dear friends

We are pleased to introduce you to our winter issue of Inscape Magazine. In this issue you will read about all the achievements of our students, faculty and alumnae, as well as school efforts. McAuley continues to educate women from the Chicagoland area in the Mercy tradition, honoring the legacy of Catherine McAuley. Today our school is thriving because of the generosity of supporters who believe in the mission of the Sisters of Mercy. Your support enables us to educate our young women and prepare them to become leaders of the 21st century. I invite you to visit McAuley to experience the vision of Catherine McAuley. In Mercy,

Mrs. Claudia Woodruff Principal/Acting President

embracing tradition, pioneering tomorrow In November, McAuley became the first single-gender, private high school in the Chicago Southland to launch an Apple iPad® curriculum instruction integration program. Mother McAuley is dedicated to providing our young women with the latest technology in order to best prepare them for their future education and careers. We are in an increasingly digital age, and having a resource like the iPad allows students to learn and teachers to teach in more dynamic ways. Since 2012, McAuley has been using school-owned iPads in select science classes.

Since 1846 the Sisters of Mercy and their lay colleagues have

prided themselves on a rich tradition of educating young women to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. This is our mission, yesterday and today. Whether it was St. Xavier Academy or Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, we have shown our community that we believe in the power of women.

Today, the educational landscape is ever-changing. As it does, Mother McAuley is embracing new opportunities to enrich the academic experience and prepare future generations of young women to think differently, observe with an eye sharpened by the McAuley tradition, and pioneer challenges using hands-on methodologies. Through campus improvements and curriculum and classroom enhancements, we have set the stage for our students of today to become leaders of tomorrow. This past September, we celebrated the opening of our new Chemistry Labs. They stand as proof that the seemingly impossible is possible. Even in difficult economic times, we at McAuley continue to be blessed by and grateful for the support and generosity of our alumnae, parents, and friends. The labs will shape the course of our young women’s careers. It will be here within the walls of these labs that our young women will acquire the skills to be leaders in the fields of science, engineering, healthcare, research, and technology. Here their vision for helping and changing our world will be nurtured. The moral and ethical principles they will learn here will be as vital as their talents for science or engineering or healthcare.

Recently, 10 McAuley faculty members began collaborating with Saint Xavier University faculty to become iPad instructional specialists. Together, the schools are exploring uses and implementation of iPads in the classroom. The partnership is funded with a Title III grant and offered through the University’s Center for Instructional Design and Academic Technologies (CIDAT). With the start of the 2013 school year, McAuley will pilot the use of the iPads. Select eBooks will be available for use and students will have the option to bring an iPad to school. Complete integration of iPads into the classroom through a 1:1 program will be based on the success of the pilot. The variety of educational apps will allow teachers to create lesson plans and individualize and differentiate instruction in a way that is familiar to students, while still working on essential 21st century skill sets needed to meet state and national standards. Leadership in any field requires imagination, a certain optimism, determination and creativity. The girls who enter our doors as freshmen leave as women who exemplify these characteristics. They inspire confidence in themselves and others−the type of confidence that turns other high school’s graduates into followers. As we honor the tradition of educating women to pioneer the future, we do so mindful of the challenges that await them. We must provide them with the tools and skills to journey into the world as leaders and as powerful young women. The torch has been passed and our legacy stands waiting for the students to go forth and do amazing things. Our young women have a very clear roadmap to follow. Our more than 23,000 alumnae have led the way to lead and they have not forgotten what they learned at McAuley. Dr. Roz Iasillo, chair of the Natural & Health Sciences Department, contributed to this article.

New Chemistry Labs Revealed Girls + Science = Great Chemistry! It was a chilly April morning when we broke ground on our new Chemistry Labs, and a warm August day when we celebrated their completion with a special visit from The Most Reverend Andrew P. Wypych, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago. The Bishop celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit to commemorate the opening of the new school year, followed by a special blessing of the labs. The labs are unique to the Chicagoland area since they are designed and equipped to exclusively teach high school girls. The two-story building features two chemistry labs with high-tech classrooms and prep rooms. The new high-tech classrooms allow students to have hands-on opportunities to explore content in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The new building is a registered Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver project with many sustainable and energy efficient features. LEED is the nation’s pre-eminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance, environmentally friendly “green” buildings. You can be a part of this exciting project. You can change lives by becoming involved. There are many opportunities to help. This project is a $2 million project that you can support by: • Making a one-time gift of cash or securities to help fund the project • Giving a meaningful gift budgeted over a period of three to five years to fund the project • Encouraging others to make a gift to help fund the project To make a donation or for more information, please contact the Institutional Advancement Office at 773881-6557 or visit mothermcauley.org. photos by Rebecca Healy

summer happenings

summer happenings Europe Trip Twelve members of the World Language Department and the Fine Arts Department faculty and 72 McAuley students spent eight days in June exploring London, Paris and Madrid on an EF Educational Tour. This inaugural trip was offered to rising seniors planning on a fourth year of French or Spanish and/or who have been enrolled in three years of Art, in addition to recent graduates who have met the same criteria.

