Welcome to the J In the month of January alone, you will see many physical changes to the J’s facilities that are the result of new collaborations and partnerships. At the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC we are transforming our former fitness center office space into the new home of LifeBridge Health Physical Therapy, powered by Physiotherapy Associates. Their comprehensive physical therapy services will be open to members and the community starting in March. The other half of this partnership is the addition of a new Wellness Coordinator to our JCC team who will bring LifeBridge Health professionals to both JCC campuses for lectures, screenings, and more. This exciting collaboration with one of Baltimore’s premier healthcare providers will enable us to add top quality health-related programming and services to our already strong focus on fitness and wellness. At the Weinberg Park Heights JCC, we have partnered with the Macks Center for Jewish Education to transform our former art gallery into an innovative and hands-on play and programming space. The newly opened J Town & Home of PJ Library has been carefully designed to inspire imagination and endless discovery. For more details see page 20. Collaborations are taking place in the form of new winter and spring arts & culture classes with the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art. Our recent partnership with Towson University Community Dance is also enabling us to enhance the quality of the classes we offer our young dancers. Similarly, we are working with arts professionals from other community organizations to work with children in our after school Culture Club and Habimah Performing Arts summer camp. In the realm of Jewish engagement we have formed many new alliances including one with the Etz Chaim Center for Jewish Living and Learning with whom we recently co-hosted the amazingly successful Great Challah Bake. We are also working closely with The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore to coordinate several interactive programs with their two Shinshinim (teen ambassadors) from Ashkelon Israel. Of course, we love to partner with the Baltimore Israel Coalition on events such as our annual Israeli artist performance at the Gordon. Don’t miss renowned pop artist Rami Kleinstein on March 19.

Featured Trainer | Harrison Lessans “A lot of kids have self-confidence and body image issues leading into high school. When I was in school, fitness brought a sense of competence and self-regulation that improved my spirits and gave me the discipline to succeed.” This experience and revelation feeds Harrison’s drive as a trainer. “Making an impact on somebody else is the greatest gift of this profession. I love to see my clients commit to their goals because the payoff is always worth it.” In his free time Harrison competes in obstacle course racing including: Tough Mudders, Spartan Races, Civilian Military combines and the like. Harrison lives by his training philosophy: “Meet resistance with persistence.”

Adam Stein
Local Tennis and Fitness Coaching Pro
When you’ve been teaching tennis 20 years, running the J’s tennis programs 13 years, and personal training for 18, that’s when fans and followers start to call you “a pro”. “Coach Adam”, as he is affectionately referred to, didn’t always have his current level of energy and vigor. “I suffered many breaks and sprains due to my lack of athleticism. Middle school through freshman year of college, I had many visits to the Physical Therapist, and that's where I discovered the wonders of training. I began reading everything that I could get my hands on about exercise and injury prevention. I even switched majors to Physical Education.”
With a lot of determination he turned himself into an athlete and he instills his can-do spirit into his work with class participants, campers, and clients. “I want to bring that possibility to anyone who has the same motivation and drive. It's that moment when a student succeeds at what is being taught, the joy and pride that they have accomplished something makes every moment of struggle worth it.” Private and Small Group Lessons (Lessons are one hour sessions) Private $60 Semi-Private $70 (2-3 people) Small Group $20 per person Stringing $30 Specialized Lessons (Lessons are one hour sessions) 6-8 weeks $20-$30 Note: Every tennis student must bring a racquet to class. You may purchase a racquet directly from Adam.

Jen Lake
Bringing a lifetime of experience through Martial Arts.
With a Third Degree Black Belt in Karate and Bando, and a Purple Sash in Kung Fu, coupled with 25 years of teaching experience, Jen Lake brings a wealth of skill and knowledge to her role as the Director of CSA Martial Arts and Wellness School. Like her Dad, Douglas Lake, who founded the CSA Martial Arts and Wellness School at the JCC, Jen and her team incorporate many styles into one system. “This helps to make the most well rounded students!" She explains. "We learn everything from the soft styles like T’ai Chi to the harder styles like Karate and everything in between.” Jen has grown up at the JCC loving the sense of community and family and the Jewish traditions and values. Her teaching philosophy fits in beautifully with the values of the JCC. Jen loves helping people of all ages become more self-assured and fit. “There is no better feeling than watching a student that struggles with confidence get up in front of a group to show off their moves with pride, or to see a student that has been using a walker be able to improve their balance with T’ai Chi, transition to a cane, then eventually walk on their own.” No matter the class, Jen’s goal for every student is to have them leave with new knowledge, a good workout, and feeling happy.
CSA is the recipient of Maryland Family Magazine's Reader's Choice Award for BEST Martial Arts School in Baltimore.
For someone who spends most of her day teaching you might wonder what kind of workout Jen does for herself. “There are so many great drills and forms and early on my favorites were the difficult, jumping, flying-kick forms. Now, I really enjoy the more meditative styles like T’ai Chi and Moving Meditation; I also practice Pilates and Nia, but I still love teaching those hard fancy forms!” 13

