Wisdom for Today Blessings for Beauty and Reckless Abandon By Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg A few months ago, I was jogging around the Reservoir in Druid Hill Park near my home. It was a picture-perfect morning, and I was admiring the rising sun as it reflected off the glassy surface of the water. The view from the jogging path, where the park slopes away to the East, is really quite remarkable, and in the growing light, from my vantage point near the historic Moorish Tower, I could see the expanse of the city stretching from the Hopkins campus down toward the Inner Harbor. Each time I jog in the park I am struck by how friendly my fellow walkers, joggers and bikers are – more often than not people make a point of saying “hello” as I pass or smiling and saying “good morning.” This particular morning toward the end of summer as I was running counter-clockwise around the lake, I passed a women going clockwise. She was wearing headphones and powerwalking. I gave a nod and said “good morning.” “Thank you,” was what said in return. The next time around, she seemed to ignore me all together. The third and final time we crossed paths she seemed to be gazing off into the distance. Then, just as she was passing by, she blurted out: “Thank you Jesus!” I smiled realizing that, listening to her mp3 player through her headphones and looking around on this glorious morning, she was so engaged by her prayers that she had failed to notice me at all. I was not in any way offended by this encounter. On the contrary, the woman’s passion was a good reminder of how most of us, when experiencing moments of beauty and grandeur, often neglect to express our sense of gratitude. There is a time for quiet prayer, meditation and contemplative thought. But, sometimes we would do well to express our thanks for what Heschel calls “the inconceivable surprise of living.” What would the world be like if more people walked around professing their amazement and sincere thanks? How might our lives or the lives of others be affected if, when noticing life’s beauty, we express our feelings aloud and with reckless abandon? Our Sages teach us that the pleasures of life do not become ours to enjoy until we have first uttered a blessing. Anything less amounts, in their words, to theft. When we eat without saying a blessing, we are stealing our bread. When we study without saying a blessing, we are pilfering our education. To this end, the Rabbis encourage us to say up to 100 blessings a day! What would it be like if we walked through the world with that sense of gratitude, if we weren’t afraid of what strangers might think of us, but rather, reacting to the majesty of the world, we simply proclaim, “thank you God!” Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg is the Rabbi of Beth Am Synagogue. Paul Lurie Selected for JCC Association Teen Professional Fellows Program The JCC of Greater Baltimore’s very own Paul Lurie has been selected as one of 16 JCC professionals to participate in the acclaimed Merrin Teen Professional Fellows Program. This program will focus on developing leadership skills, learning how to serve teens more effectively, planning their career paths in the JCC Movement, and deepening their sense of Jewish identity. Paul’s responsibilities at the “J” include supervising four fulltime staff people along with overseeing all programming for teens including BBYO, middle school programs, TNT (Middle School leadership Camp), Road Trip summer camp, and all sports and recreational programs for kids, families, and young adults. Paul was the Experience Director for the first JCC Maccabi Experience combining Games and ArtsFest in Baltimore in 2010. The Fellowship has provided this exceptional experience for 81 professionals over the last ten years, and in a recent evaluation of the program, has been seen as a tremendous asset to these young professionals working in the JCC Movement.

Our Saturday Storyteller “Story time is truly an interactive experience,” says Geoff Hoffman, who runs the Toddler Story Time at the JCC. Geoff uses PJ library books and always brings a bag of tricks with him to engage and entertain the (mostly) preschoolers who attend. Geoff recently read the group a story about Matzoh balls who did not listen to their mommy. The kids made monkey sounds, counted and talked about how important it is to listen to their mothers. “No matter the age of the child- we involve them all!” he says. Geoff ’s wife, Sara, teaches a Messy and Messier class for Toddlers at the JCC. She is the one who got him involved with the JCC. The couple always practice their lesson plans at home with their children first. “The JCC is accessible to all ages and groups and they really nurture the growth of the little ones,” Says Geoff. Their children, 4 year old Hayden and 16 month old daughter Maya participate in many JCC programs as well.

The Baltimore Watercolor Society, established in 1885, is the third oldest art organization in the U.S. devoted entirely to watercolor painting. Though originally formed by a group of women artists, the group now totals over 450 women and men. Its mission is to encourage, educate, and promote professional excellence in the creation and development of original works of art, executed in aqueous media. The group’s history is intertwined with several venerable institutions of Baltimore – the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Maryland Institute, the Peabody Art Gallery and the Charcoal Club. This is a great opportunity for individuals to further develop their artistic abilities while recognizing their Jewish heritage and culture. Aquatics JCC Swims to the Championship
What does your future hold? The 2010 Greater Baltimore Jewish Community Study is a unique snapshot of Jewish Baltimore, captured at the apex of uncertain times. People across the country are surfacing from what was one of the worst economic downturns of the century. While the study shows Baltimore’s Jews to be strong and stable, it likewise captures the effects on our community of job loss, salary reduction and depleted savings. Single parents were especially adversely affected by the economy. Seniors, especially those who are isolated are most likely to have needs. Conversely, the study reveals an active and engaged community – an even mix of native Baltimoreans and newcomers. Our community’s faces include a striking balance between children and seniors, between young adults and those reaching middle life. The study is a picture of a community with both affluence and financial need. At its foundation, the Baltimore Jewish community remains firmly established, vibrant and even growing. This study, however, highlights many nuances sometimes overshadowed by our successes, revealing a multi-faceted community of significant – and sometimes contradictory – change. The surveyors and THE ASSOCIATED leadership were surprised by some of the study’s findings and their implications. For example, we knew that our Orthodox community was growing. We had not factored in that it would reach one-third of our population, with needs and opportunities quite distinct from those of other affiliations. However, we were pleasantly surprised by how many of our greater community members – 74 percent - consider their Jewish identity “very important.” We knew that many would be impacted by the global recession. We were struck by the fact that today one in three is “just getting by” while just five years ago that number was one in five. . These points are not merely intellectually noteworthy. They have significant implications for our delivery of services and future allocation of funds. This study is merely a snapshot. While the study can confirm behaviors and service trends up until now, it cannot predict the future. Its findings identify significant challenges for our community and wonderful opportunities for growth. We expect this information will shape our planning efforts for the next five to 10 years, creating a framework for our ever-growing and dynamic community. THE ASSOCIATED conducted this study through an anonymous restricted grant because it affects each and every one of us. Four Swimmers have qualified for the Maryland State Championship Meet, which will be held in March, 2011. This is the first time in the team’s history that JCC Swimming team members have qualified for the State Championships. In addition, almost one-third (23 of 75 registered) of the swimmers on the JCC Swimming team at Owings Mills have achieved National Age Group Times through November 14th, compared to a maximum of 16 for the season in 2009-10, and 10 for the season on 2008-09. In addition to the regular staff that includes Dori Zvili, Lara Wellerstein, Stacey Israel, David Mitnick and Dianne Newborn – Roman Gerstovich will be joining the team at Milldale this summer as well. During the year, Roman works at the Rosenbloom OM JCC coaching kid’s soccer leagues and running sports activities at Kids Center. We are very excited to add his sports and recreation knowledge to camp. Roman will be helping with our focus on Fitness at camp this year. The expansive Milldale grounds are perfect for our new initiative and we can’t wait for the summer to begin!
