and gives them a comfortable environment for them to grow and be themselves. ALLISON BLOUGH ‘16