Swimming Lesson Policy Sometimes the pool becomes unavailable for swimming lessons due to circumstances beyond our control. If the pool is unavailable for swimming lessons due to inclement weather or health & safety related issues, our instructors will conduct a land-based session including either water safety and/or land-based stroke drills at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up lessons will not be scheduled if a water session needs to be missed for one of these reasons. The JCC does not provide refunds for missed water sessions. J TOWN & HOME OF PJ LIBRARY Read, Play, and Grow on our Little Main StreetTM "At the JCC we are always looking at how to make our services and facilities more relevant for our community," says JCC President, Barak Hermann. "With this mission in mind our Park Heights Task Force encouraged us to make many exciting changes to the Weinberg JCC over the past year and the creation of J Town is a realization of one of their visions." This group of JCC leaders (and users), felt that creating an innovative and interactive educational play space for families with young children would be much more meaningful to our members and guests than an art gallery. Sharon Seigel, Director of Parenting Outreach & Engagement explains that "by moving adult and administrative offices to other locations in the building, the J has been able to design a first floor that truly showcases the dynamic, innovative children’s programs that take place here." Jen Byrne, the designer of J Town and founder of Little Main Street Playhouses, says that the playhouses she and her team create are vehicles to help facilitate story creation and imagination for personal growth and self-discovery. The town includes a home, bagel place, grocer, parking garage, doctor/vet’s office, “baby garden” a safe space for infants, and a combination synagogue/theater area complete with costumes, miniature Torahs, and even two teddy bear rabbis! All of these structures are built around one of J Town’s most important community attractions – the PJ Library. A program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) and sponsored in Partnership with The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and the Macks Center for Jewish (CJE) Education, PJ Library engages Jewish families with children between the ages of six months and six-and-a-half years by sending a free Jewish-themed book or CD to their homes every month. Like so many of the best ideas, the concept for creating an actual home for Baltimore’s PJ Library came from the mouths of babes! As CJE Chief Operating Officer, Amian Frost Kelemer recalls, “At Mitzvah Day last year, we set up a little nook with all the PJ Library books. A little boy went inside to look and said, ‘Wow, it’s the real PJ Library!’” The boy’s interpretation got staff members thinking: Why not have a PJ library on site where children and their families can meet up, play, listen to stories, and even check out books? A few months later the JCC came knocking – looking for a partner that could add an educational component to J Town. "They invited us into conversations,” says Kelemer. Before long, all agreed that J Town should be built around a public library – PJ Library! “With collaborating partners, like CJE, J Town will play an important role in strengthening parenting and family life in the Baltimore Jewish community,” says Hermann.
20
“The plan is for the JCC to have programs in J Town during morning hours, while CJE will have use of the space in the afternoons," Seigel says. J Town is enhanced by its proximity to a former board room that will now serve as an additional space that can be used for J Town related craft activities. "We expect J Town to make the JCC an extremely popular destination for Baltimore families with young children,” says Seigel. “We are so grateful to our donors whose generous support enabled us to turn our vision into a reality.” Donors include: the Eddie Dopkin Family, Poppy Schapiro Philanthropic Fund, Buffy and Will Minkin, and the Annette and Michael Saxon fund. Hours Monday-Thursday: 9:30am-4:30pm Friday: 9:30am-1:00pm Sunday: 9:30am-3:30pm Pricing Free to members, guests pay $5 per child from 9:30am-1:00pm; Free after 1:00pm

JCC EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTERS Nurturing, Confidence Building, and Educational Preparedness Now accepting applications for the 2015/2016 school year. Call to stop by for a tour. When you register your child for our Early Childhood Education Programs, your family becomes a part of the entire community and culture of the J. Your child’s journey begins in one of our warm and inviting classrooms. Along with our expert teaching staff, your child experiences all that the JCC has to offer including a full-sized gymnasium, teaching kitchen, outdoor play areas, and indoor pools, where each child (ages 3+) receives American Red Cross Certified instructional swim lessons. Your child will be exposed to group activities and one-on-one interactions while also having multiple opportunities for exploratory, child directed play. Each week we will celebrate Shabbat and learn about Jewish culture and values. We will also introduce your child to science, math, and literature in our classrooms and libraries. Each child learns through play, participating in music, art, nature, cooking, and dance. Fresh fruit and vegetables are served at snack time as part of our award-winning Healthy Choices curriculum. We consider ourselves to be partners with our parents, and enhancing your child’s confidence and curiosity through creative engagement is what we do – everyday! Healthy Choices The Healthy Choices curriculum teaches children ages 2 to 5 about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins - tasting new foods like kale, quinoa, and kiwi. Daily physical activity also serves as a critical component of this program. Our Healthy Choices curriculum has been recognized by Michelle Obama’s Let's Move! Child Care Initiative for Exceptional Work in the Prevention of Childhood Obesity.

