Pool Hours Shapiro Recreation Park at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC May 23-September 7, 2015
GET COOL IN OUR POOLS Safety First at the Shapiro Rec Park
Summertime at the JCC means lazy, sun-drenched days shared with friends and family at the Shapiro Rec Park. But pool fun goes hand-in-hand with pool safety.
As JCC aquatics director, Bill Kirkner, begins his tenth summer at the park, he takes members behind the scenes of the JCC lifeguard program, where the staff strives to exceed all safety standards. At the JCC, safety starts with having lifeguards who are welltrained, well-known to Bill and who are extremely familiar with the Shapiro Rec Park and the JCC. “Most of our guards have been swimming at the JCC since they were youngsters and half of them come from our swim team!” says Bill. Lifeguards who apply to work at the JCC must pass a skills test which includes an evaluation of water rescue and CPR skills, a 500 yard timed swim, and an interview with Rec Park Head Lifeguard, Travis Robert. Travis assesses their customer service skills and their abilities to respond appropriately to difficult situations. After being hired, new lifeguards (who wear distinctive green shirts) must go through training during the summer where they mentor with a more experienced member of the lifeguarding staff. “From there we evaluate the rookies to see which ones should be invited back for leadership positions,” says Bill. Because JCC lifeguards are so well-trained, they take their jobs seriously. It is important for parents to reinforce the lifeguard’s authority when enforcing rules. Travis and Bill would prefer that questions or concerns be brought to a supervisor, rather than disagreeing with a lifeguard during their shift on deck. From their position up on the deck, lifeguards may be seeing something that folks in the water would not recognize. Bill wants everyone who uses the Rec Park to understand why these rules exist. Many of them are legislated by the state health code while others are meant to prevent injuries. Before you enter our pools please take a moment to review our signage regarding our rules. They exist to protect the safety and health of JCC members and guests. If you have any questions, Bill would love to hear from you. Bill Kirkner: 410.559.3533; bkirkner@jcc.org

J CAMPERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE At Camp Milldale, unless we’re in the Visual Arts program or it’s raining, we’re outside much of the day! Campers can do archery, ropes challenge courses, our climbing wall, nature, lake activities, athletics, or take a ride on our Big Breezy Zip Line. And of course, we’re in the pool for both instructional and recreational swim.
Here at the J we think it’s important for children to have plenty of time outside with open spaces for jumping and playing in the fields, courts, pools and playgrounds. We are very fortunate to have three beautiful campuses with plenty of outdoor amenities for kids to enjoy, including lots of shaded places to keep our campers out of the sun. In our Maccabi Sports Camps, we’re all about having fun on the fields – playing baseball, lacrosse, flag football, ultimate frisbee and more. We’ll take a dip in the pool and get cool in the afternoon, and we’re always outside making new friends, doing drills, building up our skills, and getting in shape. This year we are excited to spend quality time under the roof of our new 800 square foot pavilion, which was donated in memory John Bearman by the Herbert Bearman Foundation. In Tennis Camp, we love to hit the outdoor courts with Coach Adam. We play fun crazy games that teach us how to serve and how to hit an overhead smash. And even though we’re at tennis camp, we also take a break and play games indoors too, like Capture the Flag and Scooter Basketball. Campers also have an opportunity to get cool in the pool.
At Aquatics Adventure Camp, you’d imagine we’re in the pool quite a bit, for instructional swim and for fun water games, and truth be told, we are! But sometimes, it’s great to just sit indoors or in the shade and do fun nautical arts and crafts. The J has camps that are based indoors too. There’s Habimah, our performing arts camp, and CSA Karate Camp, in which we learn Martial Arts. Yet, even though we’re indoors, singing our hearts out or learning Kung Fu, here at the J we are always making time for nature walks, recreational swim, camp-on-camp games, and a world of other great outdoor activities.

