BROWN & GOLD CLUB The

President Speaks . . . The grandkids were coming, so what better plan than to take them to the country and introduce them to the woods. We rented a cabin with running water but no TV. After determining who was sleeping where, we doused ourselves with bug repellent and headed for the woods. Our little girls are 3 and 5. Our first decision was what path do we follow. Having a map in hand, I thought we had it made, only to find that the map didn’t correspond with the names of the trails. A decision was reached and off we forged. We soon discovered the path was rather treacherous as it had rained the night before and the rocks on the path were slippery. Our 5-year-old was mentally curious and physically close to the ground. She discovered things an adult wouldn’t see or hear. How fun to be in the presence of youth! Finally, after crossing the hanging bridge and several small creeks, the cabin was in view. We were in need of sustenance after this much longer hike than intended, as well as a little first aid. That evening after the sun went down behind the treecovered hills, we headed to the fire pit. What a peaceful site with the fire blazing away, lighting up our little camp surrounded by family. Hopefully our little girls will remember our outing in the woods, when the fireflies and the fire lit up the dark night and the only sounds were from the creatures of the night. I hope that your summer was a special one too, and that good memories survived. Now we’re headed into fall, with lots of exciting events and trips planned just for you. Please read and take advantage of them. Sheri

Brown & Gold Trip in Review Article submitted by Suzee Oberg

After checking in with our hosts at JCCC, we are settled in our luxurious Arrow bus (and yes, there is a restroom on board). Our competent and jolly driver takes us to our first stop, where we see a special display and learn about a historic church. Next we travel to another historic site in Kansas City, where we stand in a place where streetcars once ran beneath the street and where a lovely shady park and fountain now quietly exist, surrounded by luxury lofts in the splendid old buildings that once held businesses. Here we learn about the garment district that formerly existed here from Harvey Fried, who knows all about it since he was once a garment manufacturer himself. He is also a long-time Brown & Gold member. Inside the Historic Garment District Museum, directors Harvey and Ann Brownfield (herself a former clothing designer in the district) answer questions and show us around. They then treat us to a guided bus tour of the area. Next, we make a quick visit to Case Park, only a few blocks away, to see the fabulous bronze statues commemorating the journey and visit of Lewis and Clark, York, Sacagawea, Jean Baptiste and Seaman, 4

the dog. This spot overlooks the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers and in the distance we can see Kaw Point, another locality associated with the epic Lewis and Clark journey. A fun lunch in the Power & Light district is followed by a visit to the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Gardens, and then to our final destination of the Miniature and Toy Museum of Kansas City, where we are escorted by tour guides and shown the highlights of this most fabulous of places with its worldrenowned collections. If you haven’t been on one of our trips, you are missing out on a day filled with adventure and some of the most friendly people in Johnson County.

Come join us next time!

Kansas: Ethnic Groups in the 20th Century CRN 91370 – Tuesday, November 10, 2009 – 6:30-9:00 p.m. Fee: B&G $9

Join Dr. Allison Smith, Associate Professor of Art History, in an engaging discussion of art-making in Kansas. Well-known artists such as Aaron Douglas and John Steuart Curry will be addressed, as well as lesserknown Kansas folk artists including M.T. Liggett and S.P. Dinsmoor (creator of the “Garden of Eden”). From 19th century European immigrants (Birgir Sandzen) to contemporary trail- blazers (the internationally recognized Roger Shimomura), Smith offers an informative introduction to Kansas art.

Geared toward those interested in ethnic studies and Kansas history, this course will explore the strengths and struggles of various ethnic groups occupying the state of Kansas up to and including the 20th century. What role did these groups play in the development of Kansas communities, and what can this history teach us about the myths and realities of immigration, both past and present?

Kansas: The Dust Bowl in Literature and Video CRN 91374 – Thursday, October 22, 2009 6:30-9:00 p.m. Fee: B&G $9 Gain a better understanding of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s through books, diaries, songs, photographs, oral histories and video. In this two-and-a-half- hour session, we’ll move like the wind to read a bit, listen a bit, and discuss how the yellow-brown haze and walls of black clouds made life difficult for our Kansas ancestors, who struggled to stop the dirt and watched their crops blow away.

Kansas: Its History and Image CRN 91373 – Monday, November 23, 2009 – 3:00-5:00 p.m. Fee: B&G $9 Whether free-staters or exodusters, reformers or hayseeds, Auntie Em or Bob Dole, the histories of Kansans have not always matched their images, but the two have definitely evolved together. This course explores key moments in Kansas history – the “bleeding” territory period, early 20th century progressivism and the Dust Bowl – and shows how early depictions of Kansas in the national media have changed as a consequence.
