JCCs Biggest Losers Gain Powerful Tools
Aquatics Camps Come to Milldale!
The JCC’s Biggest Loser contest was created to give participants the tools & support they need to lose weight. The two winners won iPod Shuffles but more importantly, gained confidence and learned how to lose weight in a healthy way. “I have been on and off the dieting roller coaster for years. I joined the Biggest Loser because there is power in numbers,” says Miriam, one of our amazing winners. “I was always more successful when I dieted with someone. There were sixty other people signed up for this and I didn’t want to be at the bottom or the weakest link!” Every Sunday, Miriam knew that she would be facing the scale and her trainer, Sivan. This accountability helped her control her eating. Exercising was another challenge for Miriam–but the 31.8 pounds she lost was worth it! Although she has a long road ahead of her, Miriam believes the JCC’s Biggest Loser program has put her on the right path. “This program was a great first step and has propelled me to keep going. I really looked forward to seeing my trainers, they made the fitness room not seem like the gallows.”
Last summer we introduced a new Aquatics camp at the Owings Mills JCC for ages 11-18. This year, we are excited to move the program up to Camp Milldale where we will be expanding it to ages 9 and 10. Sasha Sytov started swimming at the “J” when he was young and then became a member of the swim team. Last year Sasha participated in the Aquatics Leadership Camp to learn about leadership and pool-side safety. “I came out of the program knowing how to respond in emergency situations,” says Sasha. “My favorite part of the program was going snorkeling in the pool. JCC swim camps are great–you learn a lot and it’s a really good way to spend a part of your summer!” Sasha is planning to come back for the F.L.O.A.T. (For Leadership of Aquatics Training) program this summer. Justin Burnette, is another swim team participant who has also completed the Guard Start program. He has great friends on the team and is glad that JCC staff encouraged him to join. Justin sums it up well when he says “I enjoy bettering my times at every meet and getting faster each time. JCC swim programs are a lot of fun but hard work too!” He is revved up for summer Swim Team this year and for his first year at Milldale in the Aquatics Adventure Camp.

A New Beginning By now all the snow has melted, the trees are budding, and finally we can venture outside without a jacket. Everyone knows that the winter is behind us and spring is here. The feeling of renewal is tangible in the air. Despite conventional wisdom, the true beginning of the Jewish year is not Rosh Hashana in the fall. The month of Rosh Hashana, called Tishrei, is referred to as the seventh month of the Jewish year. The first month of the Jewish year is the month we are in now – the month of Nissan. If you think about it a little more, it makes a world of sense for this month to be considered the beginning of Jewish time. The springtime is when the world comes back to life and begins a new cycle. Now is the time that our agricultural ancestors stretched and yawned and began a new year of crops and farming. The beginning of Nissan was when Moses erected the Tabernacle in the desert of Sinai, and most importantly, the springtime was when the ancient Hebrew slaves were freed by God and led from the land of Egypt. Amidst our joy and excitement for the good weather and the immanent approach of summer, now is a time to rededicate ourselves to our personal goals. The springtime is a natural reminder that although we have yet another shot, the cycle of the year revolves faster and faster. So said the ancient rabbis, “If not now, then when?” Now is the time to rededicate ourselves to our goals whether they be focused on spirituality, health, our social life, or artistic skills. Our Jewish Community Center is a tremendous tool to achieve these goals. Let’s take advantage of the exceptional resources the JCC has to offer. See you there! Baltimore Jewish Hall of Fame

Meet the 2011 Honorees The JCC’s Baltimore Jewish Hall of Fame was created to honor exceptional Baltimoreans who have made an impact on the community at large through their life’s work. We are proud to present this year’s eight Jewish Hall of Fame Honorees and highlight each of their achievements. Rosalie Silber Abrams 1916 – 2009
Born in Baltimore, the third of eight children, Rosalie Silber Abrams worked in her family business, Silbers Bakery for many years. She graduated from Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, and Johns Hopkins University. She worked as a registered nurse including two years as an ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps, and a public health nurse in Baltimore City Schools. She later took with her the valuable insight and knowledge she gained working in the health care profession into the political arena. Rosalie started her political career in 1966, when she was elected to the House of Delegates, during a time when politics were strictly a good-old-boy operation. She was then elected to the Maryland State Senate, where she served for 14 years. While there, she became the first Jewish woman and in Maryland to hold the position of Senate majority leader, the first woman in Maryland to hold the position of Maryland Senate Finance Committee chair, and the first woman chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. She was responsible for the legislation creating Maryland’s Health Services Cost Review Commission, which set in motion a national model for health care reform and cost containment. This commission’s accomplishments resulted in the all payer system for hospitals, which ensures that no citizen of or visitor to Maryland can be refused hospital treatment. Rosalie’s contributions to women are numerous. In 1980, she pushed through legislation providing for payment of doctor and hospital charges for rape and sexual offense victims. She served as a member of the Commission to study the Equal Rights Amendment, a member of the Maryland Commission for Women, and as a Chairperson for the Human Practices Commission, as well as the first Chairperson of the Article 59 Committee, which oversaw mental health laws in Maryland. In 1983, Mrs. Abrams served as the Director for the Maryland Office on Aging until her retirement in 1996. Family members credit her with teaching the first sex education class in a city – at Patterson High in the 1940’s.

