women’s history & records

Johnson County

At Nationals ous after the first-round was complete. Both players followed their opening round win with a loss in the second round and brought their season to an end. Doubles The success story of the 1996 national tournament for JCCC was the team of Born and Rebekah Wheeler. The duo reached the quarterfinals, making them the second team in the program’s history to advance as deep in the tournament. They finished the year at 14-6, tying the school record for wins by a double team at the No. 2 position.

1997 Team Johnson County posted its second highest national finish in school history, placing 10th at the NJCAA’s Division II Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Singles Freshman Julie Bryan became the first singles player at JCCC to advance to the semifinals in a national championship tournament. Bryan, playing at the No. 6 position, won her first three matches, setting up her bid to reach the finals. Bryan finished the year with a record of 15-2 and a winning percentage of .882, both new school records. Freshman Sunshyne Bailey also provided points for JCCC, winning her first-round match. Doubles JCCC’s No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Rebekah Wheeler and Meghann Westhoff became the first team to reach the semifinals. Wheeler also became the first JCCC player to reach the quarterfinals or better in both years of competition. The pair finished the year at 17-2, shattering school records for wins and winning percentage at the No. 3 position. Their 17 wins are also the most by any doubles team in school history.

1998 Team The previous two seasons, the Johnson County women’s team had dominated the Region VI Championships, winning 15 of the 18 singles and doubles titles. While the team’s dominance slipped slightly in 1998, the Lady Cavaliers did extend their NJCAA National Tournament streak to four straight appearances. Johnson County made the most of its opportunity, placing 11th overall. Singles Sophomore Ashley Snipes and freshman Jami King each won two singles matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Sunshyne Bailey and freshman Megan Gross each were victorious in one match.

Doubles All three doubles teams won at least one match at the 1998 National Championships, with the duo of Sunshyne Bailey and Jami King winning two. They finished the season at No. 2 doubles with a 14-4 record, tying the school mark for wins in a season.

1999 Team The Lady Cavaliers peaked at the right time, narrowly losing to the Region VI title. But they saved their best effort at nationals, placing third, the highest finish ever. It also marked the program’s second top-10 finish in three years. “This is definitely the best feeling this program’s had since I’ve been here,” Moser said. “This year there were no great teams, but many good teams. In previous years, usually two teams dominated, but this year the tournament was very close, so we thought if we played to our capabilities, a top-five finish was within reach. The real key for us was the first two rounds.” Wallace State won the team title with 28 points. Chattanooga State was second with 25, followed by JCCC with 23. Central Florida and Collin County round out the top five, finishing with 22 and 21 points respectively. Singles Sophomore Jami King became the first All-American and national champion of the women’s tennis program, as she dominated the No. 2 singles bracket at the NJCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Tucson, Ariz. She later became the first two-time AllAmerican, reaching the finals with freshman teammate Julia Ball at No. 2 doubles. Their performances helped JCCC to a third-place team finish, the highest in school history. There were 23 teams in the field. After a bye in the first round, King, the seventh seed, opened the championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cara Mince of Glen Oaks. She then followed by knocking off the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds consecutively, and all in straight sets, to win a national championship. “Her foot speed and her heart got her that championship,” Moser said. “She was the talk of the tournament. She knocked off three top seeds without losing a set. She was amazing.” King finished the year with a 15-4 record, which ties the school record wins at No. 2 singles. She finishes her JCCC tennis career with a singles mark of 25-8. Her 25 wins are the fourth highest total at JCCC. In addition to King’s dominate effort, the Lady Cavaliers were solid from top to bottom, reaching the quarterfinals in all six tournament brackets. Sophomore Margaret Clark (Olathe

North) advanced to the semifinals at No. 6 singles, defeating two top seeds before falling to the eventual national champion. Freshman Sydney Moshier of Salina nearly reached the semifinals, taking top seed Ann Harple to three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7. Doubles In doubles play, King and Ball were seeded No. 2 and they lived up to their high seed, reaching the finals, only to fall in the championship, 1-6, 6-7, to the third-seeded team of Leslie Gordon and Kim McCravy of Wallace State. Both King and Ball earned second-team All-America honors. The No. 1 team of Moshier and freshman Emily Danielson of Topeka played impressively, reaching the quarterfinals.

2000 Team Johnson County qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament for a seventh straight season and finished in the top 10 for a fourth straight year. Singles Four of JCCC’s five singles participants won a match in the tournament. Emily Danielson at No.1, Sydney Moshier at No. 2, Amy de Blonk at No. 3 and Kende Rothaus at No. 6, each finished 1-1 in the tournament. Moshier and de Blonk were region champions. Doubles Both Johnson County doubles teams won two matches before falling in the quarterfinal round of the 2000 National Championships. The duo of Emily Danielson and Sydney Moshier at No. 1 finished 2-1 in the tournament, and 11-8 overall. Amy de Blonk and Krista Kuban also went 2-1 and ended the season 13-7. Their 13 wins tie the fourth best season mark in Johnson County history at No. 2 doubles.

