The Sturm Family Foundation is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the
23rd annual Denver Jewish Film Festival
Welcome to the 23rd
Denver Jewish Film Festival
prESEnTED BY THE STurM FAMILY FOunDATIOn We are so appreciative of your support, now more than ever. In our current climate – an era of handheld personal screens, of mindless bingestreaming on the couch (guilty!), where differing political ideology or affiliations or social media fluency can make community feel more like a collection of likes than the people who keep us strong and grounded and present – it means so much that you’ll be joining us (in the real world!) to enjoy cinematic content the way it’s intended – on a big screen.
This year’s festival is bigger than ever, and truly a global effort. The 43 documentaries and narratives in our 2019 festival (in a world of formats: features, shorts, television episodes, even a web series!), come to us from 32 distributors and filmmakers, representing 18 countries’ takes on Jewish culture, history, and contemporary life. While we always pride ourselves on bringing you the best of the best of international cinema, this year we are proud to be screening four different countries’ submissions for Best Foreign Language Oscar 2019. From social activists on YouTube to feminist Orthodox female EMTs; stories of intergenerational family relationships and powerful Holocaust resistance; tender LGBT dramas and existential Israeli narratives with a magical realism twist; this year’s films are heartwarming, gorgeously shot, and a glimpse into the human experience – through a Jewish lens. DJFF begins and ends this year with special screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Sloan’s Lake. We are thrilled to bring DJFF back to the Sie FilmCenter in partnership with the Denver Film Society, with three encore screenings of our most unique films. We’ll be expanding to a handful of theaters down South later this year. But between February 6 – 18, join us in our beautiful Elaine Wolf Theatre for the one time we completely transform into our very own cinema. With talkbacks, filmmaker Q&As, and premieres of our favorite films of the year, you won’t want to miss out. We can’t wait to see you at this year’s Denver Jewish Film Festival…and throughout metro Denver all year long! Amy Weiner Weiss Director of Festivals

to dust Dark Comedy/Science/Death/ Grief/Orthodox/Friendship Director: Shawn Snyder 2018/uSA/92 minutes rating: r | English Shmuel (Gèza röhrig), a Hasidic cantor in upstate new York, is distraught by the untimely death of his wife, rivkah. As he struggles to find solace in his religion, whose grief rituals are sacrosanct, Shmuel grows increasingly haunted by visions of rivkah’s decomposing corpse. Convinced that her soul will suffer until her body returns to dust, Shmuel decides that to stop his feverish spiral, he must seek an understanding of the physical processes of her decay – despite the blasphemy inherent in any scientific inquiry. risking discovery and expulsion, Shmuel tiptoes outside his enclave, where his search leads to Albert (Matthew Broderick), a bumbling biology professor at the local
community college. Soon, Albert is unwittingly seduced into an odd world of homespun forensic research and begins to guide Shmuel through outrageous experiments that aim to approximate a timeline for rivkah’s dissolution – starting with the theft, suffocation, and burial of a pig. As amateur scientists practicing imperfect science (and incompetent criminals on progressively absurd outings), the two find themselves neck-deep in genres in which neither of them belongs. With their macabre moonlit misadventures growing ever more perilous, the odd couple will stop at nothing to satiate their curiosity and ultimately find Shmuel the comfort he desperately seeks. the last suit Drama-Comedy/Post-Holocaust Director: pablo Solarz 2017/Spain, Argentina/92 minutes Spanish, Yiddish, German, and polish with English subtitles OPENING NIGHT SPONSOR: JOANNE SINGER
At 88, Abraham Bursztein is seeing his place in the world rapidly disappear. His kids have sold his Buenos Aires residence, set him up to move to a retirement home, and disagree on how to handle his fading health. But Abraham survived the Holocaust, made a successful life in a foreign land, and isn’t about to quietly fade away. Instead, he plots a secret one-way trip to poland, where he plans to find the Christian friend who saved him from certain death at the end of World War II, and to keep his promise to return one day.
Comedic and poignant in equal measure, journeying from Argentina to Spain, across Germany and finally to poland, Abraham is on his own but also accompanied by the characters he meets along the way, who both help him and need his help. A standout among these is the iconic Spanish actress, Ángela Molina, as the proprietor of the Madrid hotel where Abraham stays. With its klezmer-driven score, evocative cinematography and fast pace, The Last Suit approaches its weighty themes with a light touch that illuminates a serious story. And in its mix of Spanish, Yiddish, German, and polish, it is a globe-trotting surprise, a late-in-life road movie with planes, trains, and a big heart. Denver Premiere. ENCORE SCREENING:

