Throughout the years, our community has honored many leaders with the Robert E. Loup Hineni and the Gerald S. Gray Awards. We look forward to sharing some of these stories with you on Sunday, September 18.

OUR HISTORY
OUR STORY
In December 1922, the doors opened on the Center located at 13th Avenue and Decatur Street. At that time, the neighborhood of Lower West Colfax was described as the Jewish Township on the scenic Platte River. As families prospered, the Jewish community expanded and moved into new neighborhoods in East Denver. In 1932, with a gift by L.H. Guldman, the Center moved to an old mansion at 16th Avenue and Irving Street and became known as the Guldman Community Center. The new Center included workshops, clubrooms, a library, assembly room, and dining halls. It was the heart of the Jewish Community, and as such, created a sense of “instant belonging.” Over the next decade, programs and services of the Center continued to expand with the addition of a pre-school and day camp, while also serving as the meeting place for AZA and BBG youth groups. A gymnasium, donated by the Strauss Family Foundation in Chicago, was added to support athletic activities like those of the Young American League called the Hawks. In 1947, as the Jewish community continued to grow and the facility’s needs were under increasing demand, the Center filed articles of incorporation. In 1947, it became known as the Jewish Community Centers of Denver, with J. Leonard Berman serving as the first official president. In 1953, land and historic buildings were purchased in Elbert, Colorado, to build the “J—CC Ranch,” which affectionately became known as JCC Ranch Camp and created the JCC’s new overnight camp experience for Jewish youth. In 1958, the Board of Directors of the JCC decided to build a new Community Center. With the first phase of the construction completed in 1962, the JCC opened its doors. Since that time, additional wings and renovations have taken place and the JCC still resides at the same central Denver location today.

The JCC Denver has a long and valued story. There have been peaks and valleys, like many organizations, and we have faced those together. That’s what a community does and why our mission to serve, strengthen, and inspire a community guided by timeless Jewish values is as relevant today as it was in 1922. The JCC is more than a building; it is home to individuals and families. From infants, children, and teens to young adults, parents, and seniors. It’s the place where activities abound, lifelong friendships develop, and no matter how long you might have been away, the doors to the JCC are always open.
