Temple Micah volunteers Nancy Litwack-Strong, Mary Ann Strassner, Peter Strong and Patti Parson take a break in front of the house that they helped Habitat Interfaith Alliance build for the family of Sadia Ereg (fourth from left).
As a staffer and member of Temple Micah,I cherish daily opportunities to deepen connections with my congregation, plus occasional interfacing with other synagogues and churches in metro Denver. Across these diverse realms I’ve noticed common threads in how congregations strive and often succeed in serving people through changing seasons and life-stages – and how congregants find satisfying activities year after year through their respective spiritual communities. Last summer, for example, Micah-ites enjoyed naturally awesome Shabbat gatherings at parks, refreshed their synagogue’s interior and lawn with a transforming“Micah Makeover”and joined compatriots in the Habitat Interfaith Alliance, a group of 12 temples and churches, to build a new house for Sadia Ereg, a Somali immigrant, and her family. In addition,Temple Micah along with other synagogues sponsored a Tu B’Av celebration of the Jewish holiday of love with a casual party welcoming single Jews ages 40+. This social event drew more than 60 participants, most in their 50s and 60s, and seemingly 100% appreciative, encouraging organizers to consider more such get-togethers.
