Fifth&Brannan co-founder and designer, Katie Wintrode, pairs up the male model Nick Cruit with an original tie from their line.

FIfth&Brannan co-founder Barron Cuadro helps Nick with his tie and collar while I talk to the female model Ismilda Botic and prepare her for her first(!) photoshoot.

My assistant Jiro Bantay holds a beauty dish to light Nick on a corner.

After finishing the first half of the morning scene, we head to Maritime to grab more shots.

We switched to a smaller lighting source with a gridded hotshoe and had Nick and Ismilda continue to play the couple they’re supposed to be for the day.

We started early on a Saturday morning in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square. I bought those coffee cups and saucers last minute at the local Goodwill to make the couple’s morning more authentic.

The plus sides of working early in the weekend are the lack of people in the area that is usually filled with tourists.

My stylist Jane Park whom I have worked with on several projects helps Nick roll his sleeve for a causal look.

The well deserve lunch with my crew at The Pub in Ghirardelli Square-pulled pork omelette a definite win.

Probably the most used accessory for the day--barndoors and a 40 degree grid to transform the day into night.

Jane helps Ismilda prepare for the night scene with great jewelry to finish out the great outfit.

The shoot ends at the Nick’s “place” and here I provide some direction to Nick and Ismilda who are on the couch.

I show some images off the camera to Ismilda and Nick and we were all amused of how their chemistry was captured.

I pose with the Fifth&Brannan cofounders Barron Cuadro and Katie Wintrode. The family portrait: assistant Nicole Velazco, stylist Jane Park, cofounders Barron Cuadro and Katie Wintrode, models Nick Cruit and Ismilda Botic, and myself at the end of our photoshoot.

With the main stars of the day and first-time models Nick Cruit and Ismilda Botic.

Nick showcases his last minute hidden talent by holding the chair between his legs to sign the chair leaving me amazed.

As tradition, I have the cast sign my chair after every photoshoot and here’s Ismilda leaving her mark.

Everyone waits their turn to sign the chair before all the equipment gets loaded.

My assistant Nicole and I arrive at San Jose’s Mighty Thredz warehouse where the band April Chase practices on a daily basis.

While we had limited space due to the equipment around the warehouse, I was able to isolate some areas to be used as simple backdrops for the band.

I also spotted areas outside of the warehouse and found the garage door to be ideal for clean solo and group portraits.

Here I photograph drummer Lachlan Franckx with the help of my ringflash set to full power to transform daytime to near nighttime.

I change the pace by switching to my toy plastic camera and use some natural light to photograph some candids.

I decided to bring a roll of film and use my plastic “toy” camera on the shoot to photograph some candid portraits.

Everyone had a kick out of seeing this white plastic camera being used on the photoshoot in contrast to my large DSLR. More importantly, the images from this camera surely captured their vibe and chemistry among each other.

I give Lachlan a preview of the shots we just took and proceed to the rest of the band members.

I first photographed April Chase in a San Francisco benefit concert “Dare To Love” in October 2010 hosted by HelpMahal.org and ThatsSoPinoy.com. While brief, I had a great time photographing them and getting to know who they all were. From that moment, I also became an instant fan after hearing their music and incredible ability to play live. And yes, that was just the rehearsal. Fortunately, I had the pleasure to take their promo pictures for their latest EP album “Still Breathing”. While they surely had a choice of photographers to choose from after requesting for one on their Facebook page, I was honored to have been chosen to do so. I communicated with the guitarist Tim Ferguson who sent me some images they were inspired by and from there, I was able to finalize the types of looks I wanted to achieve with them. While my assistant and I enjoyed our time working with them, I definitely cherished our sushi dinner afterwards complete with beer and saki to accompany our conversations and laughter. Pictured left to right here is: guitarist Mark Sahagun, drummer Lachlan Franckx, singer Carina Valdes, bassist Brian Walker, and guitarist Tim Ferguson.

I review the shooting schedule with Jessica Phan, cofounder of My BF’s Closet, and agreed we had a long day ahead of us with 11 “couples” for the 2011 calendar.

Thao Pham gets her game on as I photograph her for the sports-themed couple photos.

I give direction to Angelie Herreria who was not only one of the models for the shoot, but the talented makeup artist for all the ladies.

Carlos Anthony and Angelie Herreria pose as the hip-hop/urban couple.

I help Tristan Orlino pose as he “waters” the front lawn for his shoot with Jessica Phan.

No one complains when everyone gets to eat: pizza tastes real good after working for several hours.

I photograph the cofounders of the blog MyBFCloset.com Agnes Fernandez and Jessica Phan.

Photographed with my crew for the day: my stylist Jane Park and interns of MotionScope Studies, Dale Garcia, Grant Ventura, and Rinna Pera.

Nearly 8 hours later, the cofounders Jessica Phan and Agnes Fernandez and I survive the all-day shoot and still manage a smile to end the night.