Budapest, 1936. The Hungarian prime minister returns from Germany in a coffin, his dream of making Hungary into a fascist state snuffed out – for now. Crime reporter Zsigmond Gordon, a cynic who thinks he has seen it all, has other things on his mind. A tip leads him to an unusual crime scene in a seedy part of the city – a beautiful, well-dressed young woman is dead, with only a Jewish prayer book in her purse. Investigating the mystery girl's murder, Gordon enters a world of pornographers, brothels, and Communist cells leading to the highest echelons of power. The more people try to scare him away, the deeper he digs in, not knowing who to trust, or what ulterior motives are working against him and the truth.
Sobibor is based on the history of the Sobibór extermination camp uprising during WWII. When Soviet officer Alexander pechersky was a pOW in Sobibor, he managed to do the impossible - to organize a revolt and mass escape of the prisoners. On October 15, 1943, rebellion burst out in the camp: after killing 12 SS-officers, 300 prisoners managed to break the fences and hide in the forest. Many of the escapees were later caught and died - the rest, led by pechersky, managed to join the partisans. While the heroic actions of the Sobibor prisoners have received little recognition, a posthumous awarding of the Order of Bravery to Alexander pechersky in 2016 has given rise to an international campaign of memorialization of the rebellion leader and his comrades. Russia’s submission for Best Foreign Language Oscar 2019.

This is the extraordinary life story of the German Jewish immigrant who helped to invent the modern motion picture business. The man whose motto was “it can be done” fought and ultimately conquered Thomas Edison's attempts to monopolize the film industry. Creating universal pictures in 1912, Laemmle would go on to give many Hollywood legends their starts, including Walt Disney, John Ford, William Wyler, Irving Thalberg, and others. He also hired many female directors and made Lois Weber the highest paid director on his lot. under Laemmle’s leadership, universal would become known for its classic monster movies (The Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.). When he sold universal in 1936, Carl would go on to do something far more important than any movie or studio he had created. Battling Adolph Hitler’s government and a notoriously anti-Semitic u.S. State Department, Laemmle ultimately rescued over 300 Jewish refugee families from nazi Germany. Colorado Premiere.

The Denver Jewish Film Festival presents the pilot double-episode of one of Israel’s newest thriller television shows, When Heroes Fly, inspired by a bestselling novel.
The Twinning Reaction is a feature-length documentary film about a tragically failed human research experiment from the 1960s, a case involving identical twins who were separated in infancy and secretly studied by psychologists for many years. The primary focus of the film is a pair of reunited twins, Doug and Howard, in their quest for answers about the twin study and its findings.
When four friends, war veterans of a Special Forces unit, receive news that Yaeli, a former lover of one of the friends and sister of another – long believed to be dead – may still be alive, the four friends reunite and embark on one final and deeply personal mission to find her. Can they triumph over their past demons and find the strength required to lay them to rest? Featuring breathtaking action sequences, When Heroes Fly is a fast-paced thriller centering on strong characters who have seen the dark side of life, and must walk through fire and brimstone once again in order to find peace. It’s about healing, second chances, and loss, but, most of all, it’s about the power of life and the human strength to fight for it. Colorado Premiere.