TEEN LEADERSHIP TRAINING Opportunities Expand for Summer 2015 This summer, Top Notch Teens, better known as the TNT program, turns 20. One of the most successful preteen programs in the JCC’s history, in recent summers, the program has grown by leaps and bounds. "In fact," says Paul Lurie, Vice President for Fitness, Recreation and Aquatics, "over the past three seasons, the program for rising sixth to eighth graders has grown from 80 to 130 participants." While they were thrilled by how much the youngsters benefitted from TNT, Paul and Brad Kerxton, the Middle School Program Director, were faced with a dilemma.
Machon for Rising 9th and 10th Graders “Once they aged out of TNT, we needed to find a way to keep these teens engaged with the JCC,” explains Paul. "Although some TNT graduates went on to become LITs (Leaders in Training) at Camp Milldale, that program wasn’t the right fit for all of them,” he says. So Paul and Brad came up with a solution. They decided to create a new program called Machon, which means “institute” in Hebrew. “It’s a summer program for rising ninth and tenth graders that is an expansion of TNT, but unlike TNT, it is not limited to volunteering with the JCC’s camps,” Paul says. In addition to a volunteer component, Brad notes Machon will also include community service responsibilities, leadership training and program planning workshops, and opportunities for trips and socializing. “For example, we hope to bring in a local Jewish business leader, or someone from a Jewish organization like CHANA or CHAI to educate the students about what they do, and how nonprofits work,” he says. “We’re expecting a lot of interest and we’re excited for teens to experience the new program.” Unlike TNT, says Paul, program admission won’t depend upon a lottery or formal interview. It is open to both members and guests, and participants will receive community service credits.
LIT for Rising 10th and 11th Graders Amy Bram is looking forward to her second summer as director of Camp Milldale, where she will offer a range of opportunities for tenth and eleventh graders [and ninth graders being grandfathered in] looking to hone their leadership skills during the camp season. Some camps refer to their young teenage volunteers as CITs, or counselors in training. But Amy prefers to call them LITs (leaders in training). “Not every good leader at camp has to be a counselor,” she says. “For example, the person who manages Milldale’s operation and grounds is not a counselor, yet he is one of my most valuable staff members.” Although working at Milldale necessitates relating well to children, the LIT program provides opportunities for teens to try on different roles and discover where their true talents lie. “It’s a two year program,” Amy explains. “In the first year, they rotate through age groups and learn what it’s like to work with kids. There are also some limited opportunities to help in our specialty programs such as sports or cooking,” says Amy. “In the second year, if they’ve found that their passion is working with kids of a certain age, then they’ll be placed with that age group. Or if they love teaching athletics or science or Israeli culture or crafts, they can pop around, maybe spending two weeks in one place and two weeks in another.” As Camp Milldale grows Amy says she expects opportunities for teens will grow too. For more information on TNT, Machon, and LIT at Milldale visit jcc.org/camps or call 410.559.3513.