73

A 2 hour shoot for me is hard work and so at the end of this 8 hour shoot, you can surely conclude that I was exhausted. As a matter of fact, everyone who was there from the very beginning until the end were all tired. Luckily, being in great company helps a whole lot and makes the time go by easier. I remember I pitched the idea of doing a calendar with San Jose-based bloggers My BF’s Closet awhile ago and surely didn’t see it all come down to one full day of shooting. Fortunately, the cofounders Jessica Phan and Agnes Fernandez took care the hard part of a production photoshoot: the scouting, wardrobe,

hair stylist, makeup artist, and even the food! For me, all I had to was “just” photograph them all. But in reality, I was like the conductor of this orchestra and was definitely a feat to manage more than 25 people including the models and assistants to make it all happen in a timed schedule. While it was surely hard work, working with talented and creative people was surely a pleasure. Best of all, I get to enjoy this 2011 calendar until the end of year as it is hung on the wall near my workstation.

Our talent for the day, rapper and producer IQ (Internationally Quaint) of San Jose, looks on in as my assistants for the day Diane Ayson and John Enriquez unload the car while I give driving instructions to Vinette Guiterrez who is my videographer for the shoot.

I assist John setting up the boom arm for the 22” beauty dish to be attached and used.

Since IQ’s manager was present, I thought I’d show her and the rest of the crew the progress we are making by shooting tethered. This allows the images to be shown almost instantly on my laptop throughout the shoot making it easier for the production team to see images and make any changes or adjustments neededd

My stylist Jane Park whom I continuously work with, creates the “set” for the shoot. She is included in the shoot’s concept from the very beginning and is given a sketch of what I have in mind in which she’s able to turn into reality.

I give IQ some directions for the shoot while Jane continuously works on the set. IQ’s manager Rowena gives some feedback too as I am always open to suggestions.

Behind-the-scenes videographer Vinette Guiterrez, Diane, and Rowena look on as I review the initial images.

I squat among the cables that litter the floor to make tethering possible.

Throughout the shoot, I provide some feedback so IQ can act out the scenes as we discussed in our meeting and treatment that I wrote up prior to the shoot.

Here’s a good shot of what it looks like on “set”: typically a lot of people watching as the photoshoot unfolds.

A closer shot of a SOOC (straight ouf of camera) shot on my laptop

As tradition, I take a family portrait with the entire crew and talent at the end of the shoot.

Along with that tradition, it is a must to take a “funny face” photo right after!

90

I was referred to Rowena, the manager of rapper and producer IQ (Intelligently Quaint) of San Jose by a friend from college. We were able to discuss on the phone immediately and were interested in working together. Prior to meeting with them in Palo Alto, I gave IQ a questionnaire to fill out so I can get to know him better in order to provide a thorough concept. When he mentioned he wanted to be a scientist when he was a child, the image of him donning a scientist’s lab coat and conjuring up beats and rhythms by mixing and extracting sounds was perfect. This is when “The Sound Lab” was born.

As I work closely with IQ, the entire crew can see instantly the images that pop up on the laptop. I occasionally give it a look as the images are not displayed on my camera when I shoot tethered.

I got a call from Wesam in late March while I was in LA after being referred by a previous client, Anna Lisa. After having a meeting and dicussing what he’s looking for in his portfolio, we finally agreed in producing a lookbook he can use to distribute that will include a variety of looks. This is where I am always grateful in having a wonderful stylist, Jane Park, to work closely with the client. Her eye for coordinating looks for the client just makes my job totally easy and also gives confidence in the client that the looks will be just right for the camera.

Being on a shortlist of photographers has its benefits when getting last minute portrait opportunities. I was contacted by Zoneil Maharag, editor of chief, of Oh Dang! webzine a day before his scheduled interview with Donwill, one part of the three rappers who make Tanya Morgan. Not really knowing the artist and his work, I did my immediate homework and looked him up on the internet. For me, it is very important to know as much as I can about the client before working with them. I am sure the client also appreciates it when I can mention something relevant or most recent that he completed or is currently working on. So for Donwill, I was able to talk about his latest tour at the time and what he is looking forward to in their (Tanya Morgan) next city visit. While I love working with clients and achieving great images, I definitely work harder in building genuine relationships.

I check in with Anna Lisa as she gets prepped and discuss the shoot that is just about to happen after setting up the lighting and taking test shots.

Anna Lisa gets last minute touch ups as I stand nearby jealous that I’m not getting the same attention.

The crew remains happy and comfortable as long as their stomachs and energy are just as happy!

I grab some tightly cropped headshots to complete the look of Anna Lisa’s set of images.

John Enriquez records the behind the scenes as I give insight to lighting to Diane Ayson, a recent attendee of a private workshop whom I invited, and Dale Garcia, an intern of MotionScope Studies.

The family poses for a portrait: Diane Ayson, Dale Garcia, JuJu Li, Anna Lisa, myself, Anna Nave, John Enriquez, and Nicole Velazco.