2001 Team Johnson County qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament for an eighth straight season and finished in the top 10 for a fifth straight year. JCCC entered the national tournament on the heels of one of its most dominating performances in school history. JCCC won the Region VI title by winning eight of the nine championship brackets. That momentum carried over to nationals, as JCCC placed fourth, its second highest national finish in program history. Singles For just the second time in JCCC women’s tennis history, a Johnson County player was crowned national champion. Sophomore Krista Kuban became the program’s second national champion in singles, downed Amandin Borgazzi of Kilgore College in the

finals, 6-2, 6-4 to win the No. 5 singles bracket. Seeded No. 7, Kuban knocked off No. 1 seed Stephanie Floyd off Wallace State in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2. She followed by downing No. 3 seed Amanda Miller of Central Florida, 7-6, 6-0 to reach the finals. Borgazzi was the fifth seed. Kuban did not lose a set the entire tournament. “Krista was amazing” said head coach Glen Moser. “She was in a zone and she knocked off three top seeds without losing a set.” But she wasn’t’’t the lone JCCC AllAmerican. Sophomore Jessica deBlonk, the No. 2 seed in the No.2 singles bracket, reached the finals against No. 3 seed Maria Arcos of Collin County. deBlonk won the first set handily 6-2, however, Arcos came back to win the next two sets, 3-6, 1-6, ending deBlonk’s run for a national title. Her runner-up finish did earn her NJCAA All-American honors. Freshman Ashleigh Dexter nearly reached the finals in the No. 6 singles bracket. Dexter had the lead in her semifinal match, before falling. Sophomore Amy deBlonk also lost her semifinal match at the No. 3 singles bracket, falling short in her bid to be a two-time All-American. Doubles In doubles player, Jessica deBlonk and her sister Amy, teamed together at No. 1 doubles to earn All-American honors. The pair finished second, losing in the finals to the No. 1 team from Central Florida, 3-6, 1-6. Jessica deBlonk became just the second player to earn two All-American honors in one championship.

2002 Team Johnson County qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament for an ninth straight season and finished in the top 10 for a sixth straight year. JCCC placed fourth for a second straight year, matching its second highest national finish in program history. Overall, JCCC head coach Glen Moser was pleased with his team’s effort. “We went in ranked fifth nationally, and we improved on that finish,” Moser said. “We competed very well. Singles In singles play, four of JCCC’s six players reached the semifinals; Sarah Bowman at No. 2, freshman Lauren Oakleaf at No. 3, Julia Danielson at No. 4 and sophomore Ashleigh Dexter at No. 6. Bowman, Danielson and Dexter took their matches to the final set before falling. Doubles Leading the way was the Cavaliers No. 3 doubles team of freshman Tyler Freeman and Sarah Hill. The pair

Johnson County

At Nationals the fourth player in the program’s history to reach the quarterfinals. He opened with an upset win of Monte Calderon of San Jacinto, the tournament’s eighth-seeded player, 7-6, 6-4. He followed with a hard-fought threeset victory over Barnie Bacoum (Hinds) 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Chamberlain was eliminated from the tournament by the fourth-seed Herve Rousseau of Midland, 6-1, 6-2. Acosta opened with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Keith Serwatka of Mitchell, however, Don Van Ramshorst of McLennan, the third-seeded player, returned the favor 6-2, 6-0. The remaining JCCC participants each suffered early exits.

1989

1991

Team Johnson County jumped to the Division II national tournament and it proved beneficial, as the Cavaliers finished as the country’s third best team.

Team The Johnson County team matched its best national tournament finish, placing third behind national champion Collin County and Vincennes. JCCC also produced five NJCAA Division II AllAmericans at the championship. “That’s a hard feat to accomplish at the national tournament,” Moser said. “The team kept working harder as the year went and they peaked at the right time.”

Doubles For only the second time in the program’s history, two JCCC doubles teams posted a win in a national tournament. Todd Perkins and Doug Owen opened with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Cantonville in the No. 2 bracket. Chamberlain and Grant Allen easily disposed of Brainard’s duo, 6-1, 6-0 before falling by the same score in the second round. Chamberlain became just the second Cavalier to win at least one match in both singles and doubles in the same national tournament.

Doubles Rick Allen pulled double duty as he and his partner Scott Jurgensmeier flew through the No. 3 doubles bracket to give JCCC its first doubles national championship. Allen is the only player in the program’s history to own both a singles and doubles national championship.