the accountant of auschwitz Documentary/Post-Holocaust/Justice Director: matthew Shoychet 2018/Canada/74 minutes English and German with English subtitles Oskar Gröning, known as the "Accountant of Auschwitz," was charged with the murder of 300,000 Jews. When he took the stand in 2015 at the age of 94, his trial made headlines worldwide. The debate around his prosecution is at the center of this historic, yet contemporary, look at justice. As survivors travel to Germany to testify, the heinous acts of the Holocaust remain vivid and traumatic. For some, there is no grey area: Gröning was witness and therefore complicit, regardless of his duty to follow orders. Others look at a frail man in the last years of his life and see no reason to pursue charges. Bringing war criminals to justice, with no statute of limitations, asks fundamental moral questions with few simple answers. From nuremberg to the new alt-right, The Accountant of Auschwitz constructs a stark reminder that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. – HOT DOCS Colorado Premiere

What happens when Ariel, a well-off, childless man of 55, gets a phone call from his college girlfriend and learns that, when they broke up 20 years ago, she was pregnant? And that, two weeks ago, their son drove her car through the railings of a bridge and died? She is truly sorry she never told him, but she always knew he didn't want children. What can he do now but keep on going, despite a certain sadness? What drives him to visit Acre (where his son lived and died) to discover who this boy was? As he meets with his son's friends, teachers, and lover, he gradually finds himself identifying with his boy and, for the first time in his life, experiencing fatherhood. Colorado Premiere.
Above the Drowning Sea recounts the dramatic escape of Jews from nazi Europe to China. When no country would take them, a door opened in far-away Shanghai, an “open city" in chaos from foreign invasion and civil war. Ho Feng Shan, the Chinese Consul in Vienna, defied his own government and the Gestapo to do the right thing. Jewish refugees and the Chinese who helped them recount their terrors and the remarkable friendships forged across cultures. Shot in six countries over four continents, this award-winning film takes you on an inspiring and emotional journey across time and across the world. Truly a story that could have been ripped from today’s headlines, the film vividly celebrates the every-day heroism and humanity of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. A legal misdemeanor has mandated that David, 30, an upper-class charmer, attend Connections, a social center for adults with autism. David is soon paired with Sarah, 24, the group’s most enthusiastic member, and while he is less than enthused, he doesn’t yet realize that this quirky bundle of energy just might hold the key to his happiness. This endearing narrative film is unique in its non-professional cast of actors with autism, all of whom are members of the Adaptations Group at the JCC Manhattan, cast alongside seasoned and recognizable actors such as Jessica Walter (Arrested Development, Archer). Director rachel Israel notes, “Our ambition is to tell a love story that transcends the subject of disability and speaks to the universal need for human connection, and in the process to show how actors with autism can deliver compelling performances that are relatable to a wide audience.” Denver Premiere.

