VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH INTO LONELINESS IN OLDER ADULTS AT HOME Researchers at the University of Queensland’s Institute for Social Science Research are looking for older adults living at home to volunteer for a study on loneliness and daily activities. The hope is that this research will contribute to improving programs which support the quality of life for older adults. The study involves filling out a questionnaire on your subjective wellbeing and also writing down your activities over a 24-hour period in a time diary. Jubilee Community Care is assisting this research by mailing out this questionnaire, which should arrive in participants’ letterboxes soon. Participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you are interested in helping this important research, please complete the questionnaire and return it by post using the stamped return envelope. To thank you for your time, all participants in the study will be entered into a prize draw for a $200 Coles/Myer gift card. Some participants also will be invited back to provide more information about their activities. If you are selected, you will be asked to keep a time-use diary over a period of two weeks and to wear an actigraphy watch - a device similar to a Fitbit that can record your movement digitally. Researchers will also invite you to talk about your daily activities in an interview. Participants in this in-depth part of the study will each receive a $40 gift card. For more information, please contact lead researcher Dr Jack Lam by email at j.lam@uq.edu.au or phone 3346 7630. This study is conducted by the Institute for Social Science Research and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course.

FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS, JUBILEE NOW MARKS ITS MILESTONE 30TH BIRTHDAY A brainstorming session by a group of people sitting on bean bags has forever changed the lives of the elderly in Brisbane’s northwest to southwestern corridor. Out of that session in 1989, investigating how to best meet the needs of the elderly around Paddington, was born Jubilee Community Care. Now in 2019, Jubilee staff circa 2002: Board member Denise Jubilee celebrates its 30th birthday. Bolland, receptionist Meredith Beck, coordinator Michele Willkinson, manager Judith Rodins,
In its inception Jubilee was a Community coordinator Sandra Veldman and administrator Diann Amps. Options Program, a pilot project by the University of Queensland’s Social Work Department and funded jointly by the Australian and Queensland governments. The project was overseen by a Steering Committee under the auspices of the Aged Care Unit of the Red Hill Paddington Community Centre. Current Jubilee Management Committee president Judy Salecich reported it was a great success and, in 1996, Jubilee Community Care Association Inc was established as a separate incorporated body. “Many individuals contributed significantly to Jubilee Community Care in those early years,” Dr Salecich said. “Judith Rodins was the first manager (coordinator), leading the pilot program and then the organisation for 14 years from 1989 to 2002. Judith was also a board member for several years.” Dr Salecich reported Joan Sherrin-Moody was one of Jubilee’s first care workers, a committee member and Board President. The late Kathleen Szabo, a client, was an inaugural member of the Steering Committee and Board member until 2004. Also, Jenny Bostock was a member of the inaugural Steering Committee and Board President from 1996 to 2004. The organisation obtained two capital grants through Queensland Health’s Home and Community Care (HACC) Program to purchase first the property at Jubilee Tce, Paddington, then later its current property at 87 Central Ave, Indooroopilly. In 2002 Jubilee Community Care moved from Paddington to temporary premises at Toowong and, in 2003, to its current premises. Over the years Jubilee has had subtle name changes - from Jubilee Community Care Association Inc to Jubilee Community Care Incorporated (2009) and then Jubilee Community Care Inc (2013). Jubilee will host its 30th birthday celebrations later this year. Watch this space to find out more. JUBILEE SUPPORTS ROYAL COMMISSION Jubilee Community Care is fully supportive of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in Australia, announced by the Prime Minister in September. We all want a safe, high quality and high performing aged care system. While the vast majority of Australia’s aged care services and their dedicated staff deliver good quality care, there have been examples of unacceptable failures that must be prevented from happening in the future. To this end, the Royal Commission aims to examine issues and examples of what is not working - where the aged care system has failed, and; explore what needs to change in order to meet the changing needs and expectations of the growing numbers of older Australians. Along with all aged care providers across the country, Jubilee has responded to a request from the Royal Commission for information. In this I have outlined how: • We recruit, induct and train wonderful and dedicated staff and then provide education programs aligned to the needs of clients using our service. • We measure our service model through client satisfaction surveys and feedback. In a recent survey we averaged 97 per cent client satisfaction across the following categories; providing choice of services, consistency/punctuality/ quality of support workers, and treating clients with dignity and respect. I commented further that: • Jubilee’s Stay Standing Falls Prevention Program Team were a finalist in the Excellence in Care Awards at the Leading Aged Care Services Qld State Conference in 2016. And, this year our Client Support Coordination Team is a finalist in the Team Category Award. • In 2018, Jubilee Community Care achieved certification for our Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015 and we have successfully met Government compliance assessments of our service as recently as 2017. I am truly proud and honoured to work amongst the high calibre staff employed at Jubilee Community Care. The Royal Commission is aiming to