MICHELE MANNES MANDEL
at the Park Heights J
When personal trainer, Michele Mannes Mandel advises her clients at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC, she speaks from experience. “After giving birth to three kids in two years, I gained 80 pounds! I was in so much pain from being so heavy. My feet and ankles were swollen, my hips were sore …everything hurt,” Michele recalls. Once her children were old enough for her to have some time for herself, the exhausted mom began working out, trying desperately to lose all that excess weight. As she slowly returned to her former size, Michele realized that being thin without living a healthy lifestyle was not enough. She became interested in maintaining a more holistic attitude toward health and fitness and decided to become a personal trainer. Michele developed her skills, at several local fitness clubs. For many years, Michele even ran her own personal training business, Body 4 You, before deciding to return to the gym setting. In the summer of 2014, Michele became a trainer at the J. In addition to the four to six clients she sees at any given time, Michele also teaches TRX suspension training. “It’s a work-out with straps, developed by a Navy Seal,” she explains. Michele likes the J's family-like environment. “At those ‘warehouse’ gyms – the bigger ones, people are doing their own thing and don’t really want advice. The people in Park Heights are very open to education and feedback,” she says. “Training is my passion. I like working with people who want to be healthier,” she says. “I’m honest and straight forward, and I love advising and motivating people to reach their fitness and health goals, and giving them a sense of well-being.”
(Price is per person per session for all personal training)

Adults_________________________________________________ jcc.org/fitnessclasses
When he became a certified personal trainer in 2006, Harold Harris’s goals were clear. “I wanted to help clients get healthy and fit, bigger, faster, and stronger, and to encourage them to maintain healthy lifestyles,” says Harris. Those goals haven’t changed and neither has Harold’s passion for his work. “Having the opportunity to work with each client gives me great satisfaction. I feel good when I sense that my clients are accomplishing their personal goals whether inside or outside of our workouts,” he says. While Harris admits that it is challenging to keep clients motivated at times, and to encourage JCC members with busy schedules to prioritize their fitness regimens, he is not deterred.
Harris sees benefits to both indoor and outdoor training, so, weather permitting, and if group members are up for it, he typically splits up class time between indoor and outdoor fitness activities. “Outdoor boot camps are great. Usually, we'll do a mix of exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and short runs for cardio,” he says. “Clients are challenged to give their best effort during an exercise session when its cold, hot, or humid. However, it can be tough to give them a complete workout outdoors. So we just finish the workouts inside,” says Harris.

Harris stresses that exercise provides both physical and psychological benefits, so he encourages his clients to do exercises that help them stay fit and live healthy.

In addition to the thirty and sixty minute one-on-one and small group training sessions he offers, Harris’ super-challenging indoor/outdoor boot camp classes are known among JCC members 18 and up, as “the work-outs of a lifetime.” “Harold’s Boot camps are classes for three to six participants, and are fun and challenging for beginners and advanced athletes,” says Harris. The hour-long, twice a week workouts are geared to increase strength, endurance, agility, flexibility and range of motion. Participating members routinely lose inches and weight, increase self-confidence, and strengthen their cores through workouts that include circuit training, BOSU training, TRX training, short-distance running, rope jumping, boxing drills, sport drills, obstacle course, relay racing, medicine ball drills, plyometrics and interval training.

DENARD SMITH Adult Athletic League Coordinator Denard Smith can’t remember a time when he wasn’t involved with sports. What’s more, he has always been a leader among fellow athletes and teammates – qualities that serve him well in his job as Assistant Sports Director, Fitness Advisor and Adult Athletic League Coordinator at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC. Denard began his career at the JCC seven years ago, first working as a member of the fitness center floor staff at the Weinberg Park Heights location. During this time he became a certified personal trainer and soon after took on responsibility for developing and instructing several youth fitness classes including Junior Weight Training and a sports performance class for teens. Over the past year Denard has taught sports clinics in soccer and basketball, supervised and managed a youth basketball league, and assisted the Park Heights JCC’s after school Kid Space program with sports-themed activities for kids. “My favorite part of the job is meeting members and making sure that they are happy. There are people of all ages and backgrounds here and I really enjoy getting to know them.” Where does Denard find the inspiration to inspire others to get their games on? “It would have to be Bruce Lee,” he says. “I think he was taken away from us way too early. His ideas and philosophies were ahead of his time – [Lee believed in] trying to be as balanced as you can, especially in physical activities. He understood the correlation between different forms of fitness training and athletics; he knew how they were beneficial to each other and the body as a whole.” Denard hopes members will consider joining one of the many adult leagues he coordinates. While he admits that game skills are helpful, his main concern is that people enjoy themselves. “In all sports, I want people to have a good time. First and foremost, I want them to leave feeling fulfilled and having had fun with friends new and old.”