I pose with the talented Anna Lisa after she signed my “Photographer’s Chair” pictured on the left.

I can thank social media for connecting me with Anna Lisa. To be more exact, it started with her tweeting me (Twitter) for us to work together. While she worked on her single “Bad Girl” with my friend J-Ricz whom I introduced her to, we determined what kind of imagery that can accompany her single when released. With the help of her hair stylist JuJu Li and makeup artists Anna Nave whom she enlisted, we were able to produce some fierce portraits that embodies the song’s title. While she put together her own wardrobe, I was definitely more impressed to learn that she created those shoulder pads herself--bead by bead! I am definitely proud to have worked with Anna Lisa and can say I helped kickstart her singing career with the use of my network and creative direction. I am surely looking forward to the next collaboration!

After arriving at Frjtz Fries in Hayes 186

Realizing that we were already behind schedule, Agnes started to work on our talent Jane Park’s hair outside of the shop.

The first shot of the day with John as my stand-in model as Jane prepares for the shoot.

Makeup artist Karen Wan applies the final touches on Jane while Jessica gets the hair sorted out.

I can’t stress the importance of a great crew: everyone being on the same page allows greater efficiency and can surely multiply the fun on the set. Here, Karen watches Jessica and Agnes put on the final touches while I finish setting up my camera’s settings.

As Jane prepares to play “John,” I give some pointers of how she can pose and play with our props on the table.

Jane playing “John” perfectly as I photograph away from various angles.

With the photoshoot being a multi-location shoot, we head to the beautiful San Francisco’s Dolores Park.

Other folks at the park surely gave us a second glance as we had quite a number of people on our makeshift set.

Jane plays “John” again and I joke around pretending she is the king as Jessica and Agnes adjust the sleeves of her blazer.

For this shot, I decided to shoot with a bare bulb (as seen John holding the light) to turn day into night.

Valley in San Francisco, we waited for the owner to open up shop for us and in the meantime, stylists Agnes Fernandez, Jessica Phan, her boyfriend Tristan Orlino and I spent the time discussing the (long) shoot we have ahead of us.

188

For the production shoots in which involve location scouting, props, makeup and hair stylists, and assistants, I’ve enlisted Jane Park as my sole stylist to make my concepts a reality. When I was introduced to her, it was intended for me to photograph her. Since I was currently busy with several shoots on the pipeline, I had to postpone her shoot. For the meantime, I asked if she was interested in assisting me as a stylist and she happily agreed to the position. Ever since, I have trusted her for the shoots that require plenty of planning and she has definitely helped make my concepts to reality by coordinating everything from colors, props, to the makeup, hair, and of course wardrobe. When there was finally time to work on her shoot, I pitched the idea of creating the story of a boy-meets-girl but using her to play both “Jane” and “John.” She agreed to the androgynous shoot and I enlisted my friend Karen Wan as the makeup artist and Jessica Phan and Agnes Fernandez of MyBFCloset.com to help out with the clothing and accessories selection. What literally took an entire day resulted in the great image series entitled “John and Jane” with the help of course of the fantastic crew. I give Jane some feedback on the poses by showing her the images to help guide her through the next set of images.

Me, makeup artist Angelie Herreria, and Jane look at Nicki’s reaction to seeing herself on the screen.

243

I first met Nicki Sun in Kollaboration SF in 2010, an event that pulled together many musical and performing artists together on one stage for a competition. I photographed her briefly with her cameraman Daniel Fontaine for a quick portrait and expressed my interest of working together again in the near future. Nearly a year later with a concept in mind, we find ourselves opening the very brand new 2011 year with a photoshoot. As it took a couple of months of planning, my stylist Jane Park was able to take my concept of Nicki Sun transforming from a cocoon to a social butterfly to reality. The talented Angelie Herreria, whom I previously worked with on the My BF’s Closet calendar shoot, was able to lend her talents as well for Nicki. With about 4 hours total, we came away from the shoot with the satisfaction of depicting Nicki’s transformation beautifully just as I had envisioned within a set of images.

245

While Nicki is used to being in front of the camera interviewing others, both video and still cameras are on her solely for this shoot.

Jane holds the tule off-camera so I can photograph Nicki with her dress that is blowing “in the wind”.

As Angelie and Jane attend to Nicki, Daniel takes the time to interview me and asks to give an update.

The folks from DoubleHelix Clothing stop by to check out the shoot and it’s definitely a larger group for Nicki to be in front of in her first official photoshoot.

I had the pleasure of working with Angelie again as she provided fantastic makeup with amazing color palettes for Nicki to match the dress and mood.

Despite feeling nervous a bit, I gave my best shot in explaining how the day is going and try to explain some technical aspects of the shoot.

Despite being surrounded by many people (and lights), Nicki’s natural ability to be comfortable in front of a video camera translates equally in the still images.

Jane reviews the images that are tethered to my laptop live and checks for the small details that can be adjusted.
