JUBILEE LEADS INNOVATIVE STUDY TO KEEP SENIORS CONNECTED AND HEALTHY Are you worried about your nutrition, driving skills or health as you age? Or perhaps you want to improve your mental health and wellbeing? Jubilee Community Care in collaboration with local service providers is running a pilot study with free activity and information programs around these topics. The Stay Connected Program pilot study, funded by the Department of Health, includes:  Cooking for One or Two – Presented by Food Solutions: Dieticians will provide lessons in basic cooking, nutrition and healthy ageing in a positive social environment. There will be nutritious cooking demonstrations and you get to share meals with participants. Once a week for 6 weeks.  Body Moves – Presented by BodyTrack Exercise Physiology: Get moving under the expert guidance of an exercise physiologist. This program targets functional strength, falls prevention and social interaction, which helps to maintain independence and improve quality of life. The eight-week program includes an initial assessment and one 30-minute session each week. Participants require clearance from their doctor to take part.  Mindful Connections: Develop life skills for meaningful relationships and wellbeing – Presented by Conscious Beginnings: This training and coaching aims to empower and support older people to reduce their isolation and improve their wellbeing, resilience, mental health and self-care. Scientific studies suggest that mindfulness can ease physical and psychological issues that the elderly experience. The program will run once a week for eight weeks. Participants will need a letter from their doctor to participate. They also will need access to a computer and the internet but only basic computer knowledge is required.  SAFER Driver Situation Awareness Training – Presented by University of the Sunshine Coast: This program will provide participants with classroom and online training to help drivers identify and skilfully react to potential road hazards. This includes an online program over three months so access to a computer and the internet is needed however only basic computer knowledge is required. TENDER CARE AND A LOVE OF COLOUR LEADS TO GARDENING AWARD FOR BRIDGET A longtime love of gardening and a green thumb have earned Jubilee Community Care client Bridget some much deserved recognition. Bridget, 91, won first place in the Courtyard Garden category of the 2019 My Home Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate people living in Queensland’s public housing who take the time to establish and maintain beautiful gardens and how their work helps improve their local communities. Bridget said she was delighted to win the award. “I got a shock and couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I have been working on the garden for 23 years and any extra money I have I spend on that.” Gardening has been a lifelong love for Bridget. “At home in England I had a big garden,” she said. “I have always been very garden proud. And then I lived in Bellbowrie and created a beautiful garden. I was very sad to leave it behind when I moved.” For her efforts, Bridget won a $100 Bunnings voucher and a certificate at the awards ceremony in Fortitude Valley.

CHANGES TO MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE There have been some changes to the Jubilee Community Care management committee since our last newsletter. A fresh face joined the committee during Jubilee’s Dr Jack Lam Sue Paulsen Annette Wotton Annual General Meeting in October last year. Jubilee also bid farewell to two longtime committee members who will be missed. At the AGM president Dr Judy Salecich, vice president Mark Vining and treasurer Ross Beck all retained their positions on the committee. Likewise Sabina Janstrom, Joe Morris and Dr Alex Robinson were re-elected as committee members. University of Queensland research fellow Dr Jack Lam was elected as a new member of the committee. Jubilee worked with Dr Lam in 2019, supporting his research into elderly people who live independently and focussing on their daily activities, their social networks, and their sense of loneliness. Jubilee’s work with Dr Lam will continue in 2020 when his team will gather data, evaluate and publish findings of the benefits of older people attending Jubilee’s Stay Connected program (see pages 2-3). At the AGM former members Annette Wotton and Sue Paulsen stepped down from their roles. Annette joined the committee in 2011, volunteering for her eight years in the role of secretary. Sue was a member of the committee from 2009 and was treasurer for the first four years of her membership. Everyone at Jubilee Community Care thanks them for their contributions and wishes them all the best in their next endeavours.

RESPECT, RECOGNITION OF JUBILEE GROWS Last newsletter we shared the news that Jubilee was in the running for a number of state and national awards in late 2019 after celebrating some wins earlier in the year. The functions have passed but unfortunately Jubilee was not successful in picking up any more awards. So Jubilee finished 2019 having won the Team Category at Leading Age Services Australia’s Excellence in Age Care Awards (Queensland), missing out on the national award. It also was named one of five state finalists in the Social Change Maker category of the Telstra Business Awards. While the year did not end as Jubilee had hoped, it has given the organisation the chance to showcase the passion and dedication of its staff and celebrate its success over the past 30 years. “We have long known it but 2019 sealed for Jubilee that our work is recognised and respected by the aged care industry,” director Shaun Riley said. “These wonderful achievements are recognition of the work of our staff and that of past employees. We are all very proud of our history and of our success in 2019.”

SERVICE CHANGES WITH PUBLIC HOLIDAYS There will be some changes to services provided by Jubilee Community Care on the upcoming public holidays on Wednesday, January 1 (New Year’s Day) and Monday, January 27 (Australia Day public holiday). Essential services of personal care, medication assistance and meal preparation will be provided on these days while domestic assistance, social support, respite and shopping will not be. Also, the office will be closed on these public holidays. For more information phone the Jubilee office on 3871 3220.

SMART DEVICES KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SAFETY AND INDEPENDENCE AT HOME Jubilee Community Care has trialled with success new technology to support your safety and independence at home. Umps Health has created smart plugs to detect interactions with your existing appliances, like when you use the kettle, open the refrigerator or turn on or off the TV. The Umps Health Smart Home technology learns your regular daily habits and only raises an alert when things are unusual. If something does go wrong, your family or a care provider are contacted so they can send support. For example, it will raise an alert if the kettle is usually boiled before 9am in the morning but nothing has been used that morning or the refrigerator is usually opened frequently during the day but has only been opened four times in the previous 24 hours. This could indicate a decline in appetite, which indicates a range of health issues. The technology does not require you to wear a pendant or press a button to work. It works completely in the background. You can choose which appliances Umps Health is installed on. It is suggested selecting appliances that you use regularly like the refrigerator, kettle, TV, microwave and a bedside lamp. It also focuses on detecting problems before they require hospitalisation by looking for subtle changes in routine that occur days before an incident. This allows earlier action to be taken and can prevent the need to go to hospital. Umps Health doesn’t require an existing internet connection and only takes about 10 minutes to install and setup. You choose who receives alerts and sees information about your wellbeing. Up to five nominated contacts can be registered to an individual user. There are no lock-in contracts. Clients on Home Care Packages may be able to use their package funding to pay for Umps Health Technology. If you are interested in finding out more phone Jubilee Community Care on 3871 3220. Alternatively, you can visit www.umpshealth.com

COUNCIL DONATION AIDS CELEBRATION Jubilee Community Care has received a Brisbane City Council Seniors Celebration donation. The money, received last November, was put towards Jubilee’s client Christmas party held at Boulevard Gardens, Indooroopilly last month.