Underground Railroad Bike Tour Last June, faculty members Art Sheridan (Theology), Rebecca Houston (Social Science) and Patrick Sullivan (English) trekked a 600 mile route to expand their consciousness through discussions and local explorations of the historic Underground Railroad. They traveled on bikes, enduring sometimes rough terrain from Kentucky through Ohio. Funded through a Professional Development Grant offered through McAuley, their experience helped them develop a toolbox of strategies to bridge the gap between our diverse student body through dynamic and exciting practices.

Awakening the Dreamer Teresa LeCompte of the Theology Department received a Professional Development Grant for Facilitator Training for Awakening the Dreamer/Changing the Dream. This summer, she was trained to give Symposiums - a transformative educational experience, the goal which is to awaken and inspire people to create an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on the planet as the guiding principle of our time. This program is sponsored by the Pachamama (Earth Mother) Alliance which began in the 90’s as a relationship between a group of North Americans and the Achuar, an indigenous people who live in the Amazon region of Ecuador. Their goal is to empower the indigenous people of the Amazon to preserve their lands, culture and educate and inspire individuals to bring forth a thriving, just and sustainable world.

This trip is unique because it is interdisciplinary in nature, allowing the students to integrate their academic experience at McAuley by exploring many of Europe’s most famous cities. They visited landmarks such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, Les Invalides, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Palacio Real, the Prado Museum, the Plaza Mayor, and the Puerta del Sol.

Class of 1962 – 50th Reunion The Class of 1962 gathered together at their alma mater to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their graduation. This class was the third McAuley class to complete their entire high school education at the 99th Street Campus. The alumnae spent an evening at the school where they enjoyed a tour of the campus to see the many spaces that did not exist when they attended the school. It was a true blessing to welcome these beautiful women back to McAuley.

Michigan City Gathering at McGinnis Pub

Class of 1962 - 50th Reunion

For the second time in as many years, McAuley alumna, Terry Dugan McGinnis ’68, proprietor of McGinnis Pub, and the McAuley Alumnae Office co-hosted a “McGinnis Gathering” of McAuley alumnae and friends in Michigan City, Indiana. This simple event is a wonderful time to bring the many alumnae and friends of McAuley who either reside full-time or have vacation homes in the Michigan City or Harbor Country areas together for a fun night. Our hostess supplied all the appetizers, and guests were able to enjoy the food and beverages of the restaurant. The idea of this gathering came from a brainstorming session with Kathy Flynn Dujcek ’68, Colleen Kelly ’05, JoAnn Foertch Altenbach ‘76 and Tom Geraghty, Director of Institutional Advancement. “We wanted to create an event that would bring McAuley to a place or destination where McAuley alumnae and friends have relocated.” Please look for more information on the McGinnis Gathering on July 27, 2013.

alumnae news News from the Institutional Advancement Office The first half of the school year has been a very productive time period for McAuley’s Institutional Advancement Office. In addition to the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1962 (read more on page 9), a smaller group of ’62 alums met to plan the installation of a new memorial garden, Maureen Breen Putman ’65 Memorial Garden. Several of Maureen’s classmates and her sister Nancy Breen Johnson ’62 were instrumental in creating and designing both a new memorial garden and a scholarship fund to serve as a tribute to the memory of Maureen. The garden was a gift of a generous benefactor. Maureen lived a full life in very short amount of time. She wrote, “Laughter really is the best medicine. Practicing happiness is the only way to live in harmony with your body and support its healing energies.” Maureen took full advantage of her McAuley education and made vast contributions to life while she touched the lives of so many individuals. The installation ceremony and reception were held on Friday, November 2, 2012 and was attended by 60 friends and family members of Maureen. Donations to the scholarship fund may be made on the McAuley Alumnae page: www.mcauleyalums. org.