deliver an interim report in October 2019 and a final report in April 2020. JUBILEE’S CLIENT SUPPORT COORDINATION TEAM RECOGNISED WITH STATE AWARD Jubilee Community Care’s Client Support Coordination Team is a winner. The group of six staff have taken out the Team category of the Excellence in Age Services Awards 2019 (Queensland). The awards, run by Leading Age Jubilee staff Lorraine Kiss, Leigh Willett, Nicky Panagopoulos and Brigid Batchelor Services Australia collected the award on behalf of the team at the gala awards night at the Gold Coast. (LASA) in mid-March, aim to promote and recognise excellence across the age services industry and celebrate the passion and achievements of organisations, teams and individuals in the service of older Australians. The win means the team will go on to compete for the national award, to be presented at LASA’s National Congress in Adelaide in October. The Jubilee team, led by client support manager Nicky Panagopoulos, includes Sandy Kelly, Lorraine Kiss, Kristie Reed, Vicki Burden and Brigid Batchelor. Collectively, the team has more than 100 years’ experience of caring and arranging personalised, consistent and reliable services for clients, with 35 of the 100 years employed at Jubilee. Jubilee director Shaun Riley said he was particularly proud of the team and their recognition. “To be named as the Queensland team category winner is truly an outstanding achievement and shows our passion for providing quality care and support services for the people we serve,” Mr Riley said. “To be recognised in this way highlights the standing and respect that we have and the leading position Jubilee has amongst the other passionate aged care services in our industry. “I am so proud and honoured in my role of supporting our team’s work at Jubilee. I congratulate everyone on this magnificent achievement.” Enriching later life

By having a greater focus on IT Support
• Recognise, research and introduce new services (eg. gardening, handyman services, hair and nail cutting). Jubilee can arrange access to these services. Please contact our office for details. • Food preparation – could teach as oppose to just doing it. This would increase the helpfulness of the visits. We will look into this, thank you. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF FALLS AND GAIN GREATER MOBILITY AND INDEPENDENCE Falls are a major health issue in the community with about 30 per cent of adults aged over 65 falling at least once a year. Having a fall has many detrimental effects. Acccording to the Australia and New Zealand Falls Prevention Society, falls account for 40 per cent of injury-related deaths and one per cent of total deaths in this age group. But the effects are not just physical. Falls can result in restriction of activity, reduced quality of life, disability, and decreased mobility which often results in increased dependency on others. But there is help for people who want to improve their balance, confidence and mobility, and decrease their risk of falls. Jubilee runs regular Stay Standing falls prevention programs, helping you maintain your independence. Stay Standing is the only accredited falls prevention program in Australia and includes a home program of exercises. Sessions are held on Fridays for eight weeks and each one includes exercises, presentations from allied health specialists and morning tea. Program topics covered include:
»» Assessment with physiotherapists Monique or Tim and home program of exercises to prevent falls in week one. »» Falls contingency planning, SMART goals and managing chronic pain. »» Managing continence with a nurse and Healthy Bones with a dietician. »» Safety at home with an occupational therapist, Vision with an optometrist and Hearing with a audiologist. »» Footwear to stay safe and comfortable on your feet with a podiatrist and Safety away from home with the Queensland Police Service. »» Managing medication and sleep with a pharmacist. »» First Aid with the Queensland Ambulance Service including recognising common senior emergencies. »» Exercise review and outcomes and a celebration in the final week. The next Stay Standing course will begin at the Bellbowrie Tavern, Bellbowrie, on May 3. Another course will be held at Indooroopilly, starting July 19. JUNE 2019 ACTIVITIES CALENDAR
THE INFLUENZA SEASON IS LOOMING SO BOOK IN NOW FOR YOUR VACCINATION The influenza season is just around the corner and now is the time to get vaccinated. The flu can strike at any time of year and remains a common cause of hospitalisation and death in Australia. According to the Federal Government’s Department of Health, seniors with a weaker immune system, and people with diabetes or kidney problems are at a higher risk of a serious case of the flu. Vaccination is the best protection against the flu, which typically strikes hardest between June and September. The flu strains constantly change so you need a new vaccine every year to make sure you stay protected. And immunisation not only protects individuals, but others in the community by reducing the spread of the preventable disease. From the date of vaccination it takes two weeks for the vaccine to become effective and for immunity to develop. The vaccine is funded under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and free for people aged over 65 years and those with specified medical conditions including cardiac disease, chronic respiratory conditions, immunocompromising conditions, diabetes and renal disease. The 2019 vaccines will be available from April subject to local supply arrangements. While they are free for those who are eligible, sometimes your doctor might charge you a consultation fee. For more information on the influenza vaccine phone the National Immunisation Hotline between 8am-5.30pm on 1800 671 811 or contact Queensland Health on 13 432 584. If you do get the flu you can relieve the symptoms by: • Staying home and resting • Drinking fluids, particularly water • Taking paracetamol to reduce pain and fever and using decongestant medicines, and • Gargling warm salty water for a sore throat and cough. • Seek help from your doctor if your illness does not improve after a few days.