BLOSSOMING THIS SPRING New Arts Programming
This year, your family will be able to access Baltimore’s best arts and culture right in your own back yard. Managing Director for Arts and Culture, Randi Benesch and Assistant Director of Arts and Culture, Melissa Berman predict that soon, the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC will be one of the area’s top arts destinations. “Just as the JCC is known for its camps and early childhood programs, soon we will also be known for our creative arts,” says Berman. Some JCC members got a taste of what’s to come last fall, when the arts and culture department presented six dance classes for children 3 to 8, taught by staff of Towson University’s Community Dance Department who used their own curricula. By next fall the JCC will expand this partnership adding two additional classes for students 9–11. “We didn’t want to reinvent the wheel,” Berman continues. “Arts organizations all over Baltimore are doing programming and doing it well. So we decided to bring in the experts. We had lots of conversations with these organizations, and discovered that they had problems finding good work spaces and wanted to grow their audiences. We have great space and lots of members. These matches were made in heaven!”
MICA Classes Starting Soon Benesch and Berman have also initiated a partnership with Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), which will bring quality painting, and drawing to the J. David Gracyalny, Dean of MICA’s School for Professional and Continuing studies, calls the partnership between MICA and the JCC a win/win. “This is an opportunity to engage people [who might otherwise not access MICA] in enterprises embedded in MICA’s tradition,” says Gracyalny. “Drawing, painting, and art-making enrich our lives and allow us to see the world in different ways. This [partnership] is also a way for MICA to show we care about the greater Baltimore community.” For a schedule of classes see page 32.
Culture Club The J has also launched the Culture Club for children in grades one to five. “Every Thursday afternoon for four weeks a different artist comes in to teach the kids,” explains Berman. Participating organizations include Center Stage, Abrakadoodle, Classic Catering, Baltimore Improv, and Beatwell Drumming. For a schedule of classes see page 26.
Children’s Theatre Coming Soon "JCC Arts and Culture programming doesn’t end there," Benesch explains. "Come Feb. 2015, the JCC and the Gordon Center will be home to a new children’s theater program." Benesch is thrilled that director, choreographer and educator, CJay Philip will direct the new program. Philip, whose professional credits include being dance captain for the Broadway production of Hairspray and serving in a variety of capacities at local venues like Center Stage and the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, as well as in theaters across New York City and beyond, also directed the drama sessions of the JCC’s super-popular Habimah Performing Arts Camp last summer. Participants in the children’s theatre company will receive training in acting, dancing, and singing, as well as building skills such as costume, set, and lighting design. The semester-long program will culminate in a full-scale musical production of the Wizard of Oz. “This is the first time we [the JCC] have produced a musical at the Gordon Center in a long time. We’re excited to use it this way,” says Benesch. Audition dates are set for February 8. The Children’s Theater will welcome volunteer assistance from parents and teens interested in all aspects of theater production. “We hope to build a micro theater community at the JCC,” says Berman. For additional information about the JCC's new arts and culture programming, visit jcc.org, or contact Melissa Berman at 410.559.3593 or mberman@jcc.org.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO THINK ABOUT SUMMER The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore Following a whirlwind year filled with school, sports, arts activities, children of all ages often want to just unwind when summer comes around. But, as any parent knows, too much unstructured time can quickly lead to boredom. Finding the right programming that combines fun with friendship can take some investigation. But now is the time to make those summer plans.
Jewish Camp According to every study, Jewish camp, along with a trip to Israel and a day school education, strengthens Jewish identity. Last year, The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore created The Center for Jewish Camping to provide families with information about the many Jewish day and overnight camp options. Today’s day and overnight camps range from traditional four and eight-week programs complete with timeless favorites such as color war, arts and crafts, and sports, to specialty options for children of Russian and Israeli families. A number of camps now offer shorter sessions. Many of The Associated’s local day and overnight “partner” camps have special inclusion programs that allow campers to participate fully in the camp experience. Money should not be a reason for Jewish youngsters to forgo this unforgettable experience to strengthen their identity and bond with other Jewish friends. There are a number of programs that help make Jewish overnight camp more affordable. The Foundation for Jewish Camp launched a new pilot program called BunkConnect – a user-friendly Online referral platform designed to help moderate- and lower-income families access to Jewish camp at special introductory rates between 40 to 60 percent off. One Happy Camper Incentive grant, as well as individual camp scholarships, can help defray costs. With so many options to choose from, the process can be overwhelming. The Center’s Program Manager, Janna Zuckerman, provides free consultations to families. She can review needs and offer suggestions on what programs might work best for a family. To learn more about how The Center for Jewish Camping can help you, go to livecamp.org.
Israel for the College Student Finding that ideal summer internship is on many a college student’s mind, but before committing to eight weeks in an office, students should think about spending some or all of their summer in Israel. An Israel experience has been shown to be one of the most powerful ways to connect to one’s Jewish identity. And whether it’s through a 10-day free trip to Israel through Taglit-Birthright, or a summer internship in Tel-Aviv through Onward Israel or Masa, students gain a greater understanding of their Jewish roots and connection to the start-up nation. Onward Israel participants gain invaluable work experience through this summer internship program, working in companies like Headline Media or Hitech Strategies, a strategic consulting firm. Living in a Tel Aviv neighborhood, they experience the vibrancy of modern Israeli city life with its internationallyrenowned nightlife, beaches, and culture. This program, subsidized by The Associated, is open to adults ages 19-27 who have had previous short-term Israel experience, including a Birthright trip. For those interested in Birthright Israel, summer registration will begin this winter. For information about Birthright Israel, Onward Israel or Masa, visit associated.org/experienceisrael.