etgar keret: based on a true story Documentary/biography/animation Director: Stephane Kaas 2017/France, Israel, Netherlands, uSA/67 minutes English people from all over the world have come to love Israeli writer Etgar Keret for his surreal short stories and his hilarious live performances. As The Guardian wrote: “Spending time with him is like entering the world of his stories: suddenly, everything seems slightly off-kilter, full of comic potential.” When two young Dutch filmmakers set out to make a film about Etgar Keret’s stories, they knew they had to make use of many different techniques to truly show how his mind works. Through animations of his stories, re-enactments of his anecdotes, peeks behind the scenes, and interviews with family and friends (Jonathan Safran Foer and Ira Glass among them) in Tel Aviv and new York, they try to find out why Keret’s constant storytelling has kept him alive. dear fredy Documentary/History/biography/resistance Director: rubi Gat 2017/Israel/74 minutes Hebrew, English, and Czech with English subtitles Fredy Hirsch was born in Germany, a proud Jew and openly gay man. At 19 years old, when the nuremberg Laws were published, he fled from Germany to the Czech republic, which was then conquered by the nazis. He began activities in the Czech republic as a sports teacher in Jewish youth club, and soon became his students’ object of admiration. With the deportation of the Jews to the Terezin Ghetto, Fredy was appointed head of the youth department and managed over 4,000 youth. When he arrived in Auschwitz, Fredy continued his advocacy on behalf of the youngest and most vulnerable amongst inmates. He persuaded Mengele to set up a daycare center for children and youth, granting some 600 children their final moments of happiness. In Auschwitz, Fredy Hirsch had a lover, he was out, and people loved him for all the good he did. He died on the eve of the revolt he helped to plan, but which unfortunately never came to pass. The story of Fredy Hirsch is another link in the history of the gay community, and this film combines interviews, archival materials, and animation to reveal Fredy’s inspiring story and the details of his death, which remain a mystery to this day. His encounter with Théodore, an endearing and cantankerous teen raised by his single mom and studying for his bar mitzvah, will seriously upend his...uncertainties. During a single night, while Simon's wife (the local rabbi) and Théodore's mother form a common front, the two rebels set out on a crazy quest: toward accepting themselves. Colorado Premiere.
Director: ruth Beckermann 2018/Austria/93 minutes German, English, and French with English subtitles “Waldheim no, Waldheim no” shouts a crowd in the center of Vienna in 1986. ruth Beckermann was one of the activists trying to prevent the election of Kurt Waldheim and documented the political events with her camera. More than 30 years later, she goes back into her own archive and, aided by international TV-material, analyzes this turning point in Austrian political culture. The film shows the tangled web that former un Secretary General Kurt Waldheim became ensnared in by concealing two years of his wartime biography. It shows the swift succession of new allegations by the World Jewish Congress against him, the denial of wrongdoing by the Austrian political class, and the outbreak of anti-Semitism and patriotism, which finally led to his election. narrated by ruth Beckermann, The Waldheim Waltz sets the Waldheim affair in a bigger international political context, yet 30 years on, it is dauntingly timely. 80-year-old interpreter Ali ungár travels to Vienna in search of the former nazi officer who might have executed his parents in Slovakia. He finds only the officer’s son Georg, a bon vivant retiree who has distanced himself from his father’s past. But Ali’s visit awakens his interest, and the two men take off on a journey across Slovakia in search of surviving witnesses of the wartime tragedy. Their different views and life experiences result in both tensions and comic moments. For the two men, it’s a bittersweet road trip on which they discover deep, unresolved conflicts being washed ashore in new forms.
Apartheid is rampant in South Africa, 1963. When black and white men are arrested on a farm in rivonia for conspiring to commit sabotage and violent acts against the repressive South African government, tenacious lawyer Bram Fisher steps up to the challenge as lead counsel. But Bram’s involvement is complicated – he is an unaccused freedom fighter, who happened to avoid arrest, and duing the trial not only has to unravel the manipulated evidence by the prosecutor and expose bribed or tortured witnesses, but must also protect himself from detection.
Slovakia’s submission for Best Foreign Language Oscar 2019.
Bram soon finds that political leader nelson Mandela is also on trial. Mandela urges his fellow defendants to plead not guilty and shine light on the systemic corruption against the African people. seating policy & print sources: 23rd DJFF 2019 23rd Denver Jewish Film Festival Seating Policy
all seating is reserved Unlike most film events, screenings at the JCC Denver’s Elaine Wolf Theatre have a reserved seating policy which works much like any live theatre or concert event, where each patron has an individually numbered seat for each film. This means that if patrons are seeing multiple films, they may need to move seats after each showing. Patrons that purchase tickets in advance may request the same seat (if it is available), but they will need to exit the theatre and present their ticket separately for each film. Reserve a specific seat each time you purchase a ticket. Doors will open approximately 20 minutes prior to each screening. Please come early so you can locate your seat number and row. Late-comers will be seated at the discretion of the ushers. The theatre will be emptied after each screening in order to clean and conduct a sound check for the next film. Please help us keep the festival running on time by leaving the theatre promptly. Handicapped seating is available. To reserve handicapped seating please contact the box office at 303.316.6360. Free parking for the DJFF is available in all three JCC lots. Street parking on S. Dahlia St., E. Alameda Ave. and the neighborhood to the north of our location is also free.
