2008-09 JCCC All-Conference Picks
√ THE GAME: The Johnson County Community College Cavaliers (21-9) look to advance to the District B Championship tonight against the Brown Mackie College Lions (17-14). These two teams have met to decide the NJCAA Region VI Champion in eight of the last 10 championship games. √ THE COACHES: Mike Jeffers, the all-time winningest coach in Johnson County’s basketball history, is in his 18th season at the helm of the Cavaliers basketball program. The head coach has recorded a stellar career record of 299-250 (.545). A victory tonight over Brown Mackie for the Region VI D-II title would give Jeffers his 300th career win at JCCC. Jeffers overall mark as a collegiate head coach is 383300 (.561). Jeffers also ranks as one of the top community college coaches in Region and the Jayhawk Conference. Jeffers currently ranks fourth all-time in Kansas Jayhawk Conference history in career wins behind Jim Carey (602), Randy Smithson (404) and Jay Herkelman (371). He ranks sixth all-time in career wins among Region VI coaches; Jim Carey (602), Dennie Erkenbrack (502), Francis Flax (496), Randy Smithson (404) and Jay Herkelman (371). Jeffers was named the program’s fifth coach in June, 1991. In his 18 seasons at JCCC, Jeffers has led the Cavaliers to seven 20 win seasons, including a school record 30 wins during JCCC’s national championship season in 2000-01. He has also guided the program to five region titles. Jeffers has earned Region VI Coach of the Year five times, and in 2000-01 was selected the Coach of the Year by both the NJCAA and KBCA. Francis Flax, head coach of the Brown Mackie program, is in his 17th season with the Lions, and his 26th overall. Flax, who served as head coach at Highland Community College prior to his arrival at Brown Mackie, has a career record of 496-386. His 496 wins rank third in Region VI basketball history. Flax has amassed a career record of 330-222 in 17 years at Brown Mackie. An NJCAA Hall of Fame selection two years ago, Flax has led his program to four NJCAA D-II Tournament appearances, and came away as the national champion in 1999 and 2005. √ THE SERIES: Tonight will be the 34th meeting between these two programs, and marks the eighth time in 10 years they have met to decide the Region VI Division II champion. The two years they did not meet in the title game were 2007 and 2008. JCCC won the title over Brown Mackie in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2006. JCCC defeated Hesston for the championship in 2007 and 2008. Brown Mackie was crowed the champion after defeating JCCC in 2002, 2003 and 2005. JCCC went on to win the NJCAA Championship in 2001, and Brown Mackie won the national title in 2005. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series against the Lions, 19-to-14. The two teams split this season, both teams winning on their home floor. The first game this year, hosted by JCCC, was a high scoring affair, with the Cavaliers prevailing 100-88. Freshman Kenny Moore led all scorers with a career high 35 points. Sophomore David Yadrich poured in 21 points. Shortly after, Yadrich would be lost for the season with an injury. Sophomore Rory Spencer had 18 points and blocked six shots. Spencer had a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards, and All-American Nafis Ricks had 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to register a victory.