1988 Team Johnson County qualified for its sixth consecutive appearance at the NJCAA, but it would be the team’s last at the Division I level. JCCC switched to Division II in 1989. In a final D-I appearance, the Cavaliers posted their second highest finish, placing 15th thanks to a strong performance in the singles championship. Singles Four players posted wins in the respective tournament brackets, the most in the program’s history. Willie Alumbaugh, JCCC’s No. 1 player, led the way by reaching the quarterfinals before losing to the tournament’s eighth-seeded player. After receiving a bye, Alumbaugh defeated Juan Marvelandra of Dean, 6-4, 6-3, which advanced him to the quarterfinals. He lost that match 6-1, 6-0 to Aldo Burga of Indian Rivers. Chris McAbee, O.J. Allen and Rick Allen each won their first-round matches before exiting the tournament in the second round. Doubles For just the second time, all three JCCC doubles teams were ousted in the first round of play.

Singles Three Cavaliers reached the finals in singles: Alex Diaz (No. 4), Rick Allen (No. 5) and Ben Bergsten (No. 6). Allen and Bergsten became the first Cavaliers to win an NJCAA title, as each swept through the tournament. All three were honored as NJCAA AllAmericans.

1990 Team The Cavaliers notched a top-five spot for the second time in as many years, placing fifth at the Division II national tournament in Tyler, Texas. Singles Ben Bergsten became the program’s first two-time singles all-American, reaching the semifinals at the No. 2 position. He was the national champion at No. 6 a year earlier. Doubles The Cavaliers No. 2 team of Chris McAbee and Chris Tucker garnered AllAmerica honors, reaching the semifinals in their respective tournament bracket.

1991 Team The Cavaliers extended its string of consecutive national tournament appearances to nine years by finishing runner-up at the Region VI championship. At the national tournament in Tyler, Texas, the Cavaliers posted a third straight top-10 national finish, placing seventh. Doubles For the third straight year a JCCC doubles team reached the semifinals, however, this would be the first No. 1 duo to accomplish that feat. Dan Heck and Steve Nash were honored as AllAmericans with their strong national showing.

Singles Steve Nash and Dustin Nelson earned All-America status by reaching the finals in their respective tournament brackets. All-American honors were also awarded to Didier Combe and Kevin Kowalik, as each reached the semifinals in their brackets. Doubles Steve Nash and Trini Ooi became just the second Cavalier duo to reach the NJCAA finals under Moser. The pair were honored as second-team AllAmericans. Nash closed the book on an outstanding career at JCCC. He became the program’s first three-time All-American, first two-time doubles all-American and the second player to garner all-American status in both singles and doubles within the same tournament. Also earning All-American status was the No. 3 team of Didier Combe and Kevin Kowalik. The pair earned honorable mention honors by reaching the semifinals. Coupled with singles All-America honors, Combe and Kowalik became the third and fourth Cavaliers to earn elite status in both singles and doubles.

1992 Team Although Johnson County could not duplicate the success of the 1992 team, the 1993 squad proved it was one of the better teams in JCCC’s tennis history. Paced by Didier Combe in singles and the duo of Vidrine and Cezus in doubles play, the Cavaliers finished as the sixth-best team in NJCAA Division II. Singles Didier Combe became only the third Cavalier to earn All-American status at two different national tournaments. Combe matched his 1992 performance, reaching the semifinals, but this year he did it at the No. 3 position. He also closed out his tennis career as only the second player at JCCC to garner AllAmerica honors three times.

2012 johnson county community college tennis guide

Doubles The Cavaliers No. 3 duo of Steve Cezus and Drake Vidrine earned honorable mention All-America honors by reaching the semifinal round at the national tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1993 Team The Johnson County men’s team was on a roll the first day of the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, winning first round matches in all nine brackets. That left the Cavaliers alone in first place. However, the team stumbled a little on the final day, finished sixth for the second consecutive year. Singles Five of Johnson County six competitors reached the quarterfinals. Sophomore Khaled Elsawi, Moser’s No. 1 player from Cairo, Egypt, was the Cavaliers’ top performer, making it to the semifinals before getting ousted. By reaching the semifinals, Elsawi became the eighth singles player in the program’s history to earn All-America status. He also set an all-time record at JCCC for wins at his position with a 21-2 record. Reaching the quarterfinals were Andy Urias at No. 2, Steve Williams at No. 3, Eric Kwait at No. 4 and Drake Vidrine at No. 5. Doubles All three doubles team posted first round victories but only the No. 3 doubles team of Matt Anderson and Eric Kwait reached the quarterfinals.

1995 Team Many questions faced the 1995 Cavaliers as they began the season. Most notably: would they be able to extend the streak of consecutive NJCAA tournament appearances to 13 straight? The Cavaliers not only met that challenge, but also finished among the county’s top 15 programs. At the NJCAAs, Johnson County gave a valiant effort but finished 13th overall, marking the first time in seven years of competing at the Division II championship they had not finished among the top 10 teams. Singles Four Johnson County singles players opened the 1995 national tournament with a victory. Mike Murphy at No. 1, Jarrod Eyler at No. 2, Choo Lee at No. 4 and Marc Hedstrom at No. 5 were the Cavaliers first-round winners. Murphy upset the tournament ninth seed for his