Maureen Breen Putman ‘65 Memorial Garden

In conjunction with a strong theatre season this past year, we are pleased to announce that two new scholarships have been created that will benefit students in the Fine Arts Department, specifically those student who are enrolled in the Theatre and Music Programs. These programs were intimately involved in the creation of these scholarships. The first scholarship opportunity was the awarding of the inaugural Don Haynes Theatre Scholarship that gave a $1000 award to a senior Theatre student. This scholarship fund was created by friends and donors in the memory of our beloved Don Haynes, husband of our Theatre Director, Pay Haynes, who passed away suddenly in the fall of 2011. The second opportunity was the creation of a new music scholarship in honor of Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, RSM. In a combination of efforts, the Theatre and Music Programs of the Fine Arts Department, along with alumnae from McAuley’s Music Program and the Office of Institutional Advancement, organized and hosted a tribute to Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, RSM. “Music and Memories —A Tribute to Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, RSM” brought back over 60 McAuley choir alumnae from the 1970’s to 2003 to sing together. The event was attended by more than 350 alumnae and friends and raised over $10,000 to endow the Sister Ellen Marie Music Scholarship fund. The first scholarship will be given in 2013 to an incoming freshman student. An exciting new event is in the planning stages. The first ever All Class Reunion and McAuley Hall Induction will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2013. A planning committee, consisting of McAuley alumnae and McAuley Advancement staff, has been meeting for nearly a year to create the first ever All Class Reunion as well as induct McAuley alumnae into the new McAuley Hall. The goal of this new reunion format is to bring all the Saint Xavier Academy and McAuley High School alumnae back to the school to celebrate McAuley with a special emphasis on the classes celebrating significant milestones such as the 40th, 30th, 25th reunion and so on. The All Class Reunion format will replace the individual class reunion which has previously been the tradition. Additionally, the first ever McAuley Hall Inductions will take place at this event. More information can be found on pages 8 and 18 of this issue, or at www.mothermcauleyalums.org. Please save the date for Celebration 2013, when we will honor Frances Robinson ’74 with the Catherine McAuley Award, Jennifer Costello Fortner ’94 with the Distinguished Alumna Award and Sister Sheila Lyne, RSM with the Sister Agatha O’Brien Catholic Service Award. Celebration 2013 will be held here at McAuley on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 6PM. For complete information and to purchase your tickets please visit www.mcauleyalumns.org and look for the Celebration 2013 link.

Fiddler on the Roof Mother McAuley presented its annual fall musical, Fiddler on the Roof, on November 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2012. Based on the short story “Tevye and His Daughters” by Sholom Aleichem, the narrative follows a Jewish family in a small town in Russia at the outset of World War I. Tevye struggles to keep their religious traditions and practices alive in his own home even as they begin to fall part all around him. The heartfelt and touching story continues to resonant with audiences today. Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964 and was the first musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It has since experienced four successful Broadway revivals and won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Composer and Lyricist (Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, respectfully), Best Actor, Best Direction, and Best Revival. The cast of Fiddler on the Roof is led by students from Mother McAuley and the neighboring boys’ high schools. The production staff for the show includes Director, Patricia Haynes; Vocal Directors, Carrie Alifantis and Julie McKee; Choreographer, Michael Gutrich; Conductor, Hannah Lawson; Scenic Designer, Donna Thomas and Technical Director, Kyle Dunleavy.

New Food Service McAuley welcomed Quest as its new food service provider this school year. Quest is now offering breakfast and lunch for our students and faculty/staff, in addition to catering services for onsite events.

Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars The Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars (CMHS) program was instituted to recognize superior academic achievement, offer opportunities for academic enrichment and encourage further development of skills and talents. Now into its second year, the program continues its endeavors based on Catherine McAuley’s belief that “No work of society can be more productive than the careful instruction of women.” Last October, the CMHS program alums Anne Bigane Wilson ‘76, engineer and President of Bigane Paving Co; Colleen Caroll ‘97, Director of People and Process at Palantir.net; Becca Pelka ‘07, biology major at Loyola University; and Claudette Alumnae CMHS return to McAuley Soto ‘97, engineer and Project Manager at d’Escoto, Inc. returned to McAuley in October to share information about their careers with the Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars. They told stories about their own days at McAuley and how those experiences prepared them for the careers on which they have embarked. Encouraging questions and initiating future involvement, they even invited some students to tour a job site in the spring. This was the first of four CMHS meetings this year during which McAuley alums in various fields will share career information with the students. The presentation was coordinated by Mrs. Jan McAuliffe, program director. Northwestern University’s Evanston campus was the destination for approximately 30 juniors from Mother McAuley High School in midNovember. A smaller group of seniors toured the campus in October. The trip, co-sponsored by the Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars and the Counseling Department, enabled the students to take part in an information session, a tour of the campus and lunch in the student center. During the information session, the students learned about the various schools within the university, information about activities, admission statistics, financial aid and more. The tour included all parts of the lake-side campus. Students were accompanied by College Counselor, Kathy Farrell and CMHS Program Director, Jan McAuliffe.

Clubs and Organizations The National Honor Society hosted their annual Fall Festival on Thursday, October 28. For a fee of $5.00, students could dress out of uniform and embrace the theme of “The 80s.” All proceeds benefited the Misericordia Heart of Mercy, a home for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities. Students also enjoyed a performance by “The Heartbreakers,” the Misericordia dance troupe. Fall Festival benefits Miseticordia

Mercy Day McAuley honored its foundress, Catherine McAuley, and the Sisters of Mercy during its annual Mercy Day celebration. Each year on September 24, 11,000 Sisters of Mercy, friends, colleagues, educators and students at Mercy Schools around the world celebrate Mercy Day. This is the day on which Catherine McAuley first opened the House of Mercy in Baggot Street, Dublin, Ireland and dedicated it to Our Lady of Mercy. Mother McAuley High School’s celebration is full of spirit and tradition that includes a remembrance gift, the retelling of the story of Catherine McAuley and her legacy, and an assembly honoring one student and one faculty member as recipients of the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award.
