Wolf Theatre Academy • Summer 2011 Grades PreK–12 At the Wolf Theatre Academy, we set the

THEATRICAL PROFESSIONALS

HIGHEST STANDARDS for our faculty and students. Our students work with

who are experienced in the art of theatre

EDUCATION.

At the younger ages, we

emphasize a POSITIVE, nurturing style of teaching, and our students grow through ENCOURAGEMENT in an environment that supports their development as individuals and as artists. Although our teaching focus shifts for older groups to

QUALITY PERFORMANCE, we are proud that most students complete our programs with a sense of incredible accomplishment for a job well done. AGE-APPROPRIATE programming allows younger children to focus on FUN, creation and fantasy, while older students learn the SKILLS that will enable them to approach both CLASSICAL and CONTEMPORARY material with ease. ONE

& THREE-WEEK HALF-DAY workshops include performance classes, technical apprenticeships

and audition techniques, in addition to

FULL-DAY production and dramatics performance workshops. Now sit back as we

raise the curtain on another summer of

THEATRICAL MAGIC at the Wolf Theatre Academy!

Please see the introduction to MACC and the JCC on pages 2–8 for information on registration, pricing, supervised lunch, special needs children and scholarships. The Wolf Theatre Academy also offers select Theatre classes at our new South location! Please see pages 39–42 for these listings.

The Academy Is Different Than Camp (For Grades 3 & up) The Wolf Theatre Academy’s summer experience should not be confused with a typical camp experience, which focuses on constant activity and stimulation. At the youngest ages (grades PreK–2), our classes are similar to those in camps, where programs are conducted as structured play. However, at the older ages (grades 3 and up), we are a serious training academy where the focus of our program is quality performance. While students are supervised at all times during academy hours, all students in performance or production workshops will be expected to work on their own at home and when not directly working with faculty. Also, students with leading roles will be asked to spend significant time studying at home. We encourage parents who are looking for a more recreational camp experience to take this into consideration when making their summer choices.

WOLF THEATRE ACADEMY SUMMER 2011

Mainstage Production Sessions Summer 2011 Mainstage Productions • Urinetown • The Music Man • Romeo & Juliet Patrons of our program should note that again this year our mainstage productions rehearse in one session and perform in the next session. This is to accommodate those students whose schools let out during the first few weeks in June. This year all three productions begin the third week of a session and perform in week two of the following session. This might be an issue if parents are trying to match schedules for other three week programs. Check dates carefully and please feel free to call our staff for assistance if you have any questions.

Grade Levels All grade levels refer to the grade students will be entering in the fall of 2011. Students in grades 3 and 6 generally have two options. They may participate with younger students, which gives them greater responsibility and the possibility of larger roles in Dramatics Performance Workshops, or they can choose to work with older students and face the challenge of more mature work. Students at the younger end of the grade requirements should expect smaller roles in productions and workshops (see also Day One Auditions and Casting below).

An asterisk and the note (*Day One Auditions) after the title of a workshop indicates that acting auditions and the casting of roles are part of the class. It should be noted that students do not need to audition before enrollment and all students enrolled will be guaranteed a part in the play/workshop. Auditions for individual roles will be held on the first day of class, and rehearsals begin after roles have been assigned. Barring absences or policy violations, each student will retain his or her role for the duration of the class. Although no preparation is required for auditions (see musical exception below), it is always helpful for inexperienced students to enroll in the Audition Techniques Workshop, which runs from June 6–10 (see page 20).

**Day One MUSICAL Auditions Two asterisks and the note (**Day One MUSICAL Auditions) after the title of a workshop indicates that both musical and acting auditions and the casting of roles are part of the class. This summer we are running two musical workshops in the Pluss Theatre. These are slightly different in terms of preparation then our non-musical workshop. It should be noted that no musical experience is necessary to sign up for these classes. However, all students enrolled in these musical workshops must come to the first day prepared to sing a song from a Broadway musical. Recommendations and further instructions will be provided once you sign up. It should also be noted that students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the music from the show before the first day of this workshop.

Casting While the objective of the summer performance classes at the Wolf Theatre Academy is to give all students equal opportunities, we cannot promise specific parts to any student, and no student should expect a leading role or preferential treatment in any production. We make every effort to ensure that all children are engaged by the collaborative effort needed to put on a play, and that every student finishes the session with a positive feeling. Some children, especially those who have less theatrical experience or who are moving into a new age category, may initially be disappointed with their casting. Parents should understand that even if a child is disappointed with his or her casting, tuition cannot be refunded.

Attendance at Performance Classes Students who will miss even a single performance of a production should not register for the class. Students who miss more than one day of any class for any reason, including illness, may be re-cast at the instructor’s discretion. Extensive absences may result in the reduction or even elimination of a student’s performance responsibilities. MACC will not refund tuition because of a student’s absences.

Scheduling: Weekend rehearsals, May 30 (Memorial Day), June 8 (Shavuot holiday), June 19 (Father’s Day) & July 4 (Independence Day)

Please read the class descriptions carefully, as some workshops list mandatory attendance at Sunday rehearsals and performances. There will be no Academy rehearsals or performances on Friday evenings or at any time on Saturdays. This year we begin with a two short weeks of programming beginning on Tuesday, May 31; with no classes taking place on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day) or Wednesday, June 8 (Jewish holiday of Shavuot). Please note also that some workshops have mandatory rehearsals on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 19). Families planning activities or trips on Father’s Day should not sign up for classes that conflict with their plans. Also, new this year, there will be no MACC classes on Monday, July 4.

Three-Week Workshops Session I & II • Weeks 3, 4, 5 • June 13—July 3 Mainstage Musical Production Urinetown (*Day One Audition) Grades 6—12 M—F, 9 a.m.—4 p.m. (Three weeks) Mandatory Technical Rehearsal: Sun., 6/26, noon—8 p.m. Performances: Wed. 6/29 (eve.); Thurs. 6/30 (mat. & eve.); Fri. 7/1 (mat.); Sun. 7/3 (mat & eve) Shwayder Theatre $675/JCC; $810/non-member Director: Scott Lubinski Musical Director: Stephen Nye One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter. This fully mounted musical production includes a brilliant script and rousing songs that include: “Run Freedom Run,”“I See A River,”“Urinetown,”“Follow Your Heart” and “Privilege To Pee.”

** Parents should note that Urinetown contains mature content (PG-13) and should familiarize themselves with the story before signing their children up for this production. A detailed plot synopsis can be found at wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinetown or www.mtishows.com (search for Urinetown).
