MASKS DONATION A TIMELY GIFT A big thanks to AuExpress Global and Catalyst who donated medical face masks to Jubilee Community Care recently. The donation of up to 50,000 masks to Jubilee and other care providers throughout Australia, arrived in April during the national shortage of masks due to COVID-19. The donations were organised by Leading Age Services Australia. It’s great to see businesses working together to achieve great results for healthcare staff and clients.

JUBILEE WANDERERS ACTIVITIES UPDATE The Jubilee Wanderers activities program is still suspended due to COVID-19 although we are hoping that our buses and wonderful day trips will resume soon. Our activities coordinator Vicki has been champing at the bit to get out and about again but even when activities do resume the numbers on buses will be limited. Also still suspended is our exercise and hydrotherapy classes. Participants will be notified when they recommence. Your patience at this time is appreciated.

DON’T MISS OUT ON EKKA FUN THIS YEAR With the 2020 Ekka being cancelled due to COVID-19, Jubilee Community Care has decided to bring the Ekka to you! This year Jubilee will be giving each client a Jubilee Ekka bag full of treats - think Bertie Beetle chocolates and other delights! The bags will be delivered to your home during August so keep an eye out when your support worker visits. Did you know it is just the third time in its 143-year history that the Ekka has not proceeded. It was previously cancelled in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu epidemic and in 1942 when the grounds were used as a World War II staging depot. The RNA has a strong history of using the Brisbane Showgrounds to help the community in times of need, including being used as a treatment centre in 1918 for those suffering from Spanish Influenza. More recently it also was used as an evacuation centre for those impacted by the 2011 Brisbane floods. Most of the Ekka competitions have been cancelled however the beef cattle led steer competition will go ahead in Gympie on August 5 while judging for the prime beef competition will be held on August 6 at Silverdale. Other competitions still running include bush poetry and digital photography. Of course it would not be Ekka time without the iconic strawberry sundae. In 2019 more than 180,000 sundaes were sold. While you can’t get your hands on one this year try out these strawberry sundae-inspired cupcakes. They come courtesy of www.ekka.com.au/blog. Enjoy. INGREDIENTS ● 225g salted butter ● 1 cup white sugar ● 1 tsp grated lime or lemon ● 60ml milk ● 200g self-raising flour ● 10ml vanilla extract ● 4 large room temperature free range eggs METHOD Beat the sugar and butter with the whisk attachment until light and fluffy. The sugar must be dissolved right through. Put the mixer on low and add the self-raising flour, eggs, vanilla and zest. Mix well to form a smooth batter before pouring into a greased cupcake tin or cupcake papers. Bake for about 15-18 minutes at 170c until brown and until a skewer comes out clean from the middle. Once cooked, remove from the oven and cool! Once cooled pipe the cupcakes with whipped cream, some sliced strawberries and white chocolate curls or bark. JUBILEE’S COVID-19 RESPONSE IS ONGOING Jubilee Community Care continues to take steps to enhance the safety and wellbeing of our clients and our wonderful staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. As previously reported, all of our staff are trained, and their competencies assessed, in infection control and hand hygiene. We have mandated that all staff complete online COVID-19 infection control training provided by the Australian Government. Staff are now required to check their temperature before leaving home for work and not to attend work if their temperature is 37.5°C or above or they feel unwell. We have introduced a “Quarantine Payment” for permanent and casually employed staff. This will cover a staff member’s normal rostered wages for up to two weeks (also applied to casual employees who would otherwise not receive payment) if they need to self-isolate. Our support workers phone clients ahead of their scheduled service to check on the client’s health status in relation to COVID-19 and influenza symptoms. If a client has any such symptoms alternative service provisions are arranged. Please seek medical advice and inform the Jubilee Community Care office by phoning 3871 3220 prior to your service if you have COVID-19 or influenza symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat or headache. Jubilee also has mandated the wearing of face masks for support workers when providing a personal care service (assistance with showering/bathing) lasting longer than 30 minutes. The wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE), including a face mask, will assist in reducing the likelihood of an infectious transmission. We have strongly encouraged staff to get a flu vaccination, our Enterprise Agreement provides free vaccination for all staff. Recently a letter was mailed to all clients detailing these steps as well as the social distancing and PPE procedures our support workers follow in providing your services. These procedures and precautions are detailed in the table on the next page. The measures outlined above are to safeguard the wellbeing of our clients and support workers, and to assist in the control of community transmission of COVID-19 and influenza as the winter season is upon us. The Jubilee - Jubilee Community Care’s Newsletter

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT POLICY Jubilee Community Care has amended its procedures surrounding personal protective equipment (PPE) and other precautions as a result of COVID-19. Our support workers are now required to check their temperatures before work. Staff with a temperature over 37.5°C will consider their symptoms although an isolated temperature is not enough to warrant concern. If staff have a temperature of 37.5°C or above and symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, headache or tiredness, they will not work and will seek medical advice. Other precautions affecting care services are outlined below. SERVICE TYPE

STAY CONNECTED PROJECT SET TO RESUME Jubilee Community Care is set to relaunch its innovative Stay Connected project after restrictions around COVID-19 forced its suspension. The project is expected to resume soon and interest in its programs is now being taken. Stay Connected includes four free education and exercise programs conducted by local businesses that Jubilee has partnered with. Collectively, the four programs will form a pilot study by the University of Queensland whose researchers will gather data, evaluate and publish the findings of the benefits of seniors attending the innovative activities. The Stay Connected Project, funded by the Department of Health, includes:  Cooking for One or Two – Presented by Food Solutions: Dieticians will provide lessons in basic cooking, nutrition and healthy ageing in a positive social environment. There will be nutritious cooking demonstrations and you get to share meals with participants during the six-week program.  Mindful Connections: Develop life skills for meaningful relationships and wellbeing – Presented by Conscious Beginnings: This training and coaching aims to empower and support older people to reduce their isolation and improve their wellbeing, resilience, mental health and self-care. It will run for eight weeks.  Body Moves – Presented by BodyTrack Exercise Physiology: This targets functional strength, falls prevention and social interaction, which helps to maintain independence and improve quality of life. The eight-week program includes an initial assessment and one 30-minute session each week. Participants require clearance from their doctor to take part.  SAFER Driver Situation Awareness Training – Presented by University of the Sunshine Coast: This program provides participants with online training to help drivers identify and skilfully react to potential road hazards. Access to a computer and internet is needed but only basic computer knowledge is required. All programs are open to seniors 65+ with good general health and who are socially active. They are also open to Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders aged 50+. Participants can register for one or multiple programs and must have their own transport. For more information or to register your interest please phone Jubilee Community Care on 3871 3220 or email events@jccagedcare.org.au The Jubilee - Jubilee Community Care’s Newsletter