Helping others feel safe in the water is her calling. Sue Szembroth has always been a swimming enthusiast. As Aquatics Coordinator at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC, since 2006, she has had the responsibility and the joy of teaching young children how to swim. “Water aerobics is my first love,” says Sue. “I took it as part of my gym credits in college and now I am a certified Master Instructor with the United States Water Fitness Association and the Aquatics Exercise Association. And Sue is pleased to be using her passion to help JCC members and the Jewish community.
Sue enjoys sharing her love of water and her commitment to safety with seniors as well as children. “Because I am an aquatics instructor for seniors, and because the JCC offers the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics exercise classes, I feel I am also abiding by the Jewish value of honoring and caring for the older generation.”

Swimming Lesson Policy Sometimes the pool becomes unavailable for swimming lessons due to circumstances beyond our control. If the pool is unavailable for swimming lessons due to inclement weather or health & safety related issues, our instructors will conduct a land-based session including either water safety and/or land-based stroke drills at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up lessons will not be scheduled if a water session needs to be missed for one of these reasons. The JCC does not provide refunds for missed water sessions. Cinema Judaica also looks at post-World War II film; in particular, how movies addressed the plight of European war refugees, anti-Semitism in the United States and its role in public perception toward the establishment of the State of Israel.
The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore Summer means swimming, travel, barbecues and rejuvenating your mind and spirit. It also means learning more about topics interesting to you in a leisurely and fun manner. This summer, explore Jewish values and heritage through festivals, exhibits, even camp. Start with the Community Block Party at the JCC, then check out these special programs from The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and its agencies.
ShmitaFest Kick off this summer with a festival that comes once every seven years. On Sunday, June 14, the Pearlstone Center will celebrate the Shmita year with a community-wide ShmitaFest featuring an eco-spa, wild edible walks and music, as well as artisans selling wares. Festival-goers also should come ready to barter – ShmitaFest will include a bartering fair, where visitors can barter goods and up to one hour’s worth of professional services. For those not familiar, Shmita occurs every seven years. According to the Torah, during this seventh year, the land should rest, similar to the way individuals are commanded to rest on the seventh day of the week. The Shmita year began last Rosh Hashanah, 2014 and will conclude with Rosh Hashanah in 2015. In keeping with Shmita tradition, the Pearlstone Center took much of its farmland out of production, nourishing it through cover crops to restore the soil’s health. ShmitaFest will feature educational programs that explore this sabbatical year, from both a biblical perspective and through a contemporary lens.
The JMM will enhance the core exhibit with a Maryland narrative, including artifacts, articles and personal recollections that explore Maryland Jewish involvement in and reaction to these movies. Additional programming, including movie screenings and lectures, will supplement the exhibit. For information go to jewishmuseummd.org.
End of Summer It’s one last hurrah before the hectic pace of school kicks in – when family outings become a thing of the past and life becomes an endless carpool. This is the time for families to unplug together at the end of the summer at Pearlstone Family Camp, enjoying traditional camp activities, including swimming, sports and arts, combined with environmentallyfriendly activities. Pearlstone Family Camp, August 19-23, is a chance for adults and children to return to camp and make new family friends. With an emphasis on sustainability and green living, families enjoy workshops such as soap making and pickling or tackle farm-to-table projects that net flavorful, fresh meals. In the past, multi-generations were seen pressing grapes for Shabbat grape juice or harvesting wheat and baking homemade challah. One of the program’s highlights is a Farm to Table Extravaganza in which teams of families harvest crops, then prepare a dish for a community dinner. “Last year, we had teams making quiche – collecting the eggs and harvesting the tomatoes, spinach and basil – while others made baba ganoush from fresh eggplants and goat’s milk caramel sauce,” says Neely Snyder, program director, Pearlstone Center. The weekend culminates with Shabbat and families can enjoy a Pre-Havdalah twilight walk or Kabbalat Shabbat in the fields. “It’s a beautiful opportunity for all denominations to celebrate Shabbat together,” says Snyder. “Families can connect spirituality to the land and each other.”
Jewish Movie History Movies have often reflected the underlying culture and history of a period, while shaping public discourse. This summer, The Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM) will explore how the movies informed public perception of Jews and contributed to the national dialogue of key Jewish historical events in the mid-20th century. On July 1, JMM will open Cinema Judaica, created by Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. Featuring more than 100 original motion picture posters, movie stills and trade announcements from 1939- 1971, Cinema Judaica initially chronicles the war years and explores the role of the first anti-Nazi films and the creation of patriotic movies following Pearl Harbor.
