Expect the unexpected The new season of Arts & Culture at JW3 Do you have a confession to make or a secret to hide? We all have something to reveal. Come and enjoy Con/Fess as we bring together 15 artists and performers as they tell all and explore JW3’s theme for this season, Secrets and Surprises. For more surprise and delight try our music events. Jazz at JW3 is on the first Sunday of each month – a huge hit in our launch season. We also have other musical treats in store this season, with great performers such as Twelfth Day, Ester Rada and the English Chamber Chorus. And an experience not to miss is the showing of silent Yiddish comedy classic East and West with a live, contemporary musical performance of the score. If you have more of a theatrical bent, come see either our drama group, Spielers, revive the Broadway classic, The Melting Pot, or Schmaltz – the Amy Grimehouse celebration of the best in trashy camp, transgressive culture – Jewish-style.

There will be more of the unexpected this season when we mix food and performance, with An Evening of Food and Jazz with Jay Rayner. A theme which we continue with our Foodie Film Club, in which we serve up a classic film, along with delicious food from our celebrated restaurant, Zest. And what happens when film and the Bible come together? The new film, Noah, gives us a starting point for what we’re sure will be a fascinating discussion in The Flood: Movies & Midrash. For more celebration of all things celluloid come to our Comedy Film Club, screening three classic comedies selected and introduced by three classy comedians. And we roll out the red carpet for our pre-Oscars fun in the company of an actual Oscar winner. All this and our daily screenings of the best new film releases in our plush cinema. This is just a small selection of the great Arts & Culture events that we have lined up for you this season. Take a look at the full picture at www.jw3.org.uk

We screen the film followed by a Q&A with Juan’s director, Kasper Holten (Director of Opera, The Royal Opera House) who is joined by Norman Lebrecht – one of the most widely-read commentators on music, culture and cultural politics.

An Evening of Food and Jazz with Jay Rayner

Q&A 6pm, FREE

Music 8.30pm, £15 Ester Rada Ester Rada’s cross-cultural sound is a deep reflection of the Israeli born Ethiopian’s heritage, gracefully combining Ethio-Jazz, Funk, Soul and R&B. Her increasing popularity has seen her tour the US, Canada and Europe, including appearing at the most recent Glastonbury Festival. She warmed up for Alicia Keys at her Israel concert, where the pop star described her as “amazing!” JW3 is delighted to feature Ester in celebration of International Women’s Day.

HANDEL ISRAEL IN EGYPT Thursday 13 March

7.30pm, £12

Score: East and West 7.30pm, £15 Lemez Lovaz, Moshikop, Rohan Kriwaczek A Silent Film with a Live Music Score. In Sidney M. Goldin and Ivan Abramson’s silent movie East and West (1923), streetwise New Yorker Mollie (Molly Picon) travels to her demure cousin’s wedding in a traditional Polish shtetl. Lemez Lovas (Oi Va Voi, Shtetl Superstars, Yiddish Twist Orchestra), directs guest musicians Moshikop and Rohan Kriwaczek in an irreverent live performance of a score for East and West. As love blossoms between East and West, and the musical narrative unfolds, traditional and modern worlds are brought into collision. Produced by Yad Arts

English Chamber Choir and english players on period instruments As a musical prelude to the festival of Passover, The English Chamber Choir, one of London’s leading groups of its size perform Handel’s graphic musical setting of the story of the Exodus depicting the flight of the Israelites from the tyranny of the Pharaohs. This was clearly fertile territory for Handel: you can hear the flies and locusts buzzing, the hailstones raining down and later the Egyptian horses and riders being thrown unceremoniously into the sea.

Spielers presents The Melting Pot

Schmaltz: A Big gay Night Out

8pm, £10

7.30pm, £10

Presented by Spielers, the JW3 amateur dramatic group Directed by Debbie Chazen

Amy Grimehouse

Written by Israel Zangwill, The Melting Pot was one of the most successful productions in the history of Broadway. Depicting turn-of the-20th century New York, it charts the story of three generations of a Russian immigrant family as they carve a future in the melting pot of America. This four-act drama captures the ups and downs of the immigrant experience with insight, sensitivity and humour.

Sunday 16 February

Amy Grimehouse, London’s Queens of immersive cinema/arts nightclubbing bring you an evening celebrating the best in trashy camp, transgressive culture. Come and watch 1999 Cult Classic Movie But I’m A Cheerleader with dancers, performance sideshows, cocktails a plenty, and our special SCHMALTZ disco – spinning only the best tunes from Jewish Gay Icons past and present – think Liza, Babs, Bette, The Barry Sisters, Neil Sedaka, Bazza Manilow, Dana International and Gary Barlow (alright, not Gary Barlow). Featuring a trailer from Rainbow Jews. Part of the Camden LGBT History Month.

SHYLOCK 7.30pm, £15 Shylock has always divided opinion. Is he a villain or a victim? Or is he someone even more intriguing. There is no doubt Shylock is hard done by in The Merchant of Venice, but does he bring it on himself? As one of only two Jewish men in the whole of Shakespeare, he has been portrayed in ways which reflected how Jews were popularly viewed – from comic villain in Shakespeare’s day to a victim of racial discrimination nowadays. This internationally recognised one-person show was written & directed by Gareth Armstrong. Performed by Guy Masterson, sound by Simon Slater.

Sunday 6 April