Harry Greenstein was born at West Lombard Street in Baltimore. A product of the Baltimore City and County School systems, he graduated from the University of Maryland with an LLB in 1918. In 1928 a delegation of Jewish leaders in Baltimore persuaded him to give up his flourishing law practice to become the Executive Director of the Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore, the parent organization of 22 Jewish social agencies. He served in this position for 28 years until his retirement in 1965. In 1933 Mr. Greenstein was appointed by Governor Ritchie as the First State Relief Administrator of Maryland and Director of the Maryland Board of State Aid and Charities. He became the Director of Federal Emergency Relief under President Franklin Roosevelt, and was the founder and first Director of the Baltimore Council of Social Agencies. In 1937, Harry became the National President of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service and in 1939, the National President of the American Association of Social Workers. He chaired a special committee which developed the present University of Maryland Graduate School of Social Work. 2011 Honorees continues on page 9

In 1941, he was appointed the Regional Evacuation Officer for MD, PA, VA and D.C. and prepared plans for the mass evacuation of civilians, if needed. In 1943, Mr. Greenstein was called to Palestine by Chief Rabbi Herzog to carry out a special mission in Rome for Pope Pius XII. In 1944, while in London, he met with Dr. Chaim Weizmann, who gave to him a secret formula to bring back to the U.S. This formula for the manufacture of synthetic rubber as a substitute for natural rubber, was one of the important factors in winning World War II. Mr. Greenstein was appointed by the U.S. government as Advisor of Jewish Affairs to the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany and Austria with the rank of Major General. He helped to liquidate the displaced persons camps and secured approval of the General Claims Law in the U.S. Zone of Germany. In 1957, Harry led the capital campaign fund for new buildings in Northwest Baltimore for the Baltimore Hebrew College, the Jewish Community Center and the Social Service Building. His other honors included: Honorary Doctor of Social Science by the University of Maryland; Honorary Doctor of Hebrew Letters by the Baltimore Hebrew College; the Medal of Honor from Jewish War Veterans; a citation from the National Conference of Christians and Jews; the Stephen S. Wise award from the American Jewish Congress; the Antique Lamp of Freedom from Land of the Bible for distinguished humanitarian service to victims of Nazi tyranny. Harry Greenstein dedicated his entire life to the welfare of his fellow man.
1913 – 2009
Bernard Manekin was born one of five children in a row house near Easterwood Park in West Baltimore. After graduating from the University of Maryland in 1937 and working briefly in the legal profession, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private, and served throughout World War II, leaving military service as a captain in the adjutant general corps. His assignments in the military led to his ability in managing people and building relationships. With his brother, Harold, he founded Manekin & Co. in 1946. Berney’s legacy is etched across Baltimore’s skyline in buildings like One Charles Center, 36 South Charles, and 120 East Baltimore in the downtown, and the Rotunda, Baltimore’s first adaptive reuse in Hampden, as well as in his vision of what Greater Baltimore could become. With the development of Parkway Industrial Center in Anne Arundel County and subsequent projects in the new town of Columbia, Maryland, he was also the first developer to realize the potential of the BaltimoreWashington corridor as a hub for business and a vital connection between two cities. No matter how successful he was in business, he always gave back to the community. He was the first Chairman of the Maryland Economic Development Commission, Chairman of the Greater Baltimore Committee, Chairman of the Walters Art Museum, Chairman of the Governor’s Commission on Sports and the Economy, and a co-founder of the Institute for Christian & Jewish Studies.

And irrespective of his considerable achievements in the community, he never forgot his Jewish roots. He served as President of the Jewish Community Center, Chairman of The Associated Campaign, Chairman of the Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Fund, and Chairman of the Board of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. Brenda Brown Rever has dedicated herself to transforming the way women are viewed and view themselves in both the Jewish community and non-Jewish communities in Baltimore and beyond. Her leadership in Jewish communal institutions has helped to elevate the status of women throughout the organized Jewish world as she actively is a voice for domestic abuse, education and politics. A graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, Brenda served as Vice Chair of the school’s capital campaign and chaired the first Women’s Studies Weekend at College Park. She served as a Trustee of the Board of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, and on the Board of Directors of the University System of Maryland Foundation. 2011 Honorees continues on page 14

Aquatics NEW! Barracudas Swimming Camp

This summer swimming camp is aimed at the year-round Swim Team participant who is looking to increase their swimming endurance, strength and swimming efficiency. The American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructor Course provides instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses in the ARC Swimming and Water Safety Program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Prerequisites: you must be 16 years of age by the last day of the class, must either hold a current ARC Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate, or hold a current authorization as a ARC Health and Safety Instructor, and successfully complete a test of swimming skills prior to beginning the class. $350/JCC Member $400/NM

In 1994, Ms. Rever founded and was first chair of CHANA, a domestic violence program for women in the Baltimore Jewish Community. At a time when no one acknowledged that domestic abuse existed, this program provided the emotional and legal support that Jewish women who were the victims of domestic violence needed. Brenda was a founding board member of the National Jewish Women’s Archives in Boston and Harriet’s list in Baltimore. She was Chair of the Baltimore Weaving Women’s Words Board, a project providing oral histories of accomplished Jewish women. In 2008, Ms. Rever founded The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, an all-girls public charter school in Baltimore City. She is currently Chair of their Board. The goal of the school is to send 100% of its graduates to college thereby enabling these students to break the cycle of poverty and to become the next women leaders in Baltimore. Brenda has served on the Board of Directors for House of Ruth of Maryland, has filled many volunteer roles with The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, and has served on the Boards of The Kennedy Krieger Institute, Park School, and the American Visionary Art Museum, where she received their Visionary Goddess Award. Ms. Rever has received the Hannah G. Solomon Award by the National Council of Jewish Women, the Golda Meir Award and Maryland’s Top 100 Women Award, to name a few. Brenda is married to Dr. Philip Rever, is the proud mother of three children, two step-children and the loving grandmother of eight. She is also the proud sister of Howard S. Brown.